(Tagging vertigomez in this one too. I'm torn between wanting to make it easy for her to find all of these and worry she's going to be flooded with notifications if she ever logs in again.) It... turns out there's a bit more to the story I ended my last post with. Apparently there was only one guard scheduled to patrol through the area Thomas Hawke had probably-technically-illegally helped clear of bandits: that guard was sure if Aveline hadn't cleared the area with Thomas, she'd have died. She was carrying a sack with with the guards' marching orders, and it was heavier than usual. Then she handed it to a guardsman named Donnic, who was going to be patrolling the same area where Tommy was supposed to find Samson that night. Two for one deal. I like it. It was dark by the time Hawke and Aveline reached the district where they were supposed to do both of these nighttime meetings. That also worked out nicely. First, Hawke slaughtered a whole lot of bandits, and found a whole lot of stolen official documents in the sack Donnic was guarding. Someone has some explaining to do. Then Thomas found Samson, who had claimed he was "unable" to help Feynriel, although Hawke figured out this really meant the money wasn't right and bribed Samson into revealing who he'd suggested might help. It turned out Samson sent Feynriel to a sea captain, and was now pretty sure the captain had enslaved both Feynriel and a mage girl Samson had sent in that same direction. So this had turned into a rescue mission. First, though, they stopped off into the Alienage to kill more thugs, take a quick look through Merrill's home (while Thomas Hawkwardly propositioned her) and find a note from something called "The Band Of Three" under a rock. Then it was off to the docks, where they slaughtered an entire crew of probably-pirates, along with a mage girl who'd turned into an abomination in front of them. Afterwards, they dug through the pirates' papers and learned that they'd already sold Feynriel to someone in Darktown. So next stop, the basically-sewers, where the buyer tried to enslave them too. Hawke corrected Danzig's hawkward mistake, and then found a bill of sale that suggested he had to go to the Wounded Coast. Hawke's certainly getting a lot of exercise. Along the way, he killed a bunch of giant spiders and ran into a dwarf named Javaris, who turned this stop into a two-for-one-deal as well: he wanted a bunch of former Qunari who lived on the coast killed. The idea was that Javaris thought he could get in good with the Qunari by killing their outcasts, and that then he could try to negotiate to buy the schematics for their bombs. So, first Hawke trudged through the Slavers' Cave to save Feynriel, killed a bunch of slavers, and suggested Feynriel follow through on his plans to find the Dalish. Then he found the small army of Tal'Vashoth, slaughtered a bunch of them outside, and invaded a cave they'd taken over to slaughter more Tal'Vashoth. Job done. So then Hawke has a whole lot of business back in Kirkwall. First, he went back to the Viscount's Keep to snitch out Captain Jeven. The guy threatened to draw and quarter Aveline for exposing his crimes, because the first stage of grief is denial. The senechal informed them that they'd learned Jeven owed some bad people some money, and declared that after a brief training period, Aveline would become the new captain. Then the party went to the docks to talk with the Qunari: they didn't make a deal with Javaris, but insisted he pay Thomas for his trouble anyway, because Frustration of Purpose is not grounds for rescission of a contract where they're from. Then they finally went to Arianni to tell her her son was okay. She was relieved, and gave Thomas a ring with a slightly better version of the enchantment on a ring he was already wearing. He put the new one on and gave the old one to Merrill, although maybe he should have given her the new one instead, since the new one was made by the Dalish. Edit 3 hours later: Since they were already in the Alienage, they stopped by Merrill's place, and Hawke had a conversation with her about a mugging that took place right outside her door. Kinda weird? Anyway, from there it was on to the Gallows... with two apostate mages in tow. Thomas told the templar who Arianni had involved with her son that Feynriel was okay... and that the other mage, who turned into an abomination and who turns out to have been his daughter, was less than okay. Then they dropped off a map of Occupied Kirkwall and talked to an alchemist who needs a fetch quest done. The Dalish were supposed to know where to find the first bit, and hey, great time to finish that fetch quest that the railroady force had stopped him halfway through last time! So Hawke gathered the things Clara needed for her, and then talked to the Dalish craftsman about where to find ironbark. It turns out it was guarded by darkspawn. I would say that's great practice for the Deep Roads, if Hawke hadn't already helped slaughter his family's way through an army of them on the way out of Lothering. (At least time, the ogre didn't kill any of his siblings.) Edit 19 hours later, because I'd feel weirder double-posting: After that, Thomas and friends headed to Darktown to deliver a package of herbs he'd picked up somewhere (who can even remember?) to someone in Tevinter robes. (I'm not sure I want to know.) Then they went to Hightown to drop off a document defending Orzammar's indefensible system to some traditionalist dwarves who'd lost it, and saw a poster on the way advertising that the Viscount's son Seamus had run off and offering a reward for his safe return. Hawke still isn't quite set-for-life yet, so he headed to the Viscount's keep to discuss what sort of reward that might be. The seneschal was in the middle of discussing that reward with a rather unpleasant woman who nobody thought was going to return Seamus safely. Hawke made sure to ask why the Viscount wasn't sending the guard (and Aveline vigorously agreed) and the seneschal stated that the Viscount would rather make the city guard look weak than acknowledge the Qunari as a threat worth using them