I have a copy of it sitting in the bookcase here next to my PC, I must have gotten it for an xmas gift or something. Haven't read it, but may give it a shake if I enjoy Seveneves

Seveneves is the only Neal Stephenson book I've read. But my brother (who is a math/physics geek) is a fan of his.

Snow blind by Christopher Golden. I'm like halfway through but boy, the writing is a bit too simplistic for my taste. Meanwhile, I keep buying books and my to-read-pile seems to be ever growing, no matter how much I read XD

Decided to reread some real Star Wars sequel. Before Disney got its claws on it: The Empire stands at the brink of total collapse. But they have saved their most heinous plan for last. First a plot is hatched that could destroy the New Republic in a bloodbath of genocide and civil war. Then comes the shocking news that Grand Admiral Thrawn--the most cunning and ruthless warlord in history--has apparently returned from the dead to lead the Empire to a long-prophesied victory. Facing incredible odds, Han and Leia begin a desperate race against time to prevent the New Republic from unraveling in the face of two inexplicable threats--one from within and one from without. Meanwhile, Luke teams up with Mara Jade, using the Force to track down a mysterious pirate ship with a crew of clones. Yet, perhaps most dangerous of all, are those who lurk in the shadows, orchestrating a dark plan that will turn the New Republic and the Empire into their playthings.

That was when the EU was great and made star wars as fun as the movies. Before Mickey got his grubby white-gloved, three-fingered paws on the franchise.

The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie. Apparently this guy is a household fantasy author name which I was not aware of. But the book certainly starts out really intriguing.

The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie. Apparently this guy is a household fantasy author name which I was not aware of. But the book certainly starts out really intriguing. Easily one of the best recent fantasy series I've read. Say one thing for Logen Ninefingers, say he makes for a great grimdark/fantasy protagonist. And he's probably only the second best First Law character (first place easily goes to Glokta, one of the all-time great fantasy characters, period).

And he's probably only the second best First Law character (first place easily goes to Glokta, one of the all-time great fantasy characters, period). Damn wish I had known this last night spent ages trying to find a fantasy book to read. Settled on an older book by Anne McCaffrey "The Ship That Sang". I had always put off reading it as I had read what I thought was a similar book that I loved called "A Plague of Angels" by Sherri S Tepper which I would recommend to anyone: "Atop a twisting, canyon-climbing road, a witch lurks in a fortress built strong to keep out dragons and ogres. In another part of the countryside, a young orphan is maturing into a beautiful woman in the enchanted village that is her home. Somewhere nearby, a young man is seeking adventure after running away from his family's small farm. Suddenly a strange and terrible prophecy sets off a chain of events that will bring these three together in the heroic, romantic, and thrilling tale of an age-old battle." This description is nowhere near a fitting description for a Plague of Angels story, this comment by a reviewer probably sums it up better. spoilered because of size and if you'd rather big surprises on how the book develops not so much story spoilers: "It is hard to describe this book, honestly it is just one of those books you have to read to understand. I have read a Tepper book before, and she does have a way to build a story.
This starts as fantasy, but nothing is as it seems. No it is this strange mix of fantasy and sci-fi and Tepper does it so well. She mixes things up and little by little I get to understand this world. Is it Earth? Is it a new planet? Well, I will not tell you that, read and see. What I can tell you is that it is a world that got destroyed by war, by stupidity, by humans, what else. Some left for another planet and those left behind struggled to get by. In the countryside there are villages and farmers. In the cities gangs rule with weapons. In Archetypal villages archetypes live; oracles, prophets, heroes, princesses, witches. Why? To save the rest from those who might cause trouble. There is also Edgers who live behinds walls and have technology, and the place of power where Families rule and use androids. But there are also ogres and dragons in the forest. Like I said, nothing is what it seems.
There you go, a world so strange, but still very real. There are reasons for everything and we get to know why things are like they are. Books are burned if they are older than 50 years, because if you can’t read about the past, you can’t remember it and you can’t go to war over silly things. There are people out there trying to save nature. And while I read I kept wondering what, and how. The clues are there and it was so fun finding out more. I love a well created world and that it sure is.
About the story then. Well a young man leaves for the city and becomes a ganger. And orphan is taken to an archetypal village and at the place of power a woman wants just that, power, and to go to the stars. These stories are all connected. I liked Abasio, the boy who leaves for the city. He knows the cities are bad, his own mum had been a gangers concubine and fled. But still he leaves. Orphan is a mystery, and someone is out after her. But she is just a sweet girl. And then there are others that they meet, good people, and bad people.
I liked it, it was a freaky book, in a good way. I love fantasy so of course I was all over that angle, and sci-fi is fun too. This mix here, more fantasy than sci-fi is another great mix. There is technology, just not much, or used that much. Therefore it makes it the more interesting. She also has a way to keep you interested, because you can’t see anything coming.
What to call this book then? Post-apocalyptic, dystopia, fantasy, sci-fi, your call. Whatever suits you. And that is also its strong side, it can be something for everyone.
I do recommend it if you want to try something different. Tepper is a master storyteller and she will keep on surprising you." Anyway I am looking forward to reading The Ship That Sang: "The brain was perfect, the tiny, crippled body useless. So technology rescued the brain and put it in an environment that conditioned it to live in a different kind of body - a spaceship. Here the human mind, more subtle, infinitely more complex than any computer ever devised, could be linked to the massive and delicate strengths, the total recall, and the incredible speeds of space. But the brain behind the ship was entirely feminine - a complex, loving, strong, weak, gentle savage - a personality, all-woman, called Helva..."

