It doesn't go against ME's internal consistency because ME has consistently had some characters wearing breathers as the only protection against environmental hazards ever since ME1. It would be inconsistent if they didn't continue to do so in MEA!

The codex states that shields don't protect agains extremes of temperature and neither against harzardous atmosphere, you need amor for that, they only protect against high velocity impact. Also the "drop pods" are used to recharge the energy for the life suport system inside the Nomad and the eva suit/armor.
It's a damn suspension of disbelief situation, hence why i dislike the blasted breathers.
Shields, as in Kinetic Barriers, would logically only protect against projectiles and physical force but that doesn't mean it's the only kind of protection that a shield emitter can produce.
We know that force fields can keep out a vacuum as we've seen examples of shuttle bays open to space with Shuttles flying in and out. Or the Citadel, for that matter, which is clearly open to space.
There is nothing in the Lore that says that suits can't project a force field to filter out radiation or to hold in atmosphere and if they can hold in atmosphere they can hold in heated atmosphere from the suit heaters.
I don't see it as a suspension of disbelief at all merely an extrapolation of known tech.
I bought Horizon Zero Dawn knowing that I would not finish it immediately. Why? The answer is simple.

it's no extrapolation, here a direct quote from the codex:
Kinetic barriers, colloquially called "shields", provide protection against most mass accelerator weapons. Whether on a starship or a soldier's suit of armor, the basic principle remains the same. Kinetic barriers are repulsive mass effect fields projected from tiny emitters. These shields safely deflect small objects traveling at rapid velocities. This affords protection from bullets and other dangerous projectiles, but still allows the user to sit down without knocking away their chair. The shielding afforded by kinetic barriers does not protect against extremes of temperature, toxins, or radiation.
So the idea that PeeBee's jacket is able to protect her against the heat generated from close proximity to lava is bizarre.
But i will stop here. Nothing can be accomplished by my complains, since Bioware already brought back the rule of cool from ME2...

The devs said they wanted to make Peebee feel like this space Indiana Jones, with her outfit and all. Heres the problem: Indiana Jones wouldnt be able to go to the moon wearing only his leather jacket anda breathmask, that would make the "hide in the fridge from nuke" scene seem realistic in comparison.

Seriously though, I gotta say that I never really thought about the masks vs. helmet issue until recently. I only played ME3 so I didn't really pay attention to it one way or the other. Now that I've seen the arguments on it, I can already tell that the mask thing is something that'll bug me. I'll have to head-cannon it if they don't address it in-game. Meh.
