Spent yesterday finding shards and closing rifts in the Forbidden Oasis, then completed In Your Heart Shall Burn. I found the Oasis frustrating the first time I did it and have avoided shard hunting in most of my playthroughs, but since this is going to be my last Inquisition run for a while I decided to be semi-competitionist this time around. (I'm doing all the side quests, solving all the Astariums and collecting all the shards but not intending to go out of my way to get mosaic pieces or bottles.) The Oasis was actually quite soothing this time; I guess I have a better grasp on how the designers like to place shards than I did the first time I collected them all.
I find the Oasis a very nice place to go before recruiting either mages or templars. The only enemies are the rifts and a few hyenas (and spiders if you go into the tunnels). I also like that when you go back later on and the Venatori are there, companions will comment on the change. Blackwall, for example, will say he liked the place better without the company.

Not having gone there much, I heard a lot of location-based dialogue I hadn't heard before on my trip, like Bull's remarks about how the Qunari clean up after themselves when they finish a mining operation. (Which had me thinking 'you mean unless someone comes along to blow it up and flood the place, like Lavellan is going to do in another seventy hours of gameplay or so.') Cassandra has some nice comments, too. The spiders were a nasty surprise since I was only on level nine when I went into that cave to get the ring, but fortunately my rogue was able to stealth in and grab the loot while everyone else distracted them.

Yes, that does bother me about DAI armors. Cole and Sera in snowboarding outfits. Varric dressed like a pirate. I hate the leisure suits they put PC warriors in. I miss the old school mage robes. It makes me miss the armor of DAO! I like the default mage robes for DAO and DAI. Of DAO armor, my favs is the medium dragon armor and the warden cmdr armor though I find the latter over bulky. Depending on the climate and environment, a warrior wearing that will have a mini waterfall under the helm and likely lasts an hour in a fierce fight. They improved the warden armor in DAI which is great though I don't see the need for rooster tails at the butt. The best warrior armor, imo, is the battlemaster. More cover is needed on the upper arms but not too heavy. On rogue armor, it's still the battlemaster. To avoid the whooshing sounds of influence gained but not recognized, another mod to the rescue! www.nexusmods.com/dragonageinquisition/mods/414/This raises the cap to 30 and will allow you to get all of the perks if you want them. You still have to gain influence the old-fashioned way (buy it! ). Even if you don't use them, at least the weirdo sounds will go away and you will actually gain the influence you earned. I finished at Inq. lvl 23 with Bruenor, but I only buy the 2d and 4th tier influence. The other ones aren't as good a deal. melbella comes swooping in! You're a treasure.

You know what I did? I went to Nexus and looked through every single DAI mod listed to find stuff that would negate all the game's annoyances. And, for the most part, it's there. Now I have a list I use for every game. About the only thing I change is the Inky icon and PJs. PJs aren't as important now with the wardrobe added, but having a not beige outfit for the first cutscene at Skyhold is nice.

One has to appreciate the fact that DAO tried to account for fatigue so that heavier wasn't always better. I did like the Warden Commander armor the best aesthetically followed by Wade's armors. In DAI, battlemaster looks good on Blackwall and Cass. On Inky, it looks to be all leather except for a small chest plate. The dragon armor that becomes available after JOH is great, but it comes likely after you've killed most of the dragons! (Golden Nug to the rescue!) Grey Warden armor is great, but Inquisitor and companions aren't Wardens! (Well, Blackwall, I guess is a near miss...) On the warrior, it looks like metal sheets with the exception of the heavier plate covering the chest. On the rogue, same. I'd like to think of it as akin to chainmail. Full plate is murder unless you're planning to fight on a horse and even then, unseated, you're dead meat on the ground. Agree. Nobody except BW is a "warden" so it's rather odd to have anyone except him wearing warden armor. O.T. I would so love to have the warrior wielding either a longsword or greatsword making those kind of moves. The female warrior was holding her own until she got one in the middle, ugh. Her armor looked like leather though. Interesting three braids at the back btw. Someone could tug her down easily from behind. Female knight with longsword. Woot! ... but she has a blond braid hanging down her back. I'll take it as a game "mechanic" to show it's not a guy facing off the other two at the end. She's not alone though, the Viking has a braid too but he's definitely a guy.
* DD During the meal, no one looked at the lift though it loomed like a hammer about to fall at the back of their minds. There was not much conversation, everyone was too tired after that last wrangle with the High Emissary. Elvene knew she wouldn't be able to sleep so she fletched more arrows. Solas was off by himself, as usual. Dorian fussed with pebbles that had somehow managed to creep into his boots before settling himself down at his bedroll. Cass sat on her bedroll with her eyes closed and seemed to be meditating. Ren seemed bent on sharpening his axe to curve even the tiniest hair while Valta pored over the book she found. Around the camp, Inquisition scouts and Legion dwarves quietly cleared away the remnants of dinner. Some went off to relieve the sentries while the rest sat at their bedrolls, murmuring softly among themselves so as not to disturb the party that would be descending to the lower depths. Weird, I hadn't known that. But you can tint the drops, I did on my cowl. I guess I'm just not that worried about slightly less defense, I like it's magic boosts anyhow. As it is, my Inky and team are already overpowered! I shouldn't fret about hanging on to an underpowered helm when my PC has a monster stave and Tier 3 armor made from Tier 3 materials! (Perhaps I should give up shard hunting? How about requisitions? Does filling requisitions contribute to over-leveling?) Even ground and taking it slow should take care of all overleveling problems. I'm only running with even ground right now and I don't really feel OP. I don't nug however. When I did that I soon ran into problems. The game is generally better at knowing when to give the next equipment level. Do you friendly fire? Oh yes! DAO mage robes are an ABOMINATION I tell you! AN ABOMINATION! But is nice to dress up Morrigan like a chantry sister.

