Thomas Hawke was kinda surprised when he ran across a bunch of undead on the Wounded Coast on the way to the Tal'Vashoth camp. Not too surprised, since that can happen anywhwere, but he hadn't run across any other undead on the coast.
If they'd had horns, he'd probably assume they were the Tal'Vashoth he'd been busily killing over the years, here for revenge.
He wasn't very surprised when a second wave of undead rose after they'd slaughtered the first one. At this point, multiple waves of enemies in a single encounter is just how he rolls.
The third wave surprised him a little. And then the fourth had an Arcane Horror attached to it.
Uh oh.
Thomas immediately hit the undead mage with Pinning Shot while Merrill started using her blood to substitute for her depleted mana. Thomas used Mark of Death on it while Merrill closed to Cone of Cold range and froze the monster, and the two mooks closest to it.
Merrill wound up draining herself more than halfway throwing spells at the monster, and Aveline wound up getting shaken up about as much by tanking blows from the monsters everyone else was ignoring. But the most dangerous thing there died, and the remaining minions didn't last long after that.
It was only after it had gone down that Thomas wondered if the party had just killed the abomination mentioned in that scroll he'd picked up.
Anyway, Thomas took the long-dead mage's belt and gave it to Aveline. The belt had some life-boosting enchantments, and he brings her around because she's hard to put down. It only makes sense. (If you can get over the horrible place it came from.) Then he continued to the Tal'Vashoth camp...
... or where they had been camped. They seemed to have moved over to the other camp, the camp where he'd found them. But they left behind another pile of bones with a Qunari blade in it.
Maybe the Arishok had sent two men over to try and order the deserters back to the Qun? It sounds like the sort of thing he'd do: he didn't seem to mind ordering his men into sure-death situations.
Anyway, the apostate merchant was still there. Thomas sold him the contents of his junk-bag and a few bows he'd picked up that weren't quite as good as the one he was wielding. (That he'd picked up at the docks while killing the slavers.) Then he went back to Hightown, to drop off the Qunari blades with Taarbas...
... except that Thomas didn't arrive until after the sun had gone down, and Taarbas had gone back to wherever he was staying. Well, this meant Thomas could work on the gang he was pretty sure had moved in.
Under the heading of "darkly amusing irony," the Hightown nobles live in the only district of Kirkwall that isn't safe to take walks in at night.
Under the heading of "rather irritating irony," Thomas can safely walk through any neighborhood of Kirkwall at night except for the one he actually sleeps in.
Well, time to fix that. Thomas walked through the streets, and eventually came across...
... a blood mage and his army of thralls.
No, there's only one blood mage allowed in Hightown.
Time to do Meredith's job for her. Again.
Thomas pinned the mage to the ground with an arrow while Merrill and Aveline slaughtered the mooks and Anders just sat back throwing blasts of magic and supporting everyone else with his healing and buff auras.
The fight didn't last long, and soon it was time to look for another one.

I'm torn between irritation at how badly this guy sucks at his job, and worry that he'd have just been slaughtered if he'd tried to help.
He found the next fight outside the Viscount's Keep. Oh boy. A blood mage there might be bad news. Maybe not as bad as the demonically possessed book of evil magic inside the Keep had been. But... still bad.
This fight got a bit more complicated, since the thralls got a chance to surround the party and start swinging at Merrill, but she had enough hit points to be a competent blood mage, and Aveline ran back to her side once she realized what was happening. So it worked out.
On to the next one... which happened in the courtyard right under the Chantry.
Again, potentially bad, but not as bad as having a demonically possessed book of evil magic inside the Chantry. And anyway, Thomas made short work of them by the same strategy he usually uses with mages with small armies of minions.
The one noteworthy bit in this fight was when Anders screamed "I'll show you why mages are feared!" It's not noteworthy that he'd say such a thing: it doesn't help his case that mages should be free, and so Thomas-with-the-beloved-sister-in-the-Circle wishes he'd stop saying it... but he's been saying it in battle for years. Thomas is no longer surprised when he hears it. No, the surprise is that Anders thinks blood mage thralls need a demonstration of why mages are feared.

On the way to wherever the next fight was, they found a guard silently standing at attention. Within sight of the battle Hawke had just won I'm torn between irritation at how badly this guy sucks at his job, and worry that he'd have just been slaughtered if he'd tried to help. I wonder if that's the same guard that complained that "nothing exciting" ever happened on his watch, mere seconds after Hawke and company fought I think two fights back-to-back right in front of him.

With Aveline busy with some guard training, the Hawkes decided to bring Fenris and Varric to find their grandfather's will. Fenris should be happy to kill slavers, Varric would get some story out of it. Win-Win for everyone.
As expected the slavers were not too happy to have unannounced company, but they didn't put much of a fight. Their leaders was a mage too, so Tevinter slavers they were, but he probably was a lowly mage. He didn't even summon one spirit...or maybe he just died to fast to do so, Arys wasn't too sure there. There was a bunch of valuables in the cellar and the vault. Also, an old picture of their mom and the precious will. Once Arys put her hands on it, Bethany wanted to show it to their mother right away.
Turns out there grandfather left everything to their mom. That means Gamlen is a thief on top of being a liar. Arys wasn't too happy and demanded he repaid everything, but her mother was nicer and readier herself to "become someone" again in Kirkwall to get back the estate. The Hawkes were going to be noble again, Arys was going to make sure of it.
After that, Bethany threw Gamlen out of his house to have some quality sister time. Arys gave Bethany's their mother old painting and they talked of having found a new home.
