I recently bought an RTX 3090 straight from EVGA using their email notification system. Honestly, I wasn't expecting to get an RTX 3000 series card until early 2021 but I couldn't resist the temptation even when it cost a whopping $1850 after tax and shipping. Thus I've begun my quest to build a brand new PC around the RTX 3090. As you all know, there's a unprecedented high demand for the RTX 30-series graphics cards, Radeon 6000 series graphics cards, and Ryzen 5000 series CPUs. While both AMD and Nvidia are claiming the excessive demand is the main cause for the shortage, there are also supply issues as companies like TSMC are struggling to get wafers, substrate, and components to build their products. To make matters worse, many scalpers are using automated bots to buy these high end PC parts and reselling them at over 50% premium. PC gaming is dead? Right, I wish. So how does one acquire the necessary components for a new PC build when everything is out of stock? By camping at Newegg every night at 8PM (EST), refreshing the product page, and spamming the "Add to Cart" button when you finally see it in stock. That's how I got a Ryzen 5900X and a 5950X without giving a cent to scalpers. As a good sibling, I decided to keep the 5950X for myself and let my brother have the 5900X. I also got other components for the build. Asus X570 Crosshair 8 Hero2x16GB G.SKILL Trident Z Neo DDR4 3600 CL162x1TB Samsung 980 Pro SSDSeasonic FOCUS GX-1000 PSUEK AIO 360 CPU CoolerCreative Sound Blaster AE-7 (Because I'm old school) Noctua NF-S12B redux-1200 120mm PWM FansLian Li O11 Dynamic XL CaseFirst, take out the CPU and admire it. Because I probably won't see it again in years after I install the cooler. Second, open the PC case and enjoy that carcinogenic smell. Third, install the mounting screws for the AIO cooler. Install the CPU on the socket and finally, mount the motherboard to the motherboard tray. Screw the fans to the AIO radiator. Personally, I prefer to mount the radiator to the top of the case. Mount the CPU cooler to the CPU and install the 120mm Noctua case fans. Cable management will have to wait. I'm just so glad that I didn't get more fans with RGB. There are already too many cables to navigate through even without RGB. I will finish the rest of the build tomorrow. Fun fact, this is my first AMD CPU in almost 14 years. My last AMD was an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ on Socket 939. Hopefully the 5950X doesn't disappoint me.

Am I right that this is only a problem at the high end? I didn't have any problem rebuilding my rig in October, but I've always been a bottom-feeder.

Am I right that this is only a problem at the high end? I didn't have any problem rebuilding my rig in October, but I've always been a bottom-feeder. Mainly the RTX 30-series (RTX 3060 Ti, 3070, 3080, and 3090), Radeon 6000 series (RX 6800, 6800 XT, 6900 XT), and Ryzen 5000 series CPUs (Ryzen 5 5600X, 7 5800X, 9 5900X, and 9 5950X). However, no one really knows when those components will be widely available and you can just purchase them normally without putting yourself on a long waiting list, or trying to beat scalpers' bots. Keep in mind that Nvidia is rumored to launch the 3080 Ti in February. If the leaked info is accurate, it is basically an RTX 3090 with 20GB GDDR6X memory and will cost $1000 (versus 3090's 24GB and $1500 MSRP). On top of that, the 3060 is also scheduled to be released along with the 3080 Ti. So it's hinting that things might be better after March. I also had trouble finding the 1000-watt Seasonic PSU and the Noctua NH-D15 chromax CPU cooler. I had to wait a couple months for the Seasonic PSU and the Noctua chromax cooler was pretty much never in stock. That's kind of why I decided to go with the EK AIO cooler instead.

Nicely done. I wish I had the aptitude or desire to build my own. Maybe some day. (I recently upgraded to a mid level Dell, don;t hate me for it.)

