The first only m/m romance in BioWare History. Dorian got more attention for it of course, but what can you do? I really loved his main game content (though maybe a bit heavy on crying over the dead husband). His Citadel content was good mostly too. (maybe not so much with the James Vega threesome date...)
I really wish he would have been in the earlier games, since it feels like I was just getting to really know him before the game was just over and done.

I'm rather fond of Steve. In my opinion, he's the nicest person in the entire trilogy. He always has something nice to say, even during moments he could easily make fun of you. He keeps reminding Shepard to take care and he worries about them when they're out on missions. Regardless of gender. Regardless of romance. Not to even mention that he always gets everybody's asses out of danger safely. The only point I'll never agree with him is the Hammerhead being better than the Mako. The Mako helped me beat the Reapers in 2183, Steve!

I like Steve but still stuck on Kaidan where romance is concerned.
I read some Mass Effect fanfic and I've noticed a propensity to have Steve and James end up together. It's something I guess I don't really understand. I have plenty of straight guy friends who flirt with me and it's absolutely meaningless. It's all in fun and that's how I've seen it with James. Do any of you see something more to the Steve/James friendship in ME3 that maybe I'm missing?

Love BroShep/Cortez and love the chemistry they have for each other. Cortez should have existed in the game from the start.
Thankfully, this site didn't auto-censor Matthew Del Negro's name like the old BSN.

The Mako helped me beat the Reapers in 2183, Steve! I'm ashamed to say that I ignored him in the first part of the game, and didn't make it down to the shuttle bay until almost halfway through the game. When I started noticing just how nice he was, I thought I'd better pay him a visit, and realised that there were two crew members hanging out in the shuttle bay (yeah, James got really mouthy with me). I really like Steve for the reasons you mentioned and I'll make more of an effort with him in my next playthrough. And the Mako... Nooooooo. I'd mod the Mako out of existence if I could.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a die hard Kaidan lover. But for romance, I thought Cortez was waaay more emotionally intimate. I finally romanced him this last play through and he seriously made me melt more than a few times. I found I kept asking myself why it had taken me so long to do this. Compared to Cortez, Kaidan's m/m romance felt much more shallow. To me, anyway.

It's hard for me to pick between Steve and Kaidan. I feel like they both have very good storylines. I do feel like Steve's dead spouse trope makes the beginning a bit harder to take then Kaidan's story. However the same could be said it's hard to take the fact that Kaidan talks about how attractive women are quite a few times during the series-making him seem more player sexual then actually bisexual.
I do at the end of the day give the win to Kaidan, and I am not even sure why. Maybe it's just as simple as the fact that I can take him with me on missions and he gets that one extra scene (the beam run) that Cortez doesn't. Either way though both romances are quite nice!

I plan to do his romance soon (only 2 more Sheps in the way, haha) and I really look forward to it, especially to see how it feels compared to Kaidan's You'll definitely enjoy it! It does start off a little awkward, with the scenes of him remembering his dead husband, but once you get past that part it picks up in a major way. Maybe for me Kaidan's m/m romance felt shallow because I primarily play femShep. Having romanced him as a female, the scenes felt toned down and a bit strange getting repeated for mShep. Even the tone in some of the scenes would go from hot and ready to stiff and then back. Most notably, I would say the pre-Chronos Station night. The you were always so focused line doesn't feel like it fits at all with the rest of the conversation - which is pretty much the exact conversation he has with femShep. That line throws the whole thing off, though, as if making it work for mShep was an after thought so it didn't come together quite as well as if they'd been making it a full on romance from 'Go'. Steve's romance scenes came across as much more emotionally involved to me. He was always looking out for you, seeing how you were doing. I really love his response in Leviathan if the romance is active. Don't ever do that again. Sir.

Not very nice if for someone you love. Kaidan, I assumed, was something along the lines of pansexual, which is how I play my Shepard. The attraction is more to the person than the body. So Kaidan can appreciate the female form (he notices EDI, for example) but he's never going to have an interest in dating her - no personality meshing. With Shepard it's different. He'll be attracted to who Shepard is as a human being. The rest follows. And the Apollo's conversation definitely suggests Kaidan is interested in sex with Shepard regardless of gender.

I definitely will let my Shepard live happily ever after with Steve, because there's only so much tragedy I can enjoy, and my Shepard will be an unlucky guy before as well They really deserve some happiness. I also played my Shepard similar to yours with Kaidan. I really enjoyed it a lot.

