It can be, but it doesn't need to be. And high quality DAC:s have very good filtering. One of the reasons why I purchased a DAC was, that there's much less audible interference. Yeah, it really depends on how good your DAC and amp are but your headphones also matter. High quality headphones and especially IEMs are very sensitive and they can pick up the smallest electrical noise from your DAC and amp. My IEMs like the U12t can easily pick up the hiss from my Burson Soloist amp. My old MSI Z97 Mpower motherboard's USB ports were also very noisy that I couldn't even use some of my cheap DACs without hearing the ground loop noise and whatever noise coming from the GPU activity. (Yes, I even made sure the PC, DAC, and amp were all plugged into the same Cyberpower UPS with sinewave.) Fortunately, that's not a problem for my Schiit Bifrost Multibit DAC, but I still use an optical cable instead just to be safe. If you have ever experienced such issues, it really drives you nuts.

Do you know any low profile sound cards that are capable of 7.1 at 444Hz NOT 440 HzWasn't Unicephalon 40-D an audio guy? And how does one tag another user? Yes. put @ before their username -be sure you get the right name -if they changed it since they have joined it will not work. For instance you tag me its: "@"thelastvanguardian -not "@" atemporalvanguardian... Remembering to remove the: "

I honestly don't know how it happens No one does. It's one of those things that audio guys keep hearing. I once tried explaining to a musician about signal interference, filtering and signal noise reduction, but he was having none of it. He said that nothing could be done about the noise, because no one understood how it came to be in the first place. Well okay then.. USB connection is quite noisy It can be, but it doesn't need to be. And high quality DAC:s have very good filtering. One of the reasons why I purchased a DAC was, that there's much less audible interference. Our ears are just more sensitive to the environment. In my case the nails on the chalkboard and I get physically sick.
And that is why he is a musician and not an audio technician.
Besides a high quality DAC's can a long USB cable quiet the noise? If so that explains why my pathetic C-Media DAC doesn't have any coil whine since its connected via 5ft USB cord.

can a long USB cable quiet the noise? Nope. Any length of lead will act as an aerial and pick up interference. Your DAC probably just has good filtering and a ferrite noise suppressor.

I'd say there are no easy solutions:
1. How's your Linux? Maybe a Linux -based file server? I used to have a Lubuntu PC with a couple of HDDs; easily the best non-NAS solution I've had. 2. Better still, an actual DIY Linux NAS? More tinkering though.
3. A Prebuilt NAS, but that will cost a lot. 4. An External HDD Bay?

First thanks for the out of the box thinking.
1. My Linux is non existent. 2. See #1 3. Yeah this is for the personal build -already have off and on-site storage. 4. Why? Motherboard has six connectors plus see #3.
Maybe I should just double the drive sizes -except main: Drive 1 -1 TB Main OS drive
Keep at 2 TB
Drive 2 -2TB: GAMES MK1 Up to 4 TB
Drive 3 -2TB: GAMES MK2 Up to 4 TB
Drive 4 -2TB: OVERFLOW Up to 4 TB
Drive 5 -4TB: EDITATION Up to 6 or 8TB not sure. This drive fills up fast.
Drive 6 -1 TB VIDEO FILES Up to 4TB Sound feasible or overkill?

Up to 4TB Sound feasible or overkill? 4TB for video isn't much these days. Because of 4k and such? 1080p or 720p or even 360p is fine with me.
Well I take my DVD TS Video files and convert them. A 45 episode of MacGyver -OLD -not new comes in at only 465 MB.
A two parter only gets around 700MB. Seems the best way to keep the degradation the least in video and audio playback is:
Convert to Hx264 at 720p that is then forced to a resolution of 1080p and then save it into the MKV format.

Why? Motherboard has six connectors plus see #3. I just thought it would be handy since you are already running out of space. It's easier and cheaper to add more drives than it is to replace the old drives with new bigger ones. Well the drives are already over 5 years old.
New ones are needed anyway.
Going to clone the current ones on to the new drives. But since this new system is going to be a workhorse and a daily driver got to get better drives.
So leaving WD Black and going for Seagate Exos... WD Enterprise is a joke. NAS drives would lack the performance needed as well.
Never thought I would see the day when I would leave WD... After Seagate bought my favorite hard drive maker and ripped their soul out I swore I would never go back.
RIP Maxtor I knew you well. PS Maxtor -don't roll over in your grave at what Seagate turned you into -one Frankenstein is enough.

Well in the future -Star Trek -at least it is finally given a name. Shalaft's Syndrome -or maybe that would be the extreme version. Like the clattering of cuttlery or the banging of a metal spoon on the edge of a glass jar. Or the cracking of ice cubes out of the tray into the box all at once...... *covers ears and cringes* Those sounds and more only serve to intensify my already severe Tinnitus You forgot the worst: Wet finger circling the the open jar...

Are headphones now actually capable of real 5.1 and 7.1? I know they used to make actual 5.1 headphones and headsets with multiple drivers in different positions but honestly none of them was any good. I'm a bit old school so I prefer traditional "audiophile-approved" stereo headphones with a cable and a good standalone microphone. For gaming and movies, the software for Sound Blaster cards all do a pretty descent job simulating surround sound through stereo output. So there's really no need for me to get any 5.1 or 7.1 headphones. I mean why would I use a 7.1 gaming headset when I could use my $800 Audeze LCD-2 or my $3000 Focal Utopia?
