I think the real reason they cancelled the beta is because of money. Rather then let people try it for free right now, people will have to pay $5 for EA access to try it early, if they had the beta there wouldn't be as much interest to try it.

Considering they haven't released a lick of gameplay footage without tagging it as "YO THAT'S PRE-ALPHA. I KNOW WE'RE TWO WEEKS AWAY BUT EVERYTHING YOU'VE SEEN IS PRE ALPHA TOTALLY. AND ITS CHOPPY BECAUSE WE CUT TONS OF STUFF OUT. WE DEFINITELY FIXED ALL THE BUGS AND ISSUES AND WEIRD SHIT. TRUST US." The game might not be in very good shape.
1) pre-alpha is when your game is just a fucking wire frame.
2) how about showing us this polished up footage? Some extended, unedited, unaltered section of the game for like 15-20 minutes.

We have no real idea how many people would have invited into the beta, had it run. BioWare don't have a track record of running betas with huge numbers of people. As for paying $5 for EA Access, people don't have to do anything, these are choices, and partly platform limited. |

I already have EA Access. The annual cost is on $30 and I have played plenty of games for that investment. It is well for it for a mere $2.50/month when purchased annually.

Though that's not a beta, that's gold, that's finished. There was going to be a technical test, but they must have: a) felt the January technical test went well (I know folk who did it and they 'smiled'...)  they just ran out of time to fit it in after bug squashing. Any technical issues would be pointed out from the Access players too, so maybe they figured that would be enough as well. |

At this point I wouldn't call it surprising that they aren't doing a multiplayer beta. With the early access opening up in 2 weeks if they haven't started the beta by now, they weren't going to get around to it before early access kicks in which includes multiplayer.
While it sucks that we wont be able to try the game completely free of charge, those of us with Origin/EA Access will be able to play the game on the 16th even if we haven't purchased it which should give us some decent information.
I myself expect I'll have a pretty in-depth analysis of everything I go through in those 10 hours, especially of everything related to the mechanics of the game.
The biggest downside to not running an earlier test is that if they do discover something wrong with the early access people, they wont have much time to scrap together a fix for it if they hope to have it fixed by launch.

I thought they said they wanted the day 1 patch to be available for the early access crowd on the 16th. If that's true then that would leave them no time whatsoever once all the issues and exploits are invariably found. Last I heard, patches take a good fortnight to pass MS certification. |

Lets hope they fix it at release and through some early patching. Fro DAI, iirc, it actually took about 4 or even 5 months to fix the camera. Otherwise, you had to either play with a controller or hold RMB all the time every time. I broke a mouse over that bs. |