That discussion reminded Arys that she still had an amulet given to her by a witch that was supposed to be given to some Dalish Elves around the city. The elves were hanging out near Sundermount which wasn't that far from Kirkwall. On their way, they were assaulted by a mercenary gang. These turned out to have a bounty on them from Sebastian Vael.
At the Dalish camp, Arys was expected to see the fabled hallas, but none were to be found. Strange. She had brought Aveline and Varric with her, and of course Bethany who followed her around everywhere. At the camp, after some tense discussion with the guard, Arys was allowed to talk to the Keeper and was asked to bring the amulet higher in the mountain. It had to be given the rite of the departed. Arys was a bit puzzled as to why an amulet should get a funeral but she didn't complain too vocally about it. The Keeper's First, Merrill, was to help with the rite and then they had to bring her back to Kirkwall as that was her wish. After meeting the First, Arys wasn't too sure if that was a good idea. She sounded very nervous and awkward, Arys wasn't sure if she would survive Kirkwall.
Climbing the mountains ended up being slightly complicated. Outside spiders ("why did it has to be spiders"), shadowy things and undeads, there was also magical barriers. Merrill ended up using blood magics to deal with one of them. Nobody in the party was happy about this, but nothing nefarious happened yet over it. Then once at the altar, the rite was executed and a witch appeared. Arys wasn't sure what to think, so she simply joked about all of it. "Flemeth" gave some cryptic warnings and flew away. It was now time to go back to Kirkwall with Merrill. She was overwhelmed by the Alienage and asked Arys to come visit. She needed a friend. Feeling somewhat responsible for her, the invitation was accepted. Arys was sure Varric would also help, he wasn't living that far away from there anyway.
While leaving Merrill to her new home, the group stumbled on an elven mother talking to a mage. Her apostate son ran away. Arys, urged by Bethany, accepted to go search for him. His mother gave two possible course of action and Arys decided to check after the father. He had sent the boy to an ex-templar that shouldn't be too hard to find at night.
While travelling town, Arys had also taken some mercenary work: - a merchant wants his mine investigated because none of his worker had showed up for work. He sounded like an ass or it might just be the Orlesian accent, but promised to pay properly. He also said the name of the mine wasn't his idea after Arys said that naming the place "The Bones pit" was a bad idea. - a city magistrate needed help to capture a fugitive who hide in an creature infested ruins. There was already guards on the case, but they complained about too many losses. Maybe Aveline should look into this really, Arys didn't mind helping if there was a pay at the end. She still needed those 50 sovereigns. - the son of the Viscount had been kidnapped or at least that is what the bounty said. Going by some of the mercenary talking to the senechal Bran about it, the kid was probably already dead, while Arys had the impression there was some lie under the bounty request. But having the Viscount in you good grace could do wonder to raise up. - some herbalist need regents, mostly form dead creatures. He promised free samples and a pay. ---- I was laughing during the conversation with Bran for the Viscount son bounty stuff, the two guards behind him were moving in synch.
Merrill is still the most adorable little sister blood mage ever.

Maybe? But if so, he was on slightly different behavior tonight: he didn't say anything. He just stood at attention and didn't even react when Hawke walked right up to him. Maybe because he didn't want to complain in front of Aveline? Or maybe he was supposed to watch something Jaquen H'ghar didn't want watched, and by the time Hawke and Company got there he'd been killed and nailed into place. ---- Anyway: Thomas Hawke went all over Hightown looking for more blood mages to kill, but didn't find a one. So he decided that since he was already in his own neighborhood, he might as well head home. When he got there, Merrill complained that the dog took up too much room in the bed, and sometimes stank. She asked that he be put in Sandal's bed from then on. Sandal and the dog were both on board with that. Thomas decided to head over and talk with Sandal, and Sandal's opening line was "the old lady is scary." Bodhan explained that Sandal sees an old lady who isn't there by his bed every so often. What the hell is up with Sandal? Anyway, Thomas looked over his writing desk. Ella was still an apostate. Good for her. Feynriel was doing okay. Good for him... although he did seem to confirm that Tevinter, for all that mages are free there, isn't exactly a place worth emulating in other respects. (Not that we didn't know that.) The dwarven Merchant's Guild wanted to help Thomas mortgage his estate. That one went right in the hearth. Knight-Commander Meredith wanted Thomas to come help her with something? Oh, wow, if she's asking for Thomas's help after their public argument then this is probably serious. So Thomas is going to do what he always does with serious issues: ignore it until he runs out of less important things to do. Ser Marlein Selbrech, the knight who's trying to build a coalition against Meredith, was holding a meeting in Lowtown that night. Thomas decided that it was worth attending... if he could get there before the sun came up. He grabbed Fenris, Anders, and Merrill, and started on the way to Lowtown. Or he tried to: there was a blood mage waiting right across the street from his front door with her thralls. Thomas slaughtered them, and it turned out she had a note saying where to find their hideout. Good information to have, but right now Thomas needed to get to that meeting. It turned out to have been held in the same square where Thomas had had to kill Meredith's death-squad a while ago. Ser Marlein started the meeting by saying that Meredith had overstepped her bounds. And a guy named Edgert the Hound responded that it was foolish to resist, because Meredith would kill them all if they did. His viewpoint didn't carry the day, so he revealed himself to be a templar plant and attacked. He was backed by a small army of templars, but they were more a bore than a threat. Ser Marlein thanked Thomas for his assistance and promised he'd have her assistance when the time came. Then she ordered the square evacuated before more templars