against. (Yay for leaders with their heads screwed on straight.) The seneschal told Hawke that he might be able to get the reward if he returned Saemus instead... but by the time he'd gotten to the coast and killed some former Qunari who were in the way, the woman was standing over Seamus's luckily-still-alive body as he knelt by a not-quite-alive Qunari's body. Seamus offered to return willingly if the second group avenged the Qunari, and Hawke might have done it willingly... but before he could decide, the mercenary leader who'd tried to bully him at the Keep decided to kill him for fun. That didn't end well for her. Thomas actually used his first blue dialogue option here, during a lull in the fighting: Seamus wasn't doing well being surrounded by a Hawke-typical pile of bodies, and Hawke tried to help him stay strong. He didn't need to stay strong for very long, though. Soon enough, the entire mercenary band (or mercenary army) was dead and looted, and Seamus was back to the Keep to argue with his father. Hawke immediately noped out of the room to avoid having to take a side, and picked up five gold on his way out. It was getting late, so he decided to head home... and wound up getting into a fight with Sharps' Highwaymen. He slaughtered them all, while a Chantry sister sat bored in the middle ignoring everything going on. (He also picked up a note off one of their bodies saying where their hideout was; both Aveline and Merrill have suggested someone needs to kill the gangsters plaguing Lowtown, and it's started to occur to him that it might be worth keeping Merrill happy, so maybe he'll make use of that note later...) Then, when the other thugs were dead, another thug appeared to ask if the Chantry Sister needed help with anything. The Chantry sister said she needed someone who knew what he was doing, as though Hawke and friends hadn't just killed a small army of muggers in front of her, and agreed to discuss payment in a dark alley nearby. None of Hawke's sarcastic remarks have ever felt quite as real as the one he responded to that with. Edit two days later: So of course Tommy had to try to help her, and he slaughtered the thugs. She thanked him, and admitted she was kind of out of her element here. (Really?) She offered him a job afterwards, and asked him to come to her safehouse. Hawke made a detour to slaughter the boss of Sharp's Highwaymen, and then headed over to talk to her... after slaughtering his way through at least twice as many Highwaymen as he'd killed at their HQ right outside her door. (Figure that one out.) He stepped inside, and the Sister revealed that she wanted a Qunari mage smuggled out of the city through the warrens under the city... and she apparently did not want him into the Circle, where a Chantry Sister is supposed to think mages go. And then Bethany's declaration of sympathy for the poor Qunari basically outed her as a mage, but the sister didn't react at all. This is all setting off Hawke's "there's something not right about this situation" sense, but nothing has made sense since he left Ferelden, so he's not really listening to that sense anymore. Edit 3 days later: He might need to start again, though. After he slaughtered his way through the Undercity's spiders and thugs, he discovered the Sister had left a trail of dead Qunari leading to the exit he'd used. There were Qunari right outside the exit, insisting Hawke surrender the mage to be recollared, because magic was dangerous... and contagious? Thomas tried to reason with them (in a rather sarcastic way) and it eventually came out that Bethany was a mage.... and Thomas's sister. Apparently, the Qunari believed that meant that Hawke's words had demons in them, and they attacked. (Say what you will about the templars, at least they're reacting to the dangers magic actually poses, rather than inventing new ones.) After Hawke was done removing them, he broke the seal on the Qunari mage's body and mouth... and he insisted on killing himself because he might be unknowingly corrupted. Hooray for happy endings. Thomas went back to Petrice's safehouse to find her cleaning it out, and confronted her. She eventually admitted (through a veil of doublespeak) that she was setting them all up to die defending a Qunari mage, hoping that that would inspire the Chantry and the Viscount's office to stop playing nice with the Qunari. The one good thing to say about this is that even though Hawke made clear he was angry and looking for any chance to get Petrice back for this, she still felt obligated to pay him. Yet Another Edit 4 days later: And then it occurred to him that Petrice's house was right next to Gamlen's. Poor woman. Anyway, Thomas decided to go back home. He chanced on an argument between Leandra and Gamlen about their father's will, which Gamlen claimed entitled him to their parents' estate. The fact that he offered no proof inspired Bethany to suggest breaking into the estate Gamlen had gambled away to read it themselves. Thomas thought that was a good idea, but decided to check his mail first. It turned out to have an anonymous letter from a guy concerned with having blood on his hands if Hawke dallied... so Hawke immediately went to the Wounded Coast to see what was so urgent. It turned out that the templar who'd been tracking Feynriel had a bunch of apostates cornered in a cave, and wanted Hawke to convince them to surrender before his significantly-more-jerkish reinforcements got there. Hawke slaughtered his way through their undead army and met with their leader... who decided they must be on the templars' side, and attacked them... with the usual result. Then Hawke agreed to try to persuade the templars that everyone in the cave was dead... and failed. The more-jerkish templars attacked, and the result sucked: Thomas used a healing potion for the first time in that fight and he and Bethany still wound up unconscious before it was over. So Thomas and Bethany went to sleep off their nasty head-wounds from falling, and then invaded their own home later that night. To everyone's surprise, Gamlen turned out not to have legally inherited the property he gambled away.

