Still working my way through my first play through...
For my party and for the time being we've suspended action in The Fallow Mire and have since left that area long behind.
Sloshing about the marshes by night through drumming rain was not at all fruitless. I can still remember how impressive and somewhat foreboding the Avvar outpost looked when we finally came upon it. Even in the dark its jutting bulk forced the party to halt at a distance and peer upon its looming blackened facade. I was not expecting such a place. Took me by surprise and I couldn't wait to get inside. We were expecting a larger force to resist us once through the gate. We tore through the fodder set up there and then quickly annihilated their leader. Cassandra was on the receiving end of a really nice piece of gear from the fallen protagonist we cut down. Even now, with the events of The Fallow Mire behind us by some ways, she still swings the weapon gained at the outpost.
With the soldiers rescued and released and nearly every minor thing completed we set out to take as much of these lands as we could. Very quickly our intentions were met by fierce rejection. Heading back through the marshes we spied the unmistakable phosphorous green wisp like light swirling from the second Rift in the Mire. Glad to have sought it out we confidently closed the distance and fell upon the forms the Rift spewed into the world. Within moments the party was in grave danger of being utterly routed. We broke off the first skirmish, retreated, regrouped and went back in. After several attempts and all our potions used up we fled the fight for the time being.
Upon learning that Widris was located somewhere on the other side of the Rift we reluctantly gave up trying to find him. Deciding to close action in The Fallow Mire we returned to the safety of more familiar places where we upgraded gear and took rest.
Since then we've sporadically worked over tasks in the Hinterlands. The Grey Warden Blackwell has joined our party. That reminds me... When in The Fallow Mire we came across a creature in heavy armour. He did not resist us and eventually agreed to join the Inquisition. Yet, I've not since encountered him. I think he was a Water something or perhaps that was part of his name? Straight away I really liked this guy. Next chance to change my party I'll check to see if he is there abouts.
As it is Blackwell now makes up the numbers alongside Sera, Cassandra and I. More recently, still in the Hinterlands, we've made two intriguing discoveries. Firstly and more by accident than planning we happened upon a huge yellow Dragon. Foolishly we tried to take him. Like hapless fools the Dragon dismantled our efforts and consigned us to running at full pelt in any direction that led us away from him. This scrambling and running for our necks led us serendipitously to Red Cliffe. It has been my private inclination to seek out the Mages first and hear their side of things before contacting the Templars. Red Cliffe delivered this very opportunity. BUT!! I was stunned and disturbed to learn that not all those gathered at Red Cliffe were aware we'd been given an invitation at Val Royeaux to visit them. Upon learning the Tevinter's were pushing their weight around I found myself feeling really uneasy. I do not trust the situation at Red Cliffe. This development is so freaking awesome!!
We will stick around the Castle and take our time finding out what we can. I admit, I have a very strong desire to contact the Templars. Yet, I believe wisdom prevents too hasty a rejection of the things happening at Red Cliffe because not enough is yet known nor understood. I just don't like nor trust the head of the Mages from Tevinter. The militarization of the Mages mobilized for parochial reasons doesn't sit easy with me. Then again, I realise I have bought in to my main task heavily... To help the Inquisition against the hole in the sky and prove my innocence. It has become the singular thing by which I identify myself. They are the parameters by which i govern my thinking within the game. This too perhaps limits my ability to recognise the plight of other groups?? Red Cliffe has spun unexpected material upon my journey.
Also, an aside but one I've thought on whilst roaming the Hinterlands... It concerns Widris, the Mage in The Fallow Mire whom from the scant information I have on him seems suspiciously on the brink of losing his marbles for pushing too far into his craft and losing perspective. When I eventually find him, I suspect a confrontation may ensue. I fear that his views and mine will polarised and force a fight. But...I don't know this dude. I don't know what kind of threat he might be if he is a threat at all. I'm wondering if I can spare him and leave him to his pursuits?? It is my choice after all.