could come. Thomas suddenly realized that this square (which he'd already realized was the same one he'd fought Mettin in) was the same one Gamlen lived in. So he popped in for a visit... and all Gamlen said was that he should have gotten a finder's fee from the Viscount for finding Thomas. Moving on... Thomas headed back to Hightown, and the sun was still down. A strangely long night, but whatever. Thomas wasn't sure he could get into the blood mage hideout he observed during the day. He took the party over to the Hightown mansion the blood mage leader was living in. He walked into the entrance hall, opened the door to the main hall... and then ordered the party to retreat off to the side. As he'd hoped, the poor thralls all came right to them. Her Majesty the Queen of Chokepoints Merrill hit them with Cone of Cold, and then hit one of them with Walking Bomb. The whole party focused fire on that one, and he exploded, killing the rest. It was about that time that the leader finally got through the door. Pinning Shot was still on cooldown, since Thomas had wasted it on a nobody earlier. Oh well. Thomas used Mark of Death, Merrill used Hex of Torment, and everyone immediately unloaded on him. A whole bunch of thralls immediately appeared out of thin air in the entrance hall. The party dispatched them, and then charged into the main hall to handle the very few remaining enemies. Thomas used Pinning Shot on a blood mage on the stairwell and finished her with a few more arrows, and nobody else was even worth noting. Thomas looted everything he could reach, of course, including the leader's corpse. It turned out to have a two-handed axe on it? Figure that one out: he was certainly using a staff to fight, and Thomas couldn't find that staff. Thomas considered giving the axe to Fenris, but Fenris's current axe was slightly better in most respects. The party left the mansion, which was now running red with mage blood, and headed to the Blooming Rose. Thomas was kind of wondering if Isabela was already there, and might be ready to take down Castillon. This is shaping up to be the longest night in Thomas's life, and I don't just mean that he's doing a lot. How is the sun still down?

Considering people in Kirkwall do nothing else but fight, drink and die (and occasionally go crazy), maybe he doesn't consider it exciting anymore? Maybe he needs something completely different, like polite conversation

Thomas Hawke walked into the Blooming Rose, and sure enough, Isabela was there waiting for him. Thomas paused to swap out her daggers for more Act-III-friendly ones before continuing. On the way up the stairs, she asked Merrill about their relationship, specifically asking if they get naked. Is this a freaking middle school? Merrill blushed and didn't answer. Is this a freaking middle school? (Also, I feel the need to repeat that Merrill walks around functionally naked in my version of the game anyway. All the stuff clothing is supposed to cover, hers doesn't. Merrill getting naked for Hawke isn't cause for embarrassment, it's a bare formality.) When they reached the top floor, Isabela said that in order for this to work, Thomas had to completely dedicate himself to the act: Castillon's number two was sharp enough that he'd see through Hawke's act if it was even a shade short of perfect. If he had to insult or even hit her for effect, he should do it. Thomas accused her of enjoying this a little too much, and Isabela giggled and agreed. They walked into the room (with Thomas breaking down the door for effect) and found Velasco (the second in command) intimidating the hell out of a naked elf. She fled when they distracted her, and Thomas informed Velasco that he'd found a much less skittish playmate for him. Isabela acted suitably appalled, and Thomas just asked if she remembered the time she'd run off with the Tome of Koslun, as if he hadn't given her permission to do it. Two armored men appeared out of thin air and dragged Isabela away, and she started dropping things behind her every time she thought she could get away with it. Thomas called Aveline with a conveniently placed companion-summoning horn and followed the trail out of Hightown, stopping in the market to wipe out a remnant of the gang of blood mages. From there the trail led through Lowtown and to the docks. I guess that shouldn't be a shock considering that Isabela's old boss would likely be a raider. The gang walked in, and Thomas got a chance to do some looting before he walked in on Velasco trying to extort favors from Isabela in exchange for putting a word in with Castillon. Well, Thedas will be better off without him. The ensuing fight was spiced up by the inclusion of a large flamethrower spewing fire, but that was easy enough to dodge, and nobody there posed any threat. The flamethrower shut off when the last mook died, and Isabela asked that they look around to see why Castillon had come back to Kirkwall. Aveline walked off, almost as though she could feel what Isabela was going to do next and didn't want to watch it. They searched around a bit, even finding a super-expensive herb tucked into a corner... and finally, they found Castillon's slaving manifest. Apparently he was in Kirkwall in order to expand his business in selling people. When they emerged from the side entrance they'd found the documents in, Castillon had arrived. He expressed little surprise to find that Isabela had managed to get the upper hand on Velasco, and no sorrow that Velasco was dead. Isabela held up the documents they retrieved... and offered him a deal? Isabela offered to give Castillon the documents they'd taken, in exchange for a ship and a promise to never bother her again. Thomas asked why she'd didn't just kill him and take the ship, and Isabela said that that's "just crude and amatureish." Thomas asked why she was trusting his word, and Isabela said "he's a businessman, and this is a business deal." Ignoring how unsatisfying Thomas found those answers, there was one other problem... Castillon is a slaver. He must therefore die. The gang handled business, and after that Isabela asked why Thomas had done that to her. A better question is, why did Isabela care that Castillon was dead? Thomas joked that it was payback for the time she ran off with the Tome of Koslun. Isabela said that she was probably never going to hear the end of that one. I dunno, how many times is Thomas going to need to bring that up? Thomas and Company walked out into the street and stopped in the Disused Passage to visit Bonny Lem. Thomas emptied out his junk-bag there, obviously... and