After a long pause (due to Star Wars - The Old Republic and creating more characters than is healthy), I played a bit more Dragon Age 2 with my mage Alayne Hawke. She is trying to find Feynriel and cleard Lowtown out of thugs (including their leader). Now she helps a friend of Isabelas to get back his cargo, while fighting more thugs in the docks.
Do you remember the knife conversation between Isa and Varric? Normally my Hawke is asking, what the hell they are talking about. This time I had Anders in my group and he asked - very scandalized . My current group is Hawke, Isabela, Varric and Anders - plus Mycroft the Mabari. It works surprisingly well. I probably will switch Anders for Aveline, Carver or Fenris for some quests, since it has it's advantages to have a warrior in the group and I can't go without my two favorite companions, Isa and Varric, for long. I was contemplating to leave Carver behind this time, so that he might become a templar. But he is so sad and angry then, so I will bring him and Anders to the Deep Roads, so that Carver can become a Grey Warden.
My group (I really love that Ciri armor, Alayne is wearing. I like the one, Isa is wearing too, but it has a slightly different skin coloration, so Isas face looks different from the rest of her body)

(Tagging vertigomez so she can find this one too.) I don't exactly remember how Thomas Hawke wound up in the Gallows, but he was there when I loaded. Almost to the exit, but he turned around and went to explore anyway. He wound up finding another note from the "Band of Three." Anyway, then he went home, and Gamlen told him to check the writing desk for another letter. (He also complained that Tommy gets more of them than Gamlen does. Can't imagine why.) Anyway, there was one from Athenril saying that Hawke might be able to make some money working for a man named Hubert, who owns a mine called the "Bone Pit." Hawke went to Hightown to meet with the man, and he explained that his lazy Ferelden workers (lolwut?) didn't want to work, and weren't explaining why. So Hawke traveled to the Bone Pit, and found the skeleton of an outlaw named... "Bearded Beast?" (Were all the good ones taken?) Anyway, he picked some elfroot, slaughtered some looters, and eventually made his way into the mines. He was immediately confronted by dragonlings. The dragonlings were immediately confronted by two witches, a shield, and a quiver full of arrows. The four slaughtered their way through the mines, picking up the pommel of a guardswoman's sword along the way, and eventually found a survivor. The survivor advised them not to travel further, because there was an extremely large dragon waiting for them. Merrill asked Hawke if they could travel that way anyway, because she'd never seen an extremely large dragon, and Hawke couldn't say no to such a cute face. This was the second fight Thomas and friends had to use healing potions. Is that a good thing, or should he have been able to pull this off without them? But at least they all stayed conscious this time. Anyway, the dragon died, and Hawke took its fang. He then went to the docks to give the Bearded Beast to a perfect stranger, who took it gratefully. While there, he chanced upon a noble fighting off assassins. The noble turned out to be Renvil Harrowmont, the last of his house. He explained that the entire rest of his family had been slaughtered after their patriarch failed to take the throne, because the current King was not particularly happy at having been opposed. He asked Thomas to kill the assassins after him so that he could escape to Rivain. Hawke agreed, and when the one of the assasssins asked Hawke to turn on Renvil, he threw the offer back in the assassin's face... with an arrow attached. Three mass-slaughters-of-carta-thugs later, the way was clear, and Renvil paid him what he could spare with the promise of more later. Then Hawke went to the Gallows to deliver the dragon's fang to the same herbalist who'd wanted the ironbark, and the Viscount's Keep to give Guardswoman Eustice her pommel back. While at the Keep, he took the opportunity to burgle the seneschal's office, and found another note from the Band of Three... though he still doesn't quite get what the hell that is. He gets that they're researching something that happened back when Tevinter owned the place? And finally, he went back to Hubert, and informed him that the Bone Pit is no longer Boned. Hubert said that he'd heard there were dragons involved, and cuffed the man who'd told him that for lying. Hawke told him, as non-judgmentally as he could, that the man hadn't been lying. Hubert offered Hawke a partnership in the mine, and Hawke agreed, partially out of a desire to advocate of the workers. With that accomplished, he went to Lowtown to find said workers and ask them back into the mine. He did this by telling them (without a trace of his usual smartassery,) that the mine was safe and that he'd ensure it would stay that way.

I'd completely forgotten about that, but yeah. Flemeth's High Dragon form is actually appreciably larger than the Mature Dragon in the Bone Pit. Unless she means a real dragon? Edit: Anyway, since Thomas Hawke was in Lowtown for this anyway, he decided to stop in at home real quick. Gamlen told him there was another letter at the desk, and it turned out to have been from the smuggler he'd worked for, apologizing for trying to keep him longer than the indenture and offering properly-compensated work. He stopped in at Hightown, bringing Varric along instead of Aveline, even though this meant the party would be composed of two archers, two mages, and no meatshields. Athenril told him that some stolen goods she'd meant to sell to the Carta had gone missing, along with the runners carrying them. Hawke agreed to find them. It was night by the time he got to the dock, and someone (I don't remember who) noted that the neighborhood wasn't exactly safe after dark. The coterie showed up immediately afterwards to prove (her?) right. The fight went surprisingly well for one where Hawke didn't have anyone whose main skill was taking a hit. At any rate, Hawke saved the cargo and the young boy, but seeing that he was a bit young for this, decided to let the boy flee the city with the cargo. After that, Hawke combed the docks to see if he could find the gang responsible for most of the danger in the neighborhood, which turned out to be the Redwater Raiders. He slaughtered a whole bunch of them, hoping that one would have a hint as to where their hideout was... but nothing doing. He eventually just went back to Athenril and told her that the Coterie had stolen the cargo; Athenril seems to have bought it. On his way out of the neighborhood, Hawke ran into a magistrate who asked him to recover a criminal "on the sly." Interesting way of putting it... and interesting way to retrieve a criminal. What's more interesting is that Hawke requested the magistrate tell him what the convict did three times, and each time he responded that all Hawke needs to know is he escaped. (In the exact same words, oddly enough.) Hawke's "this situation isn't right" sense is going off again. (Tagging vertigomez because I still haven't forgotten she requested I thoroughly document this playthrough.)

So, I baited the Abyssal High Dragon but did NOT kill her. I was still able to get the 2 mosaic pieces from the cave that opens up though. I went back solo to avoid having squadmates take unauthorized aggressive action. She wasn't there but she flew back in a second time and when she landed, she hit the last stone blocking the way with her big dragon butt. Unfortunately, Frederic's dialogue doesn't progess unless you fight her so I am unable to recruit him in this scenario.
I am also headcanoning that I did NOT have to trudge all the way back to Skyhold just to give the go order to attack Adamant, and then go allllllll the way back to the Approach. Obviously we made plans ahead of time and, once the area was secure, gave a nearby Cullen and army the order to march. So, that's what I'll be doing next.
Yesterday I cleared Dirthamen's Temple, the rest of the Plains (left Gamordan Stormrider to play in the swamp), and today cleared the rest of the Approach. Servis was sent back to Skyhold to await judgment (he'll be recruited).

Obviously we made plans ahead of time and, once the area was secure, gave a nearby Cullen and army the order to march. So, that's what I'll be doing next. It almost sounds like you don't think Inquisitor has all the time in the world to travel! I wish we had access to war table at least from keeps.

