The entire thing is a a reference to what smilesja's posted: the Kobayashi Maru simulator training that not-yet-Captain Kirk hacked because it was designed to be impossible. I haven't tried it but from what I read: After doing the first wave, get out of the seat, go back to the simulation console at the entrance of the ship and hack it to give yourself buffs. I read there was even a keycard dropped under the other simulator you can use to give yourself access.
So, I did this today. The proctor actually gives you a hint about it if you ask him for any tips. He says Vanguards should always be ready to utilize any tools at their disposal. I had actually found the console before but only tried using it before starting. Once you've completed the first tier then it becomes active. You can give your ship more shields, better weapon damage, and an ally ship. Then there is a fourth option which requires hacking. This option makes all the previous buffs permanent instead of only lasting for a single tier. Although....I'm not sure that is how it actually worked. Anyway, I still couldn't defeat tier 5 even with the ally ship (which died immediately ) and the other buffs. But, that you use the debug console is mentioned in the review: Then it was off to Tau Ceti system but I stopped in Sirius first since it was on the way. No sign of any Zeniths (HFW reference), though maybe there were here?
Finished surveying Sirius (and the Pup) and then headed for Tau Ceti. Will survey the rest of the system before doing the mission on II.

I did honestly contemplate re-downloading the game but like Skyrim the thought of mucking around with the MODS which were finicky for Starfield put me off completely.

Finished the survey of Tau Ceti, then landed at the Tau Gourmet facility to "check on the settlers." Well, they were all dead but Hadrian Sanon was not. Helped her get the site's security and tracking systems back up and running, then took out a Terrormorph. Now, it might just be my imagination but, that thing seemed to be a lot bigger and faster than I remember it being on previous runs. Afterwards agreed to find her friend Dr. Walker, supposedly on Mars.
So, headed back to Sol system.
Started surveying on Mercury, where I found a transport mission but I didn't pick it up there because I wasn't sure how long I would be surveying. Plus, 940 credits is couch change at this point. Then I saw the same thing at Cydonia! I wonder if they inhaled too much red dust and forgot they were already there? On to Venus where these guys were still hanging out.... Then Earth and finally back to Mars. Will do the rest of the planets later.
Wandered Cydonia, found Mitch who wants a book; found Jane, who lost her ship and pilot; and found Renee who wanted some posters hung up around the city. Mike obliged and now he can decorate his own places with Space Frog whenever he wants. He might even put one on his ship, now that he can. In fact, he might even put one in his Guardian. That thing could use some personality.
Back to the business of looking for Dr. Walker....made some friends in The Sixth Circle and am now in the mines hunting Spacers. I have yet to take the option of paying the full debt or altering the amount due so the bartender will pay it, though doing either would save a bit of travel. Either way you have to take out the Spacers, and this method gets me the Aqueous Hematite recipe.

I feel dumb. This is my 7th? 8th? play-through and this is the first time I've seen this guy:
I thought maybe he was a new addition but nope, there are posts about him from launch.

Easy to miss and I used to avoid that place like the plague to not get the mining quest as it nearly always bugged for me.

Yup, he's been there from launch. I only bothered with him on my first character too, like most of that place actually...

I need to take Vasco to visit him.
More Sol system yesterday. Surveyed everything except Pluto/Charon but stopped at Titan to explore New Homestead. I will make it back to NA eventually, and maybe actually finish the Vanguard missions this time. Not sure if its coincidence or what, but I've come across a whoooolllotta heatleeches and their nests. Man those things are creepy! Mike doesn't know what they are yet, but I do!

How come you never finished the Vanguard mission? Genuinely intrigued as it is one of my favourites and is relevant to the whole back story of the game and pretty much the only one I do every time. Plus good NPC's and missions and perks. If the game wasn't so big file size wise I'd download it just to play that mission every now and then.

Met Hadrian at the Cabinet, went to the meeting, then the attack happened. The Terrormorphs looked a bit different, had some blue and red knobby things on them. The first one with the mental mojo was tough - changed guns 3 times and finally used Grav Field on it, but the other 2 were easy to put down. Grav Field worked like ME1 Lift, making it possibly my new favorite superpower.
Then went ambassador hunting. Persuaded the FC lady on the first attempt and then found the Va'ruun guy. Took Andreja and that was interesting, seeing her in her own element, sort of. I also managed to read his personal files, which I hadn't done before. I thought it was interesting that he theorized the reason the staff was recalled was because of a change in leadership/direction back home.
So, got the archive data, was made a citizen, and then got to meet the guy in the basement. Did his errand (remembered to install EM on my ship first; accidentally destroyed the ship the first time - oops!) and got pointed to Kaiser's location. Found Kaiser, helped him eliminate Unit 99 (and a few mercs) then went back to Mars to catch up with Hadrian and Percival.
Next stop: Londinion
On the plus side, going there will also allow me to survey the Toliman system.

