Julian (Tempest) had a dracolisk, the one you get from a wartable mission after slaying your first dragon. Demetria (Rift Mage) rode a giant NUG I wished she rode that during Trespasser's intro cutscene instead of the armoured mount! For my new Templar Inquisitor, Mattias, I think she'll ride the armoured mount.

Have fun Tbh I just had respecced Bruce before that fight and switched Barrier out for Dispel Edit: I use Guard on Hit on Greed's armor, but he's a Reaver, he needs it. Bruce has Immolate on his staff and 5 x Hidden Blades on his armor.

Did you take some photos in the Fallow Mire? Scarier place with all the thunder and lightning. Mattais' character is going to be a bit like Knight Commander Merideth and Cullen from DA 2. For Cullen in DAI, it'll feel like he's seeing a mirror of what he used to be (ie.despising Mages and lyrium addiction). That'll give him problems.

DAO
Tested some things against Loghain in the Landsmeet fight (predominantly with Leliana).
Then I went back to my archer character Garrus. I wasn't planning to make this a solo character when I created it, but I changed my mind before combat began in the origin. Anyway, just took care of a few little things in Lothering, clearing out the "toll collectors" and then picking up Leliana and Sten.
I actually did the above parts of Lothering twice since I failed a steal attempt and didn't think about it until Traps are a Girl's Best Friend couldn't start... I wasn't planning on giving her more than 3 traps but the obsessive part of me can't leave a quest undone.

Finally got back to my DAO game today. Cleared Soldier's Peak and gave Avernus carte blanche to research to his little heart's content. First time I've gone that route. Alistair didn't even disapprove. She also drank the potion. Since this is my first post for this PT in this forum, here's my Warden, Diana Mahariel, rogue archer. So far she left Sten in the cage, told Leliana to get lost (twice!), told Morrigan to get lost, recruited Shale, and told Wynne to stay at the Circle. She left Redcliffe to its own devices since Teagan offered no help whatsoever, and cleared the Circle tower of demons in order to recruit the mages to the cause. Next stop is Denerim but I need to add Stealing first so I can do all the Slim Couldry quests. Zevran's trap should spring next time I travel anywhere so hopefully that will give me enough XP to level up. I maybe better take a re-spec potion just in case.....

I came home with enthusiasm to write and maybe even play!
Then spent an hour formatting the dwarf thread over on DAF. (It's finally not doing stupid stuff! Although I confirmed that the site was not deleting stuff I told it to delete, because I deleted the same spoiler tag three times. Glad it wasn't just me being a failure at code.)
I've been listening to this
On repeat! But I have a tendency to do that with music I like. (remembers driving husband nuts with Zombie love song.)
Now I'm a gonna write!
I guess I'm just going to cross post my current PT:
This is my first Dalish character. The goal of playing Dalish, for me, is to understand them better and attempt a Solasmance I can stand-- I tried one and deleted it as I had no sense of who I was supposed to be. I realized I couldn't play my first Dalish in Inquisition; it just doesn't give you enough of an idea of what it's like to be Dalish. So, my research begins in Origins by playing a Dalish. I also wanted to stop myself from romancing Alistair, try something new. But I currently refuse to date Morrigan and Leliana. The first, I have never done, because I valued her friendship dialogue so very highly. Leliana... romancing her as a noble woman was GAG with the stars and the shoes...ugh. Then she went Murder Pope in Inquisition and I've had a thing against her ever since. I have discovered that she actually had some good dialogue with my Dalish guy and it's giving me a better view of her as a character. Abelas likes other guys and was unrequited love with Tamlen.(found out recently that this was not an original idea. Also, apparently if you're female, you're actually in a relationship with him? go figure.)
From Forest to Ostagar
Tamlen and Abelas were hunting, as they frequently did to keep a steady source of food going to the clan. Abelas wasn't always paired with Tamlen hunting, but couldn’t help but tag along wherever Tamlen went, had since childhood, if he could manage it. But if Tamlen got in too much trouble, like the brawl last week, Abelas had his back regardless of whether he had thought it a wise choice. He balanced Tamlen out, cautious where Tamlen was brash.
Abelas admired the color of his blue eyes as Tamlen spoke. Tamlen asked Abelas if he were there to keep an eye on him, sounding mildly accusatory. But Abelas had voluntarily come with him, no matter what Tamlen thought.
"I'd bring up bonding if it would lead anywhere."
Humans came rushing through the forest, interrupting their chat. Although Abelas was as naturally suspicious of outsiders as any Dalish, he was not the type to shoot first. He suggested to Tamlen that they simply walk away after questioning them. Tamlen seemed a bit disappointed, but acquiesced readily enough. The humans told us of a cave not far off that had some sort of monsters or something in it. That was actually what they'd been fleeing from all along. Abelas thought that meant they should avoid the place, but Tamlen insisted on an adventure. Abelas kept his bow close and loosened his hunting knives.