(Tagging vertigomez again because she's the one who requested I go into detail about my first DA2 playthrough, so I want her to be able to find all of these. Explaining this again because given the way notifications work on this site, she's probably going to read the last one of these first.) So after that conversation with the magistrate, Thomas Hawke went back to Merrill's house to see if she was feeling talkative again. She wasn't. But Hawke used the horn by her door to switch Varric out for his favorite/only plate-armored meatshield, so the trip was hardly wasted. Hawke headed over to the ruins Magistrate Vanard told him to search, and found guards waiting outside them... and an elven merchant who accused them of not doing their jobs. Apparently the criminal he was sent after was a serial killer who exclusively targeted elves (including the merchant's own daughter) and who wasn't getting much attention from the powers-that-be as a result. Except... he absolutely was getting official attention. If the guards didn't care at all, why would the ruin be surrounded, and why would Vanard go to the effort of sending Tommy? But Elren was kind of right, too: it was weird that the guards were going to that much effort, if the only victims were elven. It's not fair for the system to completely ignore a serial killer because he's only attacking elves, but it's exactly what you'd expect the system would do... and it wasn't. Anyway, Hawke agreed with the elf that the courts were probably not going to punish this criminal as he deserved, so he agreed to do it himself. He went into the ruins intent on doing just that, and after a whole bunch of undead and spiders (plus a small band of very unlucky bandits,) he came across... the elven girl he'd been told was likely dead. She asked him to spare her kidnapper Kelder, because he was possessed by demons that forced him to do those horrible things. Hawke was pretty sure he didn't buy it. Thomas and friends slaughtered one more wave of undead, and found the killer waiting for him. The killer said that he was possessed, but that the Circle claimed he wasn't; he claimed that there were demons in his head forcing him to kill elven children for "being too beautiful." He also revealed that he was the son of the magistrate who'd ordered him quietly retrieved... which explained a lot of things that had previously needed it. What Hawke could gather was that Kelder had some sort of major biological malfunction that made him kill elven children, that Kelder had tried to stop himself from killing, and that Kelder's father had tried to help keep him under control too. They both failed, and that was why Hawke was involved. So now Kelder wanted Hawke to kill him to prevent him from killing anyone else. Made sense to Hawke. The elven father was pleasantly surprised to find that his daughter was still alive, and that her kidnapper was less than so. He left, and the guards did too... after openly doubting Thomas's wisdom in defying the magistrate. Hawke went to the Gallows to deliver a venom sac from one of the spiders to the herbalist, who said he now had all he needed. With that accomplished, Hawke went back to Hightown to speak with Vanard... who advised him to flee the city and never return. Thomas doubted that was necessary. Anyway, then Thomas went back to Bartrand to antagonize him a bit more, making sure to mention that he intended to become a partner on the expedition. Bartrand correctly assumed this was Varric's idea, and got kind of grouchy about it. (You make one little assumption about dwarves and alcohol and he never forgets it.) Then Hawke headed to the docks: it was getting late in the day, and Hawke was hoping he could get a good crack at the gang that roved the docks at night this time. And sure enough, the second band of Redwater Raiders Hawke and friends slaughtered that night (the third total) had a note pointing to a warehouse as the gang's HQ. Thomas and friends broke in, and met a respectable number of raiders... led by an elven mage. Huh. Good day for elven empowerment today, or it would have been if he hadn't wound up dead. The fight dragged on a bit, but mostly went smoothly... apart from two Redwater Raider archers sneaking in through the entrance most of the way through the fight and putting enough arrows in Bethany that she needed a healing potion to keep her feet. (She couldn't just cast Heal, since that was on cooldown.) Luckily, one of those archers was carrying a Healing Potion, so Hawke had as many potions after the fight as he'd had before it.

Let me just... ... Ok, I feel better. After trying to get back to my mage elf girl, I decided to scrap her and go with what I hope will be my canon pt of DAI. I've been wondering why - despite liking my current canon Inquisitor - I couldn't commit to her. I realised it's because she just doesn't fit it. She works as solo DAI character, but not as part of my DA canon. After revising some choices I was still on the fence with, I went with male elf rogue, with Dorian romance in mind. So, I created elf I was able to get to Haven, went thru prologue with him, then spent way too much time adjusting his look until I got something I like. Getting back from beauty trip, I hit Hinterlands, stalled my Val Royeaux visit to the point where Solas started to urge me to go there, tried not to get into screaming contest with old Chantry ladies, visited mages in Redcliffe and - after time travel shenanigans - allied with mages. I rarely go this route, but it fits Aien's character. Early Dorian is nice bonus. Now I think whether to hit Skyhold or explore a bit more. But there are some quests I'd like to unlock and that Cole approval I could get...Oh, and that screaming at the beginning? I just needed to vent. Let me explain. Whenever I play mage, I try to get specialization items before Skyhold, but rarely manage to get even some. I'm playing rogue? 10 minutes in Hinterlands and I have 3 Wisp Essences I'd need for KE and 3 Nevarran Skulls I'd need for Necromancer. Trolling much, game? It's a known fact the game never gives you items for your own specialization before first overloading you with all you need for every other one. It's almost like whatever algorithm was used to drop them ended up inverted or something. One reason I use the Crestwood store mod - I can buy them as soon as I solve Crestwood's undead problem.

So, I baited the Abyssal High Dragon but did NOT kill her. I was still able to get the 2 mosaic pieces from the cave that opens up though. I went back solo to avoid having squadmates take unauthorized aggressive action. She wasn't there but she flew back in a second time and when she landed, she hit the last stone blocking the way with her big dragon butt. Unfortunately, Frederic's dialogue doesn't progess unless you fight her so I am unable to recruit him in this scenario.
I am also headcanoning that I did NOT have to trudge all the way back to Skyhold just to give the go order to attack Adamant, and then go allllllll the way back to the Approach. Obviously we made plans ahead of time and, once the area was secure, gave a nearby Cullen and army the order to march. So, that's what I'll be doing next.
Yesterday I cleared Dirthamen's Temple, the rest of the Plains (left Gamordan Stormrider to play in the swamp), and today cleared the rest of the Approach. Servis was sent back to Skyhold to await judgment (he'll be recruited).
There are combat abilities that can clear the rubble as well, like Warrior's Chain Throw or Rogues bladed Uppercut (not sure what the abilities are called at this very moment, I'll look it up) so you don't have to rely on Mrs. Abyssal to open the way for you.