he found a dagger that matched one of the ones he'd given Isabela, so he bought it and sold her current one. The group headed back to the Hanged Man, and Isabela bought Hawke a drink and thanked him for being the best friend she'd ever had. Aaaawwww. Thomas swapped her out for Fenris at the companion horn (friends or not, her fighting style really doesn't add much to the party when Thomas is in it) and they headed for Fenris's mansion. Once they were there, Fenris teleported into his sitting room and wound up in a conversation with Aveline. Aveline said that something he'd had her check up on was somehow exactly as he'd predicted it would be, which Fenris clearly had conflicting emotions about. Aveline let Thomas take over the conversation and then left. Fenris explained that he'd checked up on Hadriana's information from three years ago, and it turned out she was telling the truth. Fenris had a freedwoman sister, named Varania, and he'd managed to track her down. Fenris had arranged for his sister to get passage to Kirkwall so they could catch up... but he didn't trust it not to be a trap. Thomas agreed to head out to the Hanged Man. The sun was up by the time they left... which meant Thomas had been out all night. (He can just go into hibernation for several years when he's done his business this year, right?) His sister was there, and Fenris was able to recover some of his memories... including his birth name, Leto. And while they reminisced, the real fun started. An actual, honest-to-the-Maker Tevinter Magister strolled into the room, surrounded by guards. Not a minion mage who uses the word "magister" among southerners who don't know what the word means, and not a magister's apprentice who might one day inherit a seat at the big-kids table (or even have recently done so.) The real Maker-cursed deal strolled down those stairs to terrify the shit out of the party. Danarius introduced himself to Fenris's "new master," and reacted to Fenris's hatred of him by reminiscing on times when Fenris had been "so fond of me." Thomas could only hope that didn't mean what he'd thought it meant. Thomas suggested they could work out a deal where Danarius gives up on Fenris and the party doesn't have to go toe-to-toe with a mage whose ancestors were able to get entire armies to flee at the sight of them. But Fenris said that no, Danarius was going to die right there and then. Thomas suddenly realized that Isabela wasn't at her usual spot in the bar, and that Varric's room door was closed. This wasn't going to be pretty. Thomas and Company wiped the floor with Danarius's first three guards, and then went up the stairs to deal with the three that appeared there. (He ignored Danarius for no discernible reason. Danarius didn't have a barrier up.) A rage demon and a small army of shades appeared in the dining and drinking area, even though the party was in the upstairs. The party tried to head downstairs to meet them, but Fenris stood in the doorway blocking them and the demons wound up meeting the party on the stairs. When the shades and the rage demon died, a whole bunch of corpses appeared on the ground in the dining area and stood up to fight the party... and Danarius took out his staff. Since Fenris had been blocking the party into the upstairs, they were all right next to him when he started actively fighting. Or... when he tried to. Because Merrill was right next to him, she was able to get him with Cone of Cold before he could do anything. And from there the party all started wailing on Danarius... and he just stood there and took it. For way too long. He couldn't really fight back, because Thomas and Merrill knew what would happen if they allowed that... but it took at least a full minute for him to die. Danarius wasn't even wearing armor.So this is why people used to be so afraid of the magisters. This is why in ancient times, when a magister took the field, entire armies would take to their heels. It isn't just that they're terrifying mages, it's partially because their love of blood magic leads to them developing a level of pain and blood loss tolerance that wouldn't disgrace an Arishok. Well, he finally lost his footing under the unrelenting beating he was taking. (And thank the Maker.) And his summoned corpses all immediately fell over when he did. Fenris finally punched him through the heart and ended Danarius's pursuit of him. That just left Varania. Fenris rounded on her. Understandably so, too. Varania begged Thomas to stop him, also understandably considering what Fenris had to be planning after her betrayal. Thomas told Fenris to stop. Not because what he wanted to do wasn't completely understandable, but because she was still his sister. Somewhere in this conversation, Varania revealed what the price for this betrayal was supposed to be: Danarius was going to make her his apprentice. She even claimed she was going to become a magister one day. Anders crowed at the idea that Fenris's sister was a mage, and took it to mean that Fenris was just jealous of his sister's power. Anders accused Fenris, who has gone into detail about why he bears his misguided grudge against all mages, to the point where you can actually understand why he feels what he feels whether or not you agree... of jealousy. Anders. What. The FUCK. Is wrong with you? Fenris told his sister to leave. Thomas didn't object. How could he? As she left, she told Fenris that he'd freed Varania (and their mother) with the boon he'd been granted before he went under the knife (as it were) to get those markings. And Varania thinks he got the better part of the deal. Fenris didn't dignify that with a response. After she left, Fenris raged at how magic had corrupted everything, and how it had even destroyed his hope of reuniting with his family and regaining some of his past. Understandable or not, Thomas couldn't quite let that pass. He said that Fenris couldn't blame magic itself for his suffering. And Fenris, kind of reasonably, pointed out that everything about him was influenced by magic, and that it was rarely positive. In the end, Fenris just insisted on being out of there.

Considering people in Kirkwall do nothing else but fight, drink and die (and occasionally go crazy), maybe he doesn't consider it exciting anymore? Maybe he needs something completely different, like polite conversation Fair enough. Apparently not even the Chantry ladies are impressed anymore - had a random one walk right through the middle of a fight and her only comment was along the lines of "It's so nice to meet such pleasant people."

