The ‘First Look Trailer’ for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, was released today during Ubisoft Forward, showcasing game footage powered by the latest iteration of the Snowdrop engine. Releasing in 2022, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a first person, action-adventure experience developed by Massive Entertainment – a Ubisoft studio, in collaboration with Lightstorm Entertainment and Disney.

In this new, standalone, extension of the Avatar universe, you play as a Na’vi and embark on a journey across the Western Frontier, a never-before-seen part of Pandora. Explore a living and reactive world inhabited by unique creatures and new characters and push back the formidable RDA forces that threaten it. The game will be available exclusively on the new generation of consoles – PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, as well as Stadia, Amazon Luna, and Windows PC.

The trailer begins with a first-person look at seemingly familiar, lush, and beautiful jungle scenery, before we encounter a Na’vi and their banshee overlooking a magnificent vista with Pandora’s signature floating mountains in the background. We then see what are revealed as new forms of life and regions of Pandora, along with some known Avatar fauna including hexapedes and direhorses. Of course, it wouldn’t be Pandora without an incredible display of bioluminescence, as woodsprites float past dense, radiant flora under the pale light of the gas giant, Polyphemus.

The trailer also gives a glimpse of a Na’vi community upon an open plain, before revealing a large Resources Development Administration (RDA) facility with an extensive selection of military equipment at its disposal, including the Amplified Mobility Platform (AMP suit), as well as Samson and Scorpion gunships. Crazier that it's taken so long for the sequel(s) to come out...

Is this technically a movie tie-in game since the second Avatar film is also coming out in 2022 (unless it gets pushed back for the sixth time)?

That being said, the 2009 tie-in game was pretty alright and you got to pick your side:

My current mood about this reveal is "the world looks awesome and you get to play as a overgrown bipedal cat!" vs "meh, movie tie-in" (even if this is not a pure tie-in).

Ah well, the first Avatar movei was soso but the setting was interesting, so I am curious, what they'll make out of it, both with the new movies and this game.

Really surprised it's gonna be first person though. I'd have bet that it would be thrid person, especially if you play as one of the blue guys.

It might be worse since its being done by Massive and that could mean the same gameplay loop as Division 2.

In the end it will depend I think the most on the approach that will be taken with the game since Division 2 is a looter-shooter style game there really isn't any depth to the game which leaves a gameplay loop of just constantly grinding the same content for better gear.

Mmmm unsure about this but yeah it does look pretty. I have played some FP games but it does act as a deterrent to me, so will be a wait and see for me.

Sadly, there’s still no game updates but here’s some speculation:

Avatar 2 is expected to release December of this year and all the sequels are expected to all have December release dates. This means that Disney expects huge profits from the release and want Avatar to be another flagship series like Marvel. But here lies the problem, Avatar hype has been dead for more than a decade. So how do you revive some of the hype?

You release other Avatar media months in advance to recapture some of the hype. It makes sense since the game is expected to go drop between April and next March.

Therefore, I predict an Oct/Nov 22 release. Hopefully the EA showcase in July will confirm my prediction.

Well, I think it looks nice.

Premise is interesting: the player character isn’t an Avatar. They’re Na’avi children that were raised by the humans to work against their people. After the events of the first film, their human/Avatar teacher saved them from the human’s attempt to kill them (to hide the evidence of child abduction I guess? It isn’t clear) by putting them in cryo for fifteen years (bringing the timeline up to around the same time as the second film or a little before). Now they must reconnect with their heritage and defend their people from the humans.
