Gamlen has apparently decided to move in
I don't remember that happening the first two times Leandra died on my watch, but this last time, Gamlen stayed at the mansion for the remainder of Act 2. It's...sorta sweet, I guess, him staying nearby so he and Hawke can grieve together. Gamlen may be an ass, but he's an ass who sometimes cares.

I don't remember it happening before either, and I've played the game more than a few times. Maybe it's cause he's right in the doorway and easy to spot?

I read angsty fanfiction. Now I'm in a fugue of self induced sadness. Then I thought, "Was Origins the only scary game of the 3?" I remember being sad in 2. But scared? Maybe the moment thAt could have come close in DAI was facing Cory and the Dragon at Haven.

The Deep Roads are almost always scary and they are in all 3 games. Vanilla DAI Deep Roads (ie Valammar) maybe not so much, but Descent definitely upped the creepy factor. Also, the DA2 spiders scare the crap out of me, even when I know they're about to spawn. Chateau d'Onterre is also very creepy, just like Bartrand's house in Act 3. I don't like to take Varric to the chateau just for that reason. Even though he doesn't make the comparison, I did.

Finished Witch Hunt, forgot how short that DLC is, by this rate I should have Awakenings finished tonight, if I stick to it. Want to get cracking on a DA2 run, haven't played it since pre-DAI days. Witch Hunt is ridiculously short, but Awakening is more substantial. So how does everyone address your PC? Your Highness? Also, what did you do to Nathaniel Howe? I had great intentions of playing Awakenings last night, that didn't happen soooooo I haven't bumped into him yet. Doubtful I'll refuse his help when I meet him, he makes a cameo in DA2 if I recall, I want to see this. I like callbacks that I have a hand in. M'lady or Ser most call her, I think. Enjoying being a noble, still prefer the elven origins tho.

Also -- dumbest question yet -- how do you post pics from your PTs? I can capture images using "CTRL" + Print Screen. But then how do you upload to this board? Or are you supposed to post pics to third party site (which sites do people use?) and then post url here?

Or are you supposed to post pics to third party site (which sites do people use?) and then post url here? angst: a feeling of deep anxiety or dread, typically an unfocused one about the human condition or the state of the world in general. In regards to fanfiction? Fear, depression, sadness, arguments and misunderstandings that lead to LIs never getting together, or they get together just in time for one or the other to die. Or even a Hero who does everything right, but still gets no happy ending. Sometimes I just read angst. Other times, I specifically look for the "Angst with a happy ending." So, yes, I'll feel frustrated and sad and hopeful and finally HUGS. I would say Solas romance is pretty darn angsty. With questionable happy ending. A03 is Archive of our Own, a fan fiction posting site that is currently popular for being better than the others; their tag system s certainly better than what I recall of other fanficiton sites when I wrote fanfiction 10 years ago. I upload to photo bucket. Hosting images is a lot of data, so free fan boards can't handle them well I think?

Today, I was thinking that Cory was the sort of villain that reminded be of the Power Rangers. If Rita and Lord Zedd had just come down to earth in the second episode, they would have wiped the Power Rangers out before they got all their power ups. Instead, they kept throwing low to moderate difficulty monsters at them, almost training them to beat them.
The Archdemon wasn't particularly aware of the Wardens enough to consider them a serious threat, not knowing that they were amassing an army. Also, no clue if the AD actually had deep thoughts.
And DA2, there was no specific villain; Chaos and choices reigned supreme.
Although, sometimes I think Cory was a weak villain so that when you realized Solas was the bad guy, you were just side swiped. Like, Solas was the secret villain you couldn't see because you were dealing with that other idiot.

