Yeah, a sequel with most of the same cast is a must. They could lose Peebee though, as she's too much for my taste. Just my opinion though.

Agreed!
I respect your opinion about Peebee, not all characters are liked by everyone.

I agree, sucks about the DLC stuff. Will still get the comics and books, since then one could make a plot and stuff to fit what should have happened in the game using fanfics. And another thing- I would love to see more on the Angara and the Kett. But looks like the published novels and comics don’t even have them… (correct me if I am wrong on that). At least there’s fanfics… I have been thinking (and to help keep the thread going)- if in Mass Effect Andromeda 2, the wrong choices can get your squad members taken by the Kett and worst case scenario Exalted, I would seriously be if that happened to Jaal. Would be the cause of a restart of the game... I have no interest in the books or comics...almost wish I did. Fanfiction for MEA has been really almost nonexistent. I think I've read everything I'm interested in and most of the ones I started were just abandoned by the authors. If I made a choice that resulted in a squad member getting taken by the Kett, I would most definitely reload. Unless that choice saved another squad member (you know they love doing that to us). Jaal would be an always-save. I really do hope for a MEA2. I don't understand all of the people calling for them to do a remaster of the trilogy instead. I have the trilogy. I've played it many times. I don't want to buy it and play it again, no matter how pretty they make it look. I'm still writing!! When I don't have 10k words to translate/proofread...I realize that's not much comfort considering that currently I'm writing 1 totally fringe fic, hahaha - but I have plans. I don't mind if there are barely any readers left along with barely any new MEA content, I'm still planning on finishing my Akksul, the R&D sequel and also a quarian fic because DAMN IT THERE ARE GOING TO BE MEA QUARIANS IF I HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY ABOUT IT. I gotta say though, having a vanishing readership isn't exactly encouraging - I'm doing it for the few I have left, sure, but I'm really disappointed that the whole fandom seems to be collapsing after the DLC news, like, there are still tons of awesome things about MEA to explore and many, many creative directions we can go. I know it's different when you know there's nothing to look forward to, but... we invented fanfictions to go beyond the scope of an original work to begin with, I don't see what's changed about that, apart from just being disappointed. Anyway, I'll stop grousing over it, it's purely coming from my perspective as one of those writers, it was an awesome experience while it lasted - and I still love the way the stories turned out/are turning out. Also Happy New Year, guys! My life has literally been turned upside down this holiday season and I'm kind of in a precarious situation in general, but that's not going to stop me.

That’s good! Hopefully your writings inspire others to continue in the fandom!
I am doing my part as well. While I have self-doubts about my own skills, I am not going to give up either, especially with the potential. And so true about fanfics, they’re meant to expand upon things! Like I have thought of some things the game didn’t tap into, such as the possibility of Ryder worrying about the Kett getting their filthy claws on their love interest…(that’s something I don’t want to have happen to Jaal, there would be biotic fury if they tried!)
That is ok, we all are different as writers. And everyone has their own preferences.
Hope things get better for you. That’s good you’re not letting it stop you.
Happy New Year to everyone here too!

I'll never stop reading your fics and it's more then just being a mass effect fan, I swear you could probably pull me into any of your stories, mass effect or not because you're just that damn good. I'm honestly a little surprised that more people are not that into all the fan-fiction now that there is no more DLC, some of my favorite fics are about character's where there is no longer new canon material being written. I mean for me that's all the more reason why I'm scampering for fics, I don't want to let some of the characters go. Happy new year! I hope your life isn't causing you too much trouble and that everything turns around for the better. You're great person and if life kicks you in the shin, kick back. Oh and as for that Quarian fic, I'll be waiting.....