Day 2. Time to install the Samsung SSD and put in the last screw into the motherboard. I know some people have missed this last screw because it's hidden under the NVMe heat shield. Although it's probably not needed, it's better to put it in to reduce the motherboard flex as modern high-end video cards are quite heavy. Follow the motherboard manual and put the DDR4 memory into the correct slots to make sure they will be in dual-channel mode. Ryzen CPUs love fast memory and extra memory bandwidth. Carefully push the RTX 3090 video card into the top x16 PCI Express slot. There's actually very little flex or "sag" because the video card cooler kind of just rests itself on the motherboard. Install the Sound Blaster AE-7 sound card into the last PCI Express slot. It is a x16 PCI Express slot, so it should be more than enough to handle a tiny x1 PCI Express sound card. Finally, plug in all the power cables like giant ATX plug, 4 and 8-pin 12v ATX, and the 3 8-pin PCI Express plugs on the video card. Turn on the PC and hope it doesn't blow up. Not gonna bother with cable management until I make sure everything work properly. It's alive! While the BIOS that comes with the motherboard recognizes the new 5950X CPU right away, it is still recommended to update it to the latest BIOS to improve component compatibility, overall system stability, overclockability, and even performance because it also updates AMD's AGESA code. Just download the latest BIOS from the motherboard manufacturer, put it on a USB thumb drive, and flash the BIOS. It is a scary process but as long as you don't accidentally turn off the PC during the flashing process or lose power, you should be fine. After the BIOS flash is complete, remove the thumb drive, and restart the PC. Now I can finally play with the BIOS settings, but let's leave the overclocking settings alone for now. Instead, install Windows and enjoy those 16 CPU cores plus the 16 virtual ones from SMT. I'm kind of glad that I use an AIO cooler on the 5950X. It runs very hot and along with the RTX 3090, I probably don't need my heater this winter. So far this has been very educational for me because I had to learn a few new things about the Ryzen platform. Building a new PC can be very a frustrating experience right now as demand outstrips supply. Let's hope 2021 will be a better year.

I was going to build a PC for myself at the end of this year, but I had to push it back. 2020 has been hard on the $$.
Nonetheless, that's an impressive rig. Waaayyy out of my budget, but very impressive.

Impressive build, that's for sure, congrats! I wanted to build me a new rig myself, but then I looked at the upcoming games and decided to push that project down to the bottom of my priorities list.

I am actually in the process of building my Ryzen Machine... Though as some have said money has been tight. So still getting other parts first then will get the motherboard and processor down the line... Maybe by November this year I will have everything.

My last Creative card was SB Live! (stupid name btw), but I had several before that. Once I bought proper studio speakers I was forced to buy a USB DAC as well. The sound quality just wasn't up to par.
Creative Wave Studio is way old, I'm impressed that it still works. Back in the day I had these massive stereo speakers and an amplifier hooked to my SB line out. Then I made a WAV file of pure 33Hz sine wave and played it. You couldn't hear anything, but the whole room was vibrating, it was cool.

Actually it was like going backwards because Amiga computers had autoconfiguring card slots before PLUG'N'PRAY came to exist... the scanner SCSI cards were most awful of them all. Oh the horror stories I have from my youth as helpdesk & IT-Admin Tell me about it. Three of my early 1990's tech stories: 1. One of my relatives deleted the SYSTEM..INI... file from a Windows 95 machine. I had to rewrite the file in safe mode. 2. Back on a 486 machine that had 8 SIMM ram slots that when I put in the eight chips in different orders would give different amounts of ram. One way would give 8 MB another 16 MB then another was 24 MB. What was strange is when I would remove them power down and put them in one of the previous orders what had given 8 MB now gave 24 MB. And what gave 16 MB would give 8 MB and so on. It. Was. Weird.
3. Yes.
SCSI cards and connection were annoying for me too. Scanners in particular. It was like trying to play pin the tale on the donkey to get them to work all the way through a scan.

So there are three old guys reminiscing about early PC tech. That would be brilliant, if I didn't get the notion that we've become somewhat redundant.

So there are three old guys reminiscing about early PC tech. That would be brilliant, if I didn't get the notion that we've become somewhat redundant. Well redundancy is a good thing in computers. Though Windows 10 tries to destroy that constantly with me. Anyway I got to get some sleep 24 Hours up is not something I should continue.

Yeah I bit into computers when I was 6 to 7 years old, fixed moms work CP/M machine when I was 9... Have seen the first home micros and programmed TELMAC etc. I worked in IT from 1994 to 2009 and changed profession but still working with computers (games). You started earlier than I did. The first PC I was taught to use was the IBM PC. And I changed to healthcare in 2008. But I have always been in love with everything electronic, and always will be.
I have to admit though, a year ago when I built a new PC for myself my fingers felt a bit stiff for the job. Never have had that before, dang it.

Currently doing a PC build myself. Funnily enough the only reason it’s taken me so long to get to actually building it are the case fans I ordered. Apparently they’re being shipped from China and I’ve had no indication of when they will arrive for two weeks. I’ll have to see about some pictures of my new components.
