Yeah I just was thinking it could also rip all the capacitors right out of the motherboard... Take it to shop and they ask how a tornado hit the inside of the case... Though may still be able to apply it in the exhaust...
What you think: [snip]
I don't see why not. It's weird, but I like it. Only one way to find out.

What would be your guide to getting the vortex effect? rewindbutton has been on point, and I didn't read to the end so apologies if this has been mmentioned - You are fighting convection. Invert your exhaust to the top, intake on bottom. Even if you are using an AIO and the radiator is on top, your GPU will be cooler in this configuration with a negligible increase in CPU temp, vs how you have it where the GPU will suffer. My case, L-L PC011B, has three Noctua Chromax A12x15 as intake on bottom (two of them blowing cool air directly into the intake fans on the 3070 Gaming X-trio), the three Corsair ML120 fans that came with my H150i as intake on the side (too loud as rad fans) and 3 Phantek F120MPs (great fans, very pleased) as exhaust on the radiator. This is the final version of this build, and I am happy with it. I initially tried to build it as radiator side intake, but the size of my GPU prevents this. I had to use thin fans on bottom regardless of direction they flow, as full size fans down there impede motherboard I/O. I then built it as you intended, with airflow fighting convection. My CPU under simple CPUID benchmarking was 1°c cooler, and the GPU 7° warmer. These results were reflected in some gaming tests (CP2077, ME3MP, Alpha Protocol (lol)). I found this unacceptable, and reassembled an almost third time. So, FWIW, try to use convection in your airflow design.

Tornado inside a computer is something I don't want after all -especially if it could lead to damage of the motherboard components.
Well the irony here is I am building in the Thor V2 case that has a HUGH side panel vent. A vent which is a mesh metal -hard metal. Which has a default 200mm fan installed but is removable.
With this being a vented side panel I want to fully implement it. I plan to remove the default 200+ side panel fan and put four 120's in its place.
Since four 120's at 2000 or even 3000 RPM will move more air faster than a 200mm at 900 RPM. It will also be less tear and wear on the fans making sure they last a longer time that 200mm ever would.
It almost a certainty that the case will be laying down and not in standard vertical position: So now trying to direct air flow where can take full advantage of its side panel. Any thoughts on my undesired and unconventional ideas is welcomed. Since for me it is raw efficiency that matters...

First throwing away the Rosewill fans -junk not using. Now as to setup... maybe this: Maybe get Noctua NF for intake -I think that is 1200 RPM And go with the NF Industrial 3000 RPM for Exhausts? So again maybe Noctua NF-A12x25's for the graphics card.

Or maybe this: REMEMBER THIS IS A LAYING DOWN FORMAT: Isolate the Graphics card and the CPU.
Pull air into the graphics card from bottom and pulled up and out the side panel. Pull down from the side panel into the CPU and out the top of the case. Worse isn't it or is it better by isolating the GPU and CPU?
EDIT:
As I think about it I want to believe this would actually create two dual vortex areas as they are air overloaded... Is that true or I just overthinking it?
Or would 2 3000 RPM exhaust be powerful enough to override 3 1200 RPM Intake on the GPU? And vice versa for the CPU portion? The previous idea is better isn't it?

Interesting case... Never used a 230mm fan before, might be really quiet if it moves air well, low rpms, but I don't know anything there.
Here is the cooling potential of that rig, according to neweggy -
Looking at that, and considering your plan for a horizontal layout, there is no "bottom" intake. So, for an all air cooled rig, avoiding a vortex is a little tricky!
Sorry if you have already explained this, but why are you wanting to go horizontal with this? I believe it is not optimal for best cooling, but you may have a valid reason.

Good grief talking in two different orientations can get confusing -well to others probably -am I immune?
That said... If you missed it I said I was also taking out the default crappy fans and replacing with 120's across the board.
I personally believe that120's are just more efficient specially when both are at high RPM.
Not to mention if 120's fail they are easily replaced versus 200mm fan -inexpensive vs expensive. Also again in my opinion 120's allow a more direct focused airflow than the 200 cover it all approach I would believe. Steve gives some more reasons default fans gotta go:
And since sound is not important here I don't care how loud they are at full speed -120's that is.
Have you ever heard the difference between 120 and 200? The latter sounds like it will vibrate ALOT more so -Here:
If that were to continue upward -if you know what your doing you can push past the fan limits too. It would definately start vibrating.
Just give me that 120 focused breeze... let someone else go use a 200mm fan and be Dorothy in Oz.