So finished all of the 9 available Drop Troopers books by Rick Partlow, there is I believe one more to go which was disappointing to find out as I expected to read all of them in a row. 10 will be released in July. Overall if you like Military Sci Fi and have Kindle unlimited as then they are free they are a good read with some good characters and good stories in each book.

A trick of magic, a twist of fate. As the orphaned nephew of the king, trusted companion to his cousin, and second heir to the throne of Skala, Prince Tobin's future is clear. But not as clear as the spring in which a hill witch shows him his true face--and his secret destiny.... Now Tobin carries a burden he cannot share with even his closest friend, Ki, his squire. He is to rule--not as he is but as he was born: a woman. Given the shape of a boy by dark magic, Tobin is the last hope of the people of Illior--those who desperately seek a return to the old ways, when Skala was ruled by a line of warrior queens. They still believe that only a woman can lift the war, famine, and pestilence that have run rampant through the land since the king usurped his half sister's throne. It is these outlaw wizards and witches who protect Tobin--and it is for them that Tobin must accept his fate. With the unsuspecting yet fiercely loyal Ki at his side, Tobin must turn traitor against the only blood ties he has left. He must lift the masks of Skala's rulers to show their true colors--before he can reveal the power of the woman within himself. ***** If there's one question I'd like to ask of the God Illior who dictated that Skala must be ruled by Queens from the line of Thelatimos, else it would be visited by plagues, famines before eventually taken over by an old enemy, why Thelatimos and why it must be Queens. 😄 Hidden Warrior is the second book of the trilogy.

Damn wish I had known this last night spent ages trying to find a fantasy book to read.. Oh man, if you haven't read the First Law books yet then you definitely should. Such a good series, and some all-time great characters (seriously, Glotka is the fucking man, absolute S-tier all-time great fictional character). The first trilogy (First Law) is the best, but the standalone novels and then the second trilogy (Age of Madness) are also really really good, so there's a lot there to keep you busy for a while. Absolutely should be on your (and anyone else who enjoys fantasy or grimdark) to-read list.

(Jk, obviously, but you definitely should go buy and immediately read it. This may be a hot take, but I probably enjoy it even more than the LoTR trilogy, which is saying quite a lot)

Tolkien had a very deep mythology and that really shows through in the Silmarillion.

There's a depth and seriousness and grandeur to the Silmarillion that is, for all the LoTR and the Hobbit's many strengths, lacking in his more popular works. When I was in junior high and first discovered the LoTR, I made several attempts to read the Silmarillion and could never get into it, I didn't actually read it all the way through until I was a young adult. And now, its probably my favorite and most-read of all of Tolkien's work. When I'm between books and having trouble finding a new book/series to read, I'll often end up re-reading the Silmarillion. It just never gets old, imo.

This may be a hot take, but I probably enjoy it even more than the LoTR trilogy, which is saying quite a lot) I've tried, but it's a lot harder than LOTR itself: But trying again is my project for the summer. I've also picked up a copy of Unfinished Tales

I tried several times to read the Silmarillion and could never finish it. Sorry.