(Tagging vertigomez again because she's the one who requested I go into detail about my first DA2 playthrough, so I want her to be able to find all of these. Explaining this again because given the way notifications work on this site, she's probably going to read the last one of these first.) After Thomas Hawke slaughtered his second band of lunatics, he decided that it might be worth telling someone about it. So he headed over to the Hanged Man to brag about it, and because he might as well head to Varric's room to hear more details about Varric's plans. Varric told Thomas that one of the things he was missing was a decent Deep Roads entrance, not too infested with darkspawn and yet not too looted. Bartrand had thought he'd found one, but it was unsuitable. Varric figured that if anyone would know, it'd be a Warden, and there was supposed to be one hiding among the Ferelden refugees. So Hawke headed to a Ferelden Imports shop in Lowtown to ask after him. It took some doing to get the shopkeeper to tell him where to go: she was afraid he was a templar informer. Hawke eventually persuaded her to tell him where to find the healer (whose name appears to be Anders), and she said to find him in Darktown. But first he had to persuade a band of armed Fereldens not to come at him right outside the shop: they thought he was a Templar informer. Bethany persuaded them that they were just Fereldens trying to make their way, same as the mob. The mob apologized and voiced their praises of King Alistair, as if Jeeves Tabris had only put one monarch on the Ferelden throne. So next Thomas headed to Darktown, and found the healer putting a lot of effort into healing a boy, such that he was staggering in exhaustion afterwards. Then he suddenly turned around with all his faculties restored and said "I have made this place a sanctuary of healing and salvation! Why do you threaten it?" What is it about my obviously-a-rogue who is constantly accompanied by two apostates that screams "templar informer?" Tommy persuaded Anders that this was about his time with the Wardens, and furthermore that he had no intention of sending Anders back to them. Anders admitted that he had maps of the Deep Roads, and that those maps might make the expedition easier in a way that could save lives, but said that he wasn't going to hand them over because he doesn't like thinking about the Deep Roads. (Lolwut?) But he agreed that he might hand them over if Hawke, who already had worries related to the templars, accompanied him to the Chantry that night to help spring a mage from Circle custody. Hawke kind of had to agree to it given the stakes, so he went back home to wait for nightfall. While he was there, Gamlen informed Hawke of another letter, and complained again that Hawke gets more than he does. (Hawke still can't imagine why that'd be the case.) It was another one from Athenril, who told him that there was someone named Anso offering work in Lowtown that night. Hawke actually got out the door with Aveline in tow before he realized that Aveline probably wouldn't be happy to be involved in whatever Athenril was doing, so he headed to Merrill's place to use the horn there to swap her out for Varric. Anso was closer than the Chantry, so Hawke headed there first. Anso claimed that there was someone holding smuggled lyrium for him in the Alienage, and that they'd probably give it right up, but to be ready for a fight anyway. Sure enough, there was one... but there was no smuggled lyrium. There was, however, an ambush waiting outside. Hawke and company handled it remarkably well for a group without a meatshield. Then a thug showed up to tell them what a mistake they'd made getting involved with this, and order more thugs after them... but a strangely tattooed elf had already killed the other thugs, and slaughtered the lead thug without much effort. The elf, Fenris, explained that Anso was actually recruiting backup for him. Fenris was a slave who escaped from a Tevinter magister named Danarius, and the markings gave him magical abilities that made him valuable enough to pursue all the way to Kirkwall. Fenris was pretty sure the magister was giving this task his personal attention, and asked that Hawke and company accompany him to Hightown that night to deal with Danarius. Hawke already had a prior engagement there, so why not agree? But first he popped back into Merrill's house, since they were already conveniently in the Alienage and Hawke figured Aveline would likely approve of their plan to wipe out a Tevinter slavemaster's retinue. So they set off for Hightown... and were attacked by people pretending to be guards. Hawke and Aveline slaughtered them all fairly quickly, and then they went to Danarius's mansion, where Fenris insisted on taking Aveline's place in the party. Thomas handed Fenris a maul to replace his greatsword, and then the fun started. Danarius turned out to have filled the mansion with shades and rage demons, which were fairly easy to take down... apart from a nervous moment where some shades appeared behind the party and knocked Bethany unconsious. But after a short rest and an injury kit, she was okay. And after they finished slaughtering the spirits, including one that had possessed the corpse of a mage, the house was empty. Fenris agreed to let Hawke have everything in the house, and waited outside for him to finish looting. Once there, Fenris expounded on his hatred and fear of magic, to the Hawke siblings' mild annoyance: such gratitude to the woman who almost died for him. It's not enough that Danarius is throwing shade at her, now Fenris has to do it too? Fenris eventually agreed that he was willing to spend time with them anyway, and Hawke decided to take him to the Chantry for laughs. But first... ... Hawke thought it might be worth looking around for more of those goons who were pretending to be guards, figuring that they might be part of a larger organization that had a hideout somewhere nearby. Sure enough, there were more waiting around to die, but none of them had any notes about where the gang might be hiding. It's starting to look like he always finds a note on the third bunch of thugs from each gang, but why would it always work out that way? It's too much for coincidence. Is the Maker screwing with him, or are the gangs deliberately leaking the information to him if he slaughters enough of them? At any rate, Hawke had only slaughtered two of these bunches of creeps, so no note. He decided to leave the faux-police for later and just head to the Chantry with the mana-phobic former slave in tow, so that they could save a mage together. I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship.

