Redoing my list now that I’ve finished the game.
Emmerich: Moving him to the top of my list because I thought he had the best companion quests. Bell Tolls was also one of my favorite companion abilities. He became part of my core team.
Davrin: The other member of my core team with his great taunt ability. I liked the Griffin questline and Assan. Davrin needed a bit more personality outside Assan, though.
Lucanis: Previously my favorite, he dropped after the city choice. His voice actor did a great job, but unfortunately Bioware decided to drop his main Spite quest if you don’t pick his city. It left his questline feeling broken and unfinished. He was less boring than some of the others, though.
Neve: Okay but a bit boring. Didn’t make much of an impression on me.
Harding: Okay but a bit boring. Didn’t make much of an impression on me.
Taash: Final companion quest was too long. Overall quests could have been better written. Lords of Fortune faction seemed like it didn’t have much purpose. Taash had some good scenes in Act 3, and I liked the philosophy of not always killing dragons.
Bellara: I wish I didn’t have to recruit her. She talked like she was in a tv show for preschoolers. Didn’t fit with the game at all. Also didn’t like how tech-oriented she was as a mage in a fantasy game.

This is fun! It's hard for me to rank so I have a tier list instead.
Loved: Davrin, Emmrich. They are highlights of the game for me. Emmrich is the most interesting and enjoyable. Davrin is the hottest.
Liked: Bellara, Neve. Both of them surprised me. It's quite difficult to appreciate them at first but the more I spent time with them, the more they become more interesting and deep.
Ok/fine: Lucanis, Harding. Their stories and personalities do not interest me much, and I've expected more of them. Still there are moments that make them shine.
Meh: Taash. Their story did not resonate well with me, and their personality can be grating at times. I don't hate them though.

Roger that. I'll restrict it to my most offensive opinions, as to waste your time as little as possible.
Harding (This is a personal one from experience. I feel a bit bad dishing it out to poor Lace)
They tweaked her personality in a bad way since DAI. It's not entirely fair to assume since we get to know her only very superficially. But just from my personal impression, her charm stemmed from being fiercely positive despite the dirt in her hair, yet it all seemed to come from a place of method, not naivitee. So while I greatly enjoy the new "ancestral" portion of her arc -and genuinely all the vulnerability it involved- I do not enjoy the "I care too much about others and not enough about myself" tweak to her brand of "positive person" character.
Now this triggers me, because I believe this is one of the most toxic and destructive traits my society loves to breed - and worse, we only get to respond with the usual unhelpful counterparts: 1) "yes, it is because you're too much of an awesome martyr, please keep putting too much pressure onto yourself while we cheer on this harmful image you became addicted to" 2) "your feeling bad proves that kindness is really futile" and of course, by far the best and most alluring thing someone with a western background can possibly hear
3) "you need to take some time for you! ie - after accumulating X units of selfless deeds, your peers hereby grant you Y units of not-frowned-upon selfishness"
The simple takeaway is this: there IS such a thing as selfishness inside selflessness. The difference is awareness and honesty. If you know that you are compulsively helping others primarily because this helps you enjoy life as who you like being (= someone who helps) and because you genuinely enjoy the effects of your actions (by outspoken gratitude or observing positive change), you can accept that, and the transaction is just. It is also very hard to feel exploited or drained.
We preach that doing something for yourself is always worse than doing something for others, to the point where we will go to absurd lengths of self deception regarding our motivation. We continue to place unwanted power -and more importantly, responsibility- into the hands of anyone who comes along, while we more or less unknowingly advertise our own suffering to the audience - who in turn are conditioned to value this behaviour. (Someone who suffers due to service for others can never be wrong) This is how we cultivate a culture of self-harm, eventually dishonesty or even actual harm - as it so often ends up blowing up in both involved faces - seemingly out of nowhere. From there, rinse and repeat 1) - 3)
I have more love for BioWare's whole inclusiveness, raising awareness shtick than most, but they are working "full speed ahead, looking backwards all the time" here, and that was rather disappointing for me.
Davrin To be perfectly honest, he's a pretty boring archetype with so many awesome features that it kind of makes up for it. Don't wanna get into this (again) but he's also a black man, in a fantasy setting, with awesome character design and we're not getting many of those. I call him Silly McPerfectman because he's impossibly handsome, with a voice like Barry White at half the age and only the "cool" personality flaws. As some MAY have realized from my 9435 posts on the matter, I'm randomly headcanoning as warden Bethany Hawke and that's why he works, because he's exactly the hero husband the woman deserves after two decades of crap.
Tash I don't get it. She's the poster girl They're the poster person for bad writing, woke agenda yadda yadda, and the more I interact with her them the more I like her them. The segway INTO her their arc is admittedly hamfisted imo (that level of rapport she they magically has with Neve is my actual problem, but it's impossible to predict which companions you bring along how frequently I guess) but the more it plays out the better it gets. All these scenes with her their mother are so well written and acted out, and as a sucker for family plots of any kind, I criticsise this quite mercilessly. I figure if you're furthermore someone who has this issue in their lives, it must feel very liberating. I can however totally see the conflict of the parent who does not react in the way the child would've wanted to see, and already kind of regrets it, but isn't quite there yet. There is a level of nuance there I really admire.
At the risk that many are going to laugh out loud, the themes explored in this game are so mature, truly mature, that they seem elusively boring to anyone uninitiated to some of life's mercilessly unspectacular cruelties. Those you properly evaluate looking back. All of them a far cry from "I am secretly the chosen king", "is blood magic bad" or "I like to murder people a lot because I'm evil"
Also her their dialogue in any group setting is a welcome and very necessary thunderclap cutting through the often lofty tone. I'm like yeah, you drag us right back in the simple dirt with your unimpressed teenage snot.
Edit: wow, I really do suck at this them this.

