True, still, earlier titles had at least conventionally attractive females (and males, for that matter) more in line with most mainstream movies and TV shows these days... I mean, it's fantasy/scifie, why have (visually) bland characters if you can help it? I don't think the companions shown so far look bland. Peebee looks like an asari, aside for her mask thing she doesn't look different. I don't think she's that worse looking then Liara in ME. Beside, people did complain about other female squadmates as well in the other games. Both Ashely and Miranda received a lot of criticism, with the latter filling the same criticism on the thread about looking like a man (specifically, Micheal Jackson). Same thing happened with Aveline and Isabela about their face being mannish, and Merrill was criticized as well. Criticism of women characters in Bioware games, about them being ugly or even mannish happened long before Inquisition. People just tend to forget (plus we don't all share the same opinions. We have people that believe the LI in DAI were beautiful/hot). On Sara, apparently the work on her is behind Scott. And not all npcs looked well in the past. My point is, we have seen very little of the women in the game, and maybe only one humanoid LI (Peebee). It's too early to draw any conclusions. True enough - we don't yet now. Although, with the earlier games, much of the "ugliness" and "mannishness" (is that even a word? hah, apparently it is!) came from the art style and/or technological limitations... the latter are no longer really prevalent though, so what remains is either a) a conscious choice in art style or simple ineptitude. I mean, when taking a look at what was already possible in a six game year old game like Skyrim...

They have to be doing it on purpose. Bioware is perfectly capable of making attractive females. They still do make good looking men. Now it's like they've decided to make the women as ugly as possible. Inquisition was the worst. I really hope they don't go down that same road again. I didn't think any of the main character men in Inquisition (save Cullen) were very attractive. Saying that as a gay man. STUPID MOUSTACHES (looking at you, Dorian and Bull). But a lack of runway model men is not a nefarious plot against gay men and non-lesbian women, especially considering there were many who thought, Dorian in particular, were very good looking. Now I'll be the first to say Sara Ryder isn't a looker. Honestly, she isn't. So what. Over on Scott's thread, half the people have immediately dismissed him for having ears too prominent, a trait I happen to like. So clearly neither Sara nor Scott are universal beauties. Character Creation exists for a reason. Make your SisRyder as much of a space babe as you'd like. But nobody is under any obligations to make tertiary (that 'bandit' leader we saw) at best characters look like divine beauties. Good luck getting everyone to agree on that universal beauty btw. I don't find white women in general (or at least, the cultural standard of beauty imposed on them) remotely physically attractive, but I can happily go on and on about the attractiveness of non-white women (I know I'm gay, I can still find women attractive). Conversely, I have a hard time finding non-white men physically attractive. I'm weird like that. Maybe you'll get your space babe with Cora. We'll just have to see. In any case, we've only seen ... what, 2 human female faces up close thus far in the advertising? That's a heck of a small sample size to jump to conclusions about Andromeda filled with ugly women.

Take a good look a Bioware's devs and you will realize why they can't seem to make women look good or animate them properly in the first place.

They are still professionals... for the most part. I just think they are sticking too much to tech like facial capture. Miranda, in my opinion, did look fine, but she could have looked a whole lot better if they did hand model her. Maybe they are lacking skilled artists? I dunno, but I usually don't attribute to intent what I can attributed to ineptitude...

I don't understand if you're talking about their physical attributes, their qualifications, or their ideology. I'd wager the latter, which might certainly be true for some... Considering they're still modeling the asari and humans with a fit body, and Peebee's default outfit shows her navel, and Cora's default armour emphasizes on her butt, I'd say it's more about them not being always at the top of their level.

Animation is a different concern . Hopefully it'll improve .

Might be... personally, from everything I saw up until now, there is some slight "agenda" coloring in there (ie. the three main authority figures on the Nexus being all female - which is, sorry, an unlikely scenario), but I'm not (yet) convinced that extends to the character designs. No, I think it's more of a push for realism in the art department that has gone wrong...

I'm doubtful since some will surely be from other species. Beside, one, as it's clearly shown in the trailer, isn't on the Nexus anymore.

These faces are so ugly. It makes me not want to play the game. Why do the SJW's have to ruin games like this? For crying out loud. Stop complaining people. Yes, facial animations are AVERAGE, but it's silly to claim you won't play a game just because of this. Be happy that all other elements of the game - characters, squadmates, combat, exploration already look very good on the newest trailer. We urge you to take a look at the details of forum personnel in question. Criticism of women characters in Bioware games, about them being ugly or even mannish happened long before Inquisition. People just tend to forget (plus we don't all share the same opinions. Uh... Stylized, in some cases overdone as fuck. And I don't really find more than 90 percent of those attractive.

