Hey all, my overheating issues are not fixed. So on Monday I dropped my PC and the thermal bracket off at the shop. Dude put it in. Said there was nothing wrong before with the thermal paste or cooler seating. I tested it at home and the temp spike was now 90 instead of 98. OK, thermal bracket is working. Maybe that will be enough even though it still seems way too high. Things were fine for a while. Past few days I had crashes at 90C, weird. Might be the game, I hoped. Today I had two crashes in a row at 95C. So it can still get hot enough to crash apparently. Sigh. I have no idea why. I was really hoping resetting the cooler in combination with the bracket would help. So what exactly is the issue? If somebody I talked to didn't have the exact same cooler playing this exact game at 70C I would think the cooler is not good enough. Most of the time it runs at 60-70C but these spikes make it crash, it seems. I told my PC guy that it's recommended to undervolt the CPU to get the temps under control. He said that would void my warranty and he wouldn't recommend it. Said maybe go water cooling. Well, shit. If my system is unstable what else can I do but undervolt?? Really don't want to spend even more money on water cooling. I heard the pumps need to be replaced every 3 years or so. Yikes. What would you guys do? I'm so tired of this crap. Other people are running this CPU just fine. It's not even hot today. 22C in my room. I don't get it. If undervolting is too overwhelming for you..... I have two options for you that some may not really consider underclocking but can be applied the same way -from the OS. The first is to use a program called Core Temp and in options Enable "Overheat Protection" and set your settings. I personally have NOT used this feature so can't confirm or deny that it will help though. The second way is to do OS level underclocking -its hard to find depending on the OS but should give the same result and will NOT void warranty. Here is a work around that is like underclocking but will not loose as much performance. First type in the search box of the Taskbar for "Power Options" If you have access to the classic control panel -its in there. Once there you will notice the plan that is active and the hypertext to the right: "change plan settings". Click the hypertext. Next page will have the "turn off display" yada yada -ignore and go down to the "Change Advanced Power Settings" hypertext. Scroll till you find: "Processor Power Management" Expand its plus icon. Expand the plus icon next to: "Maximum Processor State" There will be a setting hypertext here that should say 100%. Start lowering it by 1% and then clicking apply and rebooting. Do this till the overheating stops. I HAVE DONE THIS METHOD AND I CAN CONFIRM IT WORKS. My thoughts are its a boosting error on the CPU somewhere or just 13K series being 13K series.

This can be a deep valley to go down True. only usually tell you about the overclocking. Undervolting is the new overclocking, so there's that, yes. But I'd rather undervolt and underclock, than use your OS method. Nothing wrong with it per se, that's just me. research per motherboard model can get a bit tedious True. Especially if there is not much been done on that model of the motherboard Which is why I go for the OC boards; they've been tested to the death. Sometimes literally. That said I am sorry to hear that your busy. Thanks. It's been one of those weeks, and there's worse to come.

For the last several months I have been getting a ton of sextortion emails to my Outlook account that I use for all my Gaming. I know they're totally bogus and I never do anything with them but they do say they got into my email account (and insert it in brackets) within the email as "proof". I know email accounts can be leaked to the Dark Web....and I'm not terribly concerned about that it's a "nothing account" that I just use for Gaming and Newsletters, nothing actually personal or important. It's just a pain in my fluffy ass that I'm getting about 20 of them a month. So I am strongly considering deleting that account and starting over with a fresh new account since this one is probably 20 years old.
My question is though....It's the address that I have tied to everything related to Gaming (Steam, EA App, various EA Newslettters etc)....I don't actually have any contacts, but how will it affect my Steam account and if I want to play my Steam games should I decide to close this particular email account and even create a new one to replace it?

We all have those weeks but I always try to make time for bugs people have here.Except this can put boards into to expensive of a price range -especially if you don't realize your going to need to do this in the first place. To complex of an procedure? If so there are some that would actually considering undervolting just as complex -especially if not sure about how much the offsets need to be. Also if the motherboard will not save the underclock or the undervoltage from stock then my way may be the last recourse anyway unless you get another motherboard and by the time this rears its head it may be to late for said refund.

If you delete the email before you change it then you will loose access to the accounts connected to the email if you ever forget your password and or email name. Although some launcher programs allows you to change emails. Steam will allow you to change your email address as long as you confirm it. In Steam under Account it gives the option to change your email. However be warned that when you do this Steam will require you to reinput your credit/debit card information. Steam will not tell you this outright but I see that as a safety feature not a hinderance. I know the Ubisoft launcher does the same as Steam. Though I don't know about Epic and I know the last time I used Origin it didn't.

