I thought Shiani was TW1 LI and a tW3 DLC sex partner. But not a TW3 LI? That's correct. BUT the way I played out TW1 Geralt's feelings for Shani is still there. He breaks off because he can't give her what she want's. - It was not for you Geralt, hearth and home. - To kill and be "king" (i.e. famous) is that all? - Perhaps not even that. So he dallies with sorceressess but it's not love. Uh, have you intentionally taken these three statements from John Boorman's "Excalibur", or was that a coincidence?

I recall her from my watching of YouTube to be a character that really did want him to settle down and always thought she was being pretty unrealistic. But at least she didn't abuse Alvin (as much good as it did apparently.) Her voice actor could get pretty shrill. But your head canon is interesting. She's in the hearth and home DLC right? When would you time that DLC ? Heart of Stone, actually. Recommended level is 32 and up, and I wouldn't do it any earlier since it's rather difficult. I played Geralt as tending towards the exotic and nontraditional (he really has a thing for sorceresses) so Shani was never an option in TW1, but she's pretty nice in HoS. I'm not sure if her scenes are open to the interpretation of a continued romance headcanon since I never attempted it, but they may be. Level 32 sounds really high. It seems like I'm just barely to level 4 and it wasn't easy getting there even with all my investigation of the question marks. @_@ If there is only sex to be had with her, obviously I'd have to do it before a confirmed relationship with the other two. Unless it doesn't count as cheating? Wait, I think I'm assuming there is a post game. Like how you could keep playing after the Inquisitor defeats Cory. But this assumption has no support lol

There is a post game, and there is a post-final-DLC-ending-game too. You can keep roaming the countryside and do side quests after the credits roll for the final time.
And no, it doesn't count as cheating.
EDIT: I was level 52 at the end of everything. It's a huge game.

So, Heart of Stone is side content you do around level 32 and then Blood and Wine? Is the post base game DLC? Well, I bought everything at release, so I pretty much played the main story to the end first, then Hearts of Stone, and finally Blood and Wine. Blood and Wine is definitely meant to be played last - it's Geralt's last adventure, and a new region is added for it. It still has a post game mode, since it's likely you walked past a side quest here or there and you can always finish them up afterwards.

Is the post base game DLC? You can technically do them whenever you want. The game will give you recommended levels for them, though, and you aren't likely to reach those levels until you are finished (or nearly finished) with the main game. And as stated by others, Blood and Wine makes more story sense to do last. I was also in the low 50's, I think, by the time I finished everything.

dragontartareBut I may decide to do romantic content with Shiani and I don't want to do it after I've supposedly pledged my undying love to a sorceress Then start Heart of Stone as soon as you have leveled enough to not die every five minutes, and just go far enough to get the Shani content finished. From that point, you can decide whether to continue the DLC quest or go back to the main quest and finish the DLC later.

But I may decide to do romantic content with Shiani and I don't want to do it after I've supposedly pledged my undying love to a sorceress You can do both expansions whenever you want, as long as you can deal with the enemies. The ending of B&W is not "more final" than the ending of the main game, nor is there any indication that it's intended to be seen as Geralt's last adventure. It's the other way round, actually. Geralt's personal epilogue, such as it is, has more to do with the main game. I've played both expansions before I finished the main plot, and all you have to contend with is odd story pacing. As for the levels, I was significantly overleveled for most of the game. You'll reach level 32 well before the end of the main plot if you do all the sidequests and explore a lot, though admittedly it doesn't look like you will for a long time.

Casual flings with Shani,Keira, etc have no impact on the Triss/Yen romances. Geralt messing around on Yen is actually in-character in the novels(as is Yen messing around on him).

Yenn seems used to Geralt. Triss I don't know. oh, so they have a physically open relationship, but not a emotionally open to other partners relationship? is there any recognition of a relationship with Shani in The Witcher 2? Or do they just ignore it?

(Not that I particularly hate Triss or anything, just like Shani better and since they did have a save import, it was a missed opportunity to just ignore that whole decision.)