Canon. DAO Sten is presently the Arishok. He appeared in DA Those Who Speak and met up with Alistair again. In DAI, if Varric and IB are in the same party, they may talk about DAO Sten, the Arishok with no horns.
Most of my PT have the canon world state, as far as I know, with Alistair as the King, Anora the queen, the warden recruited DAO Sten and became friends, the GB existed. I think in the canon WS, the warden is dead but that is something I disagree with. I remember that banter but didn't connect it to DAO Sten. Do they ever come up with reasons why some Qunaris have horns and others don't? Also, what about DAO Sten's contention that "women don't fight"? In Trespasser, it seems the Qunari rogues were all women as was the Vidasala. A bit annoying when the lore isn't consistent. DAO Sten was originally supposed to have horns but there were graphic issues so it was left out. Or so the devs said. *shrug* Qunari, the word, does not refer to the race with horns. It's a name for people who follow the Qun. So Gat, even though he's an elf, is a Qunari because he follows the Qun. DAO Sten, since he has no horns, is likely a human.

I don't want to put out any spoilers that will ruin it for you, but regarding the large Avvar warrior you recruit in the Fallow Mire - his name is Sky Watcher - you don't really see him again and he doesn't become a playable companion. As an agent, you will see his name pop up under Inquisition Perks in the War Table room. Sky Watcher will fall under Connections. Agents count as perks and this is good because some perks require you to have 3 or more perks in that category before you can choose them. ("deft hands" perk for example.) REcruiting a bunch of agents is a good alternative to using up the opportunities you have to select a perk on perks you don't really need to get to the one you really want. (Let me know if that made absolutely no sense...) Regarding playable companions , there are a total of 3 warriors, 3 rogues and 3 mages that you can recruit. If you think you're missing someone, let us know.

Glad you mentioned it otherwise I would have wondered what had happened to him.

I'm pretty sure they just had an art change. Sten is not human, he is actually Kosith like the other horned ones. Just sometimes they are born without horns, there is now in game/in book support for this.

I swear I heard the chiming of clock bells, dogs barking and birds chirping while I was in the midst of tinting armor. Clock bells? I don't see no bells at Skyhold though I wouldn't put it to someone being appointed as the times keeper going about dinging hand held bells on the hour except that the chimes sounded too deep. As for dogs, there are no dogs.

Another note about Sky Watcher: if you play the multi-player at all, he's the unlockable character of the "Avvar" class. You don't technically have to recruit him in a playthrough to unlock him in multi-player, though.

But Sky Watcher would be fun to play as.

Finished my 3rd playthrough last night (250 hours as always) before Andromeda (just to get that bioware feelng and excitement) and i really feel nostalgic/empty/happy/sad combination. The journey man from beeing a nobody to inquisitor and then "Solas"... This game as all bioware games really gets into you. I feel like i accomplished something, i am kinda sad it ended although i wanted it to end. Like all bioware games the cast kinda become your friends (not i am not creepy )

WHOA!! I've just visited the Redcliffe Chantry. An unusual Mage was inside fighting a Rift. We helped him out and closed it and then the story just span in a whole new direction.
I wish I had some popcorn right now. I'm just really loving these developments.
The campy Mage took off after he and Felix told us about time control and other strange stuff. I was not expecting this.

OMFG .... Ok, first off, I'm doing Trespasser for this PT. * I realised why I didn't get Dorian's crystal in the PT where the elven Inq romanced Solas. I probably forgot to talk to him as I might have been under the impression that the first chat with him, while he was with the Orlesian ambassador, was the companion chat. In this PT, I made sure to make a second pass at all the companions to ensure that they have nothing more to say and I got the cutscene. * The first eluvian pass went without a hitch. It's a smooth transition, party selection came up, so that means I won't be getting any glitches. * Cass is divine and I got a shock when I saw her Divine armor. WTF?! I don't recall seeing it on her in previous Trespasser PTs which was like a year ago. Or was it two years ago. *shrug* * So I visited Cullen first. The Inq and he got married. I like the elven vows ... pity I have no idea what she said. I presumed it's along the lines of I take you as my mate / husband / partner, forever faithful loving something something. Visit Cass after and I'm pleased to see an extra line popped up. As I see it, I'm going to have the Inq keep the Inquisition under the Divine. While disbanding means she and the loyal party would be able to sweep under Solas's radar, they won't have the manpower and resources to prepare for what is to come. Under Cass, they would still be able to try to fashion some form of shelter / protection for the populace even if they don't know how and when the chaos would erupt. They could make some guesses, based on Solas's intentions, and try their best. It'd be worse if they don't.