So, for an all air cooled rig, avoiding a vortex is a little tricky! Sorry if you have already explained this, but why are you wanting to go horizontal with this? I believe it is not optimal for best cooling, but you may have a valid reason. Several reasons actually. Forgive the long responses -will put in spoiler format: 1.
GPU/Weight/Sag/Breaking:
It avoids Graphics card sag... I have had a graphics card break in the slot when it had so much extra 3rd party heat-sink weight and 120mm fans on it. And by breaking I mean the PCIex16 strip on the graphics card literally broke off in the slot. Granted this is in the time before reinforced PCIe slots.
2.
CPU/Weight/Sag/Breaking:
My system is using the DH15 twin tower CPU cooler from Noctua. That doesn't seem bad right?
Well take a look at this: Mine also has a fan on top of the heat-sink in horizontal position. It is pushing air down onto the heat-sink -seems to decrease temperature spikes. Not to mention increases speed of temperature cooldowns.
So in a sense: I am using a DH-15 4 fan mod.
THIS. IS. HEAVY.
Though with this weight I don't want to take the chance that it will warp the motherboard. 3. Vibration: I seem to have a habit of getting my CPU fans in each system into such synchronization... That they can actually cause my systems to start to vibrate if vertical. This has actually led to a scenario where I had the socket bracket literally break: Obviously when it broke the heatsink fell off into the case while the system is running.
Gravity took over and pulled the heatsink downward into the case -while its fans were still spinning.
By the time I got the system off and the side panel off the system had self destructed.
I tried anti-vibration kits but they never mitigated enough of it. So I tried getting a slab of rubber and sound damping on top of it and putting under the case. It helped but not enough putting my hand on the case it would just vibrate. Plus this cut off the bottom vents from pulling in or expelling any air.
The only way I got rid of over 75% of the vibration was to lay it on its side. It still vibrates but it has a lot less almost like I somehow put a gyroscope into the system. 4.
Hard drives: This is a simple one I use ALOT of hard drives - Nvme, M.2 and SSD are not viable for me. It is a simple cost to size ratio. I have to use FIVE 4TB drives. There is no 4 TB Nvme, M.2 or SSD that is less than $150 USD per unit. That said all of my drives in a tower case where the drives are horizontal seem to fail sooner -at least for me. Than drives that are vertical so turning the case on its side saves me the trouble of removing the the drive housing and turning on its side. Again sorry the responses are long and seem to matter little to the majority of people. I build computers to last but not just a few years but for decades. Two I have built have been running now for over 10 years. There are more reasons like I want to put the monitor on the computer but that is just a nostalgia issue.

Well I got my board. It is a shame that all the X570's around here are so overpriced. Want a X570 board give us $450+ ... Nope. You ain't price gouging me. I went with this board for three reasons: 1. Like the BIOS -very straight forward. ASROCK -best looking BIOS in my opinion but no boards here -X570 or B550's. MSI BIOS are just so tedious and can be confusing. ASUS BIOS too is confusing though not as much as MSI - sorry bmwcrazy don't mean to offend. I am a tweaker/modder so the fewer screens I have to go through the better it is when tweaking. Guess the brand yet? Bet so. 2. Has the BIOS flash back that I am certain I am going to need. 3. The thing seriously has EIGHT fan headers and SIX SATA ports! What is the downside? ANYWAY HERE IS THE BOARD I CHOSE:

This thread is going so fast I can't keep up! I'll just make a few general comments. - illusivechad has a point about convection, but since the case is laying flat, this shouldn't be an issue. He's also right about making adjustments after the build, if the cooling isn't up to snuff. - to balance the fans, check the manufacturer's spec sheets for cfm ratings. - I like the split design, it's the best one yet and gives you more granularity. Dell used to make cases like that. - you'll always get turbulence when the air flow hits a wall. In the case of the split design, it shouldn't matter much though. - I thought you were going to cut the bottom of the case open?

One thing that I would recommend is to update your BIOS to the latest version (F13h) so it gets the AGESA 1.2.0.2 microcode update. AGESA 1.2.0.2 actually fixes most of the PCIe 4.0 and USB connectivity problems. You definitely want to have that.

Though I may not have to update via the Flash.... If it will support an Athlon 3000G out of the box -got one for use as a backup should ever need another CPU. I will do it via the BIOS itself.

Unfortunately B550 only supports Ryzen 3000, 4000G (OEM only), and 5000 CPUs. To use the Athlon 3000G, you need to use an older chipset like the B450 or X470. Still, your mobo might be able to complete the POST with the 5800X if it already came with a relatively recent BIOS. Otherwise, you can use Gigabyte's BIOS flashback feature, I think it's called Q-Flash.

