I have read the last " Gaudé" recently Very good read as usual. A mix between myth and tale with quite an emphatic/symbolic/declamatory style. I would recommend anyone who hasnt read one to try it even in english, "the death of an ancient king" could be the best one. seems there s 3 version of it in english. Gaudé is very good to capture the exotic customs, and the african background of that one is perfect.

A new book arrived yesterday. I gobbled it up in one day. As always, an enjoyable read by Ilona Andrews although I'm puzzled there's no discussion of the clue that was dropped in the last book. I supposed the authors want to keep the main discussion to the main character; Dina Demille. This book follows her sister Maud after the events of the last book. From what happened last and in this book, definitely, I think the two sisters are equal to their brother Klaus. Looking forward to the next book. Surely they have to do something with that damn clue!

So been packing in the reading hours at night at the expense of sleeping more, it may be catching up with me!!!! Anyway finished The Void Queen trilogy which was good and discovered there is another trilogy after that. Had a break though and finished the seconf Semiosis book, it was OK but not as good as the first one. Then on to the next Michael Wallace trilogy regarding the Starship Blackbeard (Alliance Trilogy)and have already finished the first book Alliance Stars which was much of the same type of action as previously but with more emphasis on a different lead character and a new enemy. Still fun to read though. Have now started the second book, Alliance armada. So finished this trilogy and thus the whole series. It resolved itself well and I'd recommend the whole series from the very first series Starship Blackbeard. It's a fun, light military Sci fi with good characters a decent story and some bizarre stuff that the author incorporates quite well that could have come off badly but didn't. The last trilogy felt a little bit a repeat of the previous one with just a different enemy but the story was interesting enough to carry it.

Trying some nonfiction: Abraham Lincoln in the Kitchen is a culinary biography unlike any before. The very assertion of the title--that Abraham Lincoln cooked--is fascinating and true. It's an insight into the everyday life of one of our nation's favorite and most esteemed presidents and a way to experience flavors and textures of the past. Eighmey solves riddles such as what type of barbecue could be served to thousands at political rallies when paper plates and napkins didn't exist, and what gingerbread recipe could have been Lincoln's childhood favorite when few families owned cookie cutters and he could carry the cookies in his pocket. Through Eighmey's eyes and culinary research and experiments--including sleuthing for Lincoln's grocery bills in Springfield ledgers and turning a backyard grill into a cast-iron stove--the foods that Lincoln enjoyed, cooked, or served are translated into modern recipes so that authentic meals and foods of 1820-1865 are possible for home cooks. Feel free to pull up a chair to Lincoln's table.

I did. I got it on my Kindle, but I want to finish this first before I start it. I am almost finished it, just the epilogue to read. I'm about 2/3 of the way through it. THis particular book reminds me of David Weber and John Ringo's Empire of Man books, which I highly recommend: Roger Ramius Sergei Chiang MacClintock didn't understand.
He was young, handsome, athletic, an excellent dresser, and third in line for the Throne of Man ... so why wouldn't anyone at Court trust him?
Why wouldn't even his own mother, the Empress, explain why they didn't trust him Or why the very mention of his father's name was forbidden at Court Or why his mother had decided to pack him off to a backwater planet aboard what was little more than a tramp freighter to represent her at a local political event better suited to a third assistant undersecretary of state
It probably wasn't too surprising that someone in his position should react by becoming spoiled, self-centered, and petulant. After all, what else did he have to do with his life?
But that was before a saboteur tried to blow up his transport. Then warships of the Empire of Man's worst rivals shot the crippled vessel out of space. Then Roger found himself shipwrecked on the planet Marduk, whose jungles were full of damnbeasts, killerpillars, carnivorous plants, torrential rain, and barbarian hordes with really bad dispositions. Now all Roger has to do is hike halfway around the entire planet, then capture a spaceport from the Bad Guys, somehow commandeer a starship, and then go home to Mother for explanations.
Fortunately, Roger has an ace in the hole: Bravo Company of Bronze Battalion of The Empress' Own Regiment. If anyone can get him off Marduk alive, it's the Bronze Barbarians.
Assuming that Prince Roger manages to grow up before he gets all of them killed.I don't think the series was ever finished (I think there were supposed to be seven books, only four were written) but it did end at a good spot.

That looks interesting. Re Ruined Terra: I thought it was pretty average and probably the worst of all the series so far. A lot of the story just seemed I just found uninteresting till the end and some of the decision making by key characters was woeful and not in line with the past books. Some of the plot devices like the EMP that disables armour that is EMP proof were terrible, "Julia" AKA Kelsey 2's miraculous rescue mission and Sean 2's cameo in that were just hard to believe and the story seemed very short and rushed. After the break through to the Megacity I am keen to see what happens but yeah, sorry I paid for this instalment it just seemed to meaninglessly go nowhere and all it achieved was killing off a lot of character's.