Hi good folks.
So, here is my five years too late “I’ve just finished the DA2, and…” I am going to try for concise and brief, but that’s hard!
First of all, thanks to this board for guidance without spoilers! I feel that Revel’s play-through turned out perfect in terms of the story and character development.
I did not look at the last save’s clock, because the game crashed instead of going into subtitles after the last custcene with Cassandra and Leliana. At a guess, I ended up in low 30’s.
Plot:
Slight cheesiness with possession aside (and a rather sudden flip with Orsino that I did not quite get), the plot was extremely well-laid out, and the connections and foretells were all there. It’s probably the first video-game where I got who is who, and who is doing what and why right away, without the replays. The moral & philosophical theme of the inner demons was all there. The companions were tied into the theme, and each presented a take on the issue. Well done, BioWARE!
Companions:
Very strong, but slightly uneven development in Act 3, with a sudden and heavy emphasis on Aveline. Not that I’ve minded it, but other companions felt sidelined in comparison, even Anders.
Anders’ story and character was exceptional for me, and I am glad that the decision was made to make the character player-sexual, because the romance adds a strong dimension to his eventual act of nihilism. In the time and place I grew up, he’s as close as it gets to the heroes of my girl-dreams (yeah, I did not grew up with movie actors/pop-stars as my trial cases for sighs, I grew up with a laundry list of angsty revolutionaries who lived crazy, burned for the cost, and died young, mainly executed). I know it is a fantasy game, so Justice’s addition was the ‘fantasy’ element there, but to be honest, his story would have been even more poignant as a strictly human story.

Varric’s role as a fond story-teller is fantastic. If Anders is the game’s life-blood, Varric is its beating heart.
My biggest complaint is that nobody ever uses PC’s name in the dialogues, but I guess that’s because the subtitles are optional, and something they started doing once they went with full voicing.
Family Connections:
I think they did not go far enough for how many characters they introduced in the Hawke clan. Liandra’s death was almost glossed over. I expected the cutscene that went through all the companion reactions, or mentions from each of them. The Uncle Gamlen subplot in Act 3 was equally weak. Bethany as a bargaining chip was slightly better.
Overall, for forcing the protagonist to be a part of a specific family, they did not use it to its full potential, so it's neither here, nor there. They almost had me at Liandra, but I still prefer no family protagonist way, way, way more.
Combat Roles vs Story-importance:
Three available mages, three available fighters, and two available rogues… bad for business; basically a set-up that favors the main as a rogue, which I did play, and enjoy. Yes, I get it that Bethany and Carver become unavailable very soon, but given Bethany’s plot prominence, I would have almost just went with sister-mage no matter what, made her unavailable asap and skipped Carver. Given how well the companions play into the story, Bethany/Carver interferes with the other guys’ plot participation. I know, I have not seen the reasons Isabela is there, but I am sure she contributes her two sovereigns. Two of each would have been perfect for the game of this length, and gear distribution, providing that each class has two distinctive specs.
Combat:
Overall, I am not fond of the combat system, that is an awkward hybrid of an action system with pause, point and click. By level 20, I was also getting abilities overload.
Warriors, imo, got a short end of the stick in terms of cool gameplay, they are really slow, boring and their animations are meh (but I did not main a warrior, just base this awesome opinion on Fenris and Aveline).
The overload of the waves of enemies makes it hard to appreciate the combat, because at times, the battlefield is completely messy with adds. It does keep you on your toes, but it’s neither a solid trinity game, nor it is a DPS race. Messy.
I ended up playing mostly on Normal, and had to drop to Casual for a few battles, and that’s probably as good as I could manage, even if I tried my uttermost. Hats off to anyone playing on harder settings. Unlike Mass Effect, I do not feel the need to increase the difficulty setting every subsequent play-through, as I feel it is just going be frustrating, not fun.
Crafting/Gearing:
What crafting? By the time the game ended, I still did not have enough ingredients to craft a single thing, despite picking up each available gathering spot. Consequently, I have used the runes I could pick in the earlier weapons I then replaced, and since they could not be removed once inserted… annoying.
Second Play-through:
I feel that Revel is my canon run, perfect for the story-line, gay rogue, deeply in love with Anders and throwing his lot with Bethany and him. I felt he should have laughed in Meredith face when asked to choose a side. Here Revel stands, robbed by war of all his family, save for his mage-sister, and openly a lover to a mage who blew up the Chantry…. Do you truly think he’s going to destroy the last of what he has in the world in the name of anything? I should have tried harder to move Fenris… erm… Leto (oh, how Obsidian of you, BioWARE) to a rivalry track, but excuse me for my inability to resist the need to comfort the visiting JRPG angst-onslaught.
I am going to try a second play-through with an inverse character, a Mage who is single-mindedly committed to Fenris, rivals Anders, believe she is special, and all other mages should be eliminated or committed (I guess she is a total hypocrite), and (gods help me) will try to swap Varric for Isabela (eww). I think to her will fall the mother-of-all tough decisions, executing Anders.

