Well, the problem is, if melee is that painful, I need to reroll to a ranged asap. And I'd hate to lose my character's looks. Wish you could save it and use as a preset like in Blade and Soul...

You can spec her to archery. So, my first choice when I created her, the DW-rogue, can be remade without creating a new character? Archer is a rogue talent, I don't know, why they categorized in this way, if not only for the weapon in the first steps.

I have one, for the DMC series and similar games, what have terrible port. So: I dont think, that someone use mouse and keyboard will find comfortable the game controller, except some extreme cases. The Inquisition not bad in this, I think easy to control, but the DA2 was much easier.

Today, Iona, after humiliating Corypheus and sending him into oblivion the day before, is in the Frostback Basin in search of the body of the first Inquisitor. What she thought would be a nice, scenic, history field trip has been anything but! She and her companions have been roughly handled by some fur-clad Avvar barbarians known as the Hakkonites! What's with their archers who seem to get one shot kills? Or their spell-binders with their infinite barrier? Yes, I'm on Nightmare with Trials. Is it this miserable without Trials? Looks like everyone needs to have Tier 4 armor crafted for them! Poor Iona may have to shed the Keeper Robes for something with more protection!

I use a gaming mouse, and I am completely comfortable with using it and love it. I am very comfortable with clustering my abilities in the Q-T, A-F and Z-V ranges of the keyboard, and using L.Shift to pause, and 1 through 6 on the mouse to shoot off the abilities (7 to 12 are less comfortable). However, the autolock on target with a forward scroll of a mouse wheel (that EVERY bio game lets you do, save for Jade Empire) is way, way, way more natural motion than the point-and-click lock on target or the TAB/Y they bound it to. Along with BioWARE's insistence in binding abilities in the 1 to 0 range by default, and giving the convenient buttons clustered around the AWSD to pointless options rather than the combat skills... it's like they have never used a keyboard before, lol. Apparently their 'strafe" Q/E does not do anything different from A/D. Two of the best keyboard buttons given to duplicates? get outta here! V bound to... look around when you can do it with a mouse? No binds on Z, X, C? F used for something dumb... I can't even recall what.
Okay, maybe I am playing weird and they know better, but as long as I can re-keybind my skills comfortably, I am fine. And *not* having the scroll key-bindable is the only real problem I have with their keybinds, and also that I cannot double key-bind, because sometimes it is convenient to have two different buttons for the same action.
I would have preferred however, that they did not make us to lock on to hit it and just let us hit what we see as we look at it like in Mass Effect.
EDIT: Regardless, I will try Dusk on a bow instead of melee, see if I like that more. I cut my fingers this morning too opening a can, so it's probably will be better all around as my right hand is so awkward right now.

Yes, they are terrible, but not as terrible as when the game launched. There is no auto-attack via mouse button UNLESS you are in tac-cam mode. You can use a key (I think I have it as R but I'm not sure if that is the default) for auto-attack. Keys can be rebound - I basically line up DAI to match the first two games (ie spacebar = pause, etc). Basic melee attacks are 50/50 whether you will hit your target. Power/ability melee attacks also sometimes whiff but are much more reliable. Ranged (archer or mage) is better by far (imo) than either. Once you are able to explore the village, visit the "store" at the blacksmith area to buy a respec amulet. The first one costs 1 gold, I think. Then you can switch your skills over to archery.

Sweat rolled off Elwyn's face as she struggled to control the pain. She tried not to curl up as Cass unbuckled the belt. The ties of the gambeson was more difficult to undo. Cass tried not to spat in annoyance when she fumbled. Speckles of darkness danced across Elwyn's eyes as another sharp flare of pain cut into her side.
"Almost there," Cass said grimly when Elwyn gave a painful wheeze. The loosen gambeson was tugged open. The tunic underneath was soaked with sweat. She pulled up the tunic gently. Seeping through the rent under the ribs was blood, the flesh around the wound was abnormally white, and a sickly looking yellowish pus. She wrinkled her nose at the familiar putrid smell of demon venom. "Solas."
Waiting for the summons outside the tent, the mage quickly came in with a basin, dropping the tent flap behind him to prevent curious eyes from looking in. His lips tightened when he saw the spread of the poison. "It has made some inroads but it has not spread too far yet. I can remove it." He looked at Elwyn. "This will hurt."
"Not any more than it is right now," she managed.
Solas nodded to Cass. "Hold her."
"Do you want a biter?" Cass asked as she shifted to lean over Elwyn.
"No."
"Now," Solas murmured as he moved to crouch over ELwyn's legs, his hands over the wound.
Grabbing Elwyn's shoulders, Cass bore down on her as magic flared. Needles seemed to stab into Elwyn's flesh. She would have wrenched away except that Cass's weight was holding her down, her legs couldn't move with Solas sitting on them. Stop it! Stop it! She wanted to scream at them. Something was digging into her, tearing her apart. She screamed.