Thomas Hawke decided that since he was already in Lowtown, he might as well go visit the building Merrill was keeping the eluvian in. On the way in Merrill said she didn't quite understand what the big tree was for, but that she still liked it. One of the nearby city elves said that it was pretty much the only thing the city elves had to remind them that they were elves. Hawkward. Varric was already in Merrill's old shack to criticize Merrill for her obsession with the eluvian. He even asked if Thomas knew where she was, as though this trip hadn't been his idea. Merrill said that she was a grown adult, capable of making her own decisions without asking her boyfriend for permission to go where she pleases, and Varric decided to let Thomas take over the conversation. Merrill sat down with her boyfriend, and said that she'd thought she'd seen Tamlen in a market nearby, even though intellectually she knew he had to be long dead. She admitted she missed the clan, even Keeper Marethari, and was afraid that she sounded stupid. Thomas half-jokingly agreed that she had to have hit her head to miss Marethari. He hasn't exactly forgotten the way Marethari turned the clan against Merrill. The two headed over to Fenris's place, and Thomas sat down for a conversation with him too. He was bitter, and started taking it out on Thomas. Fenris had his freedom, and it tasted like ashes. Thomas joked that it tasted more like chicken to him, and Fenris said that all Thomas did was joke around... ... before he came to his senses and asked himself why the hell he was taking out his anger on Thomas, who'd only helped him despite their disagreements. Fenris decided to ask Thomas what he should do now... ... and Thomas refused to give Fenris a serious answer, because he was afraid that that would stop Fenris from making his own decision for once in his life. Fenris wound up revisiting his realization from after he'd killed Hadriana, that this hatred was a poison he kept willingly swallowing. Fenris started to look like he had some hope for his future, for the first time Thomas could remember. The group headed out of the mansion, and came across a nobleman outside the Blooming Rose. He introduced himself as an Antivan noble named Nuncio Caldera Lanos, and Hawke noted that he was impressed he could say that in one breath. Nuncio said it was to impress the ladies. (He didn't specify if he meant his name, or the fact that he was able to say it in one breath.) Nuncio told Thomas that he was hunting a dangerous murderer, who was hiding among the Dalish. But the Dalish weren't talking to Nuncio, so Nuncio asked if Thomas could join in. He told Thomas to look for a woman named Variel. Thomas headed to Sundermount to see the Dalish. But outside the camp, there were a few thugs and a few traps waiting to slow him down. Thomas disarmed the traps and helped dismember the thugs, and the group proceeded down the trail. Thomas came to another scroll that looked like the one from the Wounded Coast... to review, I mean the one he's afraid might have summoned an Arcane horror. He decided to leave this one for later, if he decides he needs some exercise. He came into the camp and quickly found this "Variel." He asked her how the clan was doing, and she revealed that they might be able to borrow some halla from another clan and finally leave Kirkwall. Good for them. Thomas asked her where the Antivan murderer he was looking for was, and Variel casually revealed that he was staying in the cave where Thomas had killed the varterall three years previously, because he figured staying with the Dalish would endanger them. She asked if that sounded like the "dangerous murderer" Thomas was expecting. No, it kind of didn't... Thomas headed past Variel, and stopped at Master Ilen's to sell some things and buy some healing potions. On the way over, he overheard Master Ilen tell his apprentice to pack his things, because they're leaving soon. Master Ilen then clarified that he wasn't sure the clan would leave, but that the two of them certainly would. Ominous. On the way out of the camp, the party ran into an ogre and two hurlock bolters. Oh boy. The party hadn't even gotten out of sight of the camp. Forget the halla, the Dalish should have fled no matter how they had to do it or what they had to leave. But Thomas and Company had no trouble with that fight, and were soon traveling on to the cave. They ran into a couple of poisonous spiders at the entrance. Also not really a challenge. They entered the cave, and Fenris asked why an assassin would advertise where he was. It wasn't actually a dumb question, even if you don't hold to the idea that there is no such thing. But the answer seemed clear enough: he didn't want anyone to be inspired to hunt the Dalish looking for him, and he figured the monsters between the camp and him would keep him safe enough. This interpretation only got more convincing when Thomas ran across some spider-made web traps and some spiders dropped from the ceiling while Thomas was trying to disarm them. At the end of the cave, Thomas re-encountered the varterral. He asked why the hell it wasn't dead, and Merrill said that it was bound there to protect something, and couldn't die until something related to its mission changed. The party killed it again, and the murderer they were hunting stepped out of the shadows. He introduced himself as Zevran Arainai, and Anders recognized him as someone who'd helped Jeeves Tabris end the Blight. Zevran said (in-between more pick-up lines than I bothered counting) that Nuncio had basically played Thomas: that he was a Crow sent to punish Zevran for quitting their guild... and for killing the last few dozen people who'd had the same job. And if Thomas brought Nuncio back to the Crows, they would kill him once they'd run out of use for him. That all said, Zevran said he wouldn't resist being taken back to the hunters: he said he'd rather take his chances resisting the Crows than resisting Thomas, and one assumes he figured Thomas would have to resist too. Well, Thomas found he believed everything Zevran was saying, but he figured he might as well take Zevran back to Nuncio anyway. It sounded like even if Zevran was right, it was going to come to a fight with the Crows, so no harm done whether or not Zevran's telling the truth. It turned out Zevran had been right, but that Thomas had been too: no harm was done... except to Nuncio and his men. Zevran paused to let Thomas loot the camp (it was almost like he'd done this before) and then thanked Thomas for his help with the Crows and left. With that handled, Thomas decided to head over to Darktown: Anders had said a few times that he'd wanted to talk privately in the clinic, and Thomas decided to see what was up with that. Anders said that he finally agreed that he should never have merged with Justice, and that he couldn't be a champion of mage freedom while he was such a perfect example of why the templars were afraid to grant it. And Thomas... kind of had to agree with him, given what he'd seen three years ago in the lyrium smuggler tunnels. Anders said that he'd been studying Tevinter magic (Fenris showed a complete lack of shock there) and that they were the only ones to study in detail how to remove a spirit from its host. (Thomas wouldn't logically know to ask about the Rivainis, I guess...) He said that he needed something called sela petrae, that was formed from the combination of urine and solid waste. Nobody in Kirkwall would know to sell it, because Anders would be the only one who wanted to buy it. So they had to go into the sewers to get it. Anders would also need something called drakestone, but that wouldn't be as nasty a chore. They'd just need to go back to the Bone Pit, which Thomas owned, so no problem there. Thomas asked if that was all he'd need, or if Anders would need the tongue of a virgin or something. Anders said no, that he understood Thomas's worry given how happily magisters sacrificed innocents, but that he'd just need those two ingredients, and boom! He and Justice would be free. Thomas agreed, and Anders was overjoyed. He'd said he'd known Thomas would help, even if... ... even after Thomas prompted him, he didn't finish the sentence. That's sketchy as hell... but it's not like he could be doing anything sketchy, right? If these ingredients did anything horrible, Fenris would know, right? So Thomas took the group to the entrance of the sewers, picking up a deathroot along the way.