A place for discussing the overall and relative quality of our cast of companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Which was better written? Which did you just like more? Who do you hate? All reasons are valid Remember to spoiler tag details about the companion quests. To kick things off: I don’t have individual rankings but I divide them into three groups. (Great): Emmerich, Davrin (Good): Bellara, Harding (Mediocre to Poor): Neve, Lucanis, Taash The first two all were easy for me to connect with. Emmerich is very charming and his attitude toward spirits and the undead (especially Manfred) genuinely interesting. His quest was a wild ride with a solid character arc for him. Davrin similarly had interesting struggles with raising Assan, though the advice my Rook had to give was sort of hokey to questionable. It did get a little repetitive, but he’s well acted and Assan is cute, so… I liked all the ties back to Last Flight in his questline. Harding is adorable and her companion storyline is an interesting follow up to DAI content, but I feel like she doesn’t get enough conversations even in the romance to explore her feelings or her background. Pretty happy with her, but needed more to make her great. I was expecting to find Bellara annoying, but she surprised me and I enjoyed her story. I don’t feel like I learned much about her outside that story though, and I don’t love the general “magitech” technobabble approach to magic that she brings with her. Less rambling about “resonance dampeners” and more answering riddles from talking oak trees please. Neve is an archetypical jaded private detective that largely fails to distinguish herself within that archetype. She doesn’t really open up enough to be interesting (didn’t romance her) and her personal quest can be filed under Just another evil blood mage plot Lucanis is weird. In every conversation I had with him, I didn’t feel like I was getting much more insight into his character than I had when I first met him. He doesn’t elaborate much about his past. And the man keeps talking about coffee, which I’m sure was meant to be an endearing quirk, but it didn’t land with me. Fun quest, but this character left me cold. Somehow they managed to make the assassin abomination dull as dishwater. Taash acts like a sulky teenager and I have never had my interest in a character turn to dread so fast (I had been considering the badass Qunari dragon hunter as a romance interest before I actually met them…). Maybe it’s just a sign that I’m getting older, but I really didn’t want to deal with this sort of angst. Davrin is one of my favorites - I have a pet soooooo - and I liked his general personality and mood. He is self-sacrificing to a fault I think and I hate it, but it fits him as a hardened Grey Warden so well. I've always liked Bellara as a character and was happy to see her really blossom later on in her personal quest. Since I come from ethnoreligious cultures too I completely understood how she could be so casual about the Evanuris one moment and then trying to grapple with the ramifications of that history later. It's confusing to some people; to us, it's a Monday. Harding sorta feels like a downgrade at times personality-wise -as do most of the returning characters - because it's very clear aspects of her have been changed to fit the narrative. I actually like Neve - some find her line deliveries odd but I think it's just supposed to be an aspect of her character since she's obviously seen a lot so I don't fault her so much as her writers. I like and dislike how aspects of Taash's character were handled as it really squandered a lot of interesting lore DA had developed re: Qunari which only made certain scenes that later showed up where that information was randomly included more confusing. Overall I like their personality otherwise, the tensions they have with their mother Shathann -which has some depth that the writers also wasted. Being likable or a "mature" person isn't a requirement for me when I think about characters and some of the ways they respond and speak belie their insecurities about themselves, which makes them feel authentic. People aren't always consistent. I like that about Taash. Emmerich is a bit offputting for me, in that he feels like he'd fit the Addams Family mythos better personality-wise. I'm a bit biased toward his faction, especially given I have always been fascinated by the Mournwatch - I roleplayed my previous Inky as one long before we heard about the factions- and (spoiler: companion quest) actually becoming a Lich being a core part of their profession is metal af. I just wish I could see more of the gritty aspects of it. I remember meeting the trainer in Inquisition, listening to Cole's commentary on how Necromancers actually affect spirits with their magic- or hearing Cassandra's stories about her relative being obsessed. Lucanis really just has his accent going for him. His status as an abomination has none of the bite or depth Anders and Justice had imo. I still think of an old convo I'd had on this forum about the differences in approach a certain oft-compared game took with one of its characters and not really expecting Bioware to be able to because of how their narratives and gameplay is structured and someone actually trying to argue that BW could... their comment didn't age well. And then there's Varric, who's unsurprisingly lackluster for obvious reasons. Worst plot armor in the story and kind of a travesty that Bioware didn't commit to what they were doing so the twist would feel authentic and not so obvious.