That ending choice makes me almost not want to complete mass Effect 3. Sometimes I think "maybe I should just stop after Citadel". No matter which choice I pick someone my Shepard cares about suffers terribly. I agree though, destroy seems like the best option if you don't want to completely ruin Steve for life.

Steve Cortez and Samantha Traynor, for me (and I am not saying this as someone who is biased towards the Alliance over Cerberus) were miles ahead better crewmates than Kelly Chambers and the non-existant (I never bothered talking to them in my playthroughs) Ken and Gabby.
Cortez and Traynor both proved their worth over the course of ME3, Leviathan (sadly no Traynor) and Citadel. They only appeared in the final game and DLC, but come the end, they felt so integral and important to the Normandy crew, it really felt like they had been there from the beginning.
They have their own arcs, characters, and stories, important and necessary skills to the Normandy (unlike Kelly, who would always tell me I have mail, right after i read the frigging mail, which never happened with Traynor) and are honestly well rounded and extremely likable characters.
I also loved the relationship between EDI and Traynor. Like I loved how they bonded, since I suppose if you really think about it, EDI, Cortez and Traynor combined have helped save Shepard and crew's asses more times than I can count when you compare it to the squadmates lol

Cortez thread needs more love! He's such an awesome character, so caring and genuine. It's kinda surprising how quickly he felt like my new bff in 3. It didn't feel rushed considering the time he's introduced into the series; he just naturally fit in for me, like he always should've been there. Such a shame. (Would've been interesting to see him (and Traynor) brought in as new characters in ME2 at least.) And his romance. The "dead husband" thing can seem daunting at first, but I feel that Cortez is very much an individual and not just personifying his tragedy. His platonic friendship was something special, then I played his romance and it's so sweet and touching... made me love him even more. Might not have as much content as others, but all those little moments are worthwhile imo (helps to have all the dlc, too). Even though those small doses of fluff make me yearn for more. I love the feels between Steve and Shepard in friendship and romance. I adore my shuttle pilot to bits.

I don't think the dead spouse trope was a factor. Thane have one (the fact that he kept remembering sex with his dead wife doesn't seem to bother many of his fans) and he have a son as well. I think there will be more Cortez fans if he was a facescanned character. perhaps if someone modded Kaidan's sex scene with their romance maybe.

I always thought Cortez was super hot actually. I wouldn't change his Appearance if I had any pull on such things (clearly I don't though lol). The only thing I would change about his content was maybe not have quite so much Vega during his time at the apartment. I hate sports anyway....

Well, I think there are probably quite a bit of players that are/were put-off by the literal "crying over his dead husband" -- especially considering he's the first gay male romance in the series. Maybe the only one available if Kaidan isn't around. He's also a new character and not a squadmate which can make the romance seem less significant in comparison to others who have a history with Shep and can go on missions, like Kaidan. I like Thane, and his romance, too, but there are still those that would rather avoid "replacing" his dead wife. A difference for Thane is that his wife died many years ago, when Kolyat was a child (and he doesn't ever specifically or repeatedly talk about sex with his wife, actually). I feel that Thane is living more in long-standing regret than immediate depression. Cortez lost his husband only 6 months prior and is still obviously grieving. They both have baggage (what character doesn't? ), but Cortez's is still kinda raw and Shepard, as usual, has to help him work through it before they can get together. I can see how that's awkward. I did think it was awkward at first, but it's not so difficult for me to get past. So I wouldn't change Cortez's appearance either, and I'm not concerned with sex scenes in games (though I do believe that equal content for LIs is ideal). I'd have preferred an actual conversation before Cronos Station like with Kaidan/Liara, rather than "Hey there, lets pass the time together" and then fade-to-back...

When a memory feels as real as life, it's as valid as life. This is how Thane remember Irikah, she is alive in his mind. He avenged her death and spend years trying to atone his sins. He's already resigned to his impending death and he believe that she is waiting for him in afterlife. His story is a romance tragedy, regardless if he fall in love with FemShep. Naturally, I received a lot of backlash from Thanemancers just by saying stuff like this..
Cortez don't have this complication. His late-husband wanted Cortez to let him go and begged him to not make him into an anchor. Shepard merely help Cortez with his grieve and supporting him in difficult times before he was able to open up to love again. Which is very emotionally-heavy hence why its not everyone's cup of tea but I'm kinda surprised how this is a major turn off to a lot of gaymers.