Arys Hawke decided to do some night stroll at the docks. She found a group of raiders who partied too hard after a voyage and started to attacked anyone walking the docks. Except it appears outside of the Hawkes and Aveline that nobody stroll the docks at night. Not even the guards and Varric complained the entire time how the place was his most hated in town.
After dealing with a few of them, Arys thought they might be hidden in the sewer passages, but nope only thugs and thieves guilds member there. Also, a merchant quite glad to have his ass saved, not that he had to ask, the thugs started to attack everyone on sight. Out of the underground passage, Aryus stumble on a few more raiders until she found a note on where to find their "hideout". Hoping to find more free moonshine, the group made their way there and cleared house.
After that, Arys decided to find that Samsom guy who might know where the half-elf Feynriel went. The ex-templar is addicted to lyrium and has some suspicious friends, but once Arys said she was going to not kill him in return for information, he spilled everything. He was sending people to a raider who kidnapped them instead of giving them save passage away from templars. Turns out this other raider is friend with Tevinter slavers. They also stumbled on another poor mage who expect salvation but found slavery there. A mage who turned into an Abomination under stress. Arys should have brought Fenris, he is so eager to deal with slavers and demons. Once she had the coordinate of the other group of slaver, Arys moved to Darktown. This particular slaver wanted to take Arys and sell her, she told him she would made a terrible slave: she talks too much. Once dead, Arys found map to another hideout on the Wounded Coast. Who names coast like that?

Before going there thought, Arys decided to check on that Warden Varric talked about. His clinic was nearby. Of course, nothing is ever easy, he didn't want money for the map, he wanted a favor: help one of his mage friend escape the Templars. Arys was quite sympathetic to the idea and off they went to the Chantry at night.
Unfortunately, the mage had been made tranquil and this was a trap and the Warden, called Anders, went a bit crazy. After the battle and some talking, his friend requested to be killed which Anders did pushed by Arys who said her sister always called Tranquility as something worst then death. Back at the clinic, Arys demanded some explanation about the glowy bits and while Anders claimed he wasn't an abomination, Arys was sure he actually was. She left him in his clinic in friendly term, he might end up useful once they go in the Deep Road.
Arys being done for the night went to bed, she might check on Merrill tomorrow and do some outside of town activities. Hopeful the girl haven't been killed yet.