What I believe is that there should be some kind of balance. Just because in the past a lot of women in videogames were stereotypical eyecandies, doesn't mean that we should reverse it now in order to achieve some kind of justice. I mean, lets have some of LIs and female NPCs conveniently attractive, and some not. It'll make majority of folks, apart from some zealots, pretty satisfied, won't it?

We have seen 4 humans so far, and 3 of them are customizable. I think that it is a little too early to declare that Bioware have an "agenda". But hey, if it makes you feel better about yourself, keep up. I never really have had any problem with any of biowares faces. (except Shepard's rapeface ) P.S. even IF some people should be "ugly" (as that is a personal view) it doesn't mean that everybody will be.

May I point out that the game is far from being finished and polished ? That's obvious to me when I watch the trailer. That reminds me the first mass effect 1 demos way before the release by the way. The final maleshep was definitely not what was showed during the demo. It might be the same for all the characters showed, femryder included. There is still room for change, modifications, and improvements.
How about we at least wait a little before starting to scream conspiracy theories ?

If this is truly a concern for some like the OP, they should have a thread to vent. The mods have all agreed that this will be the only open thread on this subject. All others are going to be merged into here. I don't have much else to say here. I know the OP from the old BSN and I know better than to touch this debate.

Funny how "it's the SJW's!!!!111" has become the go to excuse and pretext for every dummy to be as shitty as they always were but maybe never had the guts to openly be. I mean seriously, the op might have started his or her post with blaming pigeons for ruining HIS or HER game. It would have made just as much sense and would have been an equally intelligent comment.
Anywho... Trolls will be trolls. At least some can be amuzing in their fumbling about.

Might be... personally, from everything I saw up until now, there is some slight "agenda" coloring in there (ie. the three main authority figures on the Nexus being all female - which is, sorry, an unlikely scenario)Uh, what? That's really not that unlikely. Or at least, it's precisely as likely as all 3 being male. The only difference is that if they were all male, no one would bat an eye Well, some Bioware fans might, but mostly, no. Anyway, Sloane is kicked off quickly, so maybe her successor is male? Who knows? And I seriously doubt all of the authority figures in the game are going to be female, it's just that the ones on the Nexus are. And there are likely more than just those 3 in high-ranking positions aboard, not to mention other Arks etc. That is ok OP they are all lesbians, you do not need to worry about them being ugly really. Probably, still. People should start to get over the "representation" stick... games are - first and foremost - entertainment, and nobody want's to see ugly people in movies or TV - especially if there is no good reason for them being ugly and/or romance is involved. Speak for yourself. Stories are supposed to be relatable, so I'd rather see the same diversity we do in real life in those stories. And if you don't understand why people want representation, it's likely you've never had a problem being represented before. Try putting yourself in other people's shoes for a moment. Besides all that, you can't even say "no point putting ugly people in", because everyone has a slightly different opinion of what exactly that means. Another point in favour of diversity, in my view.

Firstly I'd ask that we all keep it calm This thread exists because one of our members ( luzarius ) has a view, and a forum exists to allow such views to be expressed. (is it a view I agree with, hell no, but I back luzarius ' ability to share the view in one place and for it to be discussed civilly). I took the time to check out luzarius ' twitter feed to see if I could understand his perspective better. His idea of a great female game character is Final Fantasy XV's Cindy, for example: Now don't get me wrong, I like Cindy too, I'm sure it's very hot working in that garage and no protective equipment is required at all . I've already set out why I think luzarius ' perspective is dead wrong, but I would additionally like to say this: Gaming's history is full of blonde busty 'eye candy', but when times rightly change and characters become more of a mixture, it's not right to get all upset about it, so long as games don't go completely the other way, and totally avoid character models that many do find attractive. Mass Effect has not avoided the classic 'curvy female' look, we have the Asari, Miranda, Ashley (latterly). And not all the characters have been revealed for MEA yet. Ryder (in both genders) is a story of a more 'ordinary' person who becomes a hero, and the default appearance reflects that with youngish non-model characters (though with the CC that's open to personal change).

Man, some of you people... So, let me get this straight: Having bland, moderately attractive characters is ok because "realism", but the majority of the leaders on the Nexus being female, although close to 90% of all explorers - space and otherwise - in human history have been male is also ok because... what? It's just scifie? Maybe I'm too much of a purist there, but I like me some consistency - either you do hard scifie or you do science-fantasy.