Still, your mobo might be able to complete POST with the 5800X if it already came with a relatively recent BIOS. Otherwise, you can use Gigabyte's BIOS flashback feature, I think it's called Q-Flash. If only could see the version of BIOS on the motherboard before ever powering it on...

check the manufacturer webpage, using a different PC and look up your model/series. For example, Gigabyte lists their BIOS versions and dates of release. We know, but that doesn't tell us which version of BIOS that the mobo was shipped with. Because of most of the B550 and X570 mobos have been in production for ages (since summer 2019 LOL), you still don't know for sure if the BIOS that the mobo came with from the factory would support your 5000 series CPU until you power it on. You could get an earlier version of BIOS that wouldn't recognize your brand new Ryzen 5800X. Only newer mobos like the Asus X570 Dark Hero are guaranteed to come with a BIOS that support these 5000 series CPUs. As long as your mobo supports BIOS flashback (being able to flash BIOS without a CPU or RAM), it's a minor annoyance. No big deal.

As long as your mobo supports BIOS flashback (being able to flash BIOS without a CPU or RAM), it's a minor annoyance. No big deal. Exactly. As I have heard other techies speak of winning or loosing the silicon lottery... It seems we have here a BIOS lottery!
Unless like me you hate updating the BIOS in this power finicky area.
That said I did pickup an ASROCK B450M-HDV R4.0 a week ago to fix my brothers computer -don't ask. And the BIOS it shipped with was from: 2019/11/27 Which is five behind the current most recent BIOS release.
Which of its 13 BIOS versions puts the board I bought at halfway through the BIOS releases.
So if logic follows: the Gigabyte board may have shipped halfway through its BIOS versions. Of which there are only SEVEN. And BIOS version F10 is halfway through the releases of the BIOS's Which is also the first that supports 5000 series.
If I could find on the board the actual stamp of its manufacture date then that would help at least. That would allow me to know theoretically what BIOS it may have likely shipped with. Can't ship with a BIOS that came after what was set to send to me... Do boards have a manufacture date stamp on them and if so where? I have looked and so far don't see it.

As long as your mobo supports BIOS flashback (being able to flash BIOS without a CPU or RAM), it's a minor annoyance. No big deal. I didn't have time to go directly to the actual BIOS page, but Vanguard did find it...and if you (since he) found it, the page does tell you the release dates of each BIOS version and it will also tell you the date of the BIOS version that was installed from the manufacturer both upon the release of the bord to the Market and the date of the BIOS version it was manufactured with, if both of the latter are not the same. My X99 Phoenix SLI goes all the way back to July of 2016 when I bought it brand new as a new model (but it was actually manufactured in late May and had the same BIOS version when it was shipped to stores as it did when it was first made..... F2, and the date on the BIOS was the last week of May. The same as when I bought it from NCIX and I haven't changed it since.) The most re cent BIOS versions are, sometime in 2018, but nothing after that. Each BIOS version will tell you what it was built to correct or what it's good for, like for example as you said support for the 5000 series CPUs......But I'm an Intel guy, I haven't used AMD since 2006 when the first and only AMD chip I had fused itself to the motherboard because it overheated.

Very happy with my Aorus x570 board. Need to pull my mobo speaker out though (didn't come with the board, so not their fault), getting tired of that chirp hehe. I have an old Lian-Li PC33 case laying around. You should buy it from me and mod that, the thing is awesome. Wait, it's not for sale! Because it's awesome. But you are inspiring me to mod it for better cooling 8) My final intuition about your cooling design with that case in a horizontal config - The "top" fans should be your exhaust. If you use them as intake, and the traditional "back" and perhaps another side/front fan, you run the risk of creating a hot loop into your cooling system. The intake on top will be drawing in hot exhaust as much as it will fresh air. This being my interpretation, I would max out your exhaust with 120/140mm fans out the "top" panel, and everything else as intake. Should actually create a good cooling I think. As rewindbutton has said, this will require balancing your fans either by rating or by settings. You may want a Corsair Commander or some other real PWM controller with a software interface, beyond your BIOS fan settings, but that depends on your concerns with noise.

With no side vents its ok for you to keep it. Didn't notice the blue and red sealed portions?
The red will be duct tape so back of case and front -if seen from standing position will be duct taped shut. The blue will be a piece of metal duct taped and sealed into the chassis locking the case into two zones.
While another piece of metal on the side panel will keep the exhaust and intake from mixing. Also it is designed this way since I see better cooling from fans blowing straight onto the graphics card then down upon. However since the CPU has a horizontal fan on it. ?Going to put side panel intakes as intakes for CPU. Sound doesn't matter to me so going Noctua 3000 RPM as always.