I haven't written about my lady Templar, Mattias, for a month. Had to go back a few pages to see where I left off in her story, so now I'm here! Under Her Skin and The Shrine of DumatLast time, Mattias got together with a few of her inner circle companions for a night of Wicked Grace. Cullen unfortunately lost all of his clothes to Josie So back to business, Mattias and Leliana worked together to find out more about Lady Magister Calpernia. This lead to a visit to Vicinius' summer home in Val Royeaux, where it was ransacked by the Venatori. After dealing with the goons, Mattias, Blackwall, Sera and Dorian found pieces of a memory crystal among the remains. While Dagna studied the crystal back at Skyhold, it triggered a memory of Calpernia's conversation with Corypheus. Something about her becoming a vessel. A vessel for what? More dirt was dug up when Mattias took her party to the Shrine of Dumat. They discovered Calpernia's former master, Erasthenes, locked up behind a containment barrier and forced to answer any questions. The lady Inquisitor interrogated the Magister, demanding info about Corypheus' plan for Calpernia to become this vessel. Erasthenes complied each time the barrier prodded him with its energy. Once she got all of her answers, Mattias killed him. "This will be a message for Corypheus," she declared as the ashes dissipated into the air. The Left Hand of the DivineLeliana may not have been pleased with Erasthenes' fate at the Shrine of Dumat, but what's done is done. She later received a letter from the late Divine Justinia about travelling to Valance, where she'll find a final message. Mattias wasn't thrilled to hear her spymaster taking leave. "You no longer take orders from her. I give you orders!" "I was hoping you would accompany me to Valence. Would you at least consider it? This may benefit the Inquisition," Leliana reasoned as she rose from her chair to stand eye to eye with her leader. The lady Inquisitor lets out an irritated sigh and reluctantly agreed to go with her. Arriving in Valence, Justinia's letter indicated Leliana and Mattias visit the Chantry. "The Hero of Ferelden and I used to come here," the spymaster mused as she knelt before a statue of Andraste. To their unexpected surprise, a Chantry Sister named Natalie greeted the two. However, something was off the entire time and Leliana confronted her. It seemed that Natalie was a spy for Grand Cleric Victoire, who opposed the Inquisition. Mattias didn't waste time idling, so she allowed her spymaster to kill the Sister. Once the deed was done, Leliana and Mattias retrieved the late Justinia's final message from a hidden vault. It mentioned Justinia was releasing Leliana as her Left Hand, fearing she was using her. But Leliana concluded what she needed to do was necessary. "When I'm ruthless, it gets us where we need to be." A letter from the Hero of FereldenAlthough Leliana may be hardened to an edge while performing her role as spymaster, she shows her tender side to the one she loves. Warden Commander Miriam Amell of Ferelden. "I'm pleased to hear from my love. It brings me comfort knowing she's fighting to return to me when her mission is over." To be continued... Next up, trouble in Emerald Graves and Emprise du Lion. Then the big revelation...

Although, sometimes I think Cory was a weak villain so that when you realized Solas was the bad guy, you were just side swiped. Like, Solas was the secret villain you couldn't see because you were dealing with that other idiot. Yes, I know what angst is. I just failed to take the next step and note that you turned it into adjective with the ever versatile "y." In the word of my favorite philosopher, Homer (Simpson): "Doh!" Anyhow, looking at the strength and weaknesses of the various games, DA2's purpose is to highlight the build-up of tensions between the Templars/Chantry and the Mages. They even threw in a possible external threat to the nations of Thedas with the Qunari. And then came the DLC: Legacy.... When Inquisition starts, a veteran DA gamer would think that this game was going to be all about a Templar-Mage Civil War. The Inquisition is called to investigate which group was responsible for blowing up the conclave and culminates with the battle of Haven where you find out Cory has taken advantage of the conflict to corrupt both sides (and later, we see the GWs have fallen under his spell as well). This didn't bother me when I first played DAI since that was the very first DA game I played and I had no idea what came before. Now (after playing Origins and DA2) I feel this was a mistake because it trivialized a key theme from the first two games. I'd also say the "wide open world" they created may have undermined Cory as central villain in the core game. In Origins, there's an important purpose to most of the game locations. In Inquisition, not so much. Do you really have to go to Fallow Mire? Exalted Plain? Empris du Leon? Emerald Graves? There as so many areas you can bypass and still go to the Arbor Wilds and trigger the end game. I haven't played Trespasser yet; I take it's an improvement over the Cory plot?

Douglas had a very bug-ridden trip through the Emprise. Enemies flying off and in when they don't have wings (like Red Templars, for example), a strange encounter with the BFG (big friendly giant for those not familiar with the book or the movie), he dropped out of the sky in Suledin Keep, started fighting some Red Templars, which I thought i'd start with because they looked the most threatening and besides the giant was doing a nice job of softening them up. Bull waded through the Templars like a hot chromatic knife through butter but the giant never turned his attentions to the party, even after we hit it. It didn't seem to lose health, it just stood there letting us whack it round the legs, it didn't even show up on the mini-map. The one i'm used to running into closer to the castle was as aggressive as ever. Somehow, transferring to the Tower of Bone camp, Doug fell through some ice or something and materialised under the ground, explored a bit before falling into a bottomless cavern, switched to Dorian who appeared in the same, underground spot but luckily jumping up high enough to get the character's head above ground level respawned him back in camp as normal. you could see Varric, Bull and a bunch of tents and stuff floating above you. Very odd. Found whole new areas of the keep (note to self, you can avoid that giant that actually attacks!) and a floating sword in the Templar tower at Skyhold. I thought the Templars were supposed to be anti-magic. Messed around in the Hissing Wastes for a bit after and completed Fariel's tomb quest, i found that wandering Chantry sister for the first time and got some Cole/Dorian/Bull banter I hadn't heard before.

Yes, while the Inquisitor was out fighting the decoy, the real villain was at Skyhold painting in the rotunda. SMH...