Thomas Hawke and his friends (plus Fenris) got there shortly after the mage in question did, and didn't see any templars following him... but the mage was Tranquil, and had been persuaded to see the system as worth upholding. Also, it turned out there were templars following him. And Anders turned out to not have the very best self control. After the group was done killing templars (and to Hawke's disappointment, that didn't annoy Fenris even one little bit) Karl regained a little bit of his former self and asked Anders to kill him. Thomas agreed that that was probably for the best, and Anders did it. The group went back to the clinic, and Anders explained that he was possessed... not by a demon, but by a benevolent spirit. Or, a spirit who had been benevolent: Anders is pretty sure he's done something unpleasant to that spirit. Well, the night was still young, so Thomas and friends decided to go hunting the faux-fuzz in Hightown again. They found some... but they didn't get the note Hawke was hoping for. Well, it's not like it wasn't already a productive enough night. At any rate, Hawke decided to go back to the Bone Pit: Fenris could stand to do some sightseeing, and Hawke could stand to do some looting. He wound up finding a letter from one of the old Tevinter overseers about how thin the Veil was (and how much horrible stuff the Tevinters had done to get it to that point,) and a letter from the Band of Three noting that the area's mineral wealth was only discovered after Tevinter had sunk a whole lot of money into building the city up (which meant that that can't be why they put so much money into building Hightown and the Gallows.) This all seems to be hinting at something mega-creepy, but Hawke doesn't have enough hints to know what it is. Thomas returned to Hightown, and this time the sun was shining, so no fake-guards to be found: only real ones, and a bounty notice from someone named Ghyslain who'd said his wife had left him. Hawke was curious enough about what had happened, and eager enough for money, that he decided to investigate. It turned out the guy was a sexist controlling dingbat, but it sounded like his wife might be in real danger, and if his in-laws had thought he had done anything untoward to his wife then he might be too. So Hawke agreed to look for her, and put some effort into persuading her to return to him. Edit: And his investigations so far haven't convinced him he was wrong to fear. Thomas visited a prostitute who Ghyslain said Ninette had been spending time with, an elf named Jethann, and Jethann said that he thought/hoped Ninette had just moved out away from her husband. But she hadn't been by to say goodbye to him; maybe it's presumptuous on his part to think she would, and he makes clear that he knows he's only providing a service... but that's still one more person who hasn't heard from her recently. Perhaps more worryingly, Hawke wasn't the first to ask Jethann about her: there was a templar by the name of Emeric investigating the disappearance as well. Jethann is pretty sure Ninette wasn't a mage (apart from the spell she cast on him) but then why is a templar investigating her? Edit2: So Hawke went back to Darktown, and had a chat with Anders while he was there, quickly shutting down the conversation when it looked like Anders was getting his hopes up for something more than professional. Then Hawke went down the tunnels to Evendarkertown to see if he could find Emeric, and had to slaughter a bunch of locals while he was there. That didn't feel too great, but at least it didn't take long. Anyway, Emeric revealed that he had a lot of the same suspicions that Hawke did, which wasn't encouraging. Even less encouraging, the reason the templar was investigating was that other women were missing... including a Circle mage. So we could be dealing with a serial killer dangerous enough to take on a properly trained mage. Yippee. He also gave Hawke a lead: he told him to search a Foundry in Lowtown. That made Hawke's to-do list, of course, but first he went back to Hightown to slaughter more Piggy Pretenders, and finally got that note he was looking for leading to their hideout... or "barracks." He went there (getting jumped one more time in the street in the process) and killed their "captain." So that's finally handled. He went to the Hanged Man to report it... and as soon as he walked in the door he got to watch a woman beat up three men who were all larger than she was and fighting dirty. Nice. Hawke went over to introduce himself, and she introduced herself as Isabela. She bragged that she'd bagged the Hero of Ferelden... and asked a favor, because nobody in this town can take care of their own messes. (Isabela thinks its something in the water.) Isabela wanted Hawke to referee her duel with a man named Hayder in Hightown that night. He agreed to do it, and then went upstairs to report that the Sham Swine were slaughtered before he headed out to the Foundry. He got a small glimpse of a mage, who quickly fled as demons showed up to slow Hawke down. The mage was long gone by the time Thomas and friends had handled the distraction, but he'd left behind a bag with bones and a severed hand. Merrill correctly noted that a missing hand didn't mean a dead person, since you can survive with a missing hand... but she forgot (or neglected) to mention that it's still not a good sign. Edit3: Anyway, that meant it was off to help referee Isabela's duel... which turned out to be entirely necessary when the man she was supposed to duel didn't show up, and a bunch of thugs did. Isabela told him to search the bodies (as if she thought Tommy needed to be told to loot his kills) and it turned out he was hiding in the Chantry. Hawke set off for the Chantry... he thought. It turned out he'd gone up the wrong big flight of stairs and wound up at the Viscount's Keep. And while he was there, he got attacked by the Guardsman Pretenders? He'd thought he was done with those idiots. Anyway, Hawke killed them, and then actually headed for the Chantry. At the foot of the big flight of stairs, he got attacked by more of Hayder's thugs... and more Fauxlice Officers. They fought their way into the Chantry, and confronted Hayder, who proceeded to accost Isabela for freeing slaves owned by their employer. (Which is a great way to get Hawke's sympathy.) Isabela eventually got talking and threw a knife... at the second-in-command of the thugs. Instead of the guy with the greatsword who proceeded to keep his feet for about a minute of the entire party pounding on him. Great choice there, Izzy. Well, didn't matter much: they all died, including the reinforcements who came shortly afterwards, and Isabela is now a member of team Hawke. (She also tried to get into his pants... but I'm not sure if Hawke's going to go for that.) Edit4: With that accomplished, Hawke stayed in Hightown and waited for daybreak so that he could tell Ghyslain what had happened to his wife... but was sidetracked by an attractive woman begging a templar to tell her what had happened to her brother. She asked Hawke to ask after said templar if he ever went to the Gallows, and he went straight off. On the way in, Fenris asked if it was wise to bring apostate mages into the Circle, but Hawke said there's no way they'd be noticed among the hundreds of mage already there. Fenris then warned Hawke that if it weren't for the templars, Southern Thedas could wind up much like Tevinter, and Hawke responded that treating every mage like a criminal wasn't the answer. There we are: now Fenris is starting to get irritated with Hawke. With that distraction over, Hawke asked after Templar Recruit Keran, and received some not-particularly-credible rumors about Knight-Commander Meredith purging her own men... as well as a lead. Keran wasn't the only templar to vanish recently, but one of them is back. He went outside Kirkwall to "clear his head," and Knight-Captain Cullen decided to follow him. Anyway, then Hawke started the not-particularly-pleasant task of informing Emeric, Ghyslain, and Jethann that the women who were taken were almost certainly dead... which was not made any more pleasant by Hawke's sarcastic, tactless ass-hattery.

