If this is the hill I am going to die on, so be it. Fact of the matter is article is as pretentious at its core, especially when comparing ME3 to to endings of other games or mediums. Endgame was more satisfying than ME3 as a frame of reference.
You can't just dismiss the opposite viewpoint entirely. "Fact of the matter"? Nothing factual about it. To the author of that (non-)article, ME3's conclusion was as epic and satisfying as he writes. He liked it! You didn't, and I didn't, but that's okay. We can have different opinions, but we have to respect those that feel differently from us. This stubborn attitude about others being objectively wrong does no one any good, I guarantee you.
Anyway, I'll leave this thread to its tweets and more relevant discussions now. The choice of words just rubbed me the wrong way, reminding me of a darker time for this fandom.

On the other hand, telling people to "get over it" is still not going to work. It's been 7 years. If you haven't got over it in 7 years, you're not getting over it, at this point. The fact that Bioware has failed to further meet expectations since then, according to reviewers, at the very least, not to mention EA's own sales projections, has not even offered them with a suitable substitute. If this divide can be healed, it's in the hands of Bioware to fix, at this point. If they can act on it, good. If they don't, well, I don't want to see how that goes.

Jo Berry @joanna_Berry The question of "should we give the player everything they want?" is something I've thought about lately in terms of how people approach role-playing games, and what they expect out of them.
Some players view it literally: a role-playing game should be an experience where they inhabit and play to a specific role. They make choices accordingly and accept the restrictions that are placed on that role--either gameplay, plot direction, or romance.
Another approach is that an RPG's world and characters should support any decision that you make--romance anyone, do everything, go everywhere--regardless of the role you've chosen. (i.e. I shouldn't get locked out of content because I made a particular choice.)
My feeling is that to be meaningful, a choice has to be an actual *choice*. Characters should have their own agency to disagree with your decisions. There should be consequences and not just reactivity, and that will necessarily mean that some doors get closed.
(Quick definition of terms:) Reactivity = I killed the wicked king so now characters refer to me as Kingslayer and they discuss what happened. Consequences = because I killed the king, I can't swear loyalty to the new prince and the royal guard I was romancing broke up with me.
Yes, that does sacrifice the power fantasy because you can't do everything without consequences. Some games play to that very well. But in a world where characters have opinions and agency, and your actions have weight, you should be weighing those facts in your choices.
When I was working on the clash between Kallo and Gil in MEA, and their argument in the conference room, I was asked: "is there a third path, something additional I can do, so I can end that scene with both of them happy?"
My answer: No. By design.
That moment was not about making everyone happy. It was about Ryder being presented with two opposing POVs, neither one specifically right or wrong, and needing to be the captain and make a call--one that might involve siding against a friend or even a love interest.
Do you side with the argument you agree with, or the character you like? How do you feel about someone disagreeing with your decision? Do you even have an opinion, or is this just a speed bump to shooting stuff that you skip through?
All things to consider.
But if there's just a secret Path to Happiness, if the player character is always right, then all those considerations go away. Maybe that's what you want--just to hang out with characters you like, and that's fine. But role-playing games offer a unique chance to examine not just *what* you choose, but *why* you choose. What matters to you more--being moral, being liked, having cool stuff? Are you focused on the long-term, the short-term, what people think of you, what your character can live with?

I agree, I never sided with Kallo but after he draws the designs and shows Gill there is clearly a peace process taking place in the conversation/dialogue.

To be completely blunt, the stakes here were incredibly low and the moment struck me as meandering. She seems to put it up against something like the ME2 companion conflicts that all have a persuade-out scenario and how this does not, but we also aren't charging into hell and it's not like Kallo holds Gil at gunpoint. It's two people in some petty disagreement over what the other one thinks there's a lack of actual personal tension in that moment. I still appreciate the idea that by design you sometimes intentionally leave out the optimal outcome but from a roleplaying standpoint, if Mass Effect 2 asked me to choose between Jack and Miranda for the sole reason that it was by design and the author wanted one or the other to be favored well, then the roleplaying fails and you don't simply accomplish not providing a power fantasy. The power you need to persuade in RPG is not really a fantasy... sometimes it is, by scenario, but most of the time you earned your power through playing the game a certain way and as far as that game's own version of reality goes you're not in a fantasy, you're playing by the rules set by the reality you're interacting with.
EDIT: SERIOUSLY fix the "Mark and quick-quote" feature. It's bugged and I just had to edit out a page-long clusterfuck because of how it performs.
Has anyone asked the Bioware guys (and gals!) on twitter if there are any new books/comics coming out for Mass Effect? They could easily keep fleshing out the series with novels.

I'd love to know too, but I doubt anything Mass Effect will happen in the next year or two (focus on Anthem service, releasing Dragon Age, and getting any reasonable start on Mass Effect if they ever do).
