There is a mod over at nexusmods that reduces the penalties by 50% or even 100% (whichever version one prefers) so those things are actually useful and interesting. You can find the mod here. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Yesterday two things happened. The first was hilarious, the second...less so. One: I went to Crestwood to get the assassin leader token thingies for my specialization quest. There are three groups, one of them is at the shore of the lake. When my group rolled in the respective assassin leader went straight into the water and drowned. I heard his "arghlglgl" and he was gone. I laughed a few minutes about it, until I realized, that maybe I might not be able to retrieve the token without drowning, too. But I was and everything was fine. Two: I made such bad rolls again that Dagna would have kicked Sera out of the Inqusition. I say 'would have' because I cheated and did not save afterwards. I had put Cole's gear on Sera for that one quest and she took it when she left. And since Cole wears my best archer gear....no. Just no. I'm still not sure if I will reroll everything when I do the quest again or if I choose the same answers and just let her leave. It's a bit early in the game for my taste, I haven't hardly made any big decisions yet. I'll think about it. Am I understanding this right: are you choosing dialogue based on a 6 sided dice? Yes I do. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone since this is my sixth time playing the game. One day I had the idea for a totally random PT where everything would be determined by dice (or a random number generator for anything that goes beyond 6 numbers). So I made up some rules and started the playthrough. My character is randomized. I rolled for gender, race and class, for a preset, a name... Her mount, her decor in Skyhold, war table missions - I roll for everything. Excluded are skills, gear and party setup, because it is still supposed to be fun and constantly dying does not equal fun for me, so I stop there with the randomness. So far I have had terrible luck with rolling and its a bit like a trainwreck, but I'll go with it.

AneiraHe does this work for romances even? I mean, aren't you a female dwarf you got 3 options, and then you may not even flirt with them.

Actually, going random might force you to try out skills and party combos you might not do on your own. You might make your mage max out on storm instead of inferno, for example. An "all rogue" might bring up banter you would never hear otherwise! Or pair up companions who normally aren't on the same team!

phoray I'm not sure yet, although I have already flirted with everyone at least once, Blackwall, Cullen and Cassandra twice. But since they all hate me anyways I'm not sure romance is an option. And I guess you have to use all or most of the flirt options when they are available or else there's no romance? deadlydwarf Yes I've thought about that, too, but decided not to. I was forced to play a dual wield rogue which I would never do if I was free to choose, so there's something. ^^ Since I had to roll the difficulty, too, I prefer to use working builds. Dying frustrates me to no end, I'm a sore loser, so I just know if I would die constantly I would ragequit. My frustration tolerance is veeery low. Also I usually do not have Cole in my party, and I sometimes take Vivienne instead of Dorian although I can't stand her. Yeah, so I'm trying to do things differently to make it. You should try it (=random PT) at some point, if you like mayhem.

You should try it (=random PT) at some point, if you like mayhem. HAha couldn't help it. I probably will try this method out at least once. I just want to do all the play throughs that have a plan first ^^ And I'm not sure about the romances in DAI. I understand DA2 and DAO pretty well, but mostly just know about the hard lock points? Maybe those are the only ones you have to nail? For Blackwall, the conversation RIGHT after you reach skyhold is the only one you definitely need. For Solas, the Haven Kiss. For Cullen, it's the first kiss. I have no clue on the rest of them. But Advisors can seemingly hate you and be in a relationship at the same time, because they have no approval bars.

I think, you need good reputation for the romance; I remember, that I could not start the romance with Dorian (after the first kiss – romance quest), before I had enough approval, so: if they hates your Inquisitor, then you have low chance for it (at least with companions, I dont know the advisor's romance, sadly)

he gave money to elven women to avoid having to go to Ostegar Yes, I always like to give them money. You know if they go to Ostagar, they will be treated like shit and then killed by the darkspawn. But in Highever, they'll be treated with respect, unless they are butchered by Howe's men. We accompanied Arl Eamon to his estate in Denerim, where we were immediately visited by the self proclaimed Regent of Fereldon, the Arl of Amaranthine, the Teryn of Highever, and the Arl of Denerim.