It's quite difficult for me to make a ranking. None of the characters really stood out to me in a huge way. Some companions also had better vibes, but had boring personal quests, and vice versa. On balance I'd rate them the following -
1) Bellara. Which surprised me. I didn't like her at first, but her personal quest line with the old god was my favourite. The voice actress grew into her role well. I did like Sera, and even Pee Bee as well, so perhaps I like the 'quirky' archetype lol
2) Neve. This was a tricky one because I found her quest to be the most dull. A standard blood mage quest that the average quest in DA2 did better
3) Davrin. Meh. A solid character with a solid quest line. Nothing special
4) I liked to bring Taash on quests. Nice lore reveal at the end of the questline.
4) Emmerich. I see he gets a relatively large amount of love. I didn't like how his character seems to recon the Nevarran accent. His character design, and theme music also a felt too Disney. For that reason I never really jived with him. Solid quest line though, and crap villain.
5) Harding. My LI. Meh. Last quest of hers was quite beautiful though.
6) Lucanis. Meh. His quest contained the best boss battle in the game

Neve and Darvin are normal people, mature, reliable colleagues, not particularly interesting but not annoying either; and they are the best this game has to offer. 7,5
Bellara is the usual stereotype of the emotionally incontinent nerd genius, full of annoying quips and nothing else. 4,5
Taash "doesn't fit": she is a problematic teenager from 2024 copy-pasted into Thedas without refinement, completely out of place in the lore and a living insult to the Qun, but aside from that, he’s well-written. He's the only character with some spice, a soul, something meaningful to say that’s deeper than a puddle, a true conflict. 7
Lucanis ... I mean, Lucanis doesn’t even exist; he has the emotional and intellectual complexity of a teaspoon. To be clear, as a Crow (a killing machine), it makes sense for him to be completely depersonalized, a robot that shows sparkles of life only when coffee in involved... but I mean, no. 3
Emmerich is also rather bland, but unlike Lucanis, the stereotypical "refined intellectual with Victorian English aplomb passionate about the occult" is at least adequately portrayed. Not that he has much to say either, mind you, but he is not unpleasant to have around. 6
Harding is similar to Bellara, a bit less quirky but more whiny, and like her, besides expressing banal feelings and superficial thoughts about life, she doesn’t do much. 4,5
Overall, Bellara and Harding are the worst because their relationship with Rook boils down to therapy sessions where they unload their mental insecurities on him, and he says, "It's all okay, believe in yourself, whatever" and walks away.