quarian fic because DAMN IT THERE ARE GOING TO BE MEA QUARIANS IF I HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY ABOUT IT. Hey I've probably posted in this thread, like twice back when Andromeda was relatively new, (my primary thread of operations is the one for Reyes because I am still not over Kadara tbh) but I guess I've got a special Quarian sense because I love them so much! (Still not over Kal'Reegar and the travesty of a storyline that befell him.) Can't wait to check it out when it is ready! t... we invented fanfictions to go beyond the scope of an original work to begin with, I don't see what's changed about that, apart from just being disappointed. I feel the same way- I've written primarily Andromeda fics and it knocked the wind out of my sails when they announced no DLC. I'm getting back, but like, I feel angry that Bioware doesn't want to release a DLC that could change the tide. It would be a calculated risk- but with time, hard work, and listening to us, they could've done something that would've been cool. Here's hoping Andromeda 2 (if there is one) proves to be like Mass Effect 2 and knock it out of the park! I hope readership begins to come back, especially with the Quarian Arc novel on the horizon. Mass Effect's universe is too good not to explore, you know?

So!... I'm alive! And if you all will indulge me a moment, I will share why that's special news under wraps: This morning in Hawaii we got a ballistic missile threat warning on our phones which (thankfully) turned out to be a false alarm, due to an employee pushing the wrong button - but for about half an hour (38 minutes to be exact) I wasn't sure if my family here and I would still be alive by midday, partly because there are no shelters. Yes, you read correctly (if this news hasn't made it out yet), we have NO SHELTERS - when we are the most exposed state of them all in the middle of the Pacific and also the ONLY STATE where we can't actually get out and away because we're on a bunch of islands! Not that the 12 or so minutes they estimated until impact would have been enough to do more than make a few goodbyes over the phone, and I was basically doing that, calling my family here and in Europe and my mom on the other side of the island - I did not enjoy this experience in the slightest, needless to say. Every time I think back to the moment I read the emergency alert for the first time I feel a glimmer of that same panic rise in me, because I don't know what the hell I'm supposed to do should this have been a real threat. I.e. if this happens again, I'm probably going to do what I did now: close the windows, hide in the bathroom because it gives me the illusion that I'm at least a little safe, even though it's a useless gesture - especially on the third floor, and fervently search for nonexistent news on my phone while answering and making a million calls. I'm probably going to have nightmares of the sirens actually going off this time, confirming our worst fears that it's really happening.
I'm angry and frightened and I just needed to rant that. But overall the important thing is that we're absolutely OK... for the time being at least, if a bit rattled. I'm going to respond to all of you soon, I just needed to put that out there because this is not a great day.

That is absolutely terrifying and I'm sorry you had to deal with that. I'm always thinking about my family that lives in Hawaii and how would I be able to contact them if something like that were to happen.
I guess now might be the perfect time to make a plan, stock up on food, water, first aid supplies and designate a meeting place with your family in case you get separated. I'm not saying anything is going to happen but having a plan however small can't hurt.
I'm glad you're ok, wish you the best and I hope you get to relax soon.

I'm glad that alert was false and that everyone is okay. On the Jaal level, I'm playing the game again. I am close to going to Kadara, so that means I'll be able to start Jaal's personal quest before too much longer. Love that last part!

To Gwyvian- so sorry you had to go through that. Can’t imagine how terrifying that would be. __
I did the Archon’s flagship recently, this time I looked for datapads and stuff and paid more close attention. Last time on my first playthrough I rushed.
It made the mission more chilling...such as seeing that one Salarian about to be cut open and the Kett scientist just darkening the window so we couldn’t see. And that energy field that caught the team…
Is it me or did Jaal look terrified while we were stuck in that field?
And also, I wonder, how would your Ryder react if any of the following happened to Jaal-
1. Exaltation
2. Being experimented on by Kett in some lab
3. forced to work in a Kett slave camp
My female!Ryder, Sakura Ryder, would be-
1. Very sad and heartbroken. The thought of that happening to him, in my headcanon, is what gives her nightmares…
2. She’d wreck biotic havoc. It would become, for the Kett- run or die. I know there’s no ‘biotic force choke’ but she could improvise. That’s what would happen to the lead scientist in that lab- Sakura would use the nearest improvised object, and use it to choke the scientist to death.
3. Same as above with biotic fury. She’d free everyone and tear through the Kett.