If referring to the email account then yes make a new one and delete the old one after its up and running. I would not advise deleting it till after you set your new one to the EA and Steam accounts just incase they want to verify its you by sending confirmation to the old email. Simple way to do this is to run to browsers at once. Like Firefox and Vivaldi in my case. Log into the old email in one and the new one in the other and then you get access to both accounts.

So it's time. I need to have the ability to develop photos on a big computer, so I'll head Adobes detestable advice: "Upgrade your PC. Good luck. Bye".
I'll build a new desktop. I'm 12 years out of touch with the process. My main areas of concern/uncertainty: Why don't cases have front accessible bays any longer? I need to have a card reader/writer. It's even hard to find cases with a reasonable number of 3½ HD bays. I need at least 3. It seems most cases these days have the power supply at the bottom. Why? The SSD drive should be connected to a "M.2" interface?
My last 5 PC builds have all had Zalman coolers. They were highly engineered and worked exceptionally well. But Zalman fell victim to a fraud many years ago and don't exist any longer (someone did a hostile takeover, took a monumental loan and disappeared with the money, leaving Zalman to bankruptcy). So what cooler do I buy instead?
I'm thinking 12-core Ryzen 9 7900, but the 9700X is almost the same price but but comes without cooler. Also, it's 170W instead of 65W. I understand that metallic cooling paste is not used anymore? Why?
B650 or X670 MB? What's the difference? I have little interest in anything else than letting the CPU driver manage clocks at default settings.
What the hell is M.2 key E and Key M? And what are they used to besides the SSD? i.e. why do the MBs have 4 of them?
Geforce RTX 4060, Radeon RX 7600 or Radeon RX 6750? Or should I step up, RTX 4070 or RX7900?

Because most of those accessible drive bays were for CD/DVD drives that are now antiquated. You can still find these drives in slim drive cages -usually USB connected and outside the case. In some but not all cases the bottom placed PSU is to blow out air out the bottom but not always -I don't like it myself since it can also create a dust problem. M.2's are basically RAM sized SSD's. They are known by the form factor that they connect to the motherboard by: M.2. -an interface WAY faster than SATA II and Faster than the SSD of just a few years ago before the interface style became very dominant. The oddity is they MUST be connected straight to the motherboard in most senses to get the best results. This really depends on the CPU now. IF you go 7000's or 13K series its recommended to go liquid cooling- I would check Jayz2cents for water cooling advice if you go that route. Though you can go with air cooling but only if you go with high end air coolers: like The Peerless Assassin or the Noctua D15. The NON X of AMD line is a different matter though. The 7900 without the X will not necessarily boost to the 7900X speed nor will it go near the throttle limit like the 7900X's or the 13K series -which are now "supposedly" designed to go straight to max threshold temperature -95* C -the moment you put a load on it. Intel and AMD claim this is the way CPU's work now and they will function without degradation like this... I find this hard to believe. Also Metallic cooling paste? If you mean liquid metal -its still used but most only use it if they are liquid cooling but again I don't see why you couldn't use it if you don't want to -just keep an eye out for corrosion. Feature set. X670 would have more features than the B650. The way I look at it: The higher the board 1st number the more lines of CPU's it can support. The lower the letter -the fewer features the board has. X570 actually had to deviations: X570 and X570S -the only difference was the "S" board didn't have an active cooling fan for the chipset -which in my opinion was a better choice. M.2 Key E & M are basically to different connection types for a M.2 SSD drive. Think of it as both being equivalent to a hard drive with a PATA and a SATA connection. Depends on what the Picture development requires. If you need CUDA cores then Nvidia. If you need AI for it then I say AMD -though you may get different opinions on all of this. Sorry for the colored monstrosity but was trying to keep my thoughts straight. If more info need don't hesitate to ask. Hope this helps.

