Bleh, I can't believe they actually caved into the pressure and changed a characters sexuality. It was a poor choice, and sets an awful precedent. The only bad part about this is now people are going to go to twitter and start demanding Bioware to make changes for them on this game or future games. But look on the bright side, Gay males finally have a gayilen in the Mass Effect series and he is plot-related. Bioware has shown that they are truly trying to make amends to the LGBT fans. Hopefully, they won't backtrack in future games. If they didn't know before, now they know that the LGBT people won't just accept crumbs. They need to treat all their fans equal and not try to just please one group. *prays for an ace spectrum character and romance*

Honestly, though, Bioware shot themselves in the foot by shutting down their forums and basically relegating any communication with fans to Twitter. Twitter is much more viral so #MakeJaalBi and any other tags can easily gain momentum and popularity, as shown by the Kotaku article. If they don't want us trying to talk to them with long, thoughtful posts on their forums about their game content, we have no choice but to go to Twitter. And by its nature Twitter doesn't allow discussion, it's all about grabbing as much attention as possible. I think this patch demonstrates that Bio didn't think things through when they retreated from interacting with fans.

There were a lot of conspiracy theories saying that BW was doing it pre-emptively to shut down a furor over Andromeda. Given how the game has been received, I find it hard to dismiss the idea entirely

Hey, everyone! So I haven't been posting much but just saw the news about Jaal and wanted to say just how happy I am for you guys... Having followed this thread on and off since before MEA's release, I know how much this means to so many of you, even those of you who didn't necessarily want to romance Jaal personally. I'm glad the ME team listened to their fans, recognized their mistake, and actually did something about it. So kudos to them. Hopefully they learned from this experience, and that that's reflected in the franchise's future with more balanced, quality romance options for all players. Anyway congrats to you guys, and I hope you enjoy your gaylien romance.

I wish the dialogue wouldn't do that. Sometimes I miss something good and never hear it again. Yep, reminds me off all the time SAM cut off my companions in the field when they start to banter, and because of SAM, it doesn't play again... sometimes I wish Ryder could mute SAM

Mixed feelings me, dunno how to feel about changing sexuality/revealing sexuality/adding sexuality to a character but at the same time this wasn't a cut/dry scenario, regardless of how people might (and will) characterize it. Would've liked expanded Reyes more BUT HAPPY GAY. The fact it isn't cut and dry is why I'm pretty okay with it. Jaal never turned Scott down, the romance just didn't come to fruition. It felt unfinished and strange. So this makes a lot more sense than changing Gil, for example. And the fact m/m was the only orientation not to get a squadmate option was definitely an inexcusable mistake they couldn't just brush aside. I would be deeply unhappy if this set a precedent, because it could just as easily be used to take away gay rep as to give it. But I'm fairly confident the uniqueness of this situation means it will be a one off. My bigger fear is that bioware say to themselves wow we gave the gays a big bone here, we can rest easy now! - when there are still so many issues W reyes and Gil etc.

I think things are missing and hopefully Scott won't have the cut flirt we have.

Do you guys know if the movie night glitch has been patched yet on NG+?
I'm really excited about actually having a date for movie night now. lol I did the Reyes romance before and, sadly, he doesn't show up for it. Having a movie night date and a endgame bridge scene is going to be a nice change. Although, too bad we couldn't have something with Reyes for those scenes, too.

I'm sure this has been said before, but for the ignorant people: They didn't change shit. Jaal was always intended to be bi but that content was cut for whatever reason. This is a restoration, not a change.
Which is almost beside the point. There would be nothing wrong if they simply 'caved to pressure', and that's exactly what they did in at least one other high profile instance with Garrus.
There was no complaining then or backlash then. I wonder why...?