I really miss the bustle on here... Glad you are doing okay! I also miss it being more active in the Jaal thread. I really hope we get a sequel someday to spice up the thread. More Jaal please BioWare!

I was SO looking forward to quarians showing up. I probably shouldn't complain because it takes me months to respond sometimes, but there are so many things we all could still be talking about! If MEA itself is defunct, it falls on us fans to keep it all alive and breathing, right? Right? So good. So glad you liked it! I'm glad at least some of you still read it, hahaha. The numbers have been depressing to say the least, but then Akksul is very niche, so I'm not too surprised. I really like how the story is progressing though, so I'm determined to finish it anyway!

So true, its up to fanfic writers to keep things going for now until we get a sequel. (I am not giving up hope!)
I am even planning on a Quarian Ark fanfic too.
Will be doing more Ryder and Jaal fanfics as well. They deserve a hard-won happy ending, and the loose ends that need tying up… such as the fact the Kett are still out there.
How would your Ryder react if they had a nightmare about something horrible happening to Jaal? Like...*shivers*...Exaltation?
Sakura Ryder would likely, especially if it involved Exaltation, awaken with a scream and a cold sweat.

Hey, hey, we're totally going to fill the quarian void!! Actually I'm just writing chapter 1 of an MEA quarian fic I've been planning since a while... I finally decided it's time to start. I was thinking maybe I should dabble in Jaal fics, too. I've been only doing niche stuff so far because it's my preference, there's just more breathing room and I feel more in control of the story (ergo Evfra and even more niche Akksul - like, no one really does chapter by chapter Akksul except me ), but since MEA fandom seems to have gone so quiet I feel like there might be more room now to draw people in with more prominent characters. Also, I agree, they deserve a happy endiiiiing... Hmm, I think my Ryder would claw her way awake, trying to sob in that way dreams don't let you sometimes and wake moaning "Nooo," over and over. Once she finally shakes the paralysis of sleep, definitely she would check if Jaal was alive or not, then probably cling to him the entire rest of the night like a clam and just keep him safe with sheer willpower. I could write a killer angsty scene with that subject, I think.

I could write a killer angsty scene with that subject, I think.
Hope the Quarian Ark fanfic goes well!
Hope the fanfics go well!
Oh! Would love to see that kind of Ryder/Jaal story, would love to see what you can come up with. Since I can imagine Ryder would worry about something like that happening to Jaal...

Challenge accepted! Thank you. I've got a lot of this quarian story planned out now, I think it's going to be pretty good if I can pull it off. I have some concerns, I want to keep it canon and realistic, but I'm trying to work around these issues by limiting my protagonist's field of vision, if that makes sense. We'll see how it turns out!

Yes to all the things!!! There isn't enough MEA fanfiction around, and many of the ones I started were abandoned by the authors. I will be sitting here, eagerly awaiting anything you fanfic authors publish. Thanks for entertaining us with your stories.

