A headcanon-y moment I've been thinking of between Ryder and Jaal (might even have to write a full-on fanfic for it at some point). This would take place well into the game. They and the rest of the team are setting up camp on a Mustafaresque volcano type planet, to do research or whatever, there's like a pyjak they need to recover on it or something... anyway. Ryder has noticed that Jaal has been quiet lately. Not talking to everyone else. Keeping himself distant. Later, Ryder finds Jaal standing at the precipice to a volcano, the lava shooting out and flaming (but there at a safe distance, don't worry). Ryder asks Jaal what has been troubling him. Jaal reveals his government have reluctantly struck a deal with the Kett, despite the protests from the people. Jaal has been called back to the angara homeworld, to join the angara and kett in their final assault on the Nexus and the other Milky Way species, hoping to drive them out of the galaxy for good. Jaal is deeply conflicted. He reveals he was sent to serve aboard the Tempest as a spy for the angara, but stopped as soon as he saw the goodness in everyone, how they weren't invaders or wishing to cause harm. He stopped because he had fallen in love with Ryder. And now he must choose. To stay with Ryder and the Tempest crew, and disobey his government's orders. Or leave, rejoin his people, and do what he can to deter the government from working with the kett. To tie in with the choice and dialogue dynamic, its up to Ryder to either persuade or dissuade him to stay or not. If Ryder convinces Jaal to stay, they kiss for the first time, against a backdrop of a volcanic eruption. its pretty cliche and soppy i know, but i've been thinking up all sorts of different scenarios and stuff while i waitEdit: Ninja'd by Pon.ee and her awesome headcanon too!  both like the romantic backdrops |

Then yeah, it could be interesting if we were tracking a rogue Angaran faction or something. Maybe that's how we trespass into their space and they capture us, as the trailer might suggest. What if the Roekaar (?) is another race though? "Fits the Roekaar profile" could be talking about the tracks on the ground, which doesn't fit any species we've seen actually? I'm probbaly wrong though idk |

Hmm trying to think of more cutesy headcanons for romance got me thinking. What kind of baggage do you think Jaal has? I mean in the trilogy it tended to very much center around family or most of the romance Squaddies, Miranda's father & sister, Thane's son, Tali's father, Jacob's father............. So I started thinking. Maybe Jaal is quite cold at the beginning. Maybe it gets to a point where you're getting quite close and he starts to realise it and then he pulls away and it's hard to understand why. You thought you had a deep connection? Like everything you did just seemed to click with each other. Maybe it takes almost dying or a really bad combat situation that looks pretty hopeless for him to open up. Maybe he had someone before, or at least was interested? Maybe they died, or led him on only to break his heart and in reality he is just so scared of what's growing between you because he's felt it before and it was so cruelly snuffed out. He's terrified of what you'll say when he tells you, maybe you aren't actually interested in anything deeper, maybe you're just dabbling because of curiosity? And then you just smile slightly, maybe a little relieved huff when you finally realise why he's been so cold to you. And you just lean against him, you don't say anything but you feel his arms curl around you tightly. Like he's almost scared to let go and he lets out a breath he didn't realise he'd been holding. Zooms out to you both silhouetted against a starscape on the Tempest. I should write fanfiction. you totally should then send me a link to it as would love to read it XD xx |

The fish tank on the Normandy wasn't nearly romantic enough ALL MY FISH WERE DEAD WAY TO KILL THE MOOD  haha yes I know, my fish usually died as well, so the whole fish tank backdrop wasn't nearly romantic enough. However, there was this absolute gem from ME3, where Kaidan rejoins the Normandy after the Cerberus coup, and Shepard can console him in the Starboard Observation lounge and talk to him, and it is so romantic against that starry backdrop, I die. Thankfully we have a beautiful panoramic view of space (screw the whole weaknesses argument) in the Pathfinder's Cabin, and the developers have said that this view is changeable based on where you are in the Helios Cluster, so we can park it near nebulas, or dying stars, or against other romantic backdrops, PERFECT for romance scenes  |

And you just lean against him, you don't say anything but you feel his arms curl around you tightly. Like he's almost scared to let go and he lets out a breath he didn't realise he'd been holding. Also I totally agree, but I was thinking he actually may have been married once? Or was in a very serious relationship or something. And then his significant other died, or something terrible happened to them or something. I don't think rejection would make him so afraid, but if he's a naturally caring and gentle person, and then his significant other dies? That would probably fuck him up. And so he decides he's never going to feel that pain again, and that's why he starts acting cold? To the point where it looks like he has a problem with Ryder or something. Of course then there's a lot of tension and finally Ryder confronts him, like "If you have a problem with me, you can just leave the team, you know" and then Jaal opens up because he decides it's worth it, that Ryder is worth it. Because true love and all that. And then ALL the bang (ok sorry I'll stop) |