Hi Hieronymus. There's some good questions here, good points as well...I will address what I can. Drive bays aren't really a thing anymore because of form factor and size making them unnecessary (though I agree, if you're old school like me and a few others...they're handy to have. I was pissed that the H500M I have didn't come with a 5.25 inch bay for a Blu-ray player) but after a while I thought about it and realized I rarely used it anyway even when I had it) so I got used to not having it. Secondy, the absence of a drive bay even a tooless removable drivebay not only creates a cleaner aesthetic, but also improves airflow. forums.tomshardware.com/threads/psu-bottom-vs-top.239411/#:~:text=There%20are%20pro%27s%20and%20con%27s%3A%20Bottom%20mounted%201%29,at%20the%20expense%20of%20a%20hotter%20running%20psu. Card readers were a hot item for a while, but they became a fad, and mostly unnecessary to have on most cases for such a niche market of Users who would actually use them. And then for those purposes you could simply buy an external plug-in and be done with it. Bottom mounted PSUs are often more effecient as they don't add hot air directly onto the CPU, plus a bottom mounted PSU helps stablize the weight of the case more efficiently. Bseries Motherboards (ie those from Gigabyte) are for Intel builds and they are your bare bones basic motherboards, nothing fancy. the more expensive Z series are your high end Creator and Gaming focused Motherboards. As for the X lineup....Those are AMD, I belieive, which I'm not that familar with so perhaps someone else here with an AMD build can answer your questions about that more specifically. M-Key and E-Key, and B-Key, what's the difference? : Refers to the formfactor of the M.2 and also the interface. Drives called M-Keys supports both Sata and PCIE connections and are typically found in Drives that support NVMe such as Samsung's EVO lineup or more recently Western Digital's Black series, while the E-Key designates are specifically designed for Wireless LAN Cards and are usualy more of a plug-in fashion like a SATA card would be. More over, the number of pins is different, which impacts the number of PCIE lanes each Drive type can support. M-Keys can typically support up to 4 PCIE lanes while the E-Key designates can only support a single lane. There are also B-Keys which are typically found as traditional 2.5 inch SSDs. Newer motherboards have as many as 4 (usually M-Key M.2 slots in a form factor/size of 22110, 2240, 2260 2280; length in milimeters) because they are incredibly space-saving when connected to their dedicated slots, and they're blisteringly fast. Much, much, much faster than even the fastest 2.5 inch SSD on the market. As for your last question....only you can answer that one truthfully for yourself as it is a matter of personal preference. If it were me, I would go with the Nvidia-based 4060 or 4070 as I have never really had any luck at all with any AMD/ATI card....even when they were truly just ATI (before the merger). I supported them because they were a wholly Canadian company and because (at the time) they offered reasonably comparable performance for a smaller cost....But the QUALITY was never there. The only cards that have lasted me and served me well were Nvidia (specifically the now defunct EVGA line-up). But that's just my own experience. This last part....that's entirely up to you, my friend for many reasons. I hope I have answered these questions and points to your satisfaction and helped give you some clarity on certain topics.

Thank you. ^ Both of you. My new desktop is beginning to get defined. Btw. I've actually figured out why the PSU has moved to the bottom. It's sort of the opposite of what Bunny suggested. The old topside PSU sucked out warm CPU air from above. As long as a case is built with sufficient inlets, that works fine. ...But if you had too many case evacuation fans, the PSU would overcook and eventually fail. What has changed is that the GPU is now the biggest heat source in the computer. So instead of pulling all the heat past the CPU and trying to cool the PSU with air heated by both the GPU and CPU, lets put the PSU under the GPU instead. Now it suddenly makes sense to me, and I will not be as annoyed anymore. I'm pretty deaf when it comes to generic brand discussion of Intel vs AMD and Nvidia vs Radeon. It's all in each generation, not brand. Generally, I can say that Intel has mostly been shit in those periods when I have built a new computer. I know this because I was often forced to use Intel PCs at work, so I could compare. My current laptop has an 8th gen Core i7 though, and that's perfectly fine. Despite being a laptop CPU, it's just as fast as my 12 year old 6-core desktop Phenom II. Maybe even faster at some things. (Actually, before my 120GB SSD broke this spring, and I bought a new faster 450GB SSD, I even thought my laptop was faster.) Same with GPUs. I've had some great Geforce cards and one crappy, and only two Radeons (both Sapphire), but both great. But there have been crappy Radeons, sure. Before AMD bought them, I think they had only made one good card, "R9800"? Don't remember. Back when I purchased my last desktop graphics, 12 years ago, there was a lot of talk about that Nvidias drivers were better and Radeons more flakey. But that must have been inspired by previous generation, because Microsoft's statistics (by then they collected people's crash information) showed the complete opposite. And the HD6990 that I purchased has worked like a clock, for 12 years. It still runs reasonably modern games decently on 2560X1600 resolution. I haven't kept in touch, but I have had the impression that Nvidia has dominated in later years? But you know, things always change. Isn't it AMD that has made all the GPU chips for the last 2 generations of consoles? That might be a reason to go Radeon? I need to find out more about the individual cards, but there is also that the GPU might be just temporary, and be replaced after a couple of years, so no reason to spend too much.

