I am tending to only hang out here now so I don't throw shade on people who actually do like the game.
So, can anyone explain to me why Lucanis has purple wings? It has been bugging me more and more. Correct me if I am wrong but no spirit or demon in Thedas has ever been shown with wings. They are not angels and do not have the same cosmology as they do in our world. Demons are not fallen angels. In fact even in our world not all angels have wings or if they do they must be invisible because in the bible stories there are accounts of angels visiting mortals and looking like normal humans.
It seems to me that giving Lucanis occasional glowing eyes to indicate when the demon was in control was not thought sufficient. Not only do they give a visual representation of this split personality by actually showing the demon out side of Lucanis when he is ostensibly in control, or at least the control is balanced between them, but then they have this addition of wings. To make it even more absurd they actually allow him to fly in some cut scenes. Yet this is never explained in context of the lore, so it would seem like we are meant to just accept it as a normal part of the abilities he gets from the demon. When we first saw them in a trailer, I suggested that perhaps they were associated with his armour and some sort of magical effect associated with it but they definitely come from the demon.
To my mind it was more a case that the designers thought that looks cool and will attract younger players, let's put it in, and the writers agreed. I've only seen that one page of the original character concept artwork for the game that was posted here but I notice that none of the characters there are shown with wings, even Imshael, an actual demon.

I think it's just 'it looks cool'. Edgy wings on Lucanis? Who cares about demon possession rules, it looks cool. Lore be damned, we're here for the aesthetic.

I'm STILL in act 1 so I don't actually know if this gets addressed at some point but I expect that won't be the case. The cheesy AF purple wings are just one of the reasons I cannot take this character seriously. Granted, ME2 ditched the nerd tone of ME1 and went for rule of cool too and I was initially shocked at the trailer at the time and went into "they ruined Mass Effect" meltdown. But at least there was good wiring there in the end, these wings however, man... Nope. Cannot stop laughing at how ridiculous that is.

Instead of retconning the previous 3 games like Veilguard had, how about we just retcon Veilguard instead? Let's just pretend it never happened. DA4 was the friend we made all along

Pretty much this, I'd say. I'm STILL in act 1 so I don't actually know if this gets addressed at some point but I expect that won't be the case. I'm pretty sure no one even mentions them in game. Is it like the demon himself, that we as players can see it but no one else can? It seems as though they have to spell it out for the player what is going on as though they are children with no ability to work it out for themselves. Yet the game is rated 18+. I'm convinced the designer was a fan of Arch-angel from the X-men and thought it would be cool to introduce a character that looked like that in Dragon Age. The fact no one comments on it does suggest it is mostly aesthetic, except for the fact that he does seem to be able to fly short distances. However, that could be using the wings as a visual to explain why he can do this, when it shouldn't be possible from the lore. Flying is not a spell in Thedas. Either you can do it naturally or you can't. Although, I will admit that for some reason Corypheus was able to do this in DAI but I assumed that must be to do with the effects of red lyrium or the blight. (Was the Architect also able to fly short distances). Fear and despair demons are able to levitate, so perhaps it is meant to replicate their abilities. If that was the case, though, why doesn't someone comment on his ability and ask if it is due to his demon partner? Granted, ME2 ditched the nerd tone of ME1 and went for rule of cool too I wasn't quite so struck by it in ME2. I suppose I managed to suspend disbelief over the whole cloning thing so after that I just went with the flow. However, I really wasn't happy by what they did with Ashley in ME3. That look seemed totally out of character for her. Very disappointing.