But look on the bright side, Gay males finally have a gayilen in the Mass Effect series and he is plot-related. Bioware has shown that they are truly trying to make amends to the LGBT fans. Hopefully, they won't backtrack in future games. If they didn't know before, now they know that the LGBT people won't just accept crumbs. They need to treat all their fans equal and not try to just please one group. Gay people have to accept crumbs from the very beginning. I think we're just basically hoping it gets better, so it's the perpetual "maybe the next game will be better". This is why the entire ordeal about waiting for the next Mass Effect game to get better representation is unacceptable. Think about it, gays have never been a priority, even from the very beginning. Regardless, if one group has to have the least options, it's always the gay fanbase. I personally didn't mind too much since gay players are a minority, so I understand that business decision sometimes has to take precedent. Though for a refresher, with set sexuality, DAO, has 2 options for everyone, gay and lesbian has 1 each, DA2 goes for bisexuality for romance options, but the extra option goes for straight female. In DAI, 2 options for each, with the extra time, they added 2 more options exclusively for straight females, even for a cast of mostly males, the gay options would still be the same as everyone or less. With ME1 and 2, no gay option at all, only lesbian option for straight guys. With ME3, they reuse Kaidan from females and cutting out scenes from femShep, then Cortez, a custom face NPC. I didn't complain, in fact, I love ME3 with Kaidan, because even though it's crumb, we at least still have the first m/m squadmate in ME games, so that's progress. This is where the "Maybe the next game will be better" hope comes from. People see progress, people see that ME team is improving their treatment toward gay players. This is exactly why MEA was so disappointed, we go from a unique face squadmate in ME3, even as a reuse, to no m/m squadmate at all, with the bisexual option once again badly modded from Sarah, and a male NPC with the shortest romance content out of everyone, both of them have no unique face. It's regressing. Meanwhile, they gave straight males the most squadmate romances with very detailed and best choreographic scenes, longest out of everyone, on top of 2 extra romances options, while 2 exclusive options for straight females. They didn't even think that one of those options could easily made available for Scott as well, allowing Scott to have a unique face companion. I could care less if it's Jaal or Liam. Let just say it's Liam, even if I didn't like Liam as a male option, I would have no reason or cause to complain because they are mindful enough to include a squadmate romance for male players, as well as allowing gay players to have 3 romance options for the trophy. It means that they thought it out ahead of time, and gay players weren't last minute addition. We are not asking for special treatment. Reading comments on youtube or IGN make it seem like gay players want special treatment, but we're not. I'm not even asking for equal treatment since we have never gotten that. I think what I wanted simply was some thoughts and care going into gay players, so that we're not just some afterthoughts but an actual group Bioware thought of and considered when making the game. I think that's all. I simply cannot wait for another game, hoping it will get better, simply because it's their 4th game, they had 10 years to "get better". How much longer should we wait? In the next game, there would still be no guarantee that it would be better. It could just be another bisexual option being made for female first and then a gay NPC. I don't want to raise my expectation for it to simply get less than the bare minimum. It's not about the number of romance. A lot of people keep bringing it up as why gay romance got shafted, but it wasn't about that, at least for me. It's the feeling of gay romance being an afterthought that upset me. The trophy wanting us to romance 3 options while only having 2 options available is the issue. I don't mind having less options than other groups, but the trophy is just an indication that they didn't take gay players into consideration while creating game mechanics and trophies. This is the first step. They acknowledge they screwed up. I'm a bit more content toward Bioware now not because Jaal is bisexual but because Mass Effect team takes gay players into consideration.

Another thing I noticed about Jaal from a vid I saw where a girl didn't romance him, is on Meridian he greets you by hinting human parties are tame, so Jaal and other Angara like a good, wild party it seems. Reminds me of Sten's comment at the end of DAO, so Jaal is not a tame one. You can imagine him and Scott being very "creative" Iron Bull-style in the bedroom.

Well then. The precedent has been set. But that's a matter for the future. You let BioWare know they fucked up and how to fix it and they obliged. This at least is working as intended. Congratulations and many happy dickings!