We explored the cave, killing big spiders as we went. It was good there were two of them against such large creatures. It was an interesting place that spoke of elves of times long past. When Elves built structures; even more odd, structures that lay beneath the surface. Abelas told Tamlen he didn't like the place. Tamlen agreed, but again insisted they not give up on potential fun and search the whole place. Abelas tried to comfort himself with the idea that perhaps they would find more information or a relic that would please their Keeper. When they neared an area where the worst bad feeling creeped over them so strongly that Abelas was very ready to drag Tamlen out, his companion spotted a mirror. A bearskarn attacked them immediately and they managed to best it. While Abelas checked out the area for any signs of further aggressive wild life, Tamlen approached the mirror. Obviously ancient and most likely powerful in some way, if it were the cause of that feeling. Tamlen wondered what the words inscripted on it meant and Abelas sarcastically replied that it said, "Don't touch the mirror." Tamlen waved him off, stepping closer, reaching out a hand to the glass, saying he'd seen something. Abelas warned against touching the mirror outright. Of course, as Tamlen always did, he ignored Abelas’s words of caution. Tamlen excitedly began to describe some dark city he could see within. But then he cried out that he'd been seen-- Something went horribly wrong. Confused memories and darkness followed.
When Abelas woke in his tent back among the clan, Tamlen was missing and all his questions of his fellow clan revolved around Tamlen.
WEariness seemed to sap his strength so he tried to start off easy by talking to a few others around the Clan's camp. He also spoke to the story teller. He flinched inwardly about the language his people used regarding those who were different, non Dalish especially. He was different, if only they knew… His interest perked at all the Grey Warden business. They sounded like something big and important and proud. Like the Dalish once were and tried to be now.
Abelas spoke to their Keeper about what to do next. She suggested he find Merril and head out to look for Tamlen, as we could not rely on Grey Warden Duncan to look for him. Abelas found Merril, a serious pessimistic mage, first to the Keeper. She and a friend of Tamlen’s came with him for the search.
Abelas did not like Merril’s suggestion that Tamlen was already dead and he said so. She apologized.
We found the Grey Warden and the mirror. When Abelas realized he meant to destroy the mirror, and possibly any chance of finding a clue as to where Tamlen went, he was upset--but he was too late. The shout to stop died on his lips. Abelas was angry with the Grey Warden for doing it, and questioned him heavily. Duncan drilled into his head that Tamlen was dead, or worse, but either way, beyond redemption. And Abelas died a little inside.
Upon returning to camp, everyone was looking at him questioningly, wondering where their lethallin had gone. Abelas endured the task of going to each, one by one, to tell them. Abelas couldn’t find it in himself to actually state that Tamlen... was dead.... and told them all that Duncan simply knew he was non recoverable. When the Storyteller spoke a poem into the fire, Abelas fought back tears. Ma falon, ma vhenan…
Finally, he reported to his Keeper. He did not feel well at all, whether due to grief or the sickness he'd only that day recovered from. To his growing horrow, however, When Abelas found out that he would be made to become a Grey Warden, because he had an illness within from his brush with the Ancient mirror. He questioned aggressively at first if this was the proper path.... but then he just accepted that even his Dalish life would be stolen from him as Tamlen was. Seemed he would be his Dalish life would die either way; it was just whether or not it would happen literally. He insisted on staying for Tamlen's representative burial.
Saying goodbye to his clan barely topped the sadness he felt when he left that cave knowing Tamlen would never return. His namesake was catching up to him, as Abelas meant Sorrow.
The journey was long and Abelas learned much about the Grey Warden History of the Blights as Duncan felt it important to fill the silence and start his training. Abelas was unenthusiastic, grieving heavily for Tamlen and the loss of his old life. He had never wanted this; it felt thrust upon him. They arrived at a place called Ostagar days later. A messanger sighted Duncan and ran inwards to the ruins. A few minutes later, a man in golden armor came out to greet Duncan.
Meeting King Cailan was confusing because the man didn't act much like a leader. He certainly did not come off as any Keeper Abelas had ever met. Abelas was in no mood to be worshipful of another people’s king,, but being respectful in a place he didn’t understand seemed best. Cailan surprised him pleasantly when he mentioned good things about the Dalish. He supposed the humans had not forgotten that a pair of sibling Dalish saved them from the last Blight.
Then the King ruined the positive by shrugging off Duncan's warning about a sizable darkspawn attack come tomorrow. By the Creators, was caution really so rare in the world? Abelas probably made an expression of disdain but the humans were already in discussions together and ignoring him again. The king left.