As Thomas Hawke approached the sewers, he suddenly got the inspiration to switch out Fenris for Aveline. He took it. As they were entering, Anders started a conversation with "I know it's not my place, but..." Nothing you say before the word "but" really counts. He asked Thomas if he was really sure about his relationship with Merrill. Thomas said he was. Anders said that Merrill would never choose Thomas over her demon. Merrill asked what the difference between her situation and Anders/Justice's was, and I wish Thomas had gotten the inspiration to say "yours hasn't actually possessed you." I just hope it's not significant that Merrill never actually said "yes I would." Immediately after the conversation ended, the party was attacked by lyrium smugglers. Thomas never even got the chance to remind them that he's a former smuggler, or to assure them he didn't give a fraction of a damn what they were up to in the sewers as long as they let him take care of his business there. They found a deposit of sela petrae there, and Anders said "ew, I don't want to touch that." Nobody does, but this was your idea. Get on it, buddy! The gang fought there way through a large organization of smugglers, including at least two mages. Well, none of them were any trouble: the mages didn't get a chance to cast, since Thomas immediately hit each one with Pinning Shot and finished them with a few more arrows. (If none were in evidence, he tossed that combo at a handy archer.) They eventually came to the Pit Boss... who wasn't much different than his goons apart from a longer health bar. The gang collected the sela petrae... and a note from the Band of Three. Been a while since we heard of them, huh? This note said that the magisters were deliberately thinning the Veil in Kirkwall... which explains a lot of things, and not just why the Veil is so thin. For example, the horrible stuff the Tevinters were doing with mass executions in the Bone Pit, and the thousands of slaves who vanished without a trace in Kirkwall, both make more sense in this context. They also said they'd figured out where the Veil was thinnest, and were going to investigate that spot. It made sense, since whatever they wanted to find would probably be there. On the other hand, it sounded really, really dangerous. Next stop, the Bone Pit. Anders said "we still need the drakestone from the Bone Pit" on the way in, as if that wasn't the only reason Thomas was here. On the way in, Thomas noted the wreckage was still burning. That's actually kind of impressive. Anders said that he hoped that no other dragons had realized the place was open for new residents. Thomas suddenly got the idea that he could switch out party members right there and then, but elected not to. The group walked in... Good news! No dragons. Bad news! Giant spiders. At least these were the manageable sized ones. Thomas broke the web mines the spiders had set up. (Maker knows how the spiders did that. But one thing's for sure: I don't want to.) The spiders dropped from the ceiling to tender their objections, and were promptly squished for their troubles. Thomas crawled the mines, picking up drakestone and putting down spiders. Eventually, he came to a freaking huge one. Oh, not this again. This spider was appreciably more powerful than the one that they'd faced in the Deep Roads: that one would have died pretty much instantly if this party at that level had immediately hit it with Mark of Death and Hex of Torment before going to town on it. This one managed to take that treatment. Thomas had to tell Aveline off for hitting the less serious spiders while the big one was still up. Twice. That was a little nerve-wracking. But it got handled, and the big spider died. Then the little ones died shortly afterwards, obviously. Thomas picked up the last drakestone deposit, and then Anders told Thomas that there was one other thing that needed to be done, and that they needed to discuss it in the clinic. On the way back through Darktown, Aveline asked why Merrill was still here, when Kirkwall's fights weren't her own. Merrill said that she loved Thomas, and that was the only reason she needed. Aaaawwww... (And now one more time for the abominations in the back! ) When they got there, Anders said that he needed Thomas to distract the Grand Cleric while Anders did something in the Cathedral. The hell does this have to do with making you not an abomination anymore? Anders told Thomas that he couldn't explain why this was needed, but that if Thomas really believed in mage freedom, he should do it. He also said that whatever happened as a result of this wasn't Thomas's fault. That's not ominous. Thomas asked what he should even say to distract the Grand Cleric, and Anders said that it didn't matter... then he reconsidered, and asked Thomas to give the Grand Cleric one more chance to take the side of mages. Thomas agreed to trust Anders, even though Anders was giving him every reason not to. Anders said that Thomas was a better friend than Anders deserved. That was the least reassuring "thank you" he'd ever received from anyone. Thomas could only hope Anders was wrong there. The group departed for Hightown, and Thomas checked the Chanter's Board to see if there was anything less skeevy he could be doing right now, apart from heading to the Gallows to handle Knight-Commander Meredith's request. There was not. They entered the Chantry, and Anders told Thomas to get started. On the way, Merrill asked Aveline if she would look after Thomas if anything happened. Aveline assured Merrill that she would. Merrill also asked if Aveline would look after Isabela, since she gets into trouble a lot. Aveline was understandably worried and asked what had brought this on. Merrill didn't exactly give a satisfying answer. Great. Now I need to worry about Her Majesty the Queen of Chokepoints doing something stupid. It's not like I was already worried enough about my healer, thanks. The group reached Grand Cleric Elthina, and Thomas asked what the Grand Cleric would do if, hypothetically, one group was oppressing another group. The Grand Cleric immediately knew this was no hypothetical. She knew that Thomas was talking about mages, she knew that he kept the company of apostates, and she knew that he'd done a lot to "fan the flames of rebellion in this city." Well, Thomas wouldn't need a rebellion if Meredith would just bow to the will of the nobles and put him in the big chair, would he? But he supposed that since the Chantry knew all of this, he should be grateful it hadn't done anything to stop him. She noted that both sides had some legitimate points, and that both were guilty of some horrible wrongs. That much was true, but for the Maker's sake, couldn't she at least rein in the templars a bit? Maybe setting the mages free the way Thomas is pressuring her to do isn't going to happen (Elthina probably can't do that, since she's answerable to a higher authority outside Kirkwall) but if nothing else she could at least come down on the templars who aren't even following Chantry law, and appoint a Knight-Commander who wouldn't also try to be the Viscountess. Elthina said that her main concern was preventing a war: no matter who wins, the people of Kirkwall lose. She said that the most important thing was to protect the people from that worst case scenario, and that in order to do that, she needed to find a balance between the mages' desire for freedom and the templars desire for control. Then why the hell is Meredith still the Knight-Commander? She's not looking for balance, for peace, for compromise. She's the single best suspect for starting the war Elthina rightly fears. Anders walked up and said that he'd been looking all over for Thomas. Elthina saw that he looked troubled, and said that she'd hoped he'd found a balm for his spirit there. It's weird how she pronounced it with a silent "L." The three headed back to Anders's clinic, but he got there before they did. When Thomas found him, he'd changed into an all-black version of his usual outfit and was trying to hand Varric the one thing the Circle had allowed him to keep to remind him of his mother: a pillow she'd hand-embroidered. Since the only culture in this setting who are likely to have competent therapists are the Qunari, it's no wonder Varric and Thomas didn't freak out about that as much as they should have. But Varric was weirded out anyway, and refused to keep it. Varric left, and Thomas walked in. Anders greeted him, and said that he just wanted Thomas to know how grateful he was for their friendship. Thomas not-really-joked that that's the sort of thing you say right before you stab someone in the back. Anders assured Thomas, yet again, that whatever Anders does later isn't Thomas's fault and that nobody will blame him for it. I'm reminded of what Anders said in Act II after the party's second-to-last confrontation with Petrice: "Sometimes, you just know trouble is coming."

