Mind if I insert myself and my question here? I got a Ryzen 7 5800 recently. Not the X, I didn't see need for unlocked CPU after I never actually overclocked my 2500K. I play mostly ArmA, but also played and finished over 100 hrs of Kingdom Come, a little DCS, and a bit of Wargame Red Dragon... All of those, the CPU ran around the 80 degree celsius mark. Now, I got CP2077 (local retailer - and my local I mean, one of the biggest two in the country - had a good sale so I went for it) and playing it the processor runs up to 95 degrees celsius, no problem and stays there for the whole session. I've been limiting my sessions due to this significantly. I wanted to ask, how bad is it? SUpposedly 95 is the very top bracket for "still in spec" but I'm worried to run the game for extended periods of time, or even on a daily basis in short sessions to not damage the CPU.I have also asked AMD themselves about how the temperature would affect the CPU in the long term, but I figure I can get a variety of decent answers here quickly, and then get the definitive one out of them eventually. ...and if it's not good news, I'll have a chat with the builders. Silverhand style. If your using Ryzen Master: Try setting the following:
TDC 100
PPT 115
EDC: 80 Also set your Maximum Processor State to 99% under Processor power management in the Windows 10 power plan.
This should bring your temperatures down. If you want to know why the 5800 series runs hot then here is a video that explains a lot of it:

Mind if I insert myself and my question here? Certainly not, please do. processor runs up to 95 degrees celsius It's bad. While the CPU can take it, it will degrade more than usual. how the temperature would affect the CPU in the long term Temperatures like that will shorten the life span of the CPU for sure. I've been avoiding the subject of CPU degradation like the plague, but let's just say that, when it comes to longevity, the cooler the CPU is, the better. The 5800 typically runs a bit hot, so I'd like to see temps somewhere around 80C. And what bmwcrazy already wrote.

Though things have been made more durable compared to say 1985 computer chips. It is still not something to be over looked.

Silverhand style. The 5800 is supposed to be only available to OEMs. So I guess you bought a prebuilt PC. I believe the Zen 3 CPUs start to thermal throttle at 90C or 95C, so your 5800 is definitely hitting the thermal limit in CP2077. AMD will tell you that 95C is "within" specs and it's perfectly safe, but that also means the CPU is downclocking itself in order to prevent damage and you're leaving a lot of performance on the table. If I were you, I would ask the system integrator (AKA your PC builders) about the high temperatures. They really should've used a better CPU cooler. A better cooler means your CPU won't thermal throttle, can boost higher, and perform much better. It is something that they shouldn't save money on. It doesn't seem to matter whether it is liquid or air cooled on the 5800's it seems. I was thinking on getting the 5800x -till I saw the conflict on temperature.
Even people with liquid cooling end up running near the temperature limit:
Even this guy claims it and you see some of his results:
Granted when you have the part the best thing to do is to mitigate the issues as I posted above. I am actually of the conclusion as the first guy in first video I linked stated. Its two-fold: How the CPU is binned -weaker soldier or less contact with the Internal Heat Spreader. And the motherboard/OS software: PBO/RM.

Nah, I say it's a bad CPU cooler or a bad mount on the cooler. I just hope it's not a Dell/Alienware where they simply use this thing to cool their Ryzen 5800 systems.

Why are Alienware desktops so bad when their laptops are so good. Well for one reason in my opinion is that since the laptops are beefy but the desktops usually weird shapes leads to bad air flow.

IF this was just a bad mount, bad CPU cooler or someone who has never put together a computer I would be inclined to agree. The trouble is it isn't just your common person who is having these temperature spikes -even professionals are having them. Actually this guy on Linus' forum explains it quite well I think. It is indeed the hardware makeup of the chip... And I quote:
To give visual representation to what he means: This the hardware design of the 5600X and 5800 and 5800x:
This is the 5900 and 5950X Hardware design: Basically the 5800x is the top of this tower:

In comparison....my 10900kf sometimes goes up to about 45 to 48 degrees C when I am gaming for a long time.....But also that is because Intel's Turbo Boost is kicking in and the core clocks are like a jumping bean. But when I stop playing and I sit at idel with nothing open on my desktop, no active programs....the CPU immediately, instantly cools down and idles at 30.
I have never seen a CPU do this....the last CPU I had the 6850K was auto-OC'd in the BIOS to 3.7 Ghz instead of 3.6 stock, but the core clocks never went crazy and even under load it never got about 45 C, so I was concerned.
I spoke to one o the Techs at the store that built it for me (or should I say rebuilt after a diagnostic), and they said with Intel's turbo boost that is built in, that causes the core clocks to jump based on the active program...so if it's a game, it is giving you the best performance possible to make the game run as smooth as possible....and as far as (my) temperatures are cocnered, he'd said those are amazing temperatures even under a load like 4K Gaming. Most modern CPUs hit around 60 to 70 degrees under gaming loads, so for (my) CPU to not even hit 50-- and then immediately cool down to 30 or lower after is incredible performance. Indicates that the H115iPro RGB XT 280mm Cooler I have is doing its job exceptionally well and is far more cooling than I actually need.
Temperature spikes can be scary, but I wuold speak with your Builders if you have a branded PC (Digital Storm, Origin,iBuyPower etc)

I can’t wait for my new pc to arrive so I can die in 4K what CPU have you chosen? What 4K monitor do you have? (my previous 4K was the ACER 321HK.....32 inches, 4K, 120hz (oc to 144), 2 ms Response Time, G-Sync.....Everything a man could want) And from the day I got it, the moment I connected it I had nothing but problrms. The monitor would flash on/off, picture/no picture. I swapped out three GPUs, changed power cables, changed monitors....even tried different PCs. Same problem. Turned out the G-Sync Module was defective. That POS cost me 1600 CAD. I returned it got a full refund and I bought my current monitor which I've had since July 7th of 2020. The PD3200U from BENQ. It's meant for Designing, but it's a great Gaming monitor as well. And it was half the price of the POS ACER. ACER is on my list of "Never Buy Again. EVER."