A pretty interesting analysis. I disagree with a lot of your points, but we don't need to turn this topic into a big philosophical debate on any of that, so I'll just enjoy how someone could get something so completely different from a game in terms of content compared to how I felt, despite both enjoying the game.
Only thing I'll comment on since it's more of a gameplay thing is your feeling like a Rogue was the most vital role for Hawke to fill...for me, I basically never let Varric leave my group, so he can handle most of my Rogue-ing for me anyway, so that class felt particularly redundant to me, if anything.

WHOA!! I've just visited the Redcliffe Chantry. An unusual Mage was inside fighting a Rift. We helped him out and closed it and then the story just span in a whole new direction. I wish I had some popcorn right now. I'm just really loving these developments. The campy Mage took off after he and Felix told us about time control and other strange stuff. I was not expecting this. Τhat unsual mage is meant to be one of bioware's best for me. Inquisition in general has some pretty milestone characters. you are nearing the point where your PANTS/BREECHES/SOCKS are about to be blown off

Varric was a mainstay in my party as well, and he never felt redundant, but I could swap him for Merrill any time, even Anders until his healer tree became a full fledged role. DPS is DPS.... but I already foresee all the troubles I will have in choosing between Carver and Fenris on my Mage, as they are exact duplicates. And, should I have played a warrior, I'd have to pick Aveline or Fenris as my duplicate, and Bethany will be competing with Merrill. If I pursue healing, Anders and Merrill will be wanting the same slot in the party. I am not that fond of equipping all the companions tbh. I'd rather sell the excess, and buy better gear for Hawke at the emporium, or solve the mystery of the crafting ingredients source with gold. Edit: and, yes, absolutely, we all see in the game the reflection of what we are. I have a fairily uncommon background, having been born and raised in a rather odd time and place in the world history, so my views often differ from other folks. I embrace these differences.

Yes, with Riya, I was already at the Winter Palace (with the steampunk dress). But I took Blackwall with me in my last playthrough. My rogue Lyana romanced him and you are right, there was one guy, who almost recognised him. I like Blackwall as a character, but if he tries to impersonate someone from a specific group, he should try and find out as much about this group, as he can. Ok, admittedly, that could have been a bit of a problem in the case of the GW, but I think, he could have tried to find out a bit more at least
Iona may need to borrow the steampunk dress! lol With Blackwall, I have this feeling that after the real Blackwall was killed, Thom assumed his identity and went around freelancing by himself without any contact with other Grey Wardens. Without any mentor, how was he to find out all those dark GW secrets? He has this vision of the GWs as altruistic heroes without any of the real details. He can get away with this because the general public doesn't know the GWs' secrets either. He's safe so long as he doesn't run into any real GWs. Riya would gladly lend her steampunk dress to Iona About Blackwall: I guess, you are right, he probably didn't have many ways to find out more about the wardens. I think, I will make him a warden this time in Riyas playthrough, he might like that. phorayI didn't find the banter that bad (probably because I had Sebastian in that group too and him constantly trying to convert Fenris was the most annoying thing in the whole game, nightly bandit groups and big spiders included) I didn't do anything really in the DA universe, but I ordered an omnibus with all DA comics, so I can finally catch up with the reading. Next might be Asunder, I'm purely chosing for favorite protagonists and teh comics have Varric and Isabella and Asunder Wynne and Cole . I will probably read the other novels too

