I'm not convinced that it bit them in the butt at the time. The ME3 shitstorm mostly happened after people bought the game. The DAI launch (despite fetch quests and weaker endgame) was by most a 'return to form' with 134 GOTYs. Huge sales for both games. I think ME3's legacy will always be controversial. DAI did as well critically as they could dream of (I still think learning to build in Frostbite was more of an issue than they admit) Going into MEA marketing launch, the legacy of the ME3 shitstorm is there, so from November I'm expecting a huge charm offensive.

That wouldn't be as bad as you might think. But I think that people that are pissed off about the game, four years after, will always be pissed.
I think that you're absolutely correct about building a world in FB3. Also, though, they had to build it on 5 platforms.

How exactly did marketing oversell Suicide Squad? <<<<<<<<<<<<(0)>>>>>>>>>> The oversell is from the "prefessional" critics who excoriated the movie. To me the movie failed to meet the promo expectations. However, I will be the first to say that what the critics mention about a movie and what the audience say can be diametrically opposites. In this case, the "greater unwashed" loved it.

Well, they need to do something. I'm expecting a game magazine article that paints the game in 8k technicolour and a super enhanced HD trailer. But, will it contain actual game footage?

I don't care about reviews or such. Marketing for me must be so constructed that I know what the game is and what it's about. I will decide whether or not to buy it.
But in the case of ME:A? I will certainly buy it. Just because of my love in the series and ofc there will be some things that will be frustrating (like DA:I) but I know I will love it anyway and accept the game as it is.

I am at this point. Mass Effect 3 bit them hard because of the myriad of folks who kept quoting the developers left and right about the game, the endings, etc. Some of it was misleading, some of it was not, but the point was people felt pissed by how they marketed the game. Which in truth, if you go by how much you like a game based on its marketing I think you have an issue, but lets move on from that point. You noticed how contracted and controlled the marketing for Inquisition was in that regard? This is what I mean by managing expectations; they tried to control what to expect from the game, but it sort of bit them in the ass there too because of pre-alpha footage getting out and showing off parts of the game that were cut, to even having people mine the bios of companions for information and complaints because of how they were presented. Underwhelming for some maybe, critical darling for others sure, the mixed legacy of Inquisition, (which I got to admit, I don't agree with) is still kind of there. I think the problem here is we are seeing BioWare basically clam up to manage those expectations. I don't expect a media blitz in November, but I do expect information to be released over time, and it will be small things like showing off gameplay, some characters/squad mates, planets and the mako, some activities here and there, and multiplayer. As for Mass Effect 3 and it's own legacy, BioWare has more or less already did something about that by going to Andromeda in the first place, so I think there is a bit of managing expectations there too. Nothing big on the story, nothing big on the

In this case, the "greater unwashed" loved it. Professional critics are not marketing the movie. To oversell the movie marketing would need to represent it in a way which is false, either including important scenes in trailers that are not in the movie (like King kong) or dramatically change the tone in the trailers (life of Pi, trailer was feel good inspiration, movie was depressing especially after the twist). There was absolutely nothing in Suicide squad that could be considered unrepresentative marketing as far as I am concerned. Trying to say your product is good is in no way overselling by marketing. Saying the game will take a player 100 hours to complete where you can skip 90 hours of fetch quests and mako driving is an oversell. They should rather say that by the game can take over 100 hours if you complete all optional content (and play slowly). You are not really talking about marketing at all in this thread. You are talking about expectations. Yes, if the product quality does not meet expectations it generally gets a more negative response than if the expectations were originally low. You could say this thread has been oversold

I'm also not sure how you can over hype something.. Lie yes and thats a different problem, but mostly you don't see marketing people outright lying. There are laws about that and they are applied.
But the certainly the Suicide Squad marketing was very much what you saw is what you got. I can see complaining if the only trailer you see plays like a romantic comedy and is actually a violent foulmouth superhero movie (Deadpool I'm looking at you, but you get a pass because that was awesome) but mostly I really have never encountered a movie or game that didn't give me what it said on the box.

Well, this is the way that I feel about it. BioWare has always done its own marketing. Made sense, because there were a large portion the general population out there that wanted these kinds of games. However, it was still a niche market. As time has gone on though, they've seen their numbers rise, and get out of control of the niche market (no matter the size) that they had.
So they turned to EA for help with marketing of their game. Not saying that they hadn't done so before, but this time they wanted to get it right. This is Mass Effect for god's sake. So, the EA/BioWare marketing people are playing buddy buddy right now.

I think it wise to always expect hyperbole in marketing.
ME3's controversy was a perfect storm of very emotionally invested fans, developers who either lied or didn't think through what they said, and a tone deaf marketing machine.
They're trying to be more reserved with MEA, though I expect a marketing blitz and some footage of the game's start at the least. They know that have to win back some fans and draw in new ones by assuring them this is still Mass Effect, but without what they hated in ME3.

Both cover art pages, one from Jemisin book and the other from an XBOX article (see Cover Art thread) show the same guy in the same armour. One armour is covered in dust (from the first bideo trailer).
Now, some BSNu members have suggested the art is just place holders. That may be so, but, Bio must gave given the green light. Whatever it is, Bio, by those art covers is marketing its game, showing a N7 character.
Is this misleading advertising? After, all, if I see this guy in the cover art, I also expect to see him in the game.