Ah, well, pretty much any time I'm underground I find it creepy. And there were spiders, with their stupid rattlesnake rattle, so doubly so. I don't know how you could miss the hordes - there's the first one where you need to set the charges, the second one where you find the bodies afterwards, and the third one is the no-saves battle. Not horde-y enough for you?
I never really found the darkspawn creepy, other than the broodmother in Origins. But that was more Hespith's rhyme than the actual fight. The fight was just....eww, gross!

I use Imgur for all my screenshots. They've made some changes recently that allow pictures to upload much faster. I like that part, but now they no longer update in the order they are selected, so be prepared for a jumbled mess if you upload a bunch at once.

First time I've put Anora on the throne. Dang, is she bossy. Her and Alistair's marriage is going to be pretty darn rocky judging from the way Alistair said, paraphrase, "Damned if I roll over and let her lead Fereldan."
She was kind of annoying at the War meeting in Redcliffe. But I liked her speech before battle.
Also- Loghain! Did you know he said the reason MArric didn't recognize Alistair is because it would imply infidelity? Um, now. I read the book. Rowan was dead a year before Alistair was even conceived. So, I call BS, Loghain.
And I finished Origins. Brother Berkel never catches a break does he.
Will post my write up of the whole mess another day. time for sleep at 7am hahahah

(Either that or he hasn't read "The Calling." ) Then again, if this occurred with your Surana, he might not want to reveal that Alistair's mother was an elf and that they wanted to hide that from Alistair. Given that my Surana is from Denerim, she probably won't be merciful to the Hero of the River Dane. I'll have to do my own update as well. One thing I will mention: relations with Morrigan grow ever more brittle. Neria finally gave Morrigan the Grimoire she found in the Tower when she went to save the Circle and get mages and lyrium to save Connor. (That gave +10 approval.) Later, after they went to find the Urn of Sacred Ashes -- and Morrigan crudely suggested going along with Kolgrim's plan to desecrate the ashes -- Morrigan comes asking for help to thwart Flemeth's body-snatching plot. While not completely unsympathetic, Neria beat around the bush so much before agreeing to kill Flemeth that their relationship took a further step backward (minus 15 approval). Neria continues to give all the jewelry she finds to Leliana and Wynne. With luck, their relationship will reach the breaking point when they're in the climax of the Tevinter slavers in the alienage mission. I assume Morrigan will just walk away on two feet or run away on four, but it would be cool if there were some sort of fight! Currently, things are so bad, Morrigan won't do the widow notification task for the Blackstone irregulars.

Considering Morrigan claims to want to preserve all things old and magical (whether she knows anything about them or not) being in favor of contaminating the ashes is completely OOC.

Also- Loghain! Did you know he said the reason MArric didn't recognize Alistair is because it would imply infidelity? Um, now. I read the book. Rowan was dead a year before Alistair was even conceived. So, I call BS, Loghain. Hmmm....I will have to do a Loghain PT just to see what other tall tales he chooses to tell! It was kind of interesting. I reasoned my Surana was super anti slavery (well, she's super pro freedom) and killed both the elven guard slaver and the mage slaver; which you can avoid both killings if you want. Then, zomg, there was Cauthrien right before the Landsmeet saying all the torture and selling of flesh was all justified (I'd always persuaded her to back down so never got this speech, but went with intimidate this time, because that is how my Surana rolls.) Cauthrien must be in love with Loghain that she would take his words so into herself that they became her own. So, apparently intimidate doesn't work, and that leads to battle. I do not have any remorse over that slave apologist. So, you would think that this whole feeling would carry on over into killing Loghain but this Surana just found it hard to hate the paranoid man. Kinda obvious that he was a bit off his rocker. And then Riordan stepped forward about their being "compelling reasons" for making him into a Grey Warden, and there was no reason to be suspicious of the Senior Grey Warden was there? So, when my Surana said, maybe it's a good idea, Alistair threw a fit, saying he'd leave the Grey Wardens. My Surana paused and realized, sadly, that if she wanted to protect her new brother, telling him to leave...to stay away from the battle lines... was a good idea. Even if it made their sibling like relationship break, Alistair would be safe.
Paraphrase: Riordan: Let's make him a Warden. Surana: uh, why would I do that? Riordan: compelling reasons I can't tell you right now. Alistair: Loghain sucks, this is a terrible idea. Surana: I dunno, Alistair. Riordan has "compelling reasons." Alistair: Wardens are for honorable people. Loghain is not. Surana: *mild feelings of shame* Not all of us have a spotless track record, Alistair. (My Surana has almost annulled a circle/killed the Dalish. Uses blood magic. Also, totally not gung ho about the Wardens.) Alistair: What Loghain did isn't the same as the little stains of our past. Anora: Alistair is a child- he sucks. We need Loghain alive. Alistair: I will become king and kill Loghain. Anora: See, a big baby. Just let me be Queen. Surana: Uh... I thought both of you should marry, we totally had that conversation before the Landsmeet. It'll mellow both of you out. Alistair:What! ...Fine. I'm leaving the Grey Wardens to go be King then. Surana: *hurts to hurt him, already faltering in her decision* You don't have to leave us, Alistair. Alistair: *Quiet, sad.* Yes, I do You left me no choice. I’m sorry.
--------Which, In a way, Surana may have made a different decision at this point. But the game commits you to Joining Loghain really really early on in the conversation. -----
Paraphrase Post Landsmeet conversation: Angriest Angry Alistair Ever: Come to throw me a party? Surana: I don't want this to affect our friendship. Alistair: ANGRY SPEECH ABOUT WHY LOGHAIN SHOULD DIE. Surana: I don't want to talk about Loghain *I just want to make us okay again.* Alistair: Too fucking bad. But I guess I'm king now and I'll suck it up and make the best of it... *quiets down, get's sad sounding* Good luck, I suppose. We both have important things to do away from each other.
*Surana runs to Zevran and bawls -in my head-*
So, hardened Alistair went to marry Anora safe and sound from the battle field. My Surana was very sad about it even if she didn't regret it. So, it had nothing to do with thinking Loghain wasn't worth killing, or even specifically that he would be useful. It was about keeping Alistair safe. (and also the swift conversation getting away from her.) It made Surana feel a lot better that King Alistair at the Saved the World Party had stopped being angry, even if their was a pretty hefty wound turning scar on their relationship. I guess Loghain doing the ultimate sacrifice satisfied his blood thirsty ness