Consolidated Impression So Far with comparisons to Dragon Age
Various Things I like:
Voiced Over Introduction was intriguing. Better than DAI.
Tutorial was good because it incorporated story elements and you couldn't actually die during it. That's better than Origins and DAI.
One can light fire for light sources without having to be a mage.
Wind, clouds, stars, shooting stars, weather, night/day cycle = beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Very colorful in general.
Peasants and Guards recognize when your weapon is out and react. You can bump into people and they go "oof!' instead of the People WALLS of DA.
Mount!: The horse actually makes you go faster as compared to no increased speed mounts of DAI. I mean, it always seemed my Quiz could go just as fast walking. On top of that! it is a self pathing horse, so you just press X and enjoy the scenery with an occasional course adjustment. Or you can take total control. Also, does not disentegrate into black dust when you walk away. Helps immersion and as a devotee of Fast Travel in DAI, I have no urge to use it now. Horse refuses to go over cliffs or giant gaps in a bridge. like a normal horse would. haha
I like that they put the suggested path dots on the mini map and the exclamation points are more subtle.
I can swim! and jump in a realistic way, and climb rocks!
And there are kids all round who speak (if repetitively). And farm animals in town as well as wild animals out of town. And adults are gossiping and looking like they're working on daily tasks and not just standing there. Although, we did see soldiers practicing in Haven or at Skyhold with the Soldiers Ring upgrade.
I like that when Geralt takes a trophy, I see a little cinematic where he pulls out a dagger to cut off the head.
Random Side Quests are NOT fetch quests and you get the little nod of self worth when you clear an abandoned village of it's troubles.
Meditation for healing is cooler than sleeping in a tent (or pretending that you did, as you never actually see yourself entering)
I get to kneel on the ground! I think there should be more sitting on objects in these games.
I hope they keep having this merchant following me around. He's kinda ugly and has limited personality, but I like the Bodahn-like connection.
Your actions have consequences. I've already accidentally not thought through a handful of "choices" that resulted in bad things. This is good! even if I did feel like a shit. It's interesting, because even when you think you're making the "good" choice, it turns out not entirely to be right.
Interacting with your ward/kid in the dream sequence is neat. the only comparison I have for it is Clementine in TWD. I wish there had been more.
Things I didn't like:
As a new player, who did watch the first game and part of the second game on youtube...and still not knowing what's going on until you talk to people you don't get access to for the first 4+ hours of the game... I had to look up stuff online to figure out how I would handle a few choices. They also didn't reintroduce Witcher Neutrality very strongly. It was passing banter with the mentor. Game Import/Simulation of Choices never give you a frame of reference. I had to look outside the game for it. Prefer the DA style where it gives you a summary of the world state. I also wish they explained money a bit better? how can I haggle if I have no idea of the prices of things? Need a frame of reference.
Limited Flavor Text. It seems to be more about choosing to do or not do an action rather than expressing a personality through dialogue.
As of right now, I don't like either of the only two romance options I have. A red headed manipulative liar who took advantage of my memory loss and a raven haired Miss Mysterious who thinks I'm faking my memory loss but never tried to find me.
Dying from falling. Realism that just annoys me. Reduce my life to 1, but don't punish me for trying to control my video game character and not quite getting it right.
Horse Battle is a fail. I also don't get the horse fear thing. Geralt's horse should be made of sterner stuff.
Quests unlock access to people who can craft/repair stuff, so I'm having to fast travel back to the Starter Town to get it done right now until I advance. Also, Repairing? More realism I don't need.
Another realism I don't need is merchants with limited gold to sell to.
They do a lot right with the sky and weather, but their lightning looks pretty much like a white line drawn onto the sky. DAI has good lightning in Crest Wood.
On the Fence About: At first, I really liked the Witcher Senses zoom and highlight better than the golden ring of Hot Cold game that is finding things in Inquisition. Makes me feel like a person is looking instead of... Weird game mechanic. But the highlighted zones you are supposed to search with this are too large. There are two points where I just stopped using the senses and just wandered around looking with my eyes. It still took a long time. However, this mechanic allows "listening" and "smelling" which are unique and fun for this whole video game experience of tracking your prey/mission. So, I'd say tweak it way before getting rid of it.
Card games inside games. So long as they are optional...
The haggling is inconsistent? Sometimes I get to haggle, sometimes I don't.
I remember someone liking the Glory Kills of TW3. I find them kind of meh. The glory kills of origins I liked was climbing the Ogre and sinking a sword in it's head. This slow down thingie where I just put my sword through a mans' chest standing on the ground (if I manage to see it through the foliage) is a bit underwhelming.
The above was my impressions when I left last Thursday. I'm getting into the spirit things. BSN ate my awesome writing. I'm going to try again. Last time, on the Witcher 3It was just a small contract that he'd accepted in a small village within Valen. Find a missing woman, likely dead, for her worried, likely now widowed, husband. A local hunter, he mentioned that a pack of wolves had been particularly active lately. Geralt noted that, but was not worried. When questioning the children, he was told a mysterious woman had led Hannah into the forest a week prior. Geralt reviewed whether any of the spirit creatures of their world would trick a woman to her death in such a way. Geralt followed the tracks into the forest and when he felt he was nearly successful, he turned to find Hannah's sister behind him. Odd, that this woman would follow him into the forest, braving the danger in the woods merely to speak to him alone.
She had a lot to say, but mostly her point was that she would pay him double just to lie to the husband about Hannah's death. Geralt wasn't certain of much, but he knew one thing. And that was that he wasn't in the habit of changing or canceling a contract once he'd accepted. Geralt refused her, saying as much. She cursed him and stomped back to the village. Geralt considered whether it was the sister that had led Hannah to the forest. He wondered if he'd find a knife in the back of Hannah; he'd seen worse of humanity, to be honest.
However, when he found Hannah, she had not died by human hands. Shredded and torn; likely the work of a werewolf. Huh. It changed nothing, but it did poke a hole in his sister murder theory. He pondered if he should just report his findings to the hunter now or not. He'd confirmed the death of the wife. Technically, his job was finished. But...no. The scent was strong, the tracks still clear, and a storm was coming. The werewolf would be and must be dealt with.
Following all the signs to a remote hut in the forest, he drew his silver sword and barged in unannounced. But no one, man or beast, was home. Instead, he found a diary detailing the thoughts of his werewolf....great. The hunter who'd given him the contract WAS the werewolf. He sighed. He wasn't getting paid for this, was he? Investigating further, he found a cave system beneath the hut. Mapping the cave, he went back out and hid in the foliage downwind of the hut and meditated until nightfall. Hearing the sounds that indicated that his prey, along with a few wolven friends, had arrived, Geralt drank a Swallow potion and pulled his silver sword once more.
It was time.