@domi I'm glad you liked DA2. Playing as a mage is fun too, my favorite in any game will always be the rogue, but in DA2 (and DAI) mages are fun too. Isabella is a great character and if you play on pc, you could use the 'diverse followers armor' and equip her with somethng decent (as I normally do first thing, when I get her). Her banter is funny and she isn't nearly as shallow as she likes everyone to believe. I like swapping companions around for more banter variety and you can do great with two rogues in the group, if you really want to keep Varric. I did the Feynriel quest and the Tal Vashoth with three rogues and a mage and it went really well. Have fun with the next playthrough

If I don't really feel attached to her, and the game feel too much the same-y, I will just take a Vanguard through ME2/ME3 & play ME3MP after I am back on my home rig with my beloved Razer mouse. OMG, I am going to play on the left hand for two days... I have not done it in a few months now. I think she will be very much like Merrill in attitude, thinking she is an exception among the mages, and all other mages are dangerous (save for her BFF Merrill) and Fenris is hawt, therefore he must be right. She herself will be very shallow, so maybe Isabela as a frenemy will make sense.

Hi good folks. So, here is my five years too late “I’ve just finished the DA2, and…” I am going to try for concise and brief, but that’s hard! First of all, thanks to this board for guidance without spoilers! I feel that Revel’s play-through turned out perfect in terms of the story and character development. I did not look at the last save’s clock, because the game crashed instead of going into subtitles after the last custcene with Cassandra and Leliana. At a guess, I ended up in low 30’s. Plot: Slight cheesiness with possession aside (and a rather sudden flip with Orsino that I did not quite get), the plot was extremely well-laid out, and the connections and foretells were all there. It’s probably the first video-game where I got who is who, and who is doing what and why right away, without the replays. The moral & philosophical theme of the inner demons was all there. The companions were tied into the theme, and each presented a take on the issue. Well done, BioWARE! Companions: Very strong, but slightly uneven development in Act 3, with a sudden and heavy emphasis on Aveline. Not that I’ve minded it, but other companions felt sidelined in comparison, even Anders. Anders’ story and character was exceptional for me, and I am glad that the decision was made to make the character player-sexual, because the romance adds a strong dimension to his eventual act of nihilism. In the time and place I grew up, he’s as close as it gets to the heroes of my girl-dreams (yeah, I did not grew up with movie actors/pop-stars as my trial cases for sighs, I grew up with a laundry list of angsty revolutionaries who lived crazy, burned for the cost, and died young, mainly executed). I know it is a fantasy game, so Justice’s addition was the ‘fantasy’ element there, but to be honest, his story would have been even more poignant as a strictly human story. Generally, I've never understood the "Cult of Anders" among female DA2 players, but in your case, it makes sense given your "revolutionary" perspective! (By contrast, I've always played my Hawkes like the sheriff in those old Westerns who's forever trying to keep the cattle ranchers and the sheep herders from killing each other.) As to the plot, there are some major issues in that third act. Whether you choose to help the mages or the Templars, you end up fighting a group of Templars and mages who are working together. Shouldn't that be the kind of group you want to be a part of? (Assuming you're not an extreme, mage-hating Templar, of course.) Regarding crafting, armor, and gear, DA2 is rather annoying. You can't change out armor for companions and crafting is very limited. Inquisition, by contrast, allows you to craft armor, weapons, and runes from raw materials gathered in your travels, largely metals, cloth, and leather and some unusual items for rune-crafting. Your next planned PT sounds interesting. A mage isn't a natural fit for Fenris, but it can be done. And you're familiar, now, with all the key plot points and how they impact him favorably or unfavorably. Just curious, I remember you said you didn't recruit Isabela. Did she end up popping up later in the game?

No, Isabela's only presence in my game was a short cutscene when I entered the Hanging Man to talk to Varric. Then she moved to the corner with the exclamation mark. I did not talk to her, and she disappeared next time I came to the hanged man. The gear for her appeared in the stores. Other than that, there was no sign or mention of her at all. My understanding is that both Fenris and her just disappear from the game if you do not recruit them.
heh, yes, I think I have a good idea about Fenris' affections. I think I might even pull off friendship with Merrill while at it. When he walks out on her, Blaze would pout and do everything Merrill wants and asks for, that mirror can't be eviel... because she is her only friend in the whole world (sniffle, sniffle, sniffle)....