Catilina I think you completely misunderstood me. I wasn't saying that all mages in Thedas are like that. I was pointing out that the writers tend to give their mage party members very similar traits. Cold and caustic is typical for the women and world-changing destructive revolutionaries for the men. I've read most of the lore (save the first two DA books and WOT Vol. 2) and I know not all mages are like that. When the mages join the Inquistion, I always accept them as allies. I also invite them into the Chantry if they want it. I don't get along with Vivienne very well in most of my games because I usually play pro-freedom. I also want to give a shoutout to Wynne. No hidden agendas, no ulterior motives really except for helping the Warden stop the Blight. Dorian is listed as good mage that doesn't believe in those "dismal little mage prisons." I respected Merrill a lot even though I thought she wasn't thinking things through as much as she thought. I don't mind a flawed character, but it felt like they gave her blood magic as overcompenstation for not having the traits most lady mages in the DA parites have. Morrigan, despite her faults, has been friends to all but one of my Wardens. Anders was an emotional headtrip to romance and he's my "canon" LI. Valanna was angry but not without cause. I still like Solas as a person (not so much as the Dread Wolf tearing down the Veil) and he's one of the most interesting companions we've had in a DA game imho. In fact, the only one that I truly dislike is Vivienne. That mainly comes from her role if she becomes Divine on top of her personality in the main game. I don't dislike because she's a mage, I just don't think she's a good person deep down. Unlike every other mage I listed. I think the rest do have a heart and mean well. I am a pro-mage player most of the time because I've noticed that mages are just people. Some good, some bad, most are boring. That's why I'd like to see the DA team break some of their bad habits for writing casters for the party. I'd like to see folks like Fenyriel, the Dreamer from DA2. Just being a nice person for the sake of being nice is a trait too many mage companions lack, sadly. Rhys is one of my favorite characters in the entire series. I was bummed that neither him or Evangline made it directly into DA:I. I know that the DA team could do a better job of writing mage party members that aren't so similar. A full-time party member like Rhys in personality would be a welcome change. I'd prefer anti-Circle/pro-College of Magi as well.

So, 12 PTs in and I am still finding new stuff.
Cleared out the Red Templars in Red Water, then took a boat ride to Dragon Island. After watching Vinsomer dance to her own beat for a while, Bruenor and team headed back to the boat. Ever watchful for more blood lotus, Bruenor noticed some blooms on the far side of the boat that he hadn't seen before. He also found this:
She did her magic mumbo jumbo routine (off camera) and Bruenor ended up with this:
He hid it in the storage chest, hoping it might disintegrate while he's off adventuring. Which one? The amulet? Or the hideousness that is "Battlemaster" Armor? For mages, "Battlemage Mail" is insanely bad! Is there any high stat Tier 3 armor that doesn't look like a leisure suit on the PC?
The amulet. Bruenor is a rogue, so no battlemaster armor for him. He's wearing one of the Prowler outfits in that picture.
For mages, I like the battlemage armor, the one that has the chest piece made of metal. The coat isn't too bad, but gets old after a while. I don't really like the mail one either, with the flaps on each side.

I agree, probably the writers want to present the mages as cold, caustic, destructive, crazy, unreliable, unpredictable etc., and many people tend to think so. (I heard, that the writers did not expect how many people sided with Mages in DA2.) What I wrote, was not against you (yes, I know, you are pro-mage), just to clear: these are general human traits, not because of they are mages. (I have not read the books –likely I should–, my informations come only from the game and the forums.)