Outside of DAO may be. I still think meeting Hespith and hearing her creepy rhyme about how they create brood-mothers was the most horrific episode ever. Still, I do have a vivid imagination so they only needed to give me that much information and my own mind did the rest. Actually encountering the brood-mother reduced the impact in some way because it was so grotesque for me it lessened the horror of it, like they were trying too hard. Sometimes hearing rather than seeing can be more effective. For sheer impact though, surely the Battle of Ostagar set the scene perfectly for the rest of the game. They also allowed us just enough time to wander around and get to know people before it occurred that you felt some connection with them. Even in our brief conversation with King Cailan I'd started to warm to him and then suddenly he was gone. I was ambivalent towards Duncan because I was still appalled how he murdered Jordy but nevertheless I did know him so I understood his despair when the beacon lit but no one came. It also brought home the relentless unstoppable nature of the darkspawn horde. They have never really managed to reproduce that feeling in subsequent games. In DA2 we didn't really have long enough with Hawke's family to feel a connection with their sibling before they were killed. With DAI I think the explosion at the Conclave would have had more impact if we had been allowed to spent some time wandering around among the delegates before it occurred. They could still have had us opening a door and then boom, so the amnesia would still have worked. In some ways DAV did seem to be copying the story beats from DAI to a large extent. Quick introduction to explain why we're there: check. Start journey with one companion who can explain stuff to you: check Crisis situation with demons raining from the sky: check. Make your way through the demons to find two more party members: check. Find the location of the source of the problem: check. Stop the source of the problem: check. Suffer from amnesia about an important part of the narrative: check. Deal with new problems that have arisen from stopping the original one: check. Eventually get access to a cool hub of your own as a base of operations: check. To be honest, the writers weren't even coming up with original ideas for the narrative but were rebooting the previous set with a new cast and locations. Disclaimer: I played DAO around the original release and did a second PT right after and haven't touched the game since. DA2 I replayed after DAI and is the most recent in my memory. So when I say most fucked up thing it means most fucked up thing I still remember. My memory for details is so bad in general that without lore buffs like you I would never have remembered stuff enough to make any sort of connection with the ancient elves and titans and whatnot. So thanks for at least reminding me of things I would otherwise not be able to recall! Also when it comes to psychological horror: I have aphantasia, the inability to visualize. That's why I can read about the most gruesome stuff and it won't conjure up any vivid imagery and therefore not affect me all that much unless we're talking torture because that triggers a strong emotional reaction as I "imagine" what it feels like. I've only ever read one book I had to put down for an hour because the murder method was so horrifying to think about as a woman. I literally gasped and had to take a break. I suppose that's why I'm such a visual media person and why seeing things has a much bigger shock value for me than just reading about it. Well done visuals is super important to me. I love reading but it's not the same for me as for other people. Back to Dragon Age, the broodmothers were indeed excellent psychological horror and I also liked how they looked. As for emotional impact of death, agreed on the Hawke sibling. That was so poorly done. You spend like five minutes with them before they die so absolutely zero emotional impact. What's interesting is that the death of Aveline's husband was well done and hit me emotionally even though I didn't know anything about him either. BioWare definitely has a history of poor rushed prologues, DA2 and ME3 are the worst examples, and no doubt a result of EA presssure to get the game out as fast as possible. And DAV feels super rushed too and like a copy of ME3 with the very sudden reaper invasion and just running while around you everything goes to shit. DAV so far does feel like painting by numbers, just rehashing ME3 and DAI plot points. BioWare has NEVER been good with plot imo. I remember playing Witcher 2 and thinking to myself, wow, the plot writing is so much better than anything Bioware has ever done, but Witcher 2 lacked any kind of emotional impact for me, so I missed Bioware playing that game. So excellent emotional narrative trumps great plot for me. But that's no excuse for just rehashing stuff. MEA did this too. It has the exact same narrative themes as the trilogy, except done less well. I will say that to me DAO had the most generic save the world fantasy plot ever, which is why DA2 is my fav in the series. And darkspawns were just like orcs. BUT plot and narrative are not the same thing. BioWare used to be very good at narrative, of making these super non creative basic plots work because of HOW the story was told. BioWare did emotional storytelling like no other studio for a while, and the companions and their arcs were a big part of it. So I'm mostly fine with a simplistic plot if how we get from A to B is well executed. And I need to be emotionally invested in the characters. I'm not emotionally invested in any of the DAV companions yet. They are caricatures for the most part. MEA would have been much more enjoyable with better companions too. The main story was rehashed but it wasn't really that bad. I feel like DAV might be the same. An OK main story dragged down by horrible companion writing. Too bad the companions are my favorite thing about BioWare games.

Okay, if you want my idea for a continuation of the story after DAI, this is the link to my contributions on Archive of our Own: archiveofourown.org/works/8952415/chapters/20489572I wrote it some years ago now, 2017 to be precise, so I'm not sure how well it's aged. I was careful to try and keep it within the lore though. Still I got a few kudos from readers so it can't be all bad. There is a sequel as well, which also appears on the Archive and a separate stand alone story set in Ferelden. In my stories the Crows are definitely the bad guys, apart from Zevran and those he has been able to influence.