I need to find out more about the individual cards, but there is also that the GPU might be just temporary, and be replaced after a couple of years, so no reason to spend too much. True enough its generation by generation and getting a crappy card from either manufacturer. In the past three generations Nvidia has held the gaming benchmark while in AI assisted programs AMD GPUS have the benefit. Since most buy GPU's for elite gaming Nvidia could hold a monopoly on GPUs and price accordingly. That and AMD till recently didn't really care much about their GPU department but since Ryzen they have come along way. For a more in depth backstory on 4000 series and its annoyance to some: Though to reiterate Gamers Nexus did solve the melting connectors. Nvidia drivers in my opinion have actually slid a bit these past few years -sometimes buggy but just getting more and more massive. While AMD drivers have become more streamlined and more stable and with sequel releases actually increasing performance. AMD has stated that they never intended to contend with Nvidia's 4090 but their top card was to only contend against the 4070/ti I believe. That however has aged badly -since some of the newer AMD GPU drivers actually are putting their 7900XTX into 4080 territory in realm of performance. That said for what your doing -I would need a lot more data on what your needing to designate which you should go. You software -some software function better with different GPU's and even CPU's. Do you need a lot of GPU memory or system memory or both?

I always try to make time But I have to sleep every now and then. Except this can put boards into to expensive of a price range It can, but I always go for the bang for the buck -boards. To complex of an procedure? Nah, that's not it. I like to do things on the hardware level.

Check out Fractal Design Define 7. There's one 5" bay and several 3" bays (two in the rack, but more can be added, up to six, I believe). That's the case I chose. M.2 is the bee's knees atm. Zalman was great; I've had several over the years. But fret not, Noctua is the new Zalman. metallic cooling paste is not used anymore? Why? It's still quite popular, in fact. It's just, that it doesn't go well with aluminium.

The second way is to do OS level underclocking -its hard to find depending on the OS but should give the same result and will NOT void warranty. Thanks, I'm trying this now! Set it to 99%. I also have the Core Temp app. The PC guy installed it. But I want to try the other method first so I don't have to run that app forever. Yesterday I had own of the system reboot black screen freezes again for the first time since I got it back from the shop. Which may or may not be serious overheating compared to the spike (?) overheating that only results on game crashes. I had the game crash twice too at 69C though. So there seems to be also something going on with the game not liking my PC. My card is definitely not overheating. 70C max. Who knows, maybe all these issues go away with a different game, no idea. My sample of two games doesn't tell me anything. FO4 doesn't overheat but it's an old game, so. I'll see what happens once I start playing Starfield. I'll report back on the undervolting workaround!

Who knows, maybe all these issues go away with a different game, I would recommend you use a benchmarking software, like 3DMark, in order to get a baseline first. That way you have something you can use as a comparison: 1. Download and install 3DMark Basic (it's free) 2. Run 3DMark 3. Make changes, what ever you like 4. Run 3DMark again This will also help you better understand, what kind of temperatures you can expect under extreme CPU and GPU loads.

OK. so to combat the rise of extortion type emails I have been getting to the email account that was linked to all my Gaming services and Newsletters, I have successfully created another and made damn sure it was totally verified and attached to such things as Steam, EA, Apple iTunes etc BEFORE deleting the old one. Then I just a moment ago slated my first email account for deletion because I was getting an obscene amount of extortion type emails. They were obviously false (and so what if they copied my email into their bogus lettter as "proof" of the hack) but still it was damned annoying, and just to take precautions if t was indeed true....I shoved my drumstick up their asses by deleting that older account and creating a new one.

Consoles have opted to go with AMD for CPU/APU (Arm-based architecture) and GPUs because they've been generally cheaper to produce and their architecture is better suited for the smaller size, less power-hungry, less 'needy' nature and complexity of Consoles (compared to even mainstream PCs let alone your high-end 4K Gaming PC). Not to mention that Nvidia has always come with a hefty price tag, so to keep the overall price of Consoles down to a somewhat reasonable limit (ie 400 to 600 CAD depending on Platform and Model) AMD products were selected over the Intel and/or Nvidia.
