If I remember correct Jarvis is still "alive" outside of that body, or do I remember wrong? That is like saying that EDI is the same as the VI on Lunar base. Considering after Jarvis became the Vision he installed Friday in all of his suits I'm gonna say no. Jarvis does not exist outside of the Vision anymore. Aha, that should teach me to talk about things I don't check up on. Thanks!

If I remember correct Jarvis is still "alive" outside of that body, or do I remember wrong? That is like saying that EDI is the same as the VI on Lunar base. Not quite, as VIs are explicity stated to be non-sapient constructs, essentially just programs that mimic intelligence. JARVIS has been portrayed thus far as a true AI, a self-aware entity in its own right. The transition is more like going from Shepard to controlShep. And yes, that is Shepard in the sense of continuity from one self aware entity to the next. In both cases, it's what's added that makes a difference, not what's taken away. JARVIS becomes Vision. Shepard becomes controlShep. One doesn't end and the other begins independently of each other. Really this was more of a joke post. I was going to make a discountJARVIS! joke about the MEA AI, but since someone already mentioned it, I decided to do something different.

If he's not self-aware, he's nothing more than a fancy Cortana which is kinda boring. Cortana was the AI in Halo before being Windows 10 intelligent assistant.

As long as we're doing wild-ass guessing: Some human decided to take Avina's uselessness as a challenge and dug up a primitive human VI Siri to make someone even more useless. SAM stands for Statistical Analysis Machine. SAM stands for Secretion Analysis Machine. He stayed in contact with the Milky Way long enough to learn about his brother's destruction during the Cerberus raid, and the entire plot is caused by his plot for revenge on all humans. He's an EDI-like AI intended to help pathfinders locate useful resources and settlement locations. He's not synthetic at all: "Sam" is actually a nickname for the salarian pilot who, in ME1's tradition of disabled ace pilots acting as exposition fairies, uses a bionic vocalizer to compensate for a severe speech impediment.

What if SAM is actually a Geth AI that has somehow snuck itself aboard the Tempest by pretending to be a simple VI.
Yeah, that's unlikely. Just trying to find a way to bring my Geth bros to Andromeda without breaking the lore.

Ryder: SAM, can you remotely pilot the shuttle for a few minutes? SAM: Of course... Assuming Direct Control. Ryder: I don't know why, but something about that sentence deeply unnerves me.

More official info about SAM. From Eurogamer interview posted today. Under spoiler tag, because spoiler. Ryder speaks to a character named Sam, or SAM, and I was wondering whether this is your version of EDI on the Tempest [your new Normandy]?
Fabrice Condominas: Yes and no. Yes, in the sense that SAM is ultimately not a living being - its more of an AI or robot. But it's way broader than EDI - the relationship is way different. SAM handles a number of things as well as your vessel. It is connected to you permanently and was connected to - and knew - your father, Alec. There's a very specific relationship there. It's more of a partner than EDI was - you're way closer emotionally to SA

What do you think could all that mean? I'm starting to get wierd ideas about what SAM really is, like he might containe dadRyder memories or something like that also, the part about it being "more of"an AI "or" a robot. ??? I'm really intrigued

Someone mentioned Cortana -the Halo one- in the twitter thread and it just made me think that SAM could be based off a real person brain like Cortana, instead of being fully artificial. It would now be a synthetic though.
The connection could be that SAM has been with the Ryder family for years. Someone had to raise the twins while Alec was being busy with N7 duties. Yeah, SAM would be Mama Ryder...

ok, I read that, but I didn't get what the Cortana reference meant because I haven't played Halo.

Are we seriously using spoiler blocks in the character discussion threads? I figured spoilers were implied in these threads. I'll gladly participate if we are discussing openly, as in the other character threads.
Edit: Screw it.
So, Fabrice Condominas had the following interaction with Eurogamer regarding SAM, that should totally be in the OP, and not hidden in a spoiler block:
EG: Ryder speaks to a character named Sam, or SAM, and I was wondering whether this is your version of EDI on the Tempest [your new Normandy]?
Fabrice Condominas: Yes and no. Yes, in the sense that SAM is ultimately not a living being - its more of an AI or robot. But it's way broader than EDI - the relationship is way different. It's more of a partner than EDI was - you're way closer emotionally to SAM.
I had hoped that things had changed, since the leak, and that SAM would be a bodiless voice. Fabrice's use of the word "robot" seem to suggest otherwise. I was not a fan of EDI getting a body. Hopefully, SAM proves to be a worthwhile squaddie.

Personally, sometimes I find it hard to tell when or where is appropriate to spoiler tag things, and I'd rather do too much than too little. But I guess you're right. If someone complains I'm pointing the finger at you though I'm taking the spoiler tag off my posts

I don't think there's any need to Spoiler stuff about SAM here. If you didn't want to know about SAM why be in a thread about SAM? To that end, the twitter thread mentioned a Eurogamer interview with some more info on SAM: I haven't played all the Halo games and it was a while ago but she did used to travel around with the protagonist and comment on stuff in much the same way that we've seen SAM do in the demos. She didn't have a body but she did have an image as a hologram projection: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cortana_(Halo)

We mostly want to avoid story spoilers. People don't want to know how the game begins or ends. If they're in the SAM thread, though, they likely want the latest SAM news.

I completely agree with what you said about EDI - giving her a body was a mistake, in my opinion. I dunno, maybe there would have been a better way to go about it. Like, perhaps making her reasoning more about being able to help via combat, and then making the body not look like a sex bot. Like, it's a robot body, it could be anything. It could be made out of guns. Maybe because my mind immediately went to JARVIS as a comparison, I agree that a disembodied voice companion is more interesting to me. But, just because he used the word robot doesn't necessarily mean that it will be like EDI. I mean, as I said, a robot body could be anything. It could be more akin to a Star Wars droid, maybe, or like Avina where it has hologram stations. EDIT: I guess no spoiler tags, then!

I was speculating that SAM was around pre-trip to Andromeda and Alec had it raise the twins while he was away on duty (he's the first N7 we see with "time" for a family, so I suspect he wasn't around much). Effectively making SAM a surrogate parent to the twins and it gives them an emotional connection to it that isn't just "it used to be used by my father". I also got the crazy idea that SAM isn't an artificial intelligence, but a synthetic based off the real Mama Ryder's brain, but that's another story and might be too crazy.

If Fabrice was being literal, "robot" implies a machine body of some sort, so cool little omnitool holograms would be eliminated as SAM's only face. Shame, that. You're right that its body could take any form, though I bet it will be humanoid. It's too easy for them to do otherwise; and fans would complain that SAM was "less advanced" than EDI if it weren't just as human-like. It sounds like it's an AI created to assist the Pathfinder, specifically. I imagine it will also assist with all sorts of tasks aboard Tempest. We have a salarian pilot, but we know nothing of any other specific crew. Should be interesting, I guess, as long as it's nothing like EDI 2.0. I'll trust them to make it different.