Catilina It happens. If you don't want to drop the money on the books and comics, I'd recommend surfing the DA wiki and TVtropes. The lore is worth the read for sure. The main book I would recommend is Asunder. It has Rhys (Wynne's adult son,) Wynne and Cole as main characters. It also shows exactly what finalized the end of the Templars with the Chantry and the end of the Circles of Magi. It's very good. --Got into Skyhold without Solas being upset. Hurray! Talked to everyone like usual. I think Bull is probably the second easiest character for me to get approval from. I still enjoy watching my characters get a little toasty. I also find it interesting the way he subtly prods the Inquisitor and learns more about them. --So far I've found only two judgements that everyone likes. One is banishing the Avvar tribe to Tevinter, the other is sending the Templar Knight-Commander back to the Templars to be judged by them. That's what I wanted to do and I was relieved to see nothing but various amounts of approval coming from the companions. --I made my Hawke. She looks a little bit off (more so than my last time) but it still looks enough like her minus the makeup. And she has a new scar, but being a rogue on the run isn't as fun as it sounds. She misses her Bela though.

What do the grey bars on some of the DAI health bars represent? Well rescuing the Queen didn't go as smoothly as it might have. We knew we would have to fight our way through... i.imgur.com/kCyDkFH.jpgBut a mage had the Queen locked behind a magical barrier. i.imgur.com/RI6ZOs9.jpgWhile looking for the Mage, we found that Alister and I are not the only Grey Wardens in Ferelden. But Riordan said he was in no state to help us, and left for Arl Eamon's. i.imgur.com/VKS1m9q.jpgSo we swarmed through the estate, releasing prisoners as we went. i.imgur.com/3LA2UND.jpgUntil we found Teyrn Howe himself. i.imgur.com/tX7AA5g.jpgWe killed Howe, just to shut him up, and Leliana unlocked the Queen's door. i.imgur.com/jqJD6sX.jpgI just realized that if you persuade Vaughan Kendells to give you his key and then kill him, you don't get the 5xp for killing him, but you do get 40 sovereigns so I suppose that's fair. i.imgur.com/USHDnRG.jpgEven dressed as a guard, as she was, Queen Anora is a very attractive woman. i.imgur.com/OBOeeiA.jpgBut the whole thing was a setup, and Loghains men were there with an arrest warrant for the murder of Teyrn Howe, before his blood had even stopped flowing. i.imgur.com/U8Hu1wQ.jpgAnd I'm not sure why, but fortunately I was still wearing the ring Morrigan had given me. i.imgur.com/vBmSWaq.jpgSo the good sisters came to my rescue. i.imgur.com/Vg0G9pW.jpgi.imgur.com/sCRN4Jj.jpgThen the Queen had a plan of her own, of course it included her retaining the throne. i.imgur.com/ajl0mPx.jpg

In DAI, on top of health, you have two possible extra layers of protection: Guard and Barrier. The grey bars represent when a character has Guard. Guard is generated naturally by warriors. (Other classes can generate guard via the Masterwork slot when you craft armor yourself.) Barrier is protection cast by mages. On the health bars, it's present when you have a transparent bluish color over the health bar. Have you done DAI yet?

For rogues, it would be Prowler on Tier 3. I find the "every character has his/her own look" concept. For rogues, Prowler makes Sera and Cole look like they're in snowboarding outfits. Varric looks like he's a pirate. And the PC ends up in a leisure suit! On Tier 3, the worst is Battlemaster armor. You'd expect a warrior to have a full suit of armor. Instead, you get this: I prefer the heavier look of the DAO armors and the fact that they look the same on all characters. Just curious, where did you find the battlemage armor? I can only find the mail and coat.

So, I played the game this morning and already updated about that. Then I studied about 6 hours, and the urge to draw was just overwhelming. So, here it is. My people are stick characters but I think I did really well on the Aravels. Well....half of them. The very first page of the huge fan comic I've begun. ^^

Just curious, where did you find the battlemage armor? I can only find the mail and coat. I assume you mean the schematic? I'm not 100% certain, but I think I bought it from the dog merchant in Hissing Wastes. Not sure if I needed the Short List perk or not - I think I did. Regardless, it probably wouldn't hurt to get the perk, then visit the merchant each play session to see what new stuff he has. It should eventually pop up in the inventory.
For spiffy looking armor, on dwarves I really like the Legion of the Dead armor. I also like the Griffon Mail (rogue version, not the other two) and the Armor of the Dragon Hunter (from JoH). The only negative is they don't have arm/leg upgrade slots but you can still use sigils with them (I think). The Revered Defender armor only looks good on Iron Bull - the other Descent armors are bufu ugly. And, of course, you can only use the Trespasser armor (Skin That S____s) on female elves or humans since it's hideous on anyone else, especially male characters.

