The first trailer for Luc Besson's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets was revealed yesterday. The film is an adaptation of the classic sci-fi comic book series Valérian and Laureline, created by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières in the 1970's.
Valérian and Laureline was a major source of inspiration to George Lucas and its influence is strikingly visible in the original Star Wars trilogy, from the design of the Millenium Falcon to the metal bikini worn by Leia in Return of the Jedi. It's well known that Mézières, the series designer, wasn't particularly happy with that. He even made a drawing with Leia and Luke sharing a table with the french heroes, in a bar crowded with all manner of aliens, exposing the similarities between the two series.
There's a very good article in the blog Kitbashed that tells the story of how Christin and Mézières met, and the many ways in which their work served as an inspiration to Lucas, and many other artists afterwards. Undoubtedly, you can find traces of some conceptual ideas in Mass Effect as well.
Mass Effect fans, and sci-fi fans in general, should probably keep an eye on this film. It's hard to know if it's going to be any good, as the director of The Fifht Element has had a very irregular career lately. There are obvious differences between what can be seen in the trailer of Valerian and the original comic books. Mostly, the actors seem to be less adult, possibly as the film is trying to target a younger audience.
Still, this seems to be a passion project for Luc Besson, and it's backed by a huge french production. It's set to be released on July 2017. For now, we can only wait and hope the film turns out to be worthy of its huge heritage.
