I think the DA2 sequence isn't really a trip to the Fade; it's just a projection into Feynriel's dream. Thus, it doesn't require the same resources to go there and Feynriel is the only one affected by dying in his dream. In other words, it's less Nightmare on Elm Street and more Fantastic Voyage. (Or Innerspace if you prefer a more recent version.) The same rules just don't apply.

Sorry but that makes even less sense because it means that Marethari is projecting us into his mind which only Dreamers themselves (or spirits/demons) are meant to be able to do, so is Marethari is secret Dreamer? Now if it had been explained that she'd done a deal with Justice and we were required to have Anders with us for it to work, that would make sense. I know that Anders was unaffected if you did go, because Justice was basically in control but I don't recall having to take him, even though invariably I always did.

Merethari mentions that she uses an elven ritual to send Hawke's party into the Fade. It is presumably more powerful yet less resource intensive than the ritual used by the Circle. That might have been the writers taking liberties so as to justify having your party with you. But given Marethari is familiar with somniari magic at all, we can probably assume she's using some lesser known elven ritual. The clan would probably keep this a closely guarded secret, but given the dangerous circumstances, she felt it necessary to make an exception. As to why Merrill doesn't become Tranquil when killed in the fade... but Feynriel does... I have no idea. Perhaps because it was Feynriel's dream and not Merrill's. Might it also have something to do with the fact Feynriel had become completely unaware of where he was. Maybe a mage has to believe it is real and that they are actually being killed. Perhaps that is also related to how ancient somniari could manage to assassinate people in their dreams. As to Qunari mages, that one is a puzzle. We know magic is even more suppressed in Qunari culture, so it may be a matter of them hiding this fact, and it being rare. Or it might have something to do with the Qunari race themselves, if they are indeed dragon blooded, or if they are drawing on another source for their magic instead of the fade.
