I finally completed the Mass Effect challenge, (reward is the "Best of the Best" banner) a couple of days ago. Took me several years (!) of on and off play, though there was more focus the past few months to use weapons/kits I previously neglected. I never thought I'd actually get it, otherwise the effort/grind would have seemed so daunting from the onset it would have put me off from playing altogether.
Anyone else want to share their thoughts or experiences obtaining their BotB banner?
-- Edit 18 Jan 2016 -- Got my banner at around 500 hour mark. Last 100 hours or so were focused on finishing up partially complete challenges. You won't get BotB banner by simply playing as you please. A few people indicated it takes 2-300 hours to get it if you're reasonably focused, but that turns the game into a grind that you may or may not be able to tolerate.
While this BotB advice really comes too late for for ME3, perhaps some of it may be applicable to ME:A. Skim through all alien and weapon masteries - pick out weapons, powers and kits for 10 extraction challenges that seem interesting to try out. In other words, pick out challenges that seem fun/manageable first. Leave out the 200 wave challenges till the end, and by then many will be partially complete. Leave combat mastery over cover grab challenge till end - I repeated bronze waves 1-2/Cerberus/Vancouver for about half hour to get 100 or so remaining grabs. Solo mastery - bronze and silver can be done with pretty much any kit you like. Unless you like solo play, I don't suggest doing more than 1-2 attempts at a time. By the time you're ready for solo gold you'd know what kits work for you. For the 200 wave challenges don't force yourself to play with classes you dislike, even if it means trying and starting afresh with a different one, and not play on bronze simply to get it over with. Don't look at getting BotB as a race, because it's a fucking marathon that will eat you up and spit you out... I felt it was easier for me not to get hung up on the the really grindy (i.e. 200 wave) challenges even if it takes hundreds more hours.

Congrats. Completing all the challenges is quite the grind, and you should be proud of it.
Now get in my backpack like the rest of the people who use BotB.

Doesn't take too long to get it, maybe 200-300 hours. I have it on two platforms.
I actually don't like the banner either, but whatcha goin' do?
Now go max your manifest. That's a grind.

Congrats on getting the BOTB challenge in. Mine was a little bit of a grind but not too bad I guess.
Maxing your manifest will be a slog no doubt. I still haven't gotten mine done yet. Probably won't either but that's ok.

nice you have now earned the ugliest banner in MP. use the Spectre or the N7 ones, they're the classics. and now prepare for the BotB_A . soon on a monitor near you.

Good. That also means you have unlocked the two best looking banners in the game: Dog of War (Grunt) and Operator.

Congratz! There was nothing I despised more than that awful N7 Mastery - grinding levels and recruit packs was a chore I don't want to go through ever again (though I'm betting ME:A will probably have something similar, too). The Banners are awful indeed, never put them on myself. I prefer Operator, Earth (Shadow) and at the moment Mathemagician (golden chemical elements)

Congrats.
Now push yourself and do some Themed Challenges. Then you'll realize that banner is nothing more than a participation trophy.

I was pleased to get the BotB, which mostly rewards playing a lot rather than playing well (except the solo mastery does take some effort). But once I had it I rarely use it because it adds insult to injury if I suck in a mission. I prefer the Nomad banner because that shows you've 'been around'

I enjoyed getting the Lone Wolf banner the most, everything else after that were just a long grind to get all of the challenges done (N7 were the most tedious).
Best of the Best only means that you have put the time in to grind all of the different challenges, the only one that requires a bit of experience and knowledge to do is the solo mastery.

That means you may have been early enough into MP for this Use it instead BOTB! That's the one I use. Most awesome banner available. I haven't done a lot of the challenges for other banners... I have no interest in playing kits I don't like or use weapons that just totally suck just to get some challenge points (and banners I won't use).

No, they just take time to get, all of them except Lone Wolf are just grind challanges, do 140K dmg with gun X, complete 10 extractions with kit X, do 200 Waves with kit X, do 50k damage with Power X etc.
Nothing hard, just a grind that you will complete if you play long enough.

I am just comparing to the titles you get in the two (I know, impressive!) MMOs I played. It gave pretty cool titles for doing rather easy stuff & very fast. Obviously, they also had more coveted rewards for the really cool guys, but even a pedestrian like me sported a selection of titles after just a couple of weeks of playing. With ME3MP, particularly once they discontinued those Weekend and special challenges, it does take quite some hours and focused efforts to earn. They certainly do not come naturally by just playing whatever you want. I am sort of hoping that they do weekend challenges with special titles or some entry-level ones for less impressive accomplishments. Would be cute if there were more variety. Well, unless it is a huge drain on resources.
