I decided, with trepidation....to try plant based hot dogs. I mean since my youth I have been used to good old hot dogs made of extra pig snouts and enough msg to last a month in one hot dog. Right off the bat I wrinkled my nose and narrowed my eyes at the package of plant dogs, 'They are too small' I immediately thought. And yes they were small even for small hot dogs, what kind of outrage is this? I do not expect jumbo dogs but these things are slightly bigger than breakfast sausages. I open the package and they are glomed together, and tough to separate...another minus point from me. I just know I am going to hate these things. So I stick two dogs into my new air fryer oven and prepare my hot dog buns, mayo, hot n spicy mustard and sliced cheese. As they are cooking I raise my eyebrows and am surprised that they are starting to wrinkle like a good dog should and skin bubbling a bit. Timer goes off, dogs are ready and now for the taste test. I was very surprised that the taste and consistency was good, not as good as the dogs from my childhood but still as good as current day hot dogs. So conclusion: Plant based dogs are small but a very good replication taste and consistency wise. Would buy again.

Dutch "poffertjes" require a special frying pan, but fortunately they also come ready made for the microwave. They are small balls, which taste like pancakes. They are covered with powder sugar and you dip them in real butter. They are loved by children here. And since I never grew up, I love them too.

I made a spicy Chili-Garlic Shrimp stir fry the other night. Turned out great, but I overcooked the rice a bit. The Shrimp were fresh & tasted just like mini- Lobsters Worth the extra $

Did this on a smaller scale. I didn't add any salt nor garlic powder nor tomato paste. I used the seasonings that came with the noodles and that sparingly. Cheese is minimum. Not a bad dish.

Real hot dogs should be made from blood plasma and powdered hoofs, dirty hoofs, ...and the swabbing water from the butcher's floor, ...and maybe the skin from an occasional snout. - Don't let the vegans win! More seriously, I might try veg dogs too then. My hypothesis is that it's the spice mix that makes the taste, whatever they're made of.

Question for non-Americans (and non-Canadians): Is the following video accurate?
Is there really no pumpkin pie in Europe? why was there such a strong, positive reaction to pecan and apple pies? Or is that a strictly Irish thing?
Of course, the 'American pie' that they make on the Great British Bake-Off looks nothing like actual American pies, so there's that.

I am sure that somewhere in the Netherlands you can buy pumpkins, but I have no idea where. So, pumpkin pie is unpopular here. I have never seen it. No idea how it tastes like. I have eaten a pie with pecan and bananas, but that too is rare. Pecan is available in chocolate or in ice cream. And even as nuts to be eaten with a drink. Apple pie is very popular here. Of course we add sugared whipped cream to it. The American variation looks a bit dull. Ours look like this: We have specialized shops selling all kinds of cakes and pies. Often a bakery sells those and fresh bread too. That one above is a typical bakery, photographed during the Easter season, so they sell all kinds of candy eggs too. Mostly using chocolate, praline or marzipan. The shop above doesn't sell bread. It is photographed just before Sinterklaas. That is a children's tradition, which predates Santa. The 5th of December in the Netherlands and the 6th in Belgium is his birthday. So the shops are themed to that festivity. A typical gift is a chocolate letter, resembling the first letter of the first name of the child. Instead of chocolate this pastry is common during Sinterklaas too. Everything you see in those shops is hand made by a baker. Some even make their own chocolate letters. Only supermarkets sell stuff made in factories. When you are asleep, the baker is making fresh bread and pastries. Edit: I almost forgot "dolls" made of speculaas. Speculaas is eaten all year round with coffee or tea, but the dolls are only available during Sinterklaas.

About the other pies in that video, only the cherry pie is known here as far as I know. However we have a variation of that, which is called a vlaai. The people in that video complained about the light flavor, but here the flavor would be real and strong. A vlaai comes in many variations.

That bakery looks almost exactly like a bakery close to my house (Edmonton, Canada) which is German or Austrian based. I go there when I want really good bread. Also I always look at all of the fantastic desserts but never buy them.

What I don't like is that they rarely use sugar in their whipped cream.

Talking about pastries... Today I had a pastry, which we Dutch call a "roombroodje" (which means cream bun). It is a bun of sweet white bread, filled with vanilla cream, and decorated with powdered sugar. It appears to be typical Dutch, because there was no entry about it in the English Wikipedia.

I love simple dishes, like steamed dishes. Today I am eating chicken with cauliflower, broccoli, peas, mushroom and risotto with a cheese sauce. All is fresh and only takes 7 minutes in the microwave.

I'm making some 'Whatever ya got' Chili.
It is what it says, no real recipe just whatever you have in the pantry at the time.
I was initially aghast that I had no red kidney beans left, I always have some of them. 'Oh well' I shrugged and just added a 2nd can of baked beans, because it is 'whatever ya got'.
Ingredients:
1 cut up and pan fried onion 2 cans of baked beans 1 can of black olives 1 large can of stewed tomatoes About 1 half of a jar (the last half) of spicy salsa. (This is a good way to add some spice to your chili without going overboard and without adding hot spices or hot sauce.)
All of this goes into my slow cooker and I'll just let it go for hours on low. May not have any of it today as I'll probably this evening stick it in the fridge. Chili is always better day two I think.

An oliebol is a Dutch dumpling traditionally eaten during New Year. They are either homemade, sold by bakeries or sold at markets and streets. Young woman with a cooking pot filled with oliebollen (plural of oliebol, painted by Aelbert Cuyp, ca. 1652). An appelflap is a kind of apple fritter, which is usually eaten during New Year too. Appelflap is the Dutch name for a type of pastry. The appelflap is made of puff pastry, is triangular in shape and filled with a mixture of apple cubes and cinnamon, possibly supplemented with almond paste, succade, currants, and/or raisins. During or immediately after baking, granulated sugar is sprinkled over the appelflap. Quality appelflappen (plural of appelflap) are distinguished by the use of butter instead of margarine and the addition of lemon zest and a little rum flavor in the filling. Both the oliebol and appelflap should be served warm, but can also be eaten cold. Happy New Year!

Funny how food has come full circle, years ago vendors hocked their wares and you bought from them on the street, delivery wagons would come to your dwelling with their wares.
Then as we became 'advanced' and more mobile people ate at fast food places or at restaurants and would come to the food places.
Now even before the pandemic we have food trucks going various places with their food and with the pandemic all sorts of delivery services for food.

Nom nom nom nom nom
Made a batch of Beerfish cookiebiscuits last night.
They are what their name suggests a cross between cookies and biscuits. Larger than a cookie, smaller than a biscuit, a bit of a rise like a biscuit but not to full biscuit height, squashed a bit like a cookie.
I usually just wing the recipe, this latest batch is really really good. I think the reason is for a change i used real butter, also some raisins and just the right amount of vanilla.
Yum yum

Had this really good soup my grama made. Never had anything quite like it before. Lamb, apples, onions, raisins, turmeric, black pepper, and a few other things. If I’d seen the recipe I don’t think it’d taste good, at least to my sensibilities. I however, would be dead wrong. It was so good. I love lamb though.

Also got mini challah bread, the size of a croissant. I did not know this wonderful thing existed and am made better for the acquaintance. And the liberal om-noms.