Husband been giving me text updates on his playing:
Had to redo landsmeet because I didn't realize what counted as talking to Anora. Pulled it off (Alistair marrying Anora) the second time.
Did you know you can have a dialogue with one of the bodyguards in Redcliffe Castle before the battle?
The Riordan thing makes sense.
Alistair gives a different speech for Dwarves. Not "this man is a native of Ferelden", but a speech about Ferelden not being my home and me fighting with honor to defend it, anyways.
I did the Dark Ritual. I was leaning towards not doing it, but Morrigan explains it well and she seems sincere. ____ And then he took a nap. He will Kill the Archdemon tonight and has plans for Awakening and Witch Hunt since he romanced Morrigan and did the Dark Ritual

Damn, next time, maybe she should just use a Health Potion? Magic potions that heal everything? In which case, nobody need to be afraid of going into battles or fight against demons. I'm going with the premise that a higher tier demon is able to cast spells that sicken / poison people unlike the common wraiths.

I was mostly trying to get used to the game's controls, by having Dusk and Co fight through long-long battle during which she also had to periodically click on the rift. At least that's what I got from the instructions Cassandra was giving me... It took a looong time, but nobody died, so... yay? A quick snapshot of Dusk and Solas as the battle was starting. They don't know yet that they will be at it for a while... Then I mostly talked to the Team Inquisition. So very... modern. So very pale. So very sweaty. Cullen is disturbingly so. Had he been in the Dark Roads for a few months? Tainted? On the other hand, talking to Solas was nicer. I was glad I was able to flirt with him, but he is kind of like a pixie? Really short? I am guessing the mod is working, unless any race can flirt, just can't get them to respond in kind? Finally, I managed to find the craftsmen in the Haven Village, but suppressed the OCD desire to do the sidequests, though yes, yes, the MMO school made me gather iron, elfroot, loot everything everywhere and kill nugs. Why? Why? WHY? Okay, I stopped making circles, and traveled to Hinterlands. Met another really pale and perspiring character. Ouch, did the Blight gave everyone the great sickness? Still don't know if I like it, but so far it was better than I expected. Landscapes are better. Character art is really awkward. Matte, matte, please, matte... Overall? Cautiously optimistic? And, a screenshot of Dusk Fell with a pretty tree:

Have you begun crafting yet? Unfortunately, the shop selling Tier 1 schematics is in Redcliffe, which you may not be able to get into yet. When you go to Val Royeaux, there's a shop that sells more expensive Tier 2 schematics. Alternatively, I think Black Emporium sells Tier 1 schematics too. Solas is actually tall for an elf. Of course, the Qunari are just taller than everybody! They definitely made a mistake with the T1 shop at Redcliffe. By the time the player get over there, the schematics are useless because char level would have hit near level eight which is the goal line for T2 and there're better stuff at VR. Solas is well built too for a mage. Maybe he worked out. I'm not sure how tall he is because it's very hard to get an accurate estimation; you can't line every one up and compare. But I'm thinking present elves are perhaps smaller than the ancients due to present living conditions. Whether they live in the city or out in the wilds, the struggle to survive will hit the elves the hardest.

With one exception (when playing a female Cousland who ended up as Queen) I always made Alistair and Anora king and queen. If I remember correctly, when speaking with Anora prior to the Landsmeet, there is an answer from her like "Deal." which seals the bargain for supporting Alistair. Alistair changes his pre-Denerim speech to suit the origin of the Warden, and it`s always well received. Quite different from the usually fumbled Landsmeet one...

Husband final update on end of DAO: Gorim was at the final party to tell me that Harrowmont named me the heir to the Aeducan and restored my right to return to Orzammar. His too.Harrowmont had his usual troubles. Duran got named a Paragon. I asked him when he'd do Awakening and he said 1-2 weeks from now. I promised him a Zelda game plus associated console upon completion of the Trilogy to make sure he'd finish the series.

