They've actually been roleplaying as a neglected minority fanbase this entire time. :gasp:

Some franchise: This character is gay.
(Some) Straight Fans: AAA the NERVE of these companies pandering to the gayz and leaving behind their true, loyal fans: us straight people freaking out about the gay. As a not-homophobe, I declare my HATRED of this stupid decision to be not homophobia because it is uh just me not wanting them to pander!

It'll be nice to see whatever improvement is planned to arrive ('soon').
Though my expectations of whatever it is gaining universal approval, are low...

This is true.  Sadly though they would just skip that game and go play one of the other 99% of games that cater only to them.  doh! 

You just have to accept that part of Bioware's story-telling strategy is to have mandatory characters. There is really no debate here. They have them. They're not going anywhere. There is nothing you can do about it. You can talk about your ideal RPG situation all you want, but it doesn't change how these games are made.

But since we have these mandatory characters, some of them should be LGBT.



I don't mind mandatory characters as long as I can leave them at base if I don't care for them. I thought they were presented in a decent fashion in DAI. Because Cassandra, Solas, and Varric were all there before you joined, it just seemed natural that they stay. This is different from meeting some random person, having them say, "I'm tagging along!" and having no option to refuse. We still had the option to refuse everyone else. That's not nothing; those are still choices.



I agree! It IS depressing that it's a thing that happens and that those same players feel the need to gleefully brag about it on the forums.

In real life, though.

I finally caught up...a lot has happened. I missed so much. Potato hate. Some potato love. Drama. Interesting discussions. Lots of lovely posts. I even missed nickclark89's accidental porn post.  If only I'd lurked like a good boy. :smh:

Honestly? Because one my greatest strengths is also one of my greatest weaknesses; more often than not, I am a stubborn, argumentative contrarian . I'm not as bad as I used to be and trying to improve, but it's still there. Along with standing up for something I believe in, there's the slim hope that I can convince someone, anyone to give my point of view a chance. Especially if it's a lost cause.

In retrospect, I realize part of the problem here is that I didn't clarify a few things. Just because I oppose mandatory characters in general, does NOT mean I think the PC should be able to murder everyone at random. Far too many people were focusing on the kill option, rather than simply being able to part ways (seek other friends or lovers, fire them or quit, etcetera...)with Companions. Also, I reject the notion that Companions' lives must begin and end with the PC's involvement. Having friendship and  influence is one thing, but it makes them spineless and incompetent if they can't get anything done without the Hero. A character's life improves or worsens based on the PC's actions? Great! That same character stays in a tavern and doesn't do anything just because you never recruited them? HELL NO!



Probably more than anything else, the "spin" is because of comments like this:





I have never argued against inclusion and diversity; the more interesting and complex LBGTQ characters, the better. Yet because I disagree on a few particulars, all my arguments are strawmanned and my positions Godwinned. I guess all the times I praised Dorian's growth, or supported Maevaris Tilani (a transwoman) over Calpernia (a currently straight cis woman) as a Dragon Age 4 Mage Companion were just flukes .

 Also, this idea that just because you to occasionally play the story of a villain obviously means you have real life sociopathic tendencies, would be freaking hilarious, if it already wasn't pathetic. I don't want evil RP options just for the lulz, I actually WANT to see my character hated, and actually have to deal with the consequences. I WANT to work harder and find alternate solutions when I don't have the same allies and resources. If all I were really interested in was to be a Villain Sue, I'd just play any Grand Theft Auto game. Consequently, I ALSO want to roleplay pure heroes, antiheroes, tricksters, commoners in way over their heads, and everything in between. But because I'm interested in one or two evil and/or ruthlessly pragmatic runs, that somehow makes me a bigoted psycho. God, it's like I'm back in high school .

Look, I'm a big boy, and at the end of the day I'm not going to get that upset over a damn video game. It just gets a little annoying and tiresome when some accuses me of something so far removed from my actual statements, they may as well not be addressing me at all.