So much for that. Guess at level 4 I just don't have the right stuff to kill level 7 werewolf.
So, I go off and found another mission, level 6. Find a beast in the woods killing transports.
Turns out to be Squirrel Elves. They're stealing from the northern king and out of refugee bellies, so I kill them. Go back to the quest giver and tell him it was Elves and not a beast. And he says he's going to make a roster of all the local elves and hang every tenth one. That'll teach them, he says.
And I scream really ticked off at the screen. A measly 30 gold and a pass across the river; all it cost was my soul apparently. Every single time I think I do the right thing. They say Hawke made things worse? Really? Geralt of the cursed hands doesn't count?

Geralt does his best with each quest but you're not certain of the outcome.
Phoray, just want to say how much fun reading your posts are on your playthrough, it's like playing W3 for the first time!
I just.. I mean, she had a bow on her back! She could hunt her own food! So it just seemed that murdering people for food seemed a bit of a stretch! Didn't know I was going to get city elves killed. Damn Dalish.

That is sad. Didn't know the out come of that quest if you killed the elves. It is one of things I like in the game, not knowing what will happen. Geralt does his best with each quest but you're not certain of the outcome.
Phoray, just want to say how much fun reading your posts are on your playthrough, it's like playing W3 for the first time!
Well I think this example Phoray showed was one of the annoyances I had with the game. Just darkness for the sake of darkness.

dragontartareIt's a contract. "Woodland beast" in Valen. Suggested level is 6. The only other option to get a discounted river ticket was to help the shady guy's brother.. -erm- except I hadn't known at the time that that was important so... I had failed it an hour of play before he'd asked. He wasn't happy to hear his brother was dead. I figured the guy was just some battlefield thief! and moved on with play, thinking"next time I'll be better at that stuff." Haha ;

This is what my quest page says.
" it turned out the woods did not hide "a Shaggy fuck knows what" as the captain of the Guard put it, but a band of Scoia'tael. They were the ones attacking the transports. Though The Witcher codex would recommend charting a neutral course in such a situation, Geralt sailed according to his own moral compass. His needle pointed decidedly towards the elves' much deserved death."
Wah, that's totally what I was thinking- not. Ignoring murdering Squirrel Elves was the NEUTRAL path? How is that neutral?!

Find a horse drawing... Find a dog drawing. It explodes! I die. Reload. Finds a squid drawing and I fight my clone. Sigh. Doesn't find any other drawings. Ises internet to Figure out how to use a torch. Success! I am a torch weilder. I go looking down the hall. No good. Well...Maybe touching the dog drawing is required. I put my shield on, touch it, dodge away before it can explode and it damages me anyway. Even though I'm like ten feet away. okay. but I don't die this time. Round round round round. Can I get up that cliff? No? Well. All that leaves is jumping into this dark hole. I'll probably die. Better save. Jumps onto ledge. Geranimoooooooo! Splash into a pool of water. I laugh. I usually get super irritated by being lost and puzzles but I guess these are just right on the line for me. My torch doesn't work, obviously cuz I'm swimming. Back to the witcher senses. Loot a sword. Look round. Ah! The horse drawing.