So... Buckeldemon was kind enough to make my Warden her own custom crossbow guess who's going to replay the entire series starting with her canon Warden again? I mean...why start playing a character I know I won't finish when I have my lovely Tabris who's jumping to kill things again?

To Arys's surprise Merrill was still alive and lived in some not to awful hovel in the Alienage, but she had only rats as company. To her great dismay. Arys suggested she would soon become a very popular person in the Alienage, but Merrill hoped it wouldn't come to this. They parted on friendly terms, maybe Arys would take her out on some adventure one day. After that, Arys went to the Hangman to hang out with Aveline, Bethany and Varric. There they meet "Captain" Isabela. Well it's more that Arys decided to talk to her after she kicked the ass of 3 men who were harassing her. After some chit-chat, she asked for Arys's help. Yep another one, nobody in this city could deal with their own problems. Isabela wanted a "second" for a duel or something like that. Apparently, one of her acquaintance from Antiva was looking for her and she decided to go deal with him first. Arys accepted the proposal, it could at least be amusing. Then there was only a few hours left to the night to talk with Varric. Arys wanted to know a bit more about him and his brother Bartrand before going on this expedition. Going by Varric's description, Arys was now thinking that she should prepare for the eventuality that Bartrand would betray them. Varric also admitted he was bored and that was his main motivation for anything. Arys was glad to be fun enough to hang out with and go adventuring. The next morning, Arys took her sister, Aveline and Anders the Wardens to fetch some ironbark near a Darkspawn infested area for the herbalist. Anders was quite annoyed that his "there is no Darkspawns near Kirkwall" was wrong, but they were not too difficulty to deal with. ----- I was just reminded that Merrill has no healing tree. Why can't Bethany stick with me for all the Acts? Why do I have to use Anders? Also, Rogue + haste = deadly hilarity.

After a few days, Arys told herself that it was probably a good idea to go help those guards watching a ruin full of creatures harboring a criminal. She was hoping the criminal had be eaten by now. Once there, the guards mentioned something interesting. Apparently, the magistrate told them to not go into the ruin and Arys was back-up. Why did it sound like expendable? And she had the future Captain of the guard in tow. Aveline didn't even know about this. An elven merchant also showed up, he was complaining the criminal had taken his daughter. He was stealing elven children and killing them and the magistrate wasn't doing much to have him killed for his deeds. Arys promised the elve she would take care of it, more to make him shut-up than because she really sympathized with him. The ruin was mostly infested by spiders. Why did it had to be spiders? Also a few undeads and other horrors. Hawke was expecting elven ruins, but it turns out it was dwarven ruins. She had brought Merrill along, but maybe Varric would have been better maybe. No that it mattered. They finally found Lia, the elven kidnapped girl. She had escaped or so thought Arys, but it was more that Kelder, the criminal, had let her run way. He was crying and saying he didn't want to hurt her and that the demons made him do it. Arys really thought she had to use that line next time accuse her of something "A demon made me do it!". Letting Lia run back to her father, the party advanced forward in the corridors until they made it to Kelder. The man explained the magistrate, his father, was hiding his action to save his job. Charming. The guy was some sick bastard and he was asking to be killed. Arys had no issues with it. The magistrate wasn't as cool with the idea once he got the news thought. Even threatened Hawke to leave town. Back in High town, Arys picked a few more jobs. A certain Ghislain, awful man, was complaining his wife, Ninette, was missing. He was very offensive and Arys was pretty sure the entire party (Bethany, Merrill and Aveline) wanted to punch him in the face right there...but Arys accepted his job. Maybe Ninette would then pay Arus to get ride of Ghislain, who knows. She also stumbled on a young girl asking for help to find her missing Templar brother. Arys wasn't a fan of tangling with Templars, but the girl sounded way to sad so she accepted to make enquiries. There was also some disturbing rumors about Templars and Arys wanted to investigate, just to be sure Bethany would be safe. Also, what happens when four girls go to the Blooming Rose? It result in Merrill making not too subtle comment about being fond of Arys. There was also this fellow Jethann who might know where Ninette went, he seemed positive she had finally left her husband and he gave the name of a Templar who was also looking for her. That night, Arys went to Isabela's duel meeting, which turned into an ambush and somehow to a murder spree at the Chantry. Arys really wondering what the Sisters and Mother thought in the morning with all the corpses on the floor. It's not like she was paying anyone to clean the streets and the Chantry. Once this was dealt with, Isabela offered her services to Arys...and probably more than that, but she looked like used goods so Arys skipped on that part. She also offered another job to Arys from an old friend of hers: find some cargo stolen by raiders. Then Hawke went to clear the Bone Pit. Arys would have never guessed what was attacking the miners there and she still doesn't know how one survived for days there. Dragons aren't known to leave meat around. Yes, it was dragons, the owner didn't believe it either. Merrill really wanted to meet the big one thought. Hubert then proposed to pay Arys so she could own half the mine. You read that correctly. She just had to get the workers back to the mine, which was easy to do really. ---- Merrill has a crush on Hawke even when not using the heart icons...the little elven sister got creepy, maybe I should romance her just to make this thing even creepier.