Londinion isn't too stressful, you should get the opportunity to pick up some good gear and weapons beforehand. I am sure you will but be thorough in the final office where you listen to the recording there are one or two easy things to miss there.

Finished the Vanguard quest, told Hadrian about basement guy before the final meeting, chose Aceles again, and got a shiny new penthouse to not live in. Did some decorating - there are more picture options now, among other things. I put up a couple of display cases so need to bring back stuff to put in them.
Picked up another ship while surveying the Toliman system, this one a Va'Ruun Revelation II. It's nice and roomy but has only about 1/3 the cargo space of my Second Shot (the former Claymore) plus fewer crew slots. I swapped it out after returning to NA. I find it very amusing that Va'Ruun Zealots have galactic cat plushies on their beds.
Visited a few more shops in the city, did another job for Sgt. Yumi, and picked up a real Vanguard assignment from Tuala. Took out the baddie ships then headed to Procyon system to eventually find the first temple. Plan to survey the system first. Took out more ships there, at both III and I. Added Hadrian to my crew, but the first sample collection for Percival is way out in the Zelazny system which is about 3 jumps away at this point. She'll be tagging along for a while.
Andreja is ready to start her personal mission but since it's in Freestar space it will be a while before I get to it. I will also need to add Sam in at some point, so I either need more crew slots (ship has 7 and my command skill is 6, plus the extra slot from Sarah) or will have to dump someone.
Currently on the ship:
Andreja Barrett Sarah Vasco Moara Andromeda Hadrian
Lin and Heller are Outposting on Andraphon.

Sooo it's been a while since I've last posted here but I recently came back to playing the game after the big update. I must say that the 60 fps update is amazing, animations are more fluid now and while I do have the occasional lag spike, it's nothing compared to the quality that it brings! Also, I just love the game options and how you can tailor make it to how you play. Stinks that it comes at a cost of lower XP if you decide to do things like increase how much you can carry and how much money vendors have, but on the flip side, if you want a hardcore gameplay, you'll have a large boost in XP which is a good reward to have and it the options stack meaning that you can level up fast or slow depending on what you want. It's something Bethesda hasn't done before and I have to admit, they've exceeded my expectations with this one. As for my adventures across the cosmos, I've done some whacky things with my partner: Andreja seeing the planets, doing quests, getting a new ship. It was a fun journey...... until I reached a certain point in the main quest. As soon as I find a way to add screenshots here, I'll elaborate on what happened.

Stinks that it comes at a cost of lower XP if you decide to do things like increase how much you can carry and how much money vendors have I'm gaming the system, keeping the settings to +10% XP as much as I can, then when I need more carry capacity bump that up but I'm still at +4%. Then when I get somewhere to sell stuff, change them again so vendors have more money while I'm not doing activities that generate XP. It's a bit of micromanaging, sure, but it means I can pick up all the loot I want and then sell it all at once when back in civilization, or even at an outpost with a shop. The 'greatly increase' credits option gives vendors 5x their normal amount so anyone with a normal 5K now has 25K to buy with. In a place like NA with multiple shops, you can rake in the cash. I've barely touched the main story, just finished the Vanguard mission, and already have 900K+ credits. That's after spending all but my last 5K or so to buy a Shieldbreaker ship very early in the game. Much like in HFW, I love not having to worry about inventory and being able to just play.

OMG, I did the Sabotage mission all wrong when I did my Ryujin run. You don't need to stealth outside like a little bit and event here it might be possible to not do that part stealth either.

More pics
I'm wondering if the Hunter will only talk to you if you revealed being Starborn to the group? He finally appeared at the Viewport but still no talky.
Finally saw this guy again - it's been a while. Unfortunately, one of the stories in this quest is the pirate collector with an artifact, and I don't plan on doing that this time, so the SSNN quest won't complete. Saw this poster on the starstation for Andreja's mission. It's a UC station so I'm assuming the city is supposed to be New Atlantis but...it kinda looks like a temple. Speaking of temples....2 of the 3 I've been to so far.
I kinda goofed in my mission order. I forgot that activating Andreja's quest meant I couldn't change companions so that put the kibash on taking Barrett to temple no. 2. Then I had grabbed Sam back at the Lodge to finally go find his artifact but had to leave him standing at the Akila spaceport in order to do Andreja's mission first. So, finished that, Mike shot Tomisar - sorrynotsorry - and now I'm back in Akila City to do Sam's quest. Actually, outside the walls hoping the ashta didn't get 'em. Honestly, after facing down Terrormorphs en masse on Toliman II, ashta are about as scary as kittens.