Rook, who might as well be a golden retriever. Which is strange because I recall him telling an important npc related to the quest to "shut up". The strongest he's ever come across so far since the 'bar fight'. I'm actually pleasantly surprised about Rook not being a complete tool so far. If you choose the stoic and aggressive options a lot he's a really focused and often a little annoyed at the companions for getting too wrapped up in their own drama. My Rook wants results. Rook does have some badass Shepard-like moments that way. Of course the roleplaying in most instances is very limited to shades of agreeable but it's not a complete disaster. My Rook left somebody to die who didn't deserve to be rescued in his eyes. And you can have Rook be literally so fed up with an NPC's bullshit that you have the option to just punch them and knock them out cold to progress the mission. Half of the companions disapprove greatly and some approve greatly, that was funny. Neve approved greatly, so she really is the right woman for my Rook, lol! So far Rook is the aspect of the game I have the least issues with. My Rook is a proper rational adult who gets shit done one way or another. He also looks the part with a constant look of disapproval or grim determination on his face. My usually jolly treasure hunter is ANGRY at the gods for ruining his carefree existence and causing so much death. And he is also no friend of Solas and gives him shit constantly. There is roleplaying to be had, I'll say that much. It's not renegades Shepard. It's more a super pissed off paragon flavor. But I dig my Rook so far. The playing therapist part with companions all the time is eye rolling but how Rook navigates the main story is fine.

Fun fact: Since it was released DAV has not managed to have a higher daily player count than BG3...a 15 month old game. DAV's peak player count was 4 Nov at 89K+ vs. BG3 at 101K+ - yesterday it was 59K+ vs 96K+ so the gap has only grown. That tells me players would rather do a "10th" playthrough of BG3 than touch DAV. Great job, Bioware "Leads."

Rook talks a lot without any input from the player. Does any of that depend on what we say when we do get the choice, like in DA2?
So far I have seen no evidence of that

Just heard banter between Harding and Davrin thap perfectly illustrates the shallowness of companions writing.
After Harding quest arc, big revelations on titans, blight and where dwarfes came from. (Im paraphrasing a little) Davrin: So Blight comes from severed titals dreams, mad from imprisonment. Harding: Yep. Davrin: How do you wrap your head around it? Harding: The same way you do around elves being whispering old dragon gods worshiped in Tevinter. (Quote) Reality is crazy
It’s as if they aren’t actually speaking, but exchanging phrases. As if even companion AI is sick and tired snd want to end this conversation.

Like if you pick the purple option in initial conversation they joke more supposedly? Or if you pick the stoic option you are a bit more serious? I must admit I haven't cared enough to test this.
I noticed BW added more of that over time, though, especially playing through ME Legendary recently. By 3 Shepard was talking a lot more without player input, same deal with SWTOR once you get to the Alliance sections. I guess they want the player character to talk more but it's a hard balance because it does feel like you the player have less agency.

It’s as if they aren’t actually speaking, but exchanging phrases. Yeah they mostly just recap what is happening to one another instead of having any actually interesting conversation that goes a little deeper. The game talks at the player through them so much spelling out everything like you're five it's damn irritating. Nobody talks like that in real life. The companion dialogue is just so so bad and it does not seem to be getting any better. When they do talk with one another in a somewhat normal fashion it's the most banal fluff about food and such. Maybe letting AI write dialogue doesn't seem so bad an idea anymore, I cannot imagine it turning out more boring than anything BioWare wrote happening at the Lighthouse.

I don’t know the score but from what I gather from normies; it’s either cringe or forgettable. Yep....I figured it'd wind up being "forgettable" like Andromeda was - okay-ish, but forgotten about by mostly everyone. So forgettabble that I actually forgot about it as I went back to play actual rpgs. Sure, I didn't like the game but even with a souless piece of crap like Dragon's Dogma I could maybe pretend that there is a story I like due to the gameplay. Veilguard however is repetitive enough that I didn't find a gameplay loop for the combat that justified doing a second run, not anytime soon.
Let's see, gotta finish Morrowind again which I was playing while waiting for Veilguard and I'm still in the middle of. And on these 3 days of playing it again I've already read more text than my 6 days with Veilguard, since every codex there is pathetically small.
Then I also gotta finish a Skyrim playthrough I halted, for Veilguard. And I'd rather chat with dead eyed Skyrim npcs than to deal with the carebears of Veilguard again for a while.
So yes, Veilguard is forgettable. It can easily get out of your syste unlike the other DA games and it can rot there for all I care until I feel like romancing Davrin just to see how it is. Until then my nephew can play it, since children love bright lights and quippy dialogue.