Duncan turned to Abelas and began to discuss the battle and then the Joining Ritual. Considering Abelas's grief, the taint illness that was making everything exhausting, and the travel, he’d finally reached the end of his arrow and plainly asked Duncan for a hot meal before he continue. This seemed to amuse Duncan. After a few more exchanges, he left me to my own devices until I had recovered enough for the next task.
Abelas found a peak nearby. The silence was only interrupted by the murmuring of a praying woman kneeling on the stone. Abelas sat down, chewed some rabbit jerky that he still had in his pack. It wasn't a hot meal, but perhaps a nap would make up for it. Then lay down, closed his eyes, and dozed off.
-------------- The Tale of Warden Recruit Abelas Brown haired, green eyed, Dalish who has just received his Vallaslin.
After he awoke, Abelas decided to explore the first human encampment he'd ever been welcome at. He listened in on one of the solidier leaders instructing the other soldiers about darkspawn and how dangerous they were to touch. But that they would not drag them beneath the ground to eat them. Disturbing.
He observed that a lot of people were praying and a few women in robes were preaching the human's religion. In the north east portion of the camp were many humans waving their arms about so Abelas drew closer to see what they were doing. Two humans in heavy army blocked him; but he could see energies seeming to flow around them and he had no interest in being closer to magic.
The Guards outside of the largest tents just seemed interested in gossiping about their leaders, so Abelas left them quickly due to disinterest as well. After attempting to woo a female soldier and failing, a man named Daveth started up a conversation with him. He was another Warden recruit; and they shared a similar reason for being there to join. Neither could return to their old lives..
The Quartermaster assumed he was some servant based only on his ears. Abelas was affronted, the first strong emotion he'd felt since arriving. Did his bow, daggers, and tattoo not clearly speak towards his not being a servant? Was this man blind to anything but his ears?
This emotion perked up his mind some. He had been so focused on all of the "alien" around him, the humans, that he had not seen what was more familiar. His entire life had been around elves; now he saw that all the elves at camp were subservient in some fashion. One male elf, lacking a tattoo that would mark him as Dalish, was running himself ragged all over the camp. When Abelas spoke to him, he seemed surprised and chatted about avoiding beatings like Abelas would know what that life was like. Abelas made it a point to speak to all the elves at camp, and it was the same everywhere. One woman even said she envied his chance to be a Warden. Abelas twisted his mouth bitterly and the expression startled the elven woman away.
A man called out to him as he passed a fenced enclosure. The man there asked if he wouldn't mind helping a dog. Abelas denied knowledge of canine care, but the man said his lack of knowledge mattered little. This species was Mabari, intelligent, and humans valued it greatly. Abelas agreed to try muzzling the animal. He could see what the man was talking about immediately upon approaching the creature. It was odd. Abelas's experience with animals was that of respect, avoidance, or the Hunt. Ill or injured animals, it was simply a mercy to end them. This was an animal much like the Halla of his people, yet apparently useful in battle. Perhaps this animal would imprint to him, and offer Abelas assistance, if it respected him enough. Also, considering his irritation with the Humans around him, it would be an amusing irony if a valuable War animal chose him over all others at the camp. He successfully muzzled the mabari and agreed to search out the herb to treat it's illness within the Wilds.
Four other interactions marked this late afternoon. That of a man starving to death in a cage. Abelas did not understand this method of justice. He had never personally witnessed a judgement within his clan, but the standard judgement was merely exile, not this...disgraceful mess. He talked the guard out of some food for the human, and received a key for his trouble. He pondered how he felt about stealing from the humans. However, considering the history between that of humans and elves... .he did not ponder too long. Second. One of the preaching women tried to offer him a prayer. he found this odd, and questioned her. Then wondered aloud how this offering played out regarding their history; but the woman did not wish to be questioned, merely bowed to a murmured thanks, so she told him to begone. Lastly, a man on a cot was crying out that he had seen the Darkspawn and that all present and their human king would perish. Despite being assured that these were the cries of an ill man, Abelas could admit to himself that the exchange left him distinctly unsettled. And lastly, Abelas encountered another recruit, a foolish sarcastic human. Abelas did not hide the fact that he was not impressed, but the human seemed to be unable to take offense. If Abelas were of better spirits, he might even find the human amusing and charming. But Alistair was not that lucky today.
After begrudgingly doing trade with the Quartermaster, Abelas was again chewing on jerky as he wandered back to Warden Duncan. Alistair and Darveth were already present.
-------------------- The Tale of Warden Recruit Abelas
A Dalish archer who has just received his Vallaslin.