Inquisition, by contrast, allows you to craft armor, weapons, and runes from raw materials gathered in your travels, largely metals, cloth, and leather and some unusual items for rune-crafting.
Your next planned PT sounds interesting. A mage isn't a natural fit for Fenris, but it can be done. And you're familiar, now, with all the key plot points and how they impact him favorably or unfavorably.
Just curious, I remember you said you didn't recruit Isabela. Did she end up popping up later in the game? Of course it makes sense, and only on this way (my opinion). What else? Bethany closed in the Gallows... so easy to understand Anders in this circumstances. And as mage? Of course easy to understand Anders. Who want to be a pariah? But if Hawke's not a revolutioner, Bethany dead, or Grey Warden, so "in safe", or Hawke blind, and trust in Meredith's benevolence, then can't see Anders' reasons, so: Anders just a murderer, a liar, and an Abomination, a monster. The question how possible to live with someone, who only a liar murderer monster in his/her eyes? But the love can be just blind. Anders' romance the best, if Hawke share his passion toward the freedom. At any cost. And can accept Justice. Otherwise? Tragic. I think, the writers' intention was closer to your sheriff-kind concept.

A very good, thoughtful post! Generally, I've never understood the "Cult of Anders" among female DA2 players, but in your case, it makes sense given your "revolutionary" perspective! (By contrast, I've always played my Hawkes like the sheriff in those old Westerns who's forever trying to keep the cattle ranchers and the sheep herders from killing each other.) As to the plot, there are some major issues in that third act. Whether you choose to help the mages or the Templars, you end up fighting a group of Templars and mages who are working together. Shouldn't that be the kind of group you want to be a part of? (Assuming you're not an extreme, mage-hating Templar, of course.) Regarding crafting, armor, and gear, DA2 is rather annoying. Did she end up popping up later in the game? You know the reason, I used to like Anders? He looked a bit like a young Charles Dance, one of my favorite actors, and had nothing to do with the tormented possessed mage thingy (this, I find annoying tbh). But I moved on to Fenris and Isabella. And Fenris works surprisingly well as a romance for mage Hawke. If you choose friendship romance, he will shove you as a good example in every mages face, who isn't in his opinion (mainly Anders and Merrill of course). I didn't play the rivalmance yet.