Today, I began cleaning up some of the quests that are no longer available after reaching Skyhold, so that I can do In Your Heart Shall Burn...either tomorrow or the day after. I'm sick of Haven...too much running around, and holding down "W" is such hard work, you guys. I received two opportunities to soften Leliana, and let them both pass by because being soothing or interfering with Leliana's job would be out of character for my Cadash. I'm aiming for Vivienne to become Divine since she and Cadash are getting along so well, so at least the Murder Nun won't be left in charge

Kara was very lazze fair about the Inquisition in the beginning but was quite...disturbed...by some of the things a hardened L would do. Fortanatly both times I played the game with her I got Divine Cass.

I played it when it first come out, but have forgotten a lot of it. I remember Elfroot & Shards, and a man throwing a goat at a castle. I didn't really like it, but I do like to see others are enthusiastic about the characters, even if I don't know what they're talking about most of the time. With the Queen safe, we were all getting bored hanging around the Arl's estate, so I said, who wants to go the the alienage and watch the elves die of the plague? When there were no takers, I said maybe their imminent death is not the only reason for the unrest, who wants to check that out? So we go there, and when she realizes we are the ones who saved her cousin, this elf tells us what's been going on. I said we would take a look inside the hospice.

Murder Nun? I can see it if you don't soften her. She acts more than a bit touched otherwise. Did you go whole hog on your world state and have her defeated by the Warden? My Cadash decided to talk her down. Garnet was nice but saw Leliana like a cat with it's back arched up. Don't touch her and keep a soft gentle voice. Easy there, Princess McStabby Stab. Too many years with too many jumpy clients that needed the Carta's services. I'm about to fire back up DA:I. I still need to catch up on Josie's dialogue tree, tell Varric to create another Swords and Shields and I need to go talk to Sutherland. He'll be in the tavern by now. Once I finally leave it's off to VR for info on Calpurina. I played Templar side once about 18 months ago so this will almost be like a new quest for me. olnortonHerb farming is a bit of a pain but ignore the damn shards. I hate those things so much. I doesn't help that my first 3 times playing this game I played on PC. Platforming with those controls still makes my eye twitch to this day. I found it to be little more than forced exploration for not enough of a reward. The zone those can unlock is a maze and extremely annoying.

I played it when it first come out, but have forgotten a lot of it. I remember Elfroot & Shards, and a man throwing a goat at a castle. I didn't really like it, but I do like to see others are enthusiastic about the characters, even if I don't now what they're talking about most of the time. You should give it another chance, especially after you do good run-throughs in DAO and DA2 that you want to be part of your world state for DAI. What's jarring is the massive change in aethetics among the three games. The nice thing about your Leliana is that she genuinely looks like a younger version of the Leliana in DAI.

Enslaved those nasty mages. That'll teach them to side with Alexius.

Wow. This was such cool timing that I'm pausing my game to share this with you guys.
I'm knocking out the Chargers v Qun quest as we speak. I just put Solas back into my party for the first time since about level 6. Solas chewed out Gatt for joining the Qun. Then I took care of the last pack of Vints. I'm going to hit the horn but I stopped. The banter between Solas and Bull about Bull being a spy and that other governments don't control what people think and act just fired off.
Curious timing, since I'm about to save the Chargers right about...now.
Edit: I'm just about everyone's best friend in the game now. Except Solas. He's a hard nut (egg?) to crack.

Given that my current PT is a Solasmance, I should've done that! Instead, I treated this episode as a throwaway and had my second string companions with me. My PC did have a thoughtful discussion with Gatt about elven Qunari, which is better than previous PTs where the highlight was Gatt calling Iron Bull Hisrod or "Liar."