After Alistair went off to collect another recruit, Abelas was introduced to a Ser Jory from Redcliffe. The man's words were polite enough, but he kept staring at Abelas's ears. Abelas asked that they get on with it. Duncan agreed and told them to perform two tasks. Darkspawn blood (Hadn't Abelas just heard that no one was to touch this blood?) and some important papers that were likely rotting in a box within the Wilds. Abelas was told these papers were not actually part of the Ritual for Joining, but that it was their job to pick it up. The orders rankled; he didn't want to be killing foul creatures in a foriegn place surrounded by racist humans. He also didn't want to be dying....and the feeling of a near fever seemed to be following him closely enough. Fine. Blood and papers. oh- treaties. They were "important." Which, considering all the soldiers preparing for a massive attack, they might just be.
As they walked away, Ser Jory insisted on a more proper introduction. Abelas humored him by asking were he was from. A tournemant, a wife... this man obviously saw himself as some sort of hero. Abelas listened, then suggested they head out. Thankfully, the man agreed, and the gates closed firmly behind them.
Ghilan’nain, Speed My Steps
Abelas prayed to himself. He loosened the two daggers he'd replaced his smaller hunting knives with, and filled his Quiver with the specialty arrows he'd just purchased from the Quartermaster. It wasn't long before a pack of wolves scented them; Abelas hung back as the warrior humans surged forward with their blades. When the opporunity presented itself, he loosed his arrows. Shortly thereafter, the group heard someone call out. A scouting band, attacked by darkspawn, and this man their only survivor. The man was coated in blood, barely capable of sharing his story, and was asking for assitance. Abelas knew that time spent in the wilds wouldn't draw just the wild life, there were confirmed Darkspawn in the forest. This man would likely have to be carried back to the encampment. But Alistair had no patience for his impatience, and banaged the man up. Surprisingly, the soldier managed to limp away afterwards. Abelas felt chagrined; his anger and grief had nearly cost the man his life.
Ser Jory complained about the dead band and our level of danger. Abelas definitely had no patience for this; he was dying. They must push forward and delaying just stole more energy from him. He suggested they push on. Several skirmishes later, they had more dark spawn blood than they needed and a good pile of wolf pelts to head back to camp with. Abelas had to admit that he was dragging, if only to himself, and all too glad that the humans rushed every danger to let him cover from behind. Ah, but there were the treaties to be concerned about...
The ruins most likely to contain the treaties were pretty bad off. Abelas inspected what once may have been a chest, preparing to declare this bit of their adventures a lost cause, when a woman's voice called out. The human woman was dressed rather curiously, and carried a staff at her back that marked her as mage just as it would one of his people's Keepers.
The way she spoke to them... the way that she...prowled. This woman may seem, on the surface, friendly, but she was very prepared for violence if it were called for. Everyone else seemed to be tongue tied, so Abelas spoke up when she asked if they were scavenging. They could not be intruding when these were mere ruins within a wild area of forest. The woman seemed amused. Alistair gave warning and the woman mocked him. After several exchanges, the woman focused on him and praised elves stating that they were usally not afraid. This sudden respectful stance made him shift his response a bit; he shared his name.
The conversation moved on around him but soon came back again. Simply, the treaties were not here. Abelas was ready to return to camp to get on with the Joining that would hopefully end this feverish feeling within him. He said as much, and the witch woman accused him of being petulant and let on that it was her mother that took the treaties. Abelas was suddenly just tired. He didn't feel up to chasing other witch women through the forest. After more insults were shared generously among all involved, they headed to "Mother's". Abelas didn't have much to say about the ensuing circling puzzling conversation with the elderly human woman. Thankfully, the treaties were produced shortly and they could return back to camp in much shorter time than previously, although it was now dark.
The feeling of the camp had changed while they were gone. Hushed, men and women turning listlessly on their bed rolls and staring restlessly into cooking fires. It was the eve of battle for them. Abelas blinked at himself. He was part of this; it was the eve of battle for him, too. Abelas, a hunter of Clan Sabrae, involved directly in the human battle front against a horde of tainted Darkspawn. Abelas scoffed a bit, nostalgic and sad... Tamlen would have loved this.
Abelas shook himself and approached Duncan, as the others had been waiting for him. Odd how the humans seemed to be following him. Perhaps they were too busy watching the Dalish elf to lead themselves. He told Duncan they had gotten the treaties. While Alistair and Duncan discussed the witch woman, Morrigan and her mother, Abelas fought off a wave of nausea. He swallowed back a heave; refusing to be ill before these humans. No one knew he was tainted but Duncan, and he wouldn't have Ser Jory accusing him of vomiting from anxious nerves after Abelas had accused the man of being a coward in the Wilds.