I understand, I do the same as well. I want to create and expand, but at the same time I know the dangers of going too far all too well. It’s...quite a bit of story. Putting it under a spoiler tag since its quite long, created a TL:DR version after the spoiler tag box-
There's a reason I like Archive of Our Own better than Fanfiction.net, and that is because I haven't had hurtful abusive comments there since I joined on 12/06/16. Joined Fanfiction.net years earlier on 5/30/10.
Back then, my fanfics weren't as good. And I would do multi-crossovers. Once had fifteen varying stories, all were crossovers.
And geez, if someone were to stumble upon the comments back then, they'd be left wondering if I did trivialize something really bad. I didn't, otherwise someone I know who reads them would’ve told me to fix the problem.
Some of the comments were people trying to reach out to provide constructive criticism, but unfortunately they were drowned out in a sea of hate and flames.
Two comments I still remember are something along the lines of, will put in quotation marks though I don't remember the precise wording anymore- "If my kid wrote this, I would whip them until they were bleeding from the welts." and another was along the lines of "Stop writing, drink puke, and die".
Never had anything like that in Archive of Our Own. And what I don’t like about Fanfiction.net- you can’t seem to get rid of bad signed reviews and you can’t disable anonymous comments. This is just a recipe for disaster. Archive of Our Own lets users do it. I keep anonymous reviews on the Archive active, but can choose to deactivate if I need to.
Not helping things was the discovery that two of my fanfics were taken and used without my permission. Ripped apart and hurtful things said.
There’s a reason my oldest fanfic in Fanfiction.net has a publish date reading ‘2014’. I deleted those old fanfics, they weren’t that good and were attracting nothing but trouble.
I don’t want to describe the two groups. I fear I’d draw their attention here. Then there would be trouble. So for our sake, I won’t say anything more about them.
After all of that, I changed my writing style to past tense. And also started to describe in my fanfics. At first, early on, I was so paranoid of the hate returning if I didn’t describe that it ended up slowing down pacing way too much since I was describing way too much. I am starting to get the hang of the balance I think, need to keep writing and practicing!
TL:DR- I prefer Archive of Our Own due to past negative experiences on Fanfiction.net when I let my creativity run wild and go too far. And it lead to a lot of problems. So I am more cautious now. And I describe in my fanfics because lack of description was one of the reasons for the trouble.

I'm sorry to hear you had such a stressful relationship with FF.net, comments of that caliber are needlessly brutal! Writing fanfiction should be a safe space for both author and readers in my opinion, not everyone was born a professional writer and even the best of writers had to start somewhere and learn their craft, it's not something you learn overnight. Besides, we're doing this for free on our own time, that by itself should afford you some respect - the fact that your writing doesn't appeal to someone is just the nature of creative work, not everyone will be pleased and no one should expect that. I honestly never understood the amount of vitriol some people can pour into others who make a creative effort that doesn't meet their personal standards, I mean, it's not like they paid money or made commitments of any kind, if someone wants to offer feedback that the author can use that's great, but the things you quoted are way out of bounds. For my part I got lucky in that respect so far; originally I was writing fanfictions almost a decade ago on a forum, not BSN, but by that time I had been writing quite a bit of other stuff so what I actually posted wasn't as poorly developed as my very first stumblings (my parents happen to be linguists specialized in literature, so I had the benefit of awesome feedback at home when I was first learning the craft) and then I stopped posting my stuff online for about 8 or so years. I had positive experiences for the most part, but I was super concerned about getting my "serious" writing moving instead of pouring all my creative juices into projects that would never be officially published and perhaps never really that special in a sea of similar fanfics, but honestly I had a lot of room for improvement still. I perfected my style actually by taking one of my OC fics from that very site, deleting it and turning it into a novel, the first one I ever finished - but it never amounted to much (mostly because I want to work over it again before submitting it, I only ever sent it to one or two publishers for consideration). Now that, along with a lot of my other "serious" or "turned serious" stuff, whether finished or partway done, is just sitting on my shelf waiting for me to find the time, inspiration and motivation to do this again... and meanwhile life happened and all that, now since MEA came out and I became a Jaal fan I found my way here and I decided to return to fanfictions because why the hell not? It's not like I was actually USING my free time to work on my serious stuff and I found MEA and everyone on this thread to be great motivation for me to at least write in general, just anything at all; that has had it's desired effect in turn, since then I've found my muse again in my main work. For my new work, I was posting on Tumblr exclusively for a short time but readers kept asking me why I'm not on AO3 so I expanded there - I gotta say, the responses I got from readers on both sites were absolutely phenomenal (I haven't received a single negative criticism - not even a constructive one - it's all just amazingly positive), I am so pleased by how that whole experience turned out with my first "comeback" story. I did sign up for FF.net not long ago actually, just posting that first story since it's finished along with what I have for Akksul, but I haven't received any comments yet from anyone, so we'll see how that turns out - if anyone will even say anything now, considering the state of the fandom - but if I would start to get the kind of responses you described I think I'd just stop posting there. I go where I'm wanted and where the majority of readers actually want to read my stuff, it's not like I want to force my narratives on anyone. Still, right now my main concern is more about how few people are still around to read my niche stuff, that's why I wanted to expand to FF.net in the first place, tap into some unknown audiences. Anyway, so my quarian chapter 1 is going pretty well so far! I'm really liking how my protagonist turned out. I've got about 5 or so chapters planned out in advance, although I'm still vacillating over some details - the thing that's holding me back now is that I haven't read the MEA tie-in novels yet and I don't want to go against anything canon inadvertently, but from what I've heard pretty much in-game knowledge should be enough for what I'm planning. I don't want this fic to be so much in the spotlight of the game's events, more on the periphery, dabbling in some alternative perspectives (I'm thinking e.g. Ryder is off doing xyz on, say, Elaaden and meanwhile my protagonist is hearing about it over on Voeld or something like that). At least, that's my skeleton plan, it might change totally as I advance in the actual story, but basically I want to expand on MEA and show a different side of it I guess you could say. Plus I'm still undecided about the romance - there's gotta be romance because I'm a sucker for romance narratives, so there's going to be something, I just don't know which way to jump yet. (Maybe I'll just keep readers in suspense and let it just unfold as it wills...) I'm going to go off and plot now.