Continued DAI adventures. Before starting In Your Heart Shall Burn, I decided to clear a bit more Hinterlands, with Master Dennet's and Vale's recruitments being my main goals. After doing just that (and avoiding Hafter's Woods like plague, I wasn't mentally prepered for it but tbh you never are), I started In Your Heart Shall Burn and reached Skyhold. Of course that means myriad of quests and cutscenes. Help.Finally done with that, it was time to set new goals. Specialization and clearing Hinterlands before starting another main quest. Didn't bother with anything in Crestwood aside from 3 assassins. No need for clearing rift in the lake for now, since I got my Deathroot from war table missions. Then, Hinterlands... and Hafter's Woods... You know, I joke a lot about it, but dang it, first group of bandits after stepping in and we're already mauled by a bear. Next group (I was entering thru the passage from Lake Luthias, there are two bandit barricades), mauled by bear again. Want to set up camp? 3 great bears and two normal ones. And that's just "memorable" meetings. Entering Hafter's Woods be like... Plus of course bandits use some teleportation magic, since after closing one of the rifts, I just turned the corner and they already set up camp in the same place. And here I almost forgot why - when I play rogue - I usually just leave everyone behind and stealth thru that place Since I already set up camps in Crestwood, I decided to meet warden ally as well. Gotta love how pissed Hawke gets after the Calling is mentioned. Permanent scowl on. Also, I have Loghain in my current world state and I find it interesting that Hawke smiles at him when he talks how during the Fifth Blight - without the Wardens - there would be no Ferelden. Almost like she was proud he admitted that. Anyway, 30 power collected, Halamshiral next.

So, next thing on the list: Thomas Hawke and his friends headed out of town to see if they could find Wilmod. They found him... in the middle of getting the crap kicked out of him by another templar. The templar eventually gave up on beating whatever he wanted out of Wilmod, and just drew his sword... at which point Thomas pointed out that he'd thought templars only treated mages that way. (Bethany had the expected reaction to her idiot brother snarking at a violent templar.) The templar tried to tell them to leave... and then Wilmod interrupted by giving a "puny humans" speech and summoning some possessed mages. (Let's not think too hard about that.) Anyway, that fight went as well for Wilmod as it was going to, and then the non-possessed templar (who introduced himself as Knight-Captain Cullen) decided to slow down to talk with his rescuers about the world as he saw it. One of the first things he did was to say that "mages can't be our friends," and Hawke retorted that he had friends who were mages. (He didn't have to name names, since Bethany and Merrill had both been throwing fire, ice, and entropic horror energy at the demons right where Cullen could see them.) More relevantly, Cullen dismissed the idea that Meredith had a deadly initiation ritual for her recruits (like that rumor made sense anyway) and said that he was afraid Keran (the recruit Hawke had originally been searching for) might be in danger too. Cullen said that both of those men had recently been to the Blooming Rose, which Tommy had just come from since he'd had to deliver the news of Ninette's almost-certain passing to Jethann. (Wouldn't it have been great if he'd known he could put that off for later?) But anyway, Hawke went back, and had a chat with the front desk girl. She consulted the ledger, and said that both men had been with a woman who called herself "Idunna, the Exotic Wonder From The East..." because it sounded better than "Idunna, the Tramp From Darktown." But of course, there's no way that's relevant... Edit: Actually, it turned out it was. Idunna mind-controlled Hawke into telling her who'd pointed him to her, and threatened to "deal with her later." Then she tried to make Hawke slice his own throat, only failing because Bethany stepped in to break Idunna's hold. Hawke got every bit of information on the conspiracy Idunna had, including the location of their hideout under Darktown, and then told her to sit tight and wait for the templars. (As much as Hawke hates their way of dealing with mages, sending her to them seemed more merciful than the only other option.) Then he headed to Evendarkertown himself, and he and his team slaughtered their way through demons and walking corpses until they finally reached a very obvious blood mage (seriously, is she trying to look like she bathes in the stuff?) who said the templars should be working for the mages. The group proceeded to kill her too, and release Keran from the prison he was in. Merrill tested him for possession, and then they let him go. Edit2: Then the group took one of the grimoires they'd found in the hideout to Lowtown, and sold it to a local mage. And since they were already in Lowtown, Hawke stopped in to the Hanged Man to talk to Isabela, and she pointed him to a former raider named Martin who was looking for help. Martin said his former boss Ianto had had some herbs stolen from him. Hawke decided to take Isabela and Anders along for this one instead of Bethany and Merrill, just to get a feel for their abilities. It turned out they were pretty good... although Isabela turned out not to be a great judge of character: she thought Hawke needed to be told that "if we kill them, we get their stuff." It turned out the "herbs" Hawke was recovering were poisons. Hawke went back to Martin to confront him, and he said he was planning to sell them through official and legitimate channels. Hawke wasn't sure what that meant, but he supposed poisons would be useful if you were a farmer who wanted a wild animal dead, so he decided to tell Martin where to find the cargo. From there he went to the Gallows to report to Knight-Captain Cullen. They had another argument as to whether or not the system was generally a good thing, before eventually coming around to the question of what to do with Keran; Cullen suggested that maybe Keran shouldn't be a templar if there's some question as to whether or not he's possessed, but Hawke revealed that they'd tested him, and he was clean. Cullen specifically asked not to be told how they knew that, but allowed Keran to remain a Templar-Recruit. Edit3: Anyway, now it's almost time to go into the Deep Roads and be set for life... but first, Tommy thought he should do a final sweep for crafting materials to make sure he didn't miss any. So far he's found some Deathroot in the Undercity, some lyrium in the cavern where the Tal'Vashoth camp, some Spindleweed in Lowtown and on the Wounded Coast, and some Elfroot also on the Wounded Coast. He also found some the remains of the outlaw "Half-Braid Silsam" in the Undercity (at least it wasn't "Bearded Beast") and returned them to a Dalish relative of his on Sundermount. And while he was exploring the Wounded Coast, he also found a dead messenger carrying a Warden communique from Avernus and Jeeves, and a potion that he used to boost his Dexterity and his Cunning by one point each. He also got a letter advertising a shady financial opportunity, and took Isabela along figuring that it would be a fun criminal enterprise they'd both enjoy... only to realize that the "opportunity" was a loan-shark who was hoping to give Hawke the fifty sovereigns he needed to buy his way onto the expedition. Hawke has about seventy sovereigns now, so there's no reason to take that deal; he's not even sure why the loan shark is offering it.

