No matter how egregiously wrong other posters might be, please do not introduce real world religion or politics here. Also, I'm trying to read " Cavens and Creatures" by Robert Bevan. It was highly recommended by a good friend, but I don't see the appeal and am contemplating re-evaluating our friendship. There is too much gross bodily fluid description for my taste.

Currently reading this, it was free or .99 cents, it's not a bad book actually a bit formulaic like Empire of Bones and some other military Sci-Fi I have read but the main character also reminds me a bit of Honor Harrington. Genesis: A Military Sci-Fi Series (Holy War Book 1) First contact gone wrong... It was every starship captainβs nightmare, and for Travis Miller, it was his own personal hell. Heβd done everything by the book, but when the Tahni had attacked him and his crew, there was no choice but to return fire and destroy the first alien vessel humans had ever encountered. Excoriated in the press, his career in shambles, Travis is exiled to a long patrol of the outer colony worlds. Forgotten, except as a bad exampleβ¦until the Tahni prove him right by declaring war on the human Commonwealth. Now, Travis Miller is the tip of the spear. Humanityβs best hope for turning back an overwhelming assault on human space. Because to the Tahni, humans are infidels and this is a holy warβ¦ So finished the first book and enjoyed it a lot and moved straight on to the next one. The first book felt like it was still building the story and world state even at the end and there is an over arching story of who built all the habitable worlds and wormholes to them which has only at this stage been lightly touched on. The main story is centred on humanity discovering and becoming involved in a war with another human like race who believe they are the chosen of the gods who built the habitable worlds. The other focus has been building a core of characters which the author has done pretty well and all seem pretty realistic from a military perspective and none are too skewed in any particularly stupid way to make them unrealistic and or or unlikable. Not sure if I posted since this one but anyway, read book three which was great and also finished book 4 which was very good but the ending whilst good just seemed a bit lame. I would thoroughly recommend these to fans of Military Sci Fi. Book 3 Book 4

Reading the first book in the Endling series by Katherine Applegate. Yes, it's a children's book with a doglike creature for a protagonist. Yes, it also starts with gruesome child murder

So taking a chance on a book that when I read the blurb I was a bit unsure, read some reviews and they were all glowing 4.5/5 reviews and when it said it paid homage to Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy I thought oh well it's only $4. The book is by S.E. Anderson and is called Starstruck: Sci-fi fantasy humor (Starstruck Saga Book 1) "After an incident with a hot-air balloon causes college-dropout Sally Webber to lose her job, she sets off to find direction in her life. Crashing into a teleporting alien, however, is not on her to-do list. Now sheβs on the run from TV-drama-loving aliens, and things are just getting started.
Zander wonβt stop reeling her into life-or-death situations to save her planet, as he waits for his laser-wielding sister to search the universe for him. Though Sally isnβt quite sure if he wants to save Earth from annihilation, or just quell his curiosity of all things human.
Sally has to find lost alien emissaries, as well as a job, and stop the planet from getting incinerated in the process. But with Zander as her roommate, what could possibly go wrong?"The opening chapters were pretty funny, the main character I am having a bit of trouble warming too and the other main character the alien Zander I am not finding as funny as I think he is supposed to be. That said it is light and mildly funny most of the time but it is a bit painful and without wanting to sound sexist at all the book may be a better read for female readers. I just honestly cannot relate to some of the dilemmas/thoughts/situations the main character Sally dwells upon and how she processes certain situations. As I said I just cannot relate to her in many ways and I am normally someone who relates well and prefers female lead characters in games and books. Or maybe it's just that I am too old to relate to a person of 19 these days. At this stage I will stick with it but I have low expectations and don't expect to buy the second book unless it gets a lot better.

Or maybe it's just that I am too old to relate to a person of 19 these days. I feel you on this. I read a book by Leigh Bardugo like 2 years ago and boy, am I too old for this. All of the main characters were teenaged YA tropes and I couldn't muster the energy to care about their troubles.

All of the main characters were teenaged YA tropes and I couldn't muster the energy to care about their troubles. That about sums it up. And in this book throw in a "zany" alien and I am finding it all a bit too ungrounded in reality, which can work but the best characters have more than one dimension and I am not sure I'd spend time worrying about my one week old romance over whether or not to help save the Earth. I actually have a 19 YO and 17 YO son and daughter, neither whom I can draw any comparison to in regards to the book I am reading.

It was OK to Good, oddly I found the TV show more enjoyable and it is a light read but having started the second book I am already seeing that perhaps the story is just going to keep repeating the same process over and over. I hope I am proven wrong.

Tom Ormson and Kyrie Smith are suffering the growing pains of young romance and young business people. Tom worries obsessively about the new fryer in the diner exploding. As though he didn't have enough on his mind, though, life decides it's time for a sabre-tooth with vengeance on her mind to come to town, and for the Great Sky Dragon to try to arrange a marriage for Tom. Meanwhile, out at the old amusement park, the one with the really good wooden roller-coaster, a series of bizarre murders is taking place. And, as if that were not enough, Conan Lung, dragon shifter, ex-triad member and waiter extraordinaire starts his country singing career with an original song "If I Could Fly to You." When Kyrie is kidnapped, it's all Tom can do to make sure he protects her while not eating anyone.

