Then, you made it about how I might agree with you, bringing it back to your issue with us and this thread. This was despite my advice having nothing to do with whether you should ask us or not. I don't think you should necessarily avoid asking us, but I gave you alternative routes so you can do something you're more comfortable with. So I'll ask you again, do you actually want advice? Steelcan and anyone else who is confused: Some LGBT people are totally cool with answering questions and educating people. Some aren't. This thread has a mix of both kinds. If you ask a personal question that relates to the life experience of LGBT people in a place that isn't specifically set up for that (such as this thread, which is about discussing video game romance-- with an incidental lean toward frustrated LGBT people commiserating with eachother and their allies), you have to expect to get mixed reactions. That's... that's just how people work. Some of us will be cool and nice and answer you as helpfully as we can, and some of us are going to be tired and frustrated with having to explain basic LGBT terminology that is easily google-able. And some people (like me, for instance) will feel differently on different days depending on our current level of stamina and/or patience and/or emotional fortitude. But it's never an LGBT person's responsibility to explain/educate someone with a question, even if that question is asked very nicely. I hope that explains a little bit and helps you understand why you got the reception you did today.

ALSO, one more thing, in regards to the apparent disconnect between what I'm saying now, and the idea that asking LGBT people about their experiences is important for writing about LGBT people in an authentic way-- one of the BIG differences there is this: If I have a straight friend with a question about my bisexual trans experiences, I will answer them based on whether or not I have the energy/desire to do so. Cool? cool. If I have a straight friend (or there's a straight writer for a video game dev studio, for example) who wants some beta reading or wants my extended input on a queer character/story they want to write, I will answer all their questions happily because they are probably paying me to be a consultant (if it's a close friend, I'll do it for cookies and a credit, if it's a big game studio, I'll do it for $20/hr-- hey I live in California. Cost of living here ain't cheap).  That said, my services are available and affordable should anyone at Bioware happen to be lurking in this thread and need help writing a bisexual or a trans guy. Edit: Apologies for the double-post. Apparently I'm talkative tonight. |