Back to DAI....
Stormed Adamant and ended up in the Fade....again. Team was Lukas, Blackwall, Varric, and Dorian. Escaped the Fade, left Stroud behind, then recruited what was left of the Wardens to help fight bad guys.
Post-Adamant judgments: Erimond went to the Wardens (thought about going tranquil on his sorry mug but since Lukas had been quite against the practice when talking to Cass about the Seekers, I decided it wouldn't work this PT); Ser Ruth went to the Deep Roads and took up arms with the Legion of the Dead; and Servis was recruited for his, er....service.
I then spent way too much time sorting inventory, sold everything I didn't want to the Crestwood merchant with bottomless pockets of gold, then moved on the Storm Coat to kill more darkspawn. Since the final hole in the ground was right next to the new Deep Roads entrance created by the Descent earthquake, next up will be heading waaay underground to see what's what there.
I was hoping I'd hit level 16 first so I could do Red Water also, but I guess that will have to wait until we get back. I plan to stock up on dragon materials once the first camp is set up.

Been thinking about finally getting that Platinum trophy with a character I have long been wanting to play: a female Qunari Knight-Enchanter romancing Iron Bull. But I don't know if I wanna go through the hassle of making a female Qunari look even remotely good I tried before and failed many times. Also failed many times trying to get that Platinum, so I don't know. Also kinda need to have the Superb Amulet of Agression, which is only available through trials and I don't even know if it works as effectively as I want it to. We'll see, I have already made an excel spreadsheet which is usually a good indication it will happen

Inquisitor Lavellan has been busy for the past couple of days. First, WEWH. Took Vivienne, Dorian and Bull. I was tempted to take Sera in Vivienne's place, but figured one mischievous elf in Winter Palace was enough. Right away missed one Caprice Coin (I was certain I picked it up, but later realised I only found it, not picked it up), so gave up on that side quest. Hallas and secrets were no problem, got all of them. The more I play the funnier I find the fact that even after almost 5 years since my last playthrough I still remember where to turn to find things. It's especially noticeable with loot in strange places. I make beeline for it because I'm sure it's there. Anyway, unlocked both public truce (ending I was planning to pick) and reconciliation (because the more I played, the more I realised it might fit Aien better), and in the end picked reconciliation. Florianne was chained and sent to await her judgement (he might have murder knifed her if not for the fact that humiliating her was way worse punishment for petty Orlesian as her, farm work!). Here GeForce Experience decided to show me middle finger and stopped making screenshots. Without my knowledge. So I missed Dorian dance, all post-WEWH cutscenes and whole Crestwood worth of screenshots After WEWH party cleared Crestwood (as I mentioned). I forgot I planned to sent mayor to the Wardens, so he had to wait for his judgement. Poor Cole got shush'ed by Command. Then Exalted Plains. The only quest I didn't finish is The Spoils of Desecration, so to get to Unadin Grotto I had to use good, old mount-dismount trick. Done with my least favourite area in DAI, I was itching to get to Western Approach and push HLTA, but decided to hit Storm Coast before that, since I had Sutherland's company to save. Ran right to them and, after saving best Inquisition company, I cleared the rest of the Coast, including Red Templars. Only then I hit Western Approach. Cleared the area around the camp, mines, Still Ruins, went to meet Frederick of Serault, establish camp there and clear area where Abyssal will appear in the future. After meeting with Hawke and Loghain, it was time to return to Skyhold and start assault on Adamant. Before HLTA, Solas decided to play trick on me and, while I was entering his rotunda, floor didn't load properly and had wonderful trip to Skyhold's foundations. The music that starts playing didn't help. Especially if it keeps playing when you approach war room and listen to supposedly serious talk between Varric and Hawke... Last but not least, HLTA. Took residend Fade expert Solas, Dorian and Blackwall. I was initially planning to take Cassandra, but I changed my mind on selection screen. Part of me regrets it, since I prefer her post-HTLA talk if she was in the Fade, but at the same time I just feel like taking Blackwall is right (without meta-knowledge). Anyway, while progressing thru Adamant, I managed to convince some Wardens to stand down, then convince some more to turn against Erimond and after some fighting and chasing, party ended up in the Fade. Aien may or may not told Hawke and Loghain to shut up (wish I could do that without "sweet Maker", but I'll let it slide). In the end, Loghain sacrificed himself to let others escape and the Wardens joined the Inquisition. Then GeForce Experience decided to stop working again, fortunately this time I caught it rather quickly, so I only missed part of last scene with Leliana and judgements. Erimond lost his head, Ser Ruth was send to Deep Roads and mayor joined the Wardens. After getting screenshots to work again I also talked with companions and was planning to finish Leliana's quest, but they stopped working again and I decided to stop for now. Next are post-HLTA companion quests, the rest of Western Approach and it's time to finally start - and finish - Before the Dawn. Knowing me, once I enter Emerald Graves and Emprise du Lion, I'll just clear them as well. One thing I noticed in this pt that I didn't before is that - if you have Loghain in Skyhold - if you talk with Threnn, she'll say she talked to him and that he remembers her. Cool detail I failed to notice before since I rarely talk to her (and the rest of Haven staff) after initial Skyhold tour.