So I finally finished the main quest and I gotta say of all the stories Bethesda has done, Starfield is easily the most unique of them all. I'll gather my thoughts tomorrow but I was blown away at the end. Hopefully I can gather my screenshots lol.

But, that you use the debug console is mentioned in the review: It's my second "playthrough" but I managed to did it on the first try. Thanks to all the starship and piloting skills that got carried over with the NG+ and I didn't even need to hack the simulator. The sixth wave was brutal. I had to boost around the enemies trying to minimize the damage taken while trying to kill them as quickly as I could.

Made it out to Zelazny system for the first apex predator samples. Took Hadrian with me and made sure to equip her with an EM weapon. I am mad at Sam because he killed an Aceles. We came upon one going against a Terrormorph; I took out the Morph and then he kept firing at the big guy. Farther up the ravine a second one was dead, I assume killed by the Terrormorph. So now he's benched. Next time I take him out he's getting the EM weapon treatment too.
Finished surveying Zelazny with Barrett, then went to Alchiba and swapped him out for Andreja. Finished up there and am now at al Battani, I think? I'm in no hurry to continue the main quest so I told Walter his excursion to Neon would have to wait.

Barrett and Sarah were the worst IMO, I remember one planet with these sort of cute flying bat things and I am like oh look how nice they are and Barrett just goes all exterminator on them.

Still surveying al-Battani system. Came upon a Spacer Hyena II ship on the ground and boarded it for a takeover. They immediately took off. This ship is a big one but not as much cargo room as I'd expect for Spacers who literally drive their home around space. Killed the crew and claimed the ship, then decided I wanted to remodel it (and add cargo space) without going back to civilization. So, new outpost!
Couldn't build one on the planet I was on (extreme conditions) so went back to a moon already surveyed and plopped down helium and iron extractors, storage units, an inter-system cargo link, and finally the landing pad with shipbuilder. I upgraded one set of engines, the grav drive, swapped the EM weapon for long range missiles (the other 2 weapons are auto-fire turrets), and added 2 giant cargo boxes to the underbelly, replacing some decorative metal work. Renamed it Space Barge and painted it purple and black.
So far so good. Weird thing though when I got back on the ship - there were 3 security personnel just hanging out, and I'm pretty sure they don't work for me. No idea where they came from or what they're doing there.

Pics of the security folks on the ship, though I think after I did some more tinkering they disappeared....
I turned on the setting for sustenance to give myself a reason to consume all the regular food I'm lugging around. There are some pretty good benefits from it but once the effects wear off, all the benefit values turn negative until you eat/drink again. Still, my XP bonus is now up to 20% which makes leveling at this stage not as much of a chore.
Still surveying. Flew to Heinlein system for an activity mission. This is where the Lucky Lu is stranded but I'm on the fence about bringing whatshername on board. I upped my Ship Command to max level finally but still only have space for 7 on the ship so I don't think there would be room for her anyway.

Has anyone talked about the starship shield bug and the targeting lock time bug? I just realized that I somehow got the bug on my more recent game saves. My ship's shield value was decreased by about 5% and the targeting lock time was also significantly increased. To fix these bugs I had to use a couple console commands to restore the original values. Because I was still missing a couple achievements, I decided to use SFSE and Baka Achievement Enabler. For more info, you should check out this Reddit Post. I honestly thought the latest patch would address these potential game breaking bugs.

Speaking of bugs, the random security crew is still hanging around my ship. They don't appear to be taking up passenger slots so I guess they can stay. I made some more changes - dumped the 3x2 cargo hab for 3 - 1x2's instead, one of which added an 8th crew slot. I accidentally installed an empty living qtrs but it worked out since I put a nav console and industrial workbench there. I love being able to decorate the ship! Some other weirdness...every now and again I hear one of the crew yelling as if they are being attacked. Maybe the security crew are pirates in disguise?
Still surveying. I've changed followers to start building up their friend level. Barrett has his contact digging up dirt on Hephaestus so 1 or 2 more talks and I can do his quest. While that simmers I've resolved to take Sarah for a bit to get her level up. Just had the first convo with her, about the artifact, so still a ways to go there. Sam is going to have to wait until I decide whether to do the Ranger quest-line or not. I like being a full Ranger when you go to Neon to get info on what Lillian's mission is, and the guy there is much less of a jerk if he already knows the PC and they are a full Ranger. I think his will trigger after the next convo so he's on the bench for now. Besides, I can't go to Neon without Walter tagging along for the next artifact. Soooo many quests trigger there though, and my to do list is already long.
I kinda feel like going off-grid once I finish the other companion quests. Then I can do SysDef and Ryujin without being judged every 5 seconds.