Hi good folks. So, here is my five years too late “I’ve just finished the DA2, and…” I am going to try for concise and brief, but that’s hard! First of all, thanks to this board for guidance without spoilers! I feel that Revel’s play-through turned out perfect in terms of the story and character development. I did not look at the last save’s clock, because the game crashed instead of going into subtitles after the last custcene with Cassandra and Leliana. At a guess, I ended up in low 30’s.
Plot: Slight cheesiness with possession aside (and a rather sudden flip with Orsino that I did not quite get), the plot was extremely well-laid out, and the connections and foretells were all there. It’s probably the first video-game where I got who is who, and who is doing what and why right away, without the replays. The moral & philosophical theme of the inner demons was all there. The companions were tied into the theme, and each presented a take on the issue. Well done, BioWARE!
Companions: Very strong, but slightly uneven development in Act 3, with a sudden and heavy emphasis on Aveline. Not that I’ve minded it, but other companions felt sidelined in comparison, even Anders. Anders’ story and character was exceptional for me, and I am glad that the decision was made to make the character player-sexual, because the romance adds a strong dimension to his eventual act of nihilism. In the time and place I grew up, he’s as close as it gets to the heroes of my girl-dreams (yeah, I did not grew up with movie actors/pop-stars as my trial cases for sighs, I grew up with a laundry list of angsty revolutionaries who lived crazy, burned for the cost, and died young, mainly executed). I know it is a fantasy game, so Justice’s addition was the ‘fantasy’ element there, but to be honest, his story would have been even more poignant as a strictly human story. Aside from Anders, huge props to bioWARE for managing companions in a dignified way without making any of them obnoxious. Fenris casually informing Anders aboiut his intent to kill him, if he hurts Hawke, was sweet. Well, I did dodge Isabela, so the potential is there… Varric’s role as a fond story-teller is fantastic. If Anders is the game’s life-blood, Varric is its beating heart. My biggest complaint is that nobody ever uses PC’s name in the dialogues, but I guess that’s because the subtitles are optional, and something they started doing once they went with full voicing.
Family Connections: I think they did not go far enough for how many characters they introduced in the Hawke clan. Liandra’s death was almost glossed over. I expected the cutscene that went through all the companion reactions, or mentions from each of them. The Uncle Gamlen subplot in Act 3 was equally weak. Bethany as a bargaining chip was slightly better. Overall, for forcing the protagonist to be a part of a specific family, they did not use it to its full potential, so it's neither here, nor there. They almost had me at Liandra, but I still prefer no family protagonist way, way, way more.
Combat Roles vs Story-importance: Three available mages, three available fighters, and two available rogues… bad for business; basically a set-up that favors the main as a rogue, which I did play, and enjoy. Yes, I get it that Bethany and Carver become unavailable very soon, but given Bethany’s plot prominence, I would have almost just went with sister-mage no matter what, made her unavailable asap and skipped Carver. Given how well the companions play into the story, Bethany/Carver interferes with the other guys’ plot participation. I know, I have not seen the reasons Isabela is there, but I am sure she contributes her two sovereigns. Two of each would have been perfect for the game of this length, and gear distribution, providing that each class has two distinctive specs.
Combat: Overall, I am not fond of the combat system, that is an awkward hybrid of an action system with pause, point and click. By level 20, I was also getting abilities overload. Warriors, imo, got a short end of the stick in terms of cool gameplay, they are really slow, boring and their animations are meh (but I did not main a warrior, just base this awesome opinion on Fenris and Aveline). The overload of the waves of enemies makes it hard to appreciate the combat, because at times, the battlefield is completely messy with adds. It does keep you on your toes, but it’s neither a solid trinity game, nor it is a DPS race. Messy. I ended up playing mostly on Normal, and had to drop to Casual for a few battles, and that’s probably as good as I could manage, even if I tried my uttermost. Hats off to anyone playing on harder settings. Unlike Mass Effect, I do not feel the need to increase the difficulty setting every subsequent play-through, as I feel it is just going be frustrating, not fun.
Crafting/Gearing: What crafting? By the time the game ended, I still did not have enough ingredients to craft a single thing, despite picking up each available gathering spot. Consequently, I have used the runes I could pick in the earlier weapons I then replaced, and since they could not be removed once inserted… annoying.
Second Play-through: I feel that Revel is my canon run, perfect for the story-line, gay rogue, deeply in love with Anders and throwing his lot with Bethany and him. I felt he should have laughed in Meredith face when asked to choose a side. Here Revel stands, robbed by war of all his family, save for his mage-sister, and openly a lover to a mage who blew up the Chantry…. Do you truly think he’s going to destroy the last of what he has in the world in the name of anything? I should have tried harder to move Fenris… erm… Leto (oh, how Obsidian of you, BioWARE) to a rivalry track, but excuse me for my inability to resist the need to comfort the visiting JRPG angst-onslaught. I am going to try a second play-through with an inverse character, a Mage who is single-mindedly committed to Fenris, rivals Anders, believe she is special, and all other mages should be eliminated or committed (I guess she is a total hypocrite), and (gods help me) will try to swap Varric for Isabela (eww). I think to her will fall the mother-of-all tough decisions, executing Anders. Sorry for a long, long post! I like your post, especially what you wrote about Anders and the companions. I'm a bit sad, that you don't like Isabela, but I can't argue with taste. I think my warrior was similar than Revel. About Anders' "player sexuality" this solution was idiot a bit: to fem!Hawke, Anders don't speak about that Karl was his first love, this is why much people say (ofc, including me), that Anders better with m!Hawke (and because of some other little things). So: If you play just as Fem'Hawke, you will never know, that Anders is bisexual, but straight male players bothered about his angry response, if m!Hawke refuse his attraction (they got some rivalry). I think, this is a honest reaction, and fit him: he's quite sincere and jealous sometimes. And I can imagine, that many people dislike his character. I never tryed rivalry with him, just watched video: it's interesting, show more about Anders' work for rebellion, and Justice. This is the other side of the coin. Anders become uncertain and hopeless just as Awakening-Anders, but without his humour, and lost everything: his faith, his goal and his friend inside him become enemy, because he can't trust him anymore. And Anders does not assume any responsibility for the exploding. He don't want anything anymore, just die. I hate this. (Probably the rivalry path is the writers intention.)
