I have a thing for characters that have been through rough shit, or abused be it emotionally or sexually or anything. I think that's already been done with Fenris though, I don't think they'd go for that again with Jaal. Also just a thought but if Jaal has PTSD I will cry I find those characters compelling too, but I'm just not a fan of their major baggage being from a past romance. We've seen far too much of that with male BioWare LIs anyways! |

Not sure what they will do with him. I think the devs said this will be a "lighter" game? Not sure how heavy they will go in the companions back story. I'm sure there will a lot if drama in the story.

Personally I kind of want Jaal to be like this prince among men. No sad sap issues or past, just this calm cool and collected slightly superior-than-you dude. Maybe he can have like mild anger issues or something lol but just give me someone like that for a change, BioWare. Let my character be totally enamoured.

Maybe his society is polygamy? Maybe they have multiple partners in their lives. I don't want that to be my LI, but it would interesting to see in a race. Or maybe thats why he doesn't want to stay there and volunteers to join your cause. like he wants a relationship (even if its just friendship) but a relationship that lasts, not like a quick breeding programme to keep the species alive. And that way he would easily be bisexual and into aliens partly to rebel and the other as he knows thats his best bet to what he desires? xx |

I'm not too bothered playing as Ryder, since if they are 22, that's only 1 year older than me, but I would be a bit unsure if any of the LI options are a lot older than Ryder  I think Jaal might be young for his species, or like the angara equivalent of 30s or early 40s maybe? I personally like that I'm playing as a character a bit closer to my age, since Shepard was a lot older, like early 30s IIRC? To be honest there is a very young and untested vibe about a lot of the Tempest crew. |

Well I'm 33 but my mind will always be a youthful 16, so I can easily fit the mindset of our 22 year old Pathfinder. Age is only a number! Either way, my attraction to older men has never wavered even when I was a teen, and his eyes definitely show he is not young, but not old either, so maybe my real life age or older. I honestly see him as one of the cooler headed characters. Liam might be a handful. He has a temper it seems. |

Or as something lighter, he has been indulged but due to a high military rank he doesn't want a relationship (to start with) because he is worried the person would get hurt. But when he realises they can hold their own and he can always protect them, maybe that gives him comfort but has no experience= nerves XD xx

I don't know anything about PTSD and I'm sorry if any depiction of it I say is wrong or hurtful to people in any way. Trigger warning? But like! Triggers are everywhere right? It can be anything. Lets assume that the PTSD has been caused by an abuser rather than a scenario like a battlefield. Jaal is on the Tempest he's been there for months now and is a certified part of this weird family. He gets along with everyone to a degree but the Pathfinder is just something else. They've been asking constantly about his planet, his people, his customs and as he starts to realise you're more than just interested in his people he starts to probe about your customs too. It gets to the point that you want to share something with him that's pretty special to you, you've been saving them; for 600 years technically, for a special occasion and they're your absolute favourite. You give him a small box wrapped in bright tissue paper, he seems moderately amused that is mirrors his own skin in colour. You are positively brimming with excitement because you just have to know how he'll react. It's a pretty divisive treat at home so you know this can go one of two ways.
He removes to lid and pushes the paper aside and it hits him. Just a small scent, flowery and sweet and his stomach drops. It's them. It smells just like them. That heady perfume they always wore, that he became so accustomed to. It used to cling to his clothes and took months for it to leave him after he'd scrubbed so hard he'd lost the feeling in his fingers. You know instantly something is wrong. The box falls from his hands and his eyes seem distant, but his breathing picks up and you're instantly by his side. You remember stories your father used to tell of his war torn friends losing their grip as they fell into memories of events that lingered at the edges of their nightmares.
It takes time for his breathing to even. But you've sat there with him for what felt like hours. Whispering sweet nothings and reassurances, just letting him know you're there, you always will be. He makes a small keen every now and again as he struggles his way back to calm and with one particular heart breaking noise your eye catches the pink tissue paper. It's then you decide Turkish Delight isn't your favourite anymore. |

Yeah, count in me on on the please no dead lover thing. Hell, no past lover/tragic story involving ex thing. Every single male LI in Mass Effect tells you about a past lover, and half of them have some past drama stuff involving her - Kaidan had his beautiful girl he killed someone over, Thane had a dead wife, Garrus had 'reach and flexibility' girl and Jacob had Miranda. And then Steve Cortes has a dead husband too! In DAO Zevran had his past love he killed and then you potentially help him kill another ex-lover. And Anders had Karl who he murder-knifes in front of you (though you only find out he was a lover if you play a male Hawke)...  I don't mind some dark thing being in a character's past, but this is one over-used trope that seems to plague male LIs specifically that just needs to die already. /RANT Phew. Sorry for that, I'm really not trying to be mean to the people who made this suggestion, I'm just very against it.  It wouldn't mind if Jaal's romance proves a bit challenging because of who he is/how he was raised/what is expected of him. I'd just like the source of that conflict to be something fresh that we haven't seen before. and I'm just generally tired of hearing about ex-girlfriends! Especially where it's very easy, with Ryder's age and background, to imagine s/he's never had a serious relationship themselves. |

Since I was talking about dollmakers earlier, I ended up playing with some and making my Ryder! I used this one because though it's not Mass Effect-y, it has some good and varied customization options. Unfortunately there's not too many of these that let you make a male character. Basically what I'm saying is I want to see your Ryders, folks. I love stuff like this!To put it back on topic, I think it's hard to say what age Jaal is. Yeah he has some wrinkles around his eyes but that could just be how his race's skin is. Something about him gives me a relatively youthful, almost cocky vibe. Maybe it's his actual eyes and the way he moves? Or maybe it's just some odd effect of his bright coloration. What we do know is that clearly he's seen battle, from that scar. But I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't super duper experienced. Our team is purposefully skewing relatively young and untested this time around, after all. Minus Drack, who already fills the highly experienced warrior who's seen some shit role. |

I will be 34 this year and each day it does lessen. I was nearing 20 when it all went wrong and around 24 when it became a living nightmare and it took 10 years just to stand up on my own feet again. Funny enough playing ME actually helped me cope. I'm just glad with MEA I am so much better now and can hopefully enjoy it without feeling depressed. |

I wouldn't mind him being pretty dedicated to his work, whatever that may be (probably something military or combat related), and not having any serious past relationships because of this. This could also tie back into him being a bit more of a challenging romance; he treats being on Ryder's team as any other job and acts super professional at first, but with a little time and effort he starts to admire Ryder and lower his guard. I feel like witnessing his subtle changes in behavior and then finally getting him to let you into his life would be really gratifying. Unless it ends up taking way too long and then the whole thing just feels tedious. |

If we get hair even remotely as elegant as what you chose for your ideal character then I couldn't be happier. I'm tired of those lame buns and buzzcuts. I think Cora's hair is pretty cool too, especially with the ombre look. On a Jaal related note, I hope we can have some similarly entrancing eye colors for our PC, so that when they meet for the first time, both cannot stop staring into each others eyes teehee... |

I'd just like the source of that conflict to be something fresh that we haven't seen before. and I'm just generally tired of hearing about ex-girlfriends! Especially where it's very easy, with Ryder's age and background, to imagine s/he's never had a serious relationship themselves.
