I would say no, they shouldn't be reprimanded, but you're free to think their opinion is wrong. I would say the same if someone said an LGBT person's opinion on straight LIs is less valid. It's a personal opinion, you can disgagree/refute, but it shouldn't be shut down full stop. I'm in favor of pretty lax moderation, though. Like I said, I don't think either side has ever broken what I'd think deserves moderator intervention in this thread. That's more or less the core principle we've tried to go by here. Unless it's some really heinous shit defined to the best of our ability in the Rules and Expectations, people are free to say their piece, and take or leave the pieces of others. ALOT of those posts are tongue in cheek, it's fuckin' salt. Ah but therein lies the issue. Your tongue in cheek salt post here is the shitpost of the politics thread, the random troll post of the MP board, or the more general form of "just joshin/kiddin/clownin around. Never serious, never meant as a true negative, just for lulz. So how to judge what's serious and what's not? Make a blanket statement that one side is always kidding and one side is always serious? Is that fair? Or rather, take it case by case, determine context and do your best to sort out the lulz from the real crazies? This is where first hand perception becomes important. There's a lot than can be missed when you're in different shoes. |

I'm sure you guys are doing your best, some don't intend to come off biased but, you have serious blinders on when it comes to the LGBT community here. Really don't think you can get where alot of our complaints are coming from unless you have actually experienced it. I've seen a decent amount of straight up serious anti-straight comments from people(talking in general, not specifically this forum) so while I think it's 100% true fact to say that it certainly is a far smaller beast than anti-LGBT I think it's silly to suggest that it merely doesn't exist. Nobody can fully understand another's experiences. You can't understand mine and I can't understand yours. but using that argument doesn't add to a discussion about the subject at hand so we can reach a mutual agreement. |

This is where first hand perception becomes important. There's a lot than can be missed when you're in different shoes. Ok but whose? The author, who determines intent? Or his audience on which those words make an impression? Obviously things can rub people the wrong way. So which is more important, intent or impression? By both measures, a single group can't claim sole sovereignty on a free pass or automatic condemnation. If intent matters, than neither the straight nor gay joker should be penalized for their antics if done in jest. And if impression is more important, both groups can be hurt by errant words. I think we need to find the balance along both spectrums. |