I loaded up a save from before Doom Upon All the World since I finally got the DLC campaigns and I got to meet Inquisitor Ameridan. My quizzy is a Dalish rogue and romanced Solas. She found it rather interesting how Ameridan was also a Dalish Inquisitor who was in a relationship with an elven Dreamer mage. (On a meta level, I did too, since I started this playthrough way before JoH was ever announced.) She made sure to bring Solas along on that mission. I headcanon'ed her giving him a ton of meaningful looks after speaking with Ameridan (since this was after he broke up with her) .

I've played through the Dalish elf background. It was surprisingly lacklustre, though explained all the necessary lore points. But it had boring characters, very small and unimpressive areas, and barely any subplot. That evil mirror was about as interesting as any other tree in the woods....
I did like having a capable rogue to start with, but I think I prefer a melee version in order to scout things out, then backstab, because of how unbelievably good the stealth is.
Do warriors make good archers, or is there a way to build a versatile rogue that can do both range control and can kill a spell Caster? Or which type of a rogue can bring down spell casters faster/better?

I did like having a capable rogue to start with, but I think I prefer a melee version in order to scout things out, then backstab. Do warriors make good archers, or is there a way to build a versatile rogue that can do both range control and can kill a spell Caster? Or which type of a rogue can bring down spell casters faster/better? Unlike the subsequent games, you can arm your warrior with a bow or crossbow. You can carry two sets of weapons which you can switch at any time, so I always had my warriors carry crossbows in addition to the sword and shield set or great sword. This for situations where you want to hit enemies with ranged weapons from a distance rather than have your warrior move in close in an unfavorable situation. The thing to remember are the attributes important to your PC and his/her companions as you level up. For warriors, strength is the most important attribute to be able to wield the best swords, shields, axes, etc. For a mage, upping the magic is crucial. And for rogues, you want to increase dexterity to be able to use the better bows and daggers. The rogue will also want cunning to support picking locks and strength has to be gradually built up as well to be able to use the higher level rogue armors later in the game, but dexterity and cunning come first. So, trying to address your questions, crossbows generally require more strength while bows require more dexterity. That's why I use crossbows as the secondary armament for warriors rather than bows. Warriors do have access to archery skill trees and I'll typically give my warriors some of the entry level skills so they can at least shoot with reasonable accuracy. In the end, it's all a matter of how you want to prioritize. For rogues, I always give them both dual wield and archery capabilities and they would all carry one bow and one set of dual wield weapons (two daggers or a dagger and a sword). All rogues will have access to both the archery and dual wield trees. You, of course, make them specialize one way or the other. Leliana, more archery while Zev more dual wield. Also, remember for rogues, they have the poison skill to make grenades and poisons. Once you get to the second level, you can make grenades. (Note, the first level of poison will allow a character to use a grenade that's already been made. I frequently give my warriors and mages the entry level poison skill so they can use grenades.) Rogues have nothing like Templar skills for taking out mages, but grenades can hurt mages enough so they can be taken down quickly. Regarding the Dalish elf origin, Merrill, the young mage, will be a companion in DA2 and there will be some further dealings with this particular Dalish clan in DA2. (Merrill will obviously be fleshed out much more than she is in the origin story.) Also, the mirror is an eluvian, an ancient elven artifact that will be much more important in DA2 and Inquisition. (Think of the way the importance of Bilbo Baggins' ring changes from the Hobbit to what it becomes in the Lord of the Rings.) Duncan destroys this eluvian because it has been tainted. In DA2, Merrill will obsess over repairing it. I hope that answers your questions. You can only do so much with each of the origin stories before they have to converge into the main plot.

My OCD regarding completing everything on a map is what has me at Level 19 despite all these trials. I've just started both Descent and Emprise de Leon. I've completed Hinterlands, Storm Coast, Fallow Mire, Emerald Graves, Exalted Plains, Crestwood, and the Western Approach. I've tried Friendly Fire, but companion AI is so bad, your PC and the companions end up killing each other and you're forced to do everything in the tactical screen rather than in real time. The worst of the mage robes has to be the Battlemage mail on the PC! If a kid wore that outfit for Halloween, someone would give them a wedgie!