FTR, it's also way easier to search on AO3 than FF.net. For that reason alone I stick to AO3. Also, I pretty much always comment on the stuff I read. It's generally positive in some way but even if it's a criticism it's clear that it's my reaction to it (like, I felt like a mShenko fic had Kaidan dumping all over Shepard - and while I was promised it would get better I just couldn't handle it after a certain point) rather than it being terrible writing.

I finally got the time to kick back and read it and it was wonderful! I love how much the Moshae seems to troll Ryder and while the wait for more chapters can be painful, it's always worth it in the end. I'm glad you're alright, take care of yourself.

AWESOME. Commenting is SO awesome. Personally I think that there is such a thing as bad writing, from a professional standpoint, but that doesn't mean that it cannot grow or be chiseled - I only excelled at writing as much as I have because my father kept giving me feedback on what things I could flesh out more or change slightly, i.e. totally rewrite and edit it, but in the end I had a piece of work I was really proud of; so constructive criticism is great! What I think a lot of these abusive commenters don't - or won't - get is that it can be said and done kindly. There's a way to communicate with a writer that will inspire them to grow instead of cringe in pain. But it is also very true that a great deal of reading is an entirely subjective experience - there are certain things you can qualify objectively as "in need of work" (basic grammar or spelling, for instance, but even coherency and story structure), but a lot of what readers tend to try to give as constructive criticism ends up being a matter of taste because that's what's at the forefront. I personally find even the subjective feedback very useful sometimes, but then again it has to come from the right reader, they have to represent my chosen audience, i.e. the kind of people I'm writing this particular stuff for, and not everyone will like what you publish for sure, you have to just keep that in mind when reading comments. Speaking of commenting: yeah, so far AO3 is kind of my favorite because that's where I get the most feedback from readers - I mean I really appreciate getting tons of likes on Tumblr for the chapters I post, but I prefer by far reading what people liked about a given chapter, what questions they had, or what they though of the new information I revealed, e.g. readers were trying to figure out the identity of the antagonist in my first MEA fic all the way to the end and it was SO fun for me to be able to "interact" like that, modify my chapters based on where readers' attention was going to keep up the mystery, and so on. From that point of view AO3 is just the best and I don't even really mind that the kudos system is a "one per story" affair, it's offset by everything else I get. So far I really don't have anything to complain or serenade about yet at FF.net, so I'm withholding final judgement until I get some more statistics. But seriously, if it's abusive I'm staying away. I also don't want to spam with double posts, so if anyone here is interested, I posted chapter 1 of my new quarian fic! Observe: Chapter 1 of The Quarian Initiative and on AO3 and Fanfiction.net! I will be writing the chapters more frequently now, so the pain shall not be quite so much I hope! I'm hanging in there, I've got some good, positive things going on at the moment, my inspiration flow among them. (See above!)