Finally, I managed to find the craftsmen in the Haven Village, but suppressed the OCD desire to do the sidequests, though yes, yes, the MMO school made me gather iron, elfroot, loot everything everywhere and kill nugs. Why? Why? WHY? Okay, I stopped making circles, and traveled to Hinterlands. Met another really pale and perspiring character. Ouch, did the Blight gave everyone the great sickness? Still don't know if I like it, but so far it was better than I expected. Landscapes are better. Character art is really awkward. Matte, matte, please, matte... Overall? Cautiously optimistic? And, a screenshot of Dusk Fell with a pretty tree: Have you begun crafting yet? Unfortunately, the shop selling Tier 1 schematics is in Redcliffe, which you may not be able to get into yet. When you go to Val Royeaux, there's a shop that sells more expensive Tier 2 schematics. Alternatively, I think Black Emporium sells Tier 1 schematics too. Solas is actually tall for an elf. Of course, the Qunari are just taller than everybody! Qunari are, so I do know I am playing a giant woman basically. But I just don't like it that elves in this instalment are more like loli/shotas from the Eastern games. I hope we are not going to see kawaii ear ornaments and tie-on tails on the elves next instalment, lol. My favorite take on the elves is in DA2. Alien, but not obviously different in height. Overall, I much prefer character art in DA2. I don't like how stock NPCs look like at all, and from plot characters, only Varric, leliana, Cassandra and Josephine looked good unmodded so far. And yes, I have read that guy's thread about how Cassandra and Josephine were ugly, and I don't see it that way. I do not want to do crafting. I clicked on the tables, and I really, really, really do not want to do it. I don't like crafting, I did too much of it, and it's a boring time sink. It's exactly like in MMO only without a peer Market. I want to loot for gear. Only loot. For me it is one of the basic draws of the SP games that you do NOT have to do chores, just play. Some folks do love hoarding possessions and decorating houses, etc, I do not.

The game's "no healing" is starting to rear its ugly head up. Why, Bioware, why? I want a healer...
Fight a battle, go a little bit forward. Return to camp. Start walking back to where we need to go. Yeah, i can see where 200 hrs of gameplay are coming from. The fights are so scattered, you can't see the full party, so who's taking hurt where, and it's hard to see the enemies. Yep, DA2 was much more fun. :(
Casandra takes tons of damage too in that starting purple armor (must be the cleavage and the unmatching helmet, lol), and spent an entire battle standing in some corner, and there was no way to bring her into the fight, even by my rogue bringing all the enemies to her. She was simply unresponsive, and did not care. I even tried switching the dreadful "tactical" mode on, and drawing that crazy arrow thing for her to move. Nope. Not a stir.
Now I have to fight as Cassandra, because my rogue seems to move into the fight just fine. So... no matter what you roll, fight as tank, or risk not having the tank?
Okay, okay, I am sure it's just a single fight and all that... but I guess, it will always be a good idea to move the tank in first, then follow.
Also: I can't talk to the companions in the camp? What? Camps where always the place the dialogues happen. So, I have to wait till I get to the next hub to talk? Quick travel back to Haven? Just to talk?

You know, I`m getting really tired of all these game studios trying to "increase the game difficulty" moron-style, by imposing totally imbecilic restrictions for players. I understood the idea of no healing AFTER combat in IWD and BG games (although there was that healing bard song for both Hearth of Winter and IWD 2) as part of the AD&D rule system. But DA has nothing to do with that system, and there was healing available BOTH during and after the fight in DA:O AND DA2. I spent a huge amount of time playing Pillars of Eternity with similar restrictions concerning healing. There is NO healing outside resting in the game, but there are TWO health related concepts: overall health and Endurance, which can be healed by priests during a fight. In order for the game to be more "tactical" (read stupid) they came up with a completely useless and aggravating fatigue system, with heavy penalties for fatigued characters. All well and good, but fatigue appeared not only as a result of just several fights but also after a longer travel. Meaning that the party arrived already fatigued in most new areas, and needed to rest asap. BUT rest was possible only with camping supplies, of which the party is able to carry a very limited amount, meaning many nonsense trips back to villages or towns with stores. Fortunately, Obsidian listened to fans and changed the idiotic fatigue system to something playable. Instead of devising such nonsense "tactical" devices, game studios should spend some time to develop a decent AI system...
