I suppose. Thane says when Irikah died he returned to his “battle sleep” and focused on avenging her death -- I get the sense that he didn't feel or think about more than simply that and by the time he looked up so much time had passed and Kolyat was already grown. He dealt with his grief in the only way he knew how, and I feel that's where part of his regret comes in. He wasn't able to be emotionally available for Kolyat (or himself) and instead returned to being a "tool" again like he had before he met his wife, taking actions of which he's not very proud. When we meet him in ME2 he's dying and does already see himself as dead but meeting Shepard "wakes" him up again. Reminds him that he is still alive. Cortez is given verbal "permission" to let go, to continue living, he was fortunate to have that moment with Robert. Thane did not and fell back into old habits. He's just at a different stage than Cortez, and, yeah, is a drell.
Still, I don’t think these romances are that comparable when the “target” audience is different. Thane is one of three male LIs for femShep in just one game whereas Cortez is only one of two possible males for mShep throughout the entire series, as Kaidan is not guaranteed. So a male LI is finally introduced for mShep in the last game but he's a recent widower still processing his grief. I mean, that probably is heavier than some would have preferred after waiting the whole trilogy to romance another man. It might also not be as appealing as Kaidan who already had a relationship with Shepard (and has the modded ME1 content); not without drama but it isn't as emotionally heavy. It's more familiar which can go a long way.
It's somewhat similar to ME1 when Kaidan was the only male LI for femShep, but not all femShep players wanted to romance him. Just being an option isn't always enough.
Regardless, I really like Cortez and his romance. It's really not as weird as it might seem at first.

"I wanted to support the ME3 theme of a massive war, where everyone is dealing with loss. Normally, I don't like stories about prior lost loves, but here it makes sense. When Cortez says 'I lost my husband', every player knows his sexuality, so precious word budgets aren't spent to establish that fact. Instead, the time is spent bonding over past losses and future hopes."
Dusty Everman (Cortez's writer) intend the romance to be a love story within the context of a war story. Being a new character doesn't make him valued less than other romances. He still have more scenes together than any of MaleShep's LIs (except for Liara, of course). He have more banters for MaleShep than he had for FemShep.
I adore romances with a lot of depth and intensity and deals with harder issues and FemShep and Kaidan have their own trilogy worth of drama and baggage. They suffered through grief, sadness and separation for more than three years. Their romance is just as emotionally-heavy as Cortez's. But even for modded BroShep, the game won't register Horizon and Mars as a relationship crisis point and even the new romance cut the entire 'bad' part of Kaidan's relationship arc for all the good parts. Maybe by doing so, it have the fresh feels of a Harlequinn love story that made it so appealing. Maybe it would be different if Cortez never have a husband and simply available to the story without strings attached with no background and no ugly past.

I don't see Cortez as a lesser character because of his late introduction. As I said we became fast friends and I would've loved to have more time with him. I'm just trying to say that he isn't necessarily what some might've wanted as an LI, and that Kaidan could be more appealing -- especially if someone has wanted to romance him since the beginning but couldn’t. So I don't think we're disagreeing, about anything here really? I like the connection between Cortez and Shepard -- while dependent on how one plays Shep, they've seen a lot of death as well, so this isn't new territory for them. Although it's not just about relating in death or overcoming it, necessarily. I like Cortez's story and how it fits into the game, and what the romance can bring out in Shep. Kaidan has a same-but-different relationship with Shepard between male and female. It gets the same baggage as femShep, sure, just in a different context. But we have a Kaidan thread for talk about Kaidan.

I finally managed to do Steve's romance with my latest Shepard, and I really adore these two together Their romance was absolutely sweet and I was actually really surprised how great it is. Not sure if I'd rank it the highest romance so far, but it's definitely a contestant for it (the other two being Kaidan's and Jack's). I'm still very attached to these two so I went ahead and made a music video Hope you guys enjoy!

I don't think the dead spouse trope was a factor. Thane have one (the fact that he kept remembering sex with his dead wife doesn't seem to bother many of his fans) and he have a son as well. I think there will be more Cortez fans if he was a facescanned character. perhaps if someone modded Kaidan's sex scene with their romance maybe. Maybe. I particularly think he is the most handsome man in the trilogy. But then, I'm straight, so my opinion is not worth much in that sense.

Steve's looks weren't a factor. Really, I was turned off by the idea that Steve was in serious grief over his husband and it felt weird to me to pursue him. Beyond that, I'm very partial to being able to bring my LI along with me on missions.

Beyond that, I'm very partial to being able to bring my LI along with me on missions. I hope after Andromeda BioWare are aware that most players value having a romance on the team more heavily than they realized. There's nothing wrong with doing the non-squad romances sometimes-but no one section of the fanbase should be limited to only non-squad romances. That being said personally I wish they would stop trying to do so many romances and focus on a solid 6 (or 4 all bi) romances with equal amounts of quality content. There's no reason why everyone can't have the same amount of options and no one feels like they got F* for content or quality. Steve is a great character, but yeah the first half of his story being about his dead husband was a big drag. The second half was great and if we could have more of that (and almost none of the first bit) it would have been a great example of how a non-squad romance can be done right. It was still way better than Gil/Suvi in Andromeda either way.

Do you know about a Mod that fix the dark skin tone of Steve (originally, he should be more lighter) and the lightining issues during the dialoguescenes with him? The final scene on the Normandy looks like completly other person then you have talked with him.