Duncan then turned to the new recruits and warned them that the Ritual could exact a harsh price. Abelas cared little; he was a dead man walking; this was his only chance. Abelas told them he was ready for the Ritual.
----------------------------
Abelas slowed behind the group of humans, letting them go on ahead. When he was sure they would not notice, he stopped and leaned against a tree to control himself as a sweat broke on his brow. Elgar’nan, Give Me Strength. He just needed to get his "cure" within the Joining that he had been sentenced with. After that? ...Survival, first. Afters were for later.
Two flights of stairs later, Alistair looked at Abelas curiously as he rejoined them. He just avoided his gaze and noticed that Duncan wasn't present. The two other recruits' argument was more distracting anyway. Jory was obviously having second thoughts. Good on him; unlike Dareth and himself, he had a choice. Daveth tried to conjole Jory into seeing the worthiness of it all. Abelas didn't add much to this conversation as he was sure of nothing. It was at that time that Duncan arrived with a chalice and information regarding the ritual of the Joining. The recruits would have to drink foul black Darkspawn blood. That it was dangerous was made clear in the words used. Those who would survive it. Abelas almost asked for further clarification, then mentally shrugged. Did it matter? He simply stated that he was ready. Alistair began a ritual of words... and despite feeling completely detached from all the events up to this moment, it was this that made Abelas connect. Abelas was, in a way, joining a new clan, just as he might have if he had been given a bond partner at Arlathvhan. The words could almost have been written by a Dalish as they searched for pieces of their lost lore and culture.
Daveth stepped forward and drank of the Chalice. Jory stepped back away from him, uncertain, but Abelas remained, watching closely. Was there some trick to survival of this joining? But Daveth was soon screaming in agony. Then a heartbeat of silence where what Jory saw caused him to exclaim; Daveth seemed to choke on nothing, and collapse. Duncan merely aplogized to Daveth's corpse before turning to the Ser. The Ser was not taking these events too well but his decision to not join the Wardens came to late. Blades were drawn, metal clashed, but Duncan was far too skilled and calm to lose. Abelas was shocked and horrified as Duncan's dagger found the vulnaribitls in Jory's armor and plunged within. Obviously striking an important vessel, Ser Jory bled out in seconds upon the stone.
And then it was Abelas's turn. To fight would get him the same fate; flight, although certainly successful, would just mean an excuciating death a few days later. Abelas stayed his ground. Accepted the Chalice. And allowed the filthy blood to swiftly enter his throat to avoid the taste. At first, he felt nothing, and he handed the chalice back to Duncan. However, sharp pains entered his head; he did not know if he cried out or not as his vision went white.
Vision of a dragon, dark and foul, it's fetid breath choking him as it's growl vibrated his very core.
And then there was Duncan and Alistair, above him, looking down. That came first. Second, was the feeling of the cold stone beneath his body. He had fallen. The pain in his shoulder agreed with that assessment as he stood. He was told it was common for recruits to die at Joinings. Whether from swords or the blood, neither mentioned no did Abelas ask. Duncan asked if he were okay. HE felt awful in a whole new way, but it was just echoes of the earlier pain. Still, he felt better than he had since before his brush with the tainted mirror. The nausea and feverish feeling had vanished. All this is what Abelas thought; but he felt no desire to be honest with Duncan, and merely said he was fine.
Alistair got sentimental about the Wardens that would have been. Abelas mentally balked at this;Mementos of those who had no where else to turn? The tricked? The murdered? but kept his thoughts to himself.
Duncan promptly invited him to a meeting with the King; a discussion of battle plans was to be had. Both the Wardens (and Abelas realized he was now counted among them) went on ahead. Abelas looked around once; the bodies of Daveth and Jory must have been removed while he lay unconscious. Then followed after the two, thinking. It seemed anti climatic, after the tragedy and illness of the last 5 days. This was it. He'd survived to the now; and he was not dying.
---------------- The Tale of Warden Recruit Abelas A Dalish archer who has just received his Vallaslin.
When Abelas neared the group of humans, the King and another heavily armored man were arguing. It seemed to be about whether the King would be present during battle and forces in the neighboring country of Orlais... and honestly, Abelas had little knowledge or personal interest in such a debate. Suddenly, the King offered congratulations for his success in becoming a Warden. Abelas frowned, but then realized this King had no information regarding the Joining. That the only skill it took was randomly not dying of Darkspawn blood. Anyway, he told him bluntly that he had had little choice in the matter. The King shrugged the negativity off. Were all human blond warriors so affable or just the King and Alistair?
