Really? Parts of their personality is preset? I don't remember seeing that. Where was that revealed? In this interview: www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/mass-effect-andromeda-interview-ces-2017/Q: Does player-character gender affect the interactions, dialogue, or story? Mike Gamble: Sort of. The story is the same, but the options and voiceover and personality that comes out is different between Scott and Sarah. The writers have gone through to make sure that the responses that Scott says and the responses that Sarah says are different, because they're two individual characters and they're not the same person. I think they mean that Scott and Sara are different as the sibling. So the sibling you don't choose to play doesn't just have the same default personality. Think Bethany vs Carver. Or scratch that, it DOES sound like they're talking about the one you play. Maybe someone should clarify, because that doesn't make sense when we can choose the tone of our responses. Plus that would be a LOT of work.

So you want the game to start in the Mars archives while Sara guards/ researches with a bunch of Prothean scientists? Well I wouldn't mind if it did but that's not the point. Just don't make those assumptions and statements about how the player character felt about their early service and we would have no problem. If it's only the non-player version of the character then there is no problem. If the dialog option exisists where Ryder talks about their pre service you might be able to change their mind for them...just saying. As a general rule of thumb everything which happens to a character before the game is BioWare's responsibility, everything that happens to a character after the game is BioWare's responsibility. Most of the things (good RPGs let us do say....95% of things) is our responsibity (as in the player base)

So you want the game to start in the Mars archives while Sara guards/ researches with a bunch of Prothean scientists? That would be preferable to Bioware assuming how supposedly 'my' character would feel about things. I think that would be a cool way to start the game. You choose a character ... then play out the earlier life of that character ... until dad calls both Ryders up to join in an expedition. Initially, dad's in charge and Ryder is just a bit player ... albeit on one of the exploratory teams, not as a colonist. Things play out in an unexpected fashion, with Ryder and Liam ending up somewhere they didn't expect. Eventually, when dad goes off in a different direction, Ryder become the Pathfinder and the sibling heads up one of the other exploration teams.
In DAO ... this is kind of how it played out and I really enjoyed it. In fact, I ended up with an extra play through ... because I didn't realize that the circle elf mage was duplicative to the circle human mage and I wanted to see how the alienage elf started out. I liked the unique backstory of the protagonists. In ME:A, we could have had all that backstory, one for both Ryders ... then going into cryosleep ... then waking up to what had been going on, while Ryder was out. With the dialog options, that could have given me choices on how Ryder felt about things.
Shepard started out ME as a hero and an N7. Giving the twins a chance to play their early backstory could have cemented the idea that they are just starting out and not an established persona. Oh well.
Totally changing topics ... based on exceptionally limited exposure, I think Jaal is going to be one of my favorite characters. Don't have much of a feel for Drack or Vetra yet ... but this could be a case of wanting to take all the squadmates all the time. I'm sure that dilemma is one BioWare would not mind at all.

I'm afraid if you wanted to fully feel either Ryder sibling as 'your', or indeed 'our' character, and not BioWare's, I think you'd have better luck in an Elder Scrolls, or Sims game, not Andromeda. Arguably, there has always been an extent of preset characteristics to BioWare's protagonists. Not nearly to this extent though. They've been able to do characters who feel more like our characters rather than Bioware's characters. Most recently is literally their latest game before this one, Dragon Age: Inquisition. Then why don't we start the game with the birth of the Ryder twins and lead them all the way through their entire life stories up until the moment they leave for Andromeda and then through their entire life experience in the Andromeda Galaxy until they die? At some point BioWare is going to have to do something to establish at least a little flavor otherwise. And their statements on who Ryder was pretty vague where you the player can do with it what you want to do. I mean, really, at the end of the day Ryder is not 'my' character as much as the Inquisitor, Hawk, or Shepard were. Its 'our' character. We are in a collaboration with BioWare here to create a character. And pretty much every Video Game RPG that I have ever played operates under this principle. Games like Skyrim and FO 4 even operate on this basic principle. I would have liked them to do something like the backstory conversation we have with Josephine in DAI, where you get to choose how you felt about your background. That is much better than them just choosing how Scott and Sarah feel. I see no reason for them to not do something like this in the game. After all the character profiles we got for each Inquisitor are very similar to what we have gotten on our Ryders'

You're right that there is no reason for them not to, but they have decided not to.

So if that isn't the full squad, what's the number going to be? Jaal would make the total 6 sooooo...7,8?

I'm torn now. I'd like to play male, but also would love to have the archeologist background instead of a military one. *Humming Indiana Jones theme* I don't think Sara is an archeologist. As I read it, she served as military support for them. I'm thinking some kind of bodyguard or protective detail or something? Nothing that I've read says that she has a science background, only that she was thrilled to be serving the scientists. Ah. Now there's a distinct possibility. They still have whatever personality/interests you want them to, they just served their warrior roles as protectors of whatever, whether there was a personal interest or not. Good thinking there.

Did they confirm jaal's gender anywhere? I mean I assumed jaal was a male cause the look and sound (presume I'm thinking of the right voice anyway) read like "male" to me but apparently some people aren't sure.

The angaran are clearly sexually dimorphic, you can see male and female differences in the trailer. The males are bigger have more...tentacles (they look more dramatic)? Legs are more bendy, face structure is different and they're a lot more bulkier. The voice (you have to be quick to catch it) is coming from the female with the headress behind Jaal. She's the one talking and she looks like an important figure.

Think he's a male, seeing as behind him to the right is another Angaran who's slightly smaller with smaller tubes sticking out of her ears. Of course, this is all based off'a size, though. I don't really have any idea. ,.-~*´¨¯¨`*·~-.¸-(_MEA_)-,.-~*´¨¯¨`*·~-.¸
If Jaal is the guy with the monocle then look at his armour collar. Looks familiar? Imagine, two galaxies apart coming up with the same idea.
Yeah... Exactly the kind of things I was afraid of...

Seeing both male and female angaran makes me happy that we aren't seeing a repeat of just one gender per species like in ME1, before eventually trickling in the other genders of the alien species game by game, DLC by DLC.
