I've seen characters who have less than 1,000 challenge points able to crush a Gold. Does that mean they spent a bunch of money and bought all the upgrades?
Besides leveling up your character to 20, how do you actually do more damage/increase your ability to take damage. Is it just by upgrading all your weapons and using equipment bonuses?

The library: bsn.boards.net/thread/3730/me3-mp-resource-libraryEspecially, the character build guides might help. But, to answer your question: no, you don't need (shouldn't) spend a dime of out of game money to improve. Just level up and concentrate on finding a build that suits your gameplay style and you'll be fine. Of course if you just have started, to get all the awesome parts to a perfect build can be a lot of grinding, because you need to get characters, weapons and especially gear bonuses through gaining/using in-game currency by playing A LOT.

Those guys with less than 1000 CP and able to crush Gold are probably playing on a second account. I soloed Gold with a two digit CP. At this point in time, you should not be spending real money on packs. When I first started out, I spent real money to buy packs in order to support Bioware MP DLCs. For the amount I spent, I got very little in return. Some characters are power-focused and can do well in Gold without fancy weapons and equipment e.g. Human Adept. Some Gold-level weapons like the Claymore are actually superior to many UR weapons. If you play in Gold lobbies, there are usually one or two old birds around to carry the game. That should get you enough dough to get some decent weapons.

I appreciate the responses. At this point I have around 12,000 CP and most of the characters/weapons unlocked. Obviously not all fully upgraded though. I can also thankfully say I have not spent a cent of real money on upgrading. That makes sense about the second account, I had wondered if that could be why they were so powerful yet their characters appeared so weak.
So for instance, increasing your CP and promoting your characters to increase your N7 level by themselves doesn't have any actual effect on increasing your ability to dole out damage/take a hit?

N7 level only indicates how many times the characters were reset through going to lvl 20 and 'advance' to level 0 again. It makes sense to level them up 10 times I think, to get the N7 banner. So your final score would be 1,920. CP level indicates only how many challenges has been done. If you diversify your style with different characters and weapons you will increase it ad infinitum. Both of them don't add anything to damage done/taken (there are no bonuses to that). You can only increase the damage using: better weapon mods, better consumables (warp ammo lvl IV instead of I for example), more powerful weapons (Paladin instead of Predator), better weapon lvl (X instead of I, when you unlock it, though I heard it doesn't add much), better bonuses from speccing you char correctly (look at Kalence site kalence.weebly.com/ ). And knowing the quirks of the game, like that using AP mod with AP ammo doesn't add up, or something (ask burningcherry ). That's about all I can think of. Oh, and try to get headshots.

CP doesn't stand for challenge points, it stands for cheese points. So the people you see with loads of CP are just scrubs who love to abuse play with OP characters and intended twerks

Scorpion?
That's a pretty weak gun or I'm too scrubby to use it properly.

Anything but bosses don't last long against it when you combine it with the right ammo type and powers like Concussive Shot, Proxi mine, grenades, etc. It offers a nice CC and as bonus is particularly effective against Phantoms. Adas and Falcon are already good at this, Scorpion is more effective.

Play characters who don't need good weapons to be effective. Most adepts and engineers are good out of the box, because of their comboing potential. When you can do a biotic/fire explosion every four seconds, you don't really need a good weapon. With that in mind...
When your manifest is up to date(that is, you have a decent amount of decently upgraded rares)... learn to reload cancel. If you think your vanilla asari adept was powerful with that Predator pistol, just you wait until you learn to reload cancel properly and set her up with Raider/Claymore. It's a special kind of magic and frankly, I still get a little turned on just by the thought of it.
You can thank me when you pick your jaw off the floor.

Besides leveling up your character to 20, how do you actually do more damage/increase your ability to take damage. Is it just by upgrading all your weapons and using equipment bonuses? Before I answer the quoted, to get stronger you must crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of the women. Only then will you know what is good in life, only then will you be ready.
Increasing damage is achieved by knowing the game mechanics. This was a wondrous place almost a decade ago, lots of science and math going on, as well as amazing cheaters that we reverse engineered along the way, losing these idols and false gods. We argued, we made nice, we watched "famous" bad players fail at duos together. The word "scrub" was coined in the hallowed and now leveled walls of the BioWare Social Network by a man who played on an xbox.
We learned. We remembered. We applied. This knowledge, in the hands of the untrained, is still enough to make a massive difference in your in-game results.
1) Learn about weapons with innate penetration VS guns that can use AP mods/ammo VS guns that cannot penetrate/benefit from AP mods - this alone will change your score, if you were not aware
2) Soft Cover is where you live, Right Hand Advantage is your position in soft cover. Your enemies will also use RHA, so be aware of that, but if you are positioned properly they cannot take advantage of it very often.
3) GI/Claymore

Most of the responses are from haters and trolls OP,the only true way to get stronger is to thunderdome someone while Heroicmass hosts/live streams on his hamster connection, the feedback you will get from fellow players will almost certainly improve you as a player 👍

Beginners: Salarian Infiltrator with Mantis. You learn to shoot properly and well, and get the rhythm of powers/guns well. Mooks: Cloak, energy drain, shoot. Bosses/armor: cloak, proxy mine, shoot.
Thats how I got experience with the game.