Shortly after, he was given his first task as a Warden. Light a Beacon. But why Alistair had to accompany him on such a trivial yet "vital" task... His going alone was shot down with one word from the King. It got noisy as a mage and chantry mother joined the bickeri- er, planning, but Teryn Loghain cut them all off and the group was dismissed. As Abelas wandered over to Duncan's campfire, Abelas wondered what a Teryn was and why one could argue with the King so freely. The Human power structure was odd; Abelas could not imagine a Keeper that wasn't educated and wise by the time they took on the mantle of leadership. Nor anyone openly defying and arguing with the chosen Keeper either.
Alistair was just as pleased to find out that he'd be lighting a beacon with Abelas, albeit for different reasons. Abelas did appreciate the biting sarcasm Alistair used to object. Abelas had no personal urge to be at the forefront of battle; but maybe he just valued the life he'd almost just lost a bit more than Alistair valued his own. When Abelas said he was ready to go, Alistair petulantly agreed he was too. After the beacon was lit, they were to keep the tower cleared and wait for more orders. Duncan suggested they catch some rest and a quick bite and Abelas thought that a fine idea.
After forcing down some mystery gruel from one of the human's campfires, Abelas ignored Alistair's glare of disbelief as curled up on the grass near a ruin wall. Eyes closes, the smell on the air indicated there would be rain soon. The last time he had smelled rain was with Tamlen as they tracked a partiularly large August Ram. Tamlen.... and fell promptly into a sleep untroubled for the first time in days.
A light touch on his shoulder brought him awake instantly. Alistair indicated it was time they head to the Tower. It was clear to Abelas that Alistair had not taken the opportunity to rest very deeply. Abelas supposed he'd taken that opportunity from him, leaving Alistair on guard duty over his sleeping form with no discussion. Habit; Tamlen had always taken first watch.
It was raining, now, and the encampment among the ruins deserted. Alistair had waited too long to wake him by far, as his fellow Warden informed him that all of the soliders were readied at the front or along the ramparts. Abelas hurried towards the tower; on the bridge he stopped, momentarily shocked by the enoromity of war. Grand fireballs of rock were breaking off portions of the bridge, taking men with them into the crevasse below.
Mythal, Preserve Me...
Avoiding that fate, Alistair and Abelas made it across, only to be told that the Darkspawn had overtaken the tower via some below ground entrance. Well. His first task as Warden would not be as trivially easy as he had thought. Abelas realized he was glad that Alistair had joined him after all. They pressed forward, and as the first Darkspawn Hurlock came into view, Abelas notched an arrow. The mage and soldier that had warned them fell into line behind the Wardens. This would not be so very different from the Wilds, after all, and he was confident that they would get through.
His confidence was proved not to be too much as they cleared level after level. Until, finally, they reached the top of the tower in which the Beacon was housed. It also housed an Ogre which presented quite the challenge. But the motley group did triumph, as the seasoned older solider made the final death blow. Alistair did not make it unscathed, his shield arm quite likely broken. Abelas hurried to light the Beacon, hoping it wasn't too late.
----- The Tale of Dalish Warden Abelas An archer who received his Vallaslin shortly before joining the Wardens.
Abelas took a torch down from the wall and thrust into the oil soaked cloth to light the beacon. Both Abelas and Alistair rushed to the multiple balistraria facing where Loghain's men waited in the drizzling rain and darkness, waiting to see the mass of soldiers move forward towards the dwindlings numbers at the front. Just as they began to worry that somehow the beacon had been dimmed by the watery onslaught of the skies, the Wardens saw movement of the troops; but in the wrong direction!. A sickening understanding swept through Abelas, and he could tell from Alistair's darkened expression and cursing that he understood as well. Loghain was quitting the field; abandoning the soldiers on the front, abandoning his very own king, and abandoning Duncan.
They didn't have much time to be horrified, however, because the Darkspawn had seen and responded to the grand fires of the beacon as well by swarming into the room.
Andruil, Aim Me True
His arrows took flame with help from the mage as they sunk into multiple targets. The seasoned soldier fell to with his blades, but fell first from the sheer numbers. Then the mage, although he took many with him in a blast of flames. Abelas flanked Alistair, arrows still flying, but then Alistair was knocked to the side from the swing of a maul wielding hurlock. Abelas took two arrows to the thigh and one to his chest; the pain was breath taking as the arrows leached taint into his flesh and he collapsed. Laying on the floor, his vision dimmed as the swarm's shadows moved on the ceiling. That taint would kill me if I weren't already drank it and lived....The last thing Abelas felt was the feeling of blades tearing across his chest.
. .... ..... ...