Not saying people who have lost partners shouldn't find love again, by all means get out there and find someone. That being said I think what mostly freaked me out about it was the memory thing. Like him slipping into memories that made him look pretty psycho about his dead wife. It reaaaaally freaked me out XD I dunno what kind of baggage I'd expect for Jaal but every Bioware character has something haha. |

For actual ingame romance: I would be interested in a bad ex story. But it has to be done reaaaaaally well... Its not an uncommon story ark and can seem cheap if not handled carefully. But getting payback on the bad ex who hurt my poor bby could be very satisfying. (I still hope to meet Andruil one day. I wll so kick her stupid rapist ass.)As long as its not another dead wife trope XD So please no dead ex... This was why I had a hard time romancing Thane. As much as I love the romance otherwise, Irikah is always in the back of my mind and somehow I was never convinced to be more than a fling. I always felt like Irikah was his otl, esp. as the mom of his child... I don't think I can handle another one like Thane. EDIT: A dead sibling I could handle. Maybe a little sister or brother who died b/c of an accident and he has some really bad separation anxiety / fear of loosing someone. Which is why he is afraid of feeling for someone (dear Ryder). |

Mark me down for very much against Jaal having a dead significant other. No. Thank. You. I think that's the laziest character baggage anyways, in my opinion. I was never a fan of that backstory. I'd rather not hear about any past relationships of his, honestly. Maybe if Ryder was an older or more experienced character I could get with that type of romance. But it seems odd to put a 22 year old with someone that has that kind of deep romantic baggage. Ugh, I'm still a little not happy that Ryder is that young. I don't like playing characters younger than me, even if it's just by two years.  |

I never romanced Thane. Also if Jaal had a dead spouse I imagine it would be like. In the past. A lot. Enough time to be ready to commit to a new relationship. And definitely no kids lmao imagine dad Jaal with his Angaran dad jokes (I mean if he wasn't a romance option it could actually be pretty cute. Also impossible bc missions and everything , but hey)

I'm going to take a chance and say Jaal doesn't know a thing about romancing. Sure he knows the courtship rituals probably, but he reminds me a lot of Zenith in SWTOR. The slowly forming friendship that finally climaxed with him reaching out to my Consular to shake her hand and thank her was very fulfilling. He was so hard to talk to through most of the game and very much a loner. I hope he returns soon... and my husband is still missing too...  |

What if he had trauma from being exposed to an abusive relationship as a child, as i was scared of relationships and getting too close to people and there was a lot of abuse to my mother when i was a child. But it took a lot of effort from my boyfriend to get me not over think that something bad would happen to me like what i saw when i was younger. Just an idea to throw about. But it took me years to trust him and that taught me not every person who has an extra 'leg' - if you wish to say that (just dont want to put other words if you know what i mean) - is not necessarily going to beat you up or mess with your head. again its just an idea to throw about xx |

Maybe he doesn't have anyone? Jack is the only character we've had before in the trilogy with anything similar but I don't mean to that kind of degree. Maybe his family is gone, either moved on without him for reasons or left for the next place if you catch my meaning. Maybe he's eager to come along with you when you first meet because there literally isn't anything to go home to. The tempest becomes a home and the Pathfinders team a big weird family. And then there's you. He can't even imagine going back because his planet, his old home just isn't as colourful as you are. Everything is stale when you're not there. And you're just so enticed by everything, everything in this galaxy is new to you. The water is sweeter and the sky more vibrant and the light on your face when you see something new is like a guiding star.  Help me I'm losing it |

Maybe he doesn't have anyone? Jack is the only character we've had before in the trilogy with anything similar but I don't mean to that kind of degree. Maybe his family is gone, either moved on without him for reasons or left for the next place if you catch my meaning. Maybe he's eager to come along with you when you first meet because there literally isn't anything to go home to. The tempest becomes a home and the Pathfinders team a big weird family. And then there's you. He can't even imagine going back because his planet, his old home just isn't as colourful as you are. Everything is stale when you're not there. And you're just so enticed by everything, everything in this galaxy is new to you. The water is sweeter and the sky more vibrant and the light on your face when you see something new is like a guiding star. Help me I'm losing itYou say the sweetest things!  |

I have a thing for characters that have been through rough shit, or abused be it emotionally or sexually or anything. I think that's already been done with Fenris though, I don't think they'd go for that again with Jaal.
Also just a thought but if Jaal has PTSD I will cry