Thanks for the tips on the crossbow, I really saw no point of it because there was not a single magic one I saw throughout the game. But Xbow for warriors makes sense.
Yep, I tried to add some archery to Zev, and some DW to Leliana, but I found that rogues did not have enough points to develop a good second line. I figured it would be easier with a custom character, that you build from scratch. I guess, I'd sacrifice the advanced class points in favor of the ranged specialization.

The City Elf Origin is a better one for illustrating anti-elf prejudice among some humans. And then, of course, the connection of a City Elf PC to the alienage is reinforced because you revisit the alienage at least twice later in the story.

I enjoyed the City Elf origin, even though I felt that it was contrived. Duncan is there, plus you're having your wedding, plus Vaughan just decides to drop by, all at the same time? It was a little odd for me (and the rape elements disturbed me, but that's expected). In terms of the writing, though, it broke the suspension of disbelief for me.

So I was expecting a cool character, something that attracted players' and dev's attention and made them pick her for further development. Like you know, all those threads about: what npc you'd wanted as a companion? They usually pick on really outstanding (in some way) characters. But Merrill was bland. okay, I am going to sneak out till I have the chance to play the next background. Edit: oh, I just saved myself $40, I suppose, as I saw in an unrelated thread that DA:I has no healing spec for mages in addition to being 150 hours long or some such scary stuff.

I always found the Dalish Elf origin to be the weakest one, partly because of the repetitive reuse of the ruins and partly because it has less connection to the rest of the game than any of the others. Ironically, it's turned out to be the one with the most long term impact, between Merrill and the rest of the Sabrae clan appearing in DA2 and all the elfy stuff in Inquisition. I enjoy the story of my Dalish elf Warden far more in hindsight than I ever did while I was actually playing it. The thing was I did not know Merrill was in that background story, but I knew that she was a companion in da2. So I was expecting a cool character, something that attracted players' and dev's attention and made them pick her for further development. Like you know, all those threads about: what npc you'd wanted as a companion? They usually pick on really outstanding (in some way) characters. But Merrill was bland. okay, I am going to sneak out till I have the chance to play the next background. Edit: oh, I just saved myself $40, I suppose, as I saw in an unrelated thread that DA:I has no healing spec for mages in addition to being 150 hours long or some such scary stuff. You don't need a healer, replaced with Barriers and guard for everyone, also anyone can shake someone awakefrom their death/unconscious ness.... but they also have Knight Enchanter which is healer ish. Also, I beat my first DAI in 65 hours. another 20 for Trespasser. 150 is if you do nearly everything. Edit add: there is a lot of side content that is wholly unnecessary. It's for people who want to try something new their second third fourth play throughs

In DA2 Merrill better than in DA:O. Yes, the DA:I is scary in this viewpoint. But you can avoid most of the filler quests.

So far DA's series main attraction was that it was much like Baldur's Gate for me, and losing healing is not my thing. Well, I will see how it goes, but chances are I have no time for it for a while anyway. Maybe it will become cheaper to buy in a year or so, after ME :A. I have a feeling it is not going to be my cup of tea.

I enjoyed the City Elf origin, even though I felt that it was contrived. Duncan is there, plus you're having your wedding, plus Vaughan just decides to drop by, all at the same time? It was a little odd for me (and the rape elements disturbed me, but that's expected). In terms of the writing, though, it broke the suspension of disbelief for me. Well the wedding happens that day because Duncan is there. If you talk to the elder as a male elf, I think he confesses about pushing the wedding forward when he heard Duncan was in town and admits having done that before when the players mother was getting married as well. Otherwise I'd suspect he'd let the new elves settle in a little before the ceremony. I also suspect the wedding was what drew Vaughan in that day. There is obviously some merriment going on in the alienage, they are drinking, dancing and gathering in groups to talk. He might have decided to check what was going on and how to ruin it, since his dad is out of town and it could satisfy his sadistic urges with minimal repercussions. Then there is also the question of how far it would have gone if Shianni hadn't bottled him. It would still have been bad and Vaughan still would be terrible, but I suspect that blow to his pride did make him more eager to make mayhem. So for me at least it feels like one event happened that started another series of events. -- As for what I did today, nothing in game, but I did think up a few little fictions about that elf face I ended up creating and cursed my lack of interest in text-messaging on the go as a child, since I had no way of jotting down those little fictions. But it was probably for the best, since those were silly fictions. Might also have ended up loading up the game, created a new face and played through the prologue...

The party consists of 3 characters, and MET is neither a trinity game based around the TDH, nor it is a classic tank, rogue, Mage, priest set up. So, I always play MET as a dps game. My understanding is that you do not regen in combat in DA:I, and you can only barrier another character or shield yourself with a guard to absorb a bit of damage. I dunno, I have a feeling that DA:I was bio's take on sandbox games, and I have never played one, so I am really not sure what to expect.

I have never understood this tank, damage dealer, healer thing. I guess it's because we dumped D&D early on and went with skill based instead av class based rules. As for healing in DAI you have regen potions, heal on kill, lifeward, resuscitation, proximity healing etc. There is an abundance of healing in DAI. So if you want to play a spirit healer you can, by slightly other means.