Abelas' first sense that he was no longer where he last remembered was his bare skin on cloth. Then the shuffling of another person in a much smaller room. He willed his lids open with effort; he'd obviously been given some sort of herbs for pain that made him ridiculously drowsy. Forcing himself up on one elbow, he saw a human woman perusing a small shelf of tomes across the small hut. He did not gaze for long before she noticed he was awake. the moment he heard her voice, he recognized her and his adrenaline burned off the rest of the drowsiness quickly. She spoke cheerily enough, asked him some questions and he asked some of his own. The two Women of the Wilds had saved them from the tower, the sharp scraping he remembered had been talons, and healed and bandaged their wounds. Still, the way Morrigan's body language spoke was still that Abelas was potential prey. The only time he'd seen it change was when Morrigan was around her 'mother'.
Alistair was so relieved to see him well that Abelas felt chagrined. Silly Alistair may be, but... He covered up his surprise with a joking tone, accusing Alistair of merely being worried of being left alone. This seemed to remind the man of the losses at Ostagar and he openly mourned such losses. Morrigan's mother interupted and it came out that she was the Legend many had warned of. Abelas had not been one to constantly be around the Storyteller's fire at his clan, as Tamlen had had not much patience being still and Abelas had always followed him around. But even he had heard tales of a woman in the wilds to the South. Caution told him to treat the woman respectfully.
The conversation turned towards what Wardens must do. Flemyth said they should go off to stop the Blight. However, Abelas was rather pessimistic about this goal. He barely had a clue what a Warden was exactly, more tales than experience. Alistair shared the same problem, although better educated on the matter than himself. And they lacked any army at all. The only army he knew of that remained had quit the field, so seemed unlikely to back them.
Alistair was also sharing his pessimism; was very angry and confused at Teryn Loghain quitting the field. Abelas wasn't angry; deeply frustrated was more like it, although he shared the confusion. Abelas supposed if the powerful Flemyth thought they could do it, they should at least try. Maybe go after the Archdemon directly, bypassing most of it's troops? Alistair shot this down, reinforcing their lack of Warden related education. But at Flemyth's hinting, Alistair realized that he personally had one ally, and that the 'papers' they'd been sent to fetch before the Battle of Ostagar had been important after all, for they were treaties with various nations and organization. Alistair was very excited; Abelas remarked it obviously wouldn't be as easy as walking up to these people and saying, "Help please."
Pep talk over, Flemyth asked if they were ready to be Grey Wardens. Abelas just said staying alive would be nice. The other two thought that was funny. Then Flemyth pushed her own daughter on them as a traveling companion. Abelas reacted strongly against this idea. The human mage woman had made him feel on edge during every moment he'd been around her; it reminded him too much of that feeling he'd gotten at the ruins in the forest... Imagined, or not, he didn't want her to tag along. Not wanting to disrespect Flemyth, he begrudgingly agreed to Morrigan joining them, although Flemyth added that if, later, he decided Morrigan should leave them, Flemyth would allow it.
"Alone, these two must unite Fereldan against the Blight."
And with that goal burning worry into Abelas's mind, a Dalish, a warrior, and a daughter of Flemyth made their way out of the Koncari Wilds towards the village of Lothering.
The Tale of Dalish Warden Abelas
An archer who received his Vallaslin shortly before joining the Wardens.
The Wilds, made up of wispy trees and swamps, gave way to flatter and dryer ground. Which meant roads for merchants. Abelas hadn't walked on "roads" much bigger than a path before; the last time his clan had moved the aravels, the trees seemed to move out of their way and the clan avoided heavily trekked areas... he wondered where they were now. Anyway, the road increased their speed considerably. Alistair remained very quiet. Abelas may have heard a sniffle, but kept his back turned on the man. He'd only known Duncan a few days; he had no idea at the relationship Alistair had with their previous leader==but Abelas would not have appreciated anyone digging into his personal grief either.
A few hours in, they'd made good headway, when Abelas heard barking in the distance. Abelas signaled the group to stop, wondering if another pack of wolves would be on them. Then he clearly saw it was just one animal and that that one animal looked very much like the hound he'd helped back in Ostagar. He'd totally forgotten about the Mabari! And here it was. He was pleased, and offered the dog a hand.
The hound then barked and jumped excitedly, before turning and growling; their first warning of a band of darkspawn hurlocks. Amazingly, the hound lived up to it's legend and took out not one but two Hurlocks before the battle was over. Covered in blood, the hound looked up at him happily. Interesting sight. Alistair was all for having it, but Morrigan made some comparative remarks between Alistair and the dog. The witch's sarcasm was amusing, but her disinterest in the dog joining their party was noted. Alistair asked Abelas what he would name the hound.