So perhaps the game isn't entirely a lost cause. I feel like I'm playing two different games in one. The elven backstory that is well presented and then the Lighthouse Disney level fluff that is completely disconnected from everything and mostly cringe. You've hit on the nub of it. The Solas stuff for the most part is good. Everything else is just mediocre fluff with modern day issues chucked in for good measure. As I've said in my previous post, most of DAV is just a rehash of DAI general narrative without the good bits from that game which allowed you to fully role play your PC. To be honest, they would have done better to have issued the Solas part as an extended DLC to Inquisition, with the Inquisitor leading their old team to the conclusion. Add together the Solas bits throughout the game and the finale and you would pretty much have the right length for such an add-on. Then the whole narrative would have been tied off in a satisfying way that cleared the decks for their next installment. The more I reflect on the game, the more dissatisfied I become with every lire decision they took aside Solas and ancient elves. As solavellan, the amount of content with him, ancient elves lore and an option to wrap up his story on hopeful note felt really gratifying after a decade of waiting. But this is the only reason holding me back to dunk on the game for the damage it did for Thedas setting. Toothless, blank, afraid to explore darker themes, which in turn make you appreciate good parts less. Dumbed down and restrictive. I have looked at Joplin scrapped concept in artbook and we literally could have had it all. We could have had what we were promised at the end of Trespasser. Whoever made a creative desision that resulted in what we have in DAV ruined decades of work established since DAO.

OK, so I have just talked to Morrigan at the Crossroads and finished the entire Regrets Of The Dread Wolf stuff before I've even completed act 1 and it feels like this is not what I was supposed to do just yet, lol. No spoilers, just wanted to say that I actually liked everything about it. And even though Morrigan isn't as complex as before perhaps because without a world state important she can't be, I thought at least she sounded like herself and Claudia Black is a delight as usual. That was the best part of the game to me so far. Everything about Solas, how my Rook was able to be super pissed off with him and call him names and have Morrigan react to that in an interesting way. That was GOOD writing. Rook can totally call Solas all the things us Solas haters have been accusing him of, I'm almost shocked, lol. So perhaps the game isn't entirely a lost cause. I feel like I'm playing two different games in one. The elven backstory that is well presented and then the Lighthouse Disney level fluff that is completely disconnected from everything and mostly cringe. You are actually in Act 2: quest with his murals becomes available at the beginning of second part.

He does have his moments for sure. The Dr. Melfi parts are a little grating. Especially when you want to be Tony Soprano. Happy to hear that he gets to punch somebody. A lot of people need it in this game. Rook might even be better than Ryder though it's a low bar to clear. If the writers weren't so terrified of making anybody feel uncomfortable and moving away from hugs and kisses, we could've gotten our dark tone and our proper gritty protagonist. Definitely going to stick with Davrin, Neve, and possibly Lucanis for now.

You are actually in Act 2: quest with his murals becomes available at the beginning of second part. Nope. You can complete it in act 1. I did this before the final big battle of act 1. Which is odd and doesn't really feel like you should be doing this yet but it is absolutely doable. I've also upgraded the crafting table to 8 of 10 before finishing act 1, lol.

Meanwhile - this pretty savage takedown coming from a trans gamer - a little long but well worth the listen: In other news, I've uninstalled this thing and reinstalled Inquisition. I can't wait to go back to the Hinterlands!

Rook might even be better than Ryder though it's a low bar to clear. Low bar agreed. He is a much better protagonist than Ryder for me. Even inky, I'd say. Thought inky was a doormat as well. Ryder was completely spineless and had no charisma. Rook can have a real aura of getting shit done authority. While a Lord Of Fortune Rook doesn't really have any business being there, I totally buy the leader aspect more and more though as things go south in the main story. My Rook does not cry over spilled milk. It's only at the Lighthouse where you're forced to play therapist to toddlers that things get ridiculous. But even then Rook can be blunt and distrustful at times. My Rook told Harding he doesn't like what's going on with her. He told Lucanis he'll have a close eye on him and is not happy with an abomination around. The companions accept this so there isn't any drama there but at least you can play Rook somewhat how you like.

So, can anyone explain to me why Lucanis has purple wings? About this again, I guess I know now why they gave him wings for a practical plot reason: Lucanis needed to be able to fly in order to get to Ghilan'nain and try to kill her with the dagger at Weisshaupt... Make of that what you will.

Whoever made a creative desision that resulted in what we have in DAV ruined decades of work established since DAO. is there a PDF I can look at 👀 very curious. I appreciated the Veilguard story for what it was, but they should’ve continued and focused on the Titans, elves, and the ancient past as that was arguably the best part of Veilguard. Even then, there was a lot of “How” and “Why” missing from those sections of the game. My opinion on how the story should’ve have went: Keep Tevinter, The Crossroads, Arlathan Forest, Kal Sharok, and MAYBE The Anderfels. Leave Rivain and Antiva for another game (Rivain was literally reduced as a level for Taash’s sidequests. The Lords of Fortune were such a disappointment in that respect.) The gods should’ve not been as powerful as they were starting out (just like Solas), which would have then allowed our team less urgency and be faced with less devastation (at firs.) They would then use that time to investigate Solas, his past, and The Crossroads. Get really deep into the drama! I still loved the game, though, don’t get me wrong. I appreciate it for what it is.