Took a short break from Endling to read We Only Find Them When They Are Dead. I thought this was sci-fi. It was drama in a sci-fi setting instead. My son gave me "Shadow and Bone" ( bierkrug was this the one you were referring to?) the first book of the Trilogy in paperback for Christmas so thought I'd knock that over after enjoying the TV show. The one I read was Six of Crows, the follow up series to this.

I'm currently reading The Stranger Times by C.K. McDonnell. It's a sarcasticly written urban fantasy novel - I can recommend it to fans of teh Peter Grant mysteries. It's about a newspaper crew, dedicated to strange and mysterious news (think Nessie sightings or UFO abductions, ghosts etc). None of the staff actually believes in this stuff, until they a thrown into a supernatural adventure.
So far, the novel is a delight, the characters are interesting and the story is engaging.

Just finished the Bioware 25 massive tome. dazk They included the reason why the "medicine" quest on Kadara in MEA was cut - the game had already been submitted for ESRB rating and "drug use" wasn't included in the declarations. Before that I read Arthur C. Clarke's Against the Fall of Night. At some point I will probably read the later, longer version re-titled The City and the Stars. Next up is Matthew Pearl's third novel, The Lost Dickens. I really enjoyed his first two books, though parts of the The Dante Club were a little on the gross and disgusting side.

Mmmm interesting the rating in Australia clearly indicates Drug Use in the game and is MA+ meaning 16+ with parental supervision. Do you know what it is in the US? I read "The City and The Stars" or I bought it and didn't read it as I remember nothing of it even after just skimming it. Maybe I should re-read it and discover my memory is worse than I suspected or discover I have had a book on my bookshelf for over 10 years I haven't read!!!

I just pulled it up: here it's rated M for mature but neither drugs nor alcohol are listed:
blood nudity strong language strong sexual content violence

Not sure TBH, MEA has lots of drinking in it. Beers with Liam, cocktails at the bar, Lexi and her bottle of wine and Akantha??? Maybe alcohol is why I don't remember reading The City and The Starts. When I started reading your first sentence I thought that was what you were going to say.

Its definitely the sexual stuff. US censors are weird, you can have tons of explicit violence and gore, but basically any sex stuff and it gets a restrictive rating. And they're even worse if its anything other than vanilla guy/girl sex. They've even loosened up about explicit language, but sex remains a big taboo.. which is sort of weird, since this is one of the last vestiges of the prudishness of a bygone era.

Emilia King has made an art of bad choices. Just ask her mother, sheβll tell you every single thing sheβs done wrong for years.
When her latest bad choice changes the locks to their apartment and leaves all her stuff on the doorstep, Emilia canβt bear to hear βI told you soβ one more time. So she moves in with her grandfather. Then she can have some space to figure out whoβ¦and what she wants to be, without her mother breathing down her neck.
What she finds there is anything but peace. Her grandfather battles invisible creatures in the dark. Neighbors torn apart by wild beasts.
Not to mention the moody, gorgeous man across the street with the motorcycle. The kind of man thatβs her kryponite.
But when her grandfather falls ill, his position of head of the Neighborhood Watch falls to her. And in this neighborhood, itβs more than measuring grass height or catching petty thefts.
As she uncovers her grandfatherβs double life, his mistakes are coming back to stalk the neighborhood in the form of a vicious, shapeshifting beast. Thrust into a world of magic and monsters, Emilia is out of her depth.
Can she save the neighborhood? And do it without falling for the fae across the street?

So finished The Shadow and Bone Trilogy and it was not as good a I had hoped based on the first series of the TV show. The second book I think was the weakest and the third book was the best and at least provided a good finish to the series but over all it was a bit weak in story, characters and lore. Started a new series of books called Dropship Troopers by Rick Partlow, they seem related and after the Rick Partlow books I read before "Holy War" set after those but written before them. "Publisher's Summary
Four complete books of explosive, military sci-fi action complete the entire first arc of the best-selling Drop Trooper series.
Go to war or go to jail. For small-time street hustler Cam Alvarez, the choice is simple....
He has no family, no friends, no place in the world...nothing to lose. When his latest con results in the death of a cartel hit man, Cam opts to join the Marines and leave Earth to fight a vicious alien enemy.
Drafted into the Marine Drop-Troopers, Cam discovers thereβs one thing heβs even better at than running street-con games, and thatβs killing the enemy. Wrapped in an armoured battle-suit, Cam finds purpose amid the horror and destruction of the war, and the opportunity for a new sort of friends and family...if he can break the habits of a life spent alone, trusting no one.
And if he can survive...."Bit of a slow start building the main character but has picked up pace and like the others in Holy War the author writes really good accurate "Military" based Science Fiction.