So been reading a series of Military Sci Fi books called The Lost Fleets by Jack Campbell. I just finished book 3 I think. They are a conundrum in that the story is interesting but the characters aren't and they are just very repetitive. I don't need to here that the view screen in the flagship is really large and clear every time someone looks at it!!!! The author also has this weir habit of referring to characters by their rank and full name and then in the same paragraph by their first name over and over again. It gets tiring as does the almost teen romance spin on the main characters, yep very aware that Kelsey loves Jason and misses him very much when they are apart and totally not interested that the girls are excited about going shopping in the middle of a crisis and war and that Kevin loves hamburgers!!!! I could go on but you probably get the message!!!! Anyway I am enjoying them for the story but I am not sure I'd recommend them.

I just discovered Ruth Ware. She writes great mystery novels. I have read 'The Death of Mrs. WesterwayÄ and am now reading 'In a dark, dark wood' I like her style, it's interesting and mysterious with believable characters

Just started "Green Mars" by Kim Stanley Robinson.
It's the 2nd book in a trilogy about mankind's attempts to colonize and terraform Mars. The first entry, "Red Mars" was very good. It struck a nice balance between accessibility and hard sci-fi, had well drawn characters, felt believable and set the stage perfectly. I'm looking forward to seeing where this story goes.

Finished this recently, for a bit it seemed to be going too well to be an Abercrombie novel but he fixed it by the end. I like the way he embodies his third person narration based of who he's writing, it's not hugely overt but it allows for some genuinely distinct voices. He also has a refreshingly unromantic approach to sex and relationships in fantasy. And his antagonists are very, very hateable. There are some bits of his writing that that adopt a more pulpy aesthetic than I remember but that might just be because I haven't read him in a while (and it's not necessarily a bad thing anyway). Like the entire cast (Rikke, Orso and Savine especially), very curious about how he's going to fuck them all up (further) as the series progresses.

I could go on but you probably get the message!!!! Anyway I am enjoying them for the story but I am not sure I'd recommend them. So I finished the five books in this series, the last couple of books redeemed the characters a fair bit and the story continues to be engaging. The resolution to this series was well done but it launches a trilogy of its own which I cannot not read having read so much in the story that has transpired already. The next trilogy starts with the book: Investigating what the next trilogy led me to find that this writer is prodigious. I was unaware that there were several books prior to The Lost Fleet that lead up to it and several other side arch's as well. I have no interest in going down those paths but wanted to see where the continuation of the Lost Fleets story ended up. A salutary call out to the author who for the past twelve or more months who had kidney failure and has continued writing to conclude several books from home on dialysis and who thanked his readers for getting him through some dark times. Amazing achievement. His books: raymondlweil.com/index.html

I finally finished Armadale by Wilkie Collins. It started off pretty good and the suspense and wondering what was going to happen was pretty high. I was ready to declare it an excellent book as it had a unique plot a very good villainess and some other good characters. Unfortunately that was about 1/2 way through the book. It was just far too long (720 pages!) and really lost momentum and got bogged down. I think the length of these 19th century novels is due to many of them being serialized in magazines. In any case, still worth a read but it could have been a lot better than it was if it concluded much earlier. I should probably go back to Sci Fi for a few books next.

I was going to start another Wilkie collins novel but did indeed decide to try some new sci fi. There was two quadrilogy series on sale cheap on amazon kindle by an author names Craig Falconer. I know nothing about this author so will see how it goes.

No alien menace is too menacing, no galactic rift too rifty for the multiverse's most-trusted Interdimensional Insurance Agent in these three brand-new adventures and two classic escapades. Whether he's underwriting for an overlord, or wearing a pocket protector in a pocket universe, Tom Stranger has just one policy: providing quality customer service. With his trusty Combat Wombat at his side, and the world's worst intern in his way, Tom vows to insure and protect. And nothing - not an invading skeleton army nor evil dolphin kidnappers nor misplacing his favorite bowtie - will stop him from kicking ass and adjusting claims. Written by Audible number-one bestseller Larry Correia, and featuring the narrative stylings of Adam Baldwin, #1 in Customer Service: The Complete Adventures of Tom Stranger

Been reading the massive Malazan Fallen series for the past 4 months currently finishing up the prequels. After them it'll be time for tCG and Ian remaining 3 books looking forward to that. Gotta say easily my favourite series I've come across.

Well I have done something I very rarely do and that is stop reading one book (around about chapter 10) and start up another book.
I might have to wait till summer to restart this sci fi series when I may have more patience. I was really not enjoying the 1st book at all. Back to Wilkie Collins novels for now.