Naming.... Fen'Harel, the trickster god of his people. Intelligent and capable of unexpected things. Why not? His vhenan was dead and his life of being a Dalish hunter had been destroyed. Abelas would die, if not from the war with the darkspawn, from the taint in his blood before he had more than a few greys on his head. What more could Fen'Harel do? It was settled. Since they were already stopped, Abelas gathered herbs at the side of the road and fashioned healing poultices for the group.
Alistair waited for Morrigan to wander off for her own herbs before speaking up quietly. He thought Abelas was doing a good job leading them so far. Abelas paused his hands and stared up at Alistair from where he was crouching. Had he been leading them? He'd taken point, certainly, but that hadn't meant he was leading them. Abelas had never been the leader in any group; that Tamlen had felt so comfortable choosing their activities while Abelas agreed or disagreed had been great. He gave a short version of his thoughts to Alistair but Alistair shared that he'd never been a leader either; it made him uncomfortable. His thoughts would get muddled, people would get unhappy, there would be crying... It was just best that Abelas lead.
And that's how Abelas became the leader of the remaining Wardens of Fereldan in the middle of a Blight after only 3 days on the job.
They continued their journey to Lothering shortly after, Abelas shaking his head at the turn of events. It'd been a very long week and he suspected it would get quite a bit longer.
The sun was low in the sky when they arrived at a bridge that would lead into the valley that Lothering sat within. A group of soldiers seemed to be guarding it as they came forward. Their leader seemed cheery, although Abelas raised one brow in distaste of being referred to as a thing. Alistair filled him in; these were not soliders but highwaymen preying on refugees. Morrigan suggested that the group teach them a lesson. Abelas set his tone, firmly stating that they were obviously not refugees. He thought the warning would be clear. Yet, they still insisted... and then threatened him with physical harm. Considering that it had taken an entire swarm of darkspawn just to best two of them a few days before, Abelas had no fear of these mere humans. So he told them they could certainly try harming them....but they failed miserably and the leader surrendered, whining about how hard life was. Abelas didn't buy it; demanded that they give him all that they had stolen and to leave immediately. Off they ran; and considering the direction they ran, to the south, it would not be an easy time of it for them.
They entered the village proper and Morrigan and Alistair began to bicker. Which was annoying, yes, but when Morrigan started mocking the man for his grief, Abelas put his foot down and told her to lay off.
hahahahah oh Morrigan. So Sassy.
Alistair managed to drag himself from the bickering, props to him, and declared they should get a plan together. The treaties between the Wardens and the Dwarves, Elves, and the Circle of Magi were the main topic of discussion. Alistair suggested they go to Arl Eamon first. It seemed that Alistair was leading just fine with all these suggestions, so Abelas asked him why it had to be left all up to him? Alistair was annoyed, figuring they had settled this on the road. But the presence of Morrigan and potential embarrassment did not change his mind; he again declared that he would follow whatever Abelas chose. Sigh. He'd given it his best shot. So, discomfort of Morrigan put to the side, he asked her what her thoughts on the matter were. Her suggestion was to go all the way to Denerim, the very capitol of Fereldan, and assassinate Loghain. That would be the last time he'd ask her anything. Loghain had committed treason among his own people, but Abelas felt no need for revenge, as if Loghain had him in mind when he abandoned the battling forces. Hadn't they just been told that they must present the best face and inspire people? Sneaking around and killing leaders didn't seem conducive to that goal. Nor was it likely that Abelas currently had the skills or resources for such an endeavor.
Now. Fanciful assassination plans aside, where should they go first. Abelas had never heard of the Circle of Magi, had never seen a dwarf, and currently had no urge to return to the forest he'd just left a week ago. That they must, he understood but it was just...too...soon. Alistair seemed attached to the idea of visiting his friend, this Arl Eamon, but in the same breath said they may not offer any help at all. Abelas decided he would make his decision after they resupplied in the small village. Perhaps they would even get more information about the current state of the world from the people living there. Yes. Seemed a good plan, even for as green a leader as he was.

I have a list of Dalish prayers I want to use at least once, but there was nothing to pray about this time. I is silly.
I am having fun exploring a Dalish elf. Treating everything as alien while not treating everything and everyone with distrust.

melbella , phoray, woot, climb on the DA horse and get moving! It just took a while for the shock stress to wear off. I also volunteered for Dwarf Duty, so I've been working many hours on that as well. But sleep now and writing/gaming tomorrow.

I'm currently trying to finish up a playthrough with my latest mage Solavellan that I've been working on for a while. I'm just doing all the mini side quests, dragging my feet for the inevitable heartache. Not my favorite part Its so painfully beautiful I realized in all my playthroughs I never created a firm Andrastian. Im determined to create a pro templar, maker believing rogue who has all her sights on Cullen... Who won't just end up being another Solas LI. Ahh