Temperature spikes can be scary, but I wuold speak with your Builders if you have a branded PC (Digital Storm, Origin,iBuyPower etc) There is nothing wrong with this. Those numbers are what I would call my own.
They are what I would consider the result of a very well built, very well balanced and very well designed computer.
Be warned though if it gets cold there and into the negative number -celsius or fahrenheit you may find your system stuttering in the cold.
If so put it under heavy load.
That said running at 45*C under load...
Sounds like how I like my builds to be. I prefer them to have low temperatures like those. I actually set 60*C as the high temperature. Anything above that will require lowing the max pull of the CPU and GPU.
Strangely enough doing so seems to give performance back no matter if I am using the decrepit FX Processor or the Ryzen system here.

I would love a Westinghouse Monitor -Had one long ago that last 10 years.
Now I am regulated to ASUS and LG -BenQ not really available here. Ordered one and said three month back order -no thank you. Went with a LG somecodesomethingorother.

Not to highjack this thread, but anoher question popped into my mind: I have a spare 512GB M.2 in a second slot sitting beneath the GPU, right now it has nothing on it. Presently as I only have 4 of 10 games installed (the 10 include the ME OT, MEA, DA II, DAI, ANTHEM, Jedi: Fallen Order, HZD and the Tomb Raider Trilogy), the latter four are what is installed and I have over 700GB FREE Space of a useable 930 on my 1TB bootable 970 Plus M.2.
With the 512 Pro going presently unused....I would like to somehow copy all my games to that M.2 and use that one exclusively as my Game Drive. How would I do that if the games are already presently installed on my 970? Is it a matter of somehow copying the files over from one drive to the other, or can I re-install the games again on the second drive (without losing any progress in Shadow of the Tomb Raider though I don't believe I would because it is a digitual download with Cloud saves.)
Thoughts? I would just lkiket ohave as much free space on my bootable drive as possible especially if I plan to install more games.

ACER is on my list of "Never Buy Again. Actually I bought a Acer SFF thingy for my mom few years back. Small, cheap and quiet, came with a 4 core Corei5 and Win8 license. Has worked flawlessly for years, upgraded to Win10 without a hitch. She uses it for paying the bills and surfing the net and social media. And it's good for that. That said, however, I wouldn't recommend the brand for anyone. Very little money seems to go into the quality of the components.

Not to highjack this thread Already happened, nothing to be done about it. How would I do that if the games are already presently installed on my 970? Steam has something like that: link

Alll I'm doing is running a Full Scan with Bit Defender Total Security....and my CPU is heating up, bouncing between 60s and 70 degrees C. I've NEVER seen it this high! bouncing all over the 60s and up to 70 degreees just on a virus scan!

Oh, okay....so it is normal behaviour and perfectly safe temperature range given the intensity of the task using all cores....... (breathes heavy sigh of relief). Thank you. Scared me there for a minute, was wondering why my CPU was throttling so hard on a virus scan. (My only previous experience was the 6850K and I never saw that go about 45 even on Scans)....But this is a different architecture and everything......And the 10900 is known to run hot. I'm just still getting used to it, I guess. Still finding out what is really good cooling (low temps) what is average idle temps....and up the scale to what is full load Gaming temps to way beyond what is safe normal....and then "oh sh*t, I just burnt the house down!"

And I quote: 5800X are hot because it's using single CCX and it's actually really tiny. So you have all this heat concentrated in tiny spot. I run my 5800X on Liquid Freezer II 240mm and it's usually at 88°C almost instantly during all core loads at 4.4GHz. I think 5900X actually does better because it has 2 CCX's under that IHS which spreads heat quite a bit. You can't quite compare 6700K to 5800X. Later literally has 2x as much cores and threads and runs them at very similar clocks. I just don't care anymore. No matter what I did it's instantly closing to 90°C. Until it's past 90°C I just won't obsess over it. And I don't want to make it excessively noisy. A 4.4ghz all-core overclock is no joke on the 5800X. To sustain that kind of overclock, you'll need some serious cooling and 88-90C on a really good 240mm AIO cooler is expected. If he ran a 5900X or 5950X with the same 4.4ghz all-core overclock on that Liquid Freezer II 240mm AIO, he would be hitting the thermal limit all day without undervolting. To give visual representation to what he means: This the hardware design of the 5600X and 5800 and 5800x:
This is the 5900 and 5950X Hardware design: Yeah, I know. That's why I suspect it's a bad cooler or a bad mount. Ideally, you want a CPU cooler with a square bottom that's large enough to cover the entire IHS. Because the CCX on the 5800 is also positioned off center, you need to make sure the mounting pressure on the cooler is spread evenly and also has enough thermal compound to cover the entire IHS. Unfortunately, not every system integrator or OEM knows this. Dell and Alienware just use the Intel cooler with a round bottom. Also remember that AMD gives the 5800 a TDP of only 65 watts versus the 105 watts on the 5800X. That means it's clocked lower than the 5800X and it should run a lot cooler as well. Getting 95C in CP2077 is a bit unacceptable to me and whoever built the system needs to do a better job.