Oh yeah. And that even if Loghain poked Uldred over the edge, that mad mage had been planning a rebellion for years. Loghain really had very little hand in the Circle going crazy matter. I can't even figure out why Loghain encouraged him at all; sloppy writing on that one. Honestly, I don't get why Morrigan gets so mad. You are one of the two final wardens in all of Fereldan. And she wants you, and possibly Alistair, to risk their lives NOW, not say, AFTER the Blight, to kill an ancient magical spirit woman who can transform into a great bird capable of carrying two bodies unharmed in it's claws because the woman may try to posess Morrigan. Morrigan also refuses to discuss it with the old lady. The whole request is short sighted (for Fereldan Blight Reasons) and entirely selfish. And you're the shitty person if you don't agree IMMEDIATELY. My Surana went to visit Flemeth with no intentions to do anything but talk. Ya know, like smart calm people. I'm not sure Morrigan ever suggests to leave though. You're going to have to kick her out.

I guess Loghain doing the ultimate sacrifice satisfied his blood thirsty ness Interesting! One minor spoiler question: In previous elf rogue PTs where my PC made the US, King Alistair commits to a homeland for the Dalish or improving the lot of alienage elves. In your Surana's case, does he do that? What of the mages? I can't help but think he would hold a grudge... Agreed on Cauthrien. Nothing personal involved, but when I ran into that vengeful knight in Denerim, I was able to persuade him out of a fight. Diplomacy can prevent unnecessary bloodshed but you gather less loot...always a trade-off. Oh, how did things work out between your Surana and Morrigan? The neat thing about this game is that if you listen carefully to the lines of NPCs (and maybe read between the lines a bit), you can logically argue almost any course of action for almost any PC, however defined. Two things I have never done so far in Origins: desecrate the Sacred Ashes and side with Branka. Logically (by my logic anyhow), I can see doing the latter, but hearing Branka's betrayal of her house by Hespith is a hard one to ignore. Also, no deals with demons yet...

I'm not sure Morrigan ever suggests to leave though. You're going to have to kick her out. Pro-Loghain Origin enthusiasts like to argue that Cailan and his forces at Ostagar were doomed and Loghain's decision to retreat a wise one. With Loghain being behind Arl Eamon's poisoning (which meant that Redcliffe soldiers weren't at Ostagar and may have contributed to the outcome of the battle) and even having a minor part in the Circle rebellion gives ammunition to those on the other side who see his actions as more premeditated. You know he was strongly against Cailan's efforts to cooperate with the Orlesians; it's also possible he may have gotten wind that this might also involve marrying off Cailan to Empress Celene at the expense of Anora. This would provide Loghain with a reason for betrayal. Yes, Morrigan is hopelessly selfish. For myself, the dilemma is that Flemeth is the one who saves the PC and Alistair from certain death (most likely in the form of a Dragon I think). Even if she did it for selfish reasons (Old God grandchild), you still owe her your life. (Of course, her unwillingness to talk directly about any subject allows gamers who want to fight another High Dragon justification for fighting.) So your Surana didn't kill Flemeth? How low did your approval go before rejecting the DR? Currently, I have a Morrigan rating of Minus 25 Neutral or under 40 if you count each bar as 10. If nothing else, it should be interesting to hear what she says as she becomes more hostile.
