Now this Starkey guy says he's "trying to grab an official statement" about Jaal:
He's also followed my Mac Walters and Aaryn Flynn on Twitter, if that's relevant.

Excuse me, I've got to go take some Alieve. I officially have a headache for real and I can't take ibuprofen. You guys aren't giving me the headache. That marketing, that conflicting info though...

The fact that Vetra was originally going to be straight and only became bi because Sheryl Chee fought for it should have been a giant red flag

Good, God! Can someone from the Dragon Age writing team go over to the Mass Effect team and give them a crash course on writing LGBT characters?! Hell, send me over there to do it.

I was about to post stuff about this: (in spoilers because some HZD stuff too)
Compare and contrast:
So this just shows how different the DA and ME team are right, because there's no way the people who wrote Krem also wrote this character. At the same time, I saw plenty of criticism about the way he was basically a tool for exposition. "Hello, I'm Krem, yes, I'm trans, this is what trans means, some people don't like trans people, are you one of them?" Obviously I'm paraphrasing. Gaider went on to say that they wouldn't do it in the same way if they had to do it over. It's very difficult, because obviously representation matters, and it was great to have Krem there. This was the first time they've tried this (excluding Serendipity, and of course Mae is only in the comics so far), and to their credit they did ask trans people for advice before hand. But again we have a trans character, rather than a character who just happens to be trans. I admit I don't envy the writers who do want to get this all right. It's difficult.

I don't think I've seen so many posters cuss before. It's an interesting moment of unity. I don't much appreciate their marketing style of "Lets not say anything and make everybody angry" as if no matter what they do they will still get sales. ME3 was a serious miss in terms of fan support, to follow that up with a marketing campaign that is basically "Our game is great, let us not tell you anything of substance about anything that isn't combat" was stupid. Now it turns out that they may have deliberately cut gay men out of the squadmate romances to attract bro gamers(based on the previous leaks that have now been confirmed as correct including straight Jaal) well.........I'm pretty pissed to be honest especially seeing as I can't imagine that the idea of reducing the presence of M/M content came from the office in charge of the game, it either came from EA..........or more likely the upper management of Bioware which means Dragon Age without Mr. Gaider could be an even bigger disappointment.

It seems like romance disappointment is a bit more universal. My best friend (straight guy) has decided to be celibate in MEA. The process was as follows: Cora: "tries too hard" "Can I talk to the manager haircut" Peebee: the only response I got from him was "not going to happen" Vetra: "I don't feel safe"Keri: "Wank, fake British accent" Avela: "that's it I'm going to celibate" That's the excuse I was constantly getting when I asked guys why in the hell they didn't romance Cassandra. She was "too much" for them, or my favorite; "I wouldn't be doing her, she'd be doing me." Despite her whole entire personality being a hopeless romantic and so girly these guys literally took a look at her and just said nope. It sucks because gay Ryders do not have this option to be oh-so picky. They're stuck with what they have and are forced to compromise with that whereas the straight men can hate on someone for their haircut and choose from a variety of options. What's even more frustrating is at the end of the day, they'll be the ones to have their voice heard. Bioware will most likely add more attractive looking options for the straight males in the next game while everyone else is paid dust. Oh no it wasn't about personality it was about the "spiky bits poking out of her head"

Oh look, Gil and Suvi don't even have pictures in the Prima Guide. Lovely. I guess I'll just add this to my list of "things that don't exactly fill me with confidence that the crew options are as important as the squad" And can someone explain the difference between "Culminates in unique friendship, opening unique content, with additional option for exclusivity" and "Culminates in exclusive romance", please? My guess is the former are ones that can be casual or allow you to romance other people or become exclusive whereas the latter is you can only romance them. Could be, but that seems odd since there are so many with that description, including Gil, who you can have a baby with. I'm gonna guess teh gays™ will get the fade to black treatment here my friend. Cos, reasons, can't have a love scene cos, reasons. Very likely. *sigh* But with MEA we're almost back to ME2 levels of endless tits and ass for straight men, while everyone else is an afterthought. For sure, f/f players are only lucking out because a) asari (who were created as a male wet dream); token full lesbian check box; c) because one writer pushed really fucking hard for it. I can't possibly agree with this more. As usual, I feel like lesbians (in ME) get decent selection for the wrong reasons. At least, partly. Sheryl pushing for it seemed genuine, if true. I don't think I've seen so many posters cuss before. It's an interesting moment of unity. I dropped my first F-bomb here today. I like to save them for special occasions. This qualified Been trying to keep up with this thread, but there's so much going on. I just wanted to say that although I'm still extremely!! salty!! and deeply disappointed that ME:A has driven so many people away (lol can't even be happy about mai waifu, I'm too damn sad and disgusted on behalf of everyone else, FFS Bioware)I know the feeling. It's hard to feel happy about your options knowing others continue to be left out. I better not have gone on an epic rant for nothing. Even if I did enjoy it. Ha, me too. What if the trigger for a Jaal romance is naming your Ryder 'Sara', no matter the gender. Then the guide would be right, and the people saying it was super hard to romance him would also be right because they picked names other than Sara I've continued to half-jokingly say that if you name your Scott "Sara" or vice versa, the appropriate named lines should still trigger. I mean, you can name them that, so why not use the audio? That's it. I've decided that once most folks are in bed, I'm going to sit near my laptop and fire up ME1. I really need to shoot some damn geth in the head right about now. I know what you mean, I feel like doing this: ...Speaking of which, any news on that elusive Sara trailer? You know, I had a thought on that yesterday. In addition to the normal reasons I want equal marketing, I remembered that Bioware is making the twins different and are proud of it. So... if they're different characters, why keep showing the same one in trailers? Doesn't make much sense. What else is new? The pattern has repeated itself more times than you can fathom. Gay players' hopes rise, evolve, advance, and at the apex of their glory they are extinguished. To be perfectly honest, considering our current discussion about Bioware and LGBT representation, I'm scared to know more. Also, inb4 they mess up their lore concerning medical science.

I'm just going to stick to my first ever playthrough of Dragon Age Origins.
Too much pain, hurt and confusion for MEA right now.
Thank god though this experience hasn't tainted my opinions of the original trilogy.
Still my fave games ever.
Andromeda is like the Star Wars prequels I pretend don't exist.

What a joke this is.
'Don't give us false hope. Why in God's name are you leading us on, only to disappoint us as we know you will. AGAIN?!'
That's what we said, again and again and again. No false hope we said, anything but that. If you have bad news, then just TELL US! We said it - look, its right there on all the earlier pages. And what happens?
Cora - Straight, Liam -Straight. Jaal - straight.
Thank you Bioware. Thank you so much for caring. It gets me right here...

I think Cathleen Rootsaert (spelling?) but thought she didn't have twitter Yeah, seems like she doesn't. So I can't who confirmed Jaal being bi, but it was someone from the official (is it how you call these acc in English?) twitter of someone. And this person apologized. Saying official would imply it was someone from Bioware or EA. If you wanted to say an official Twitter of something else you'd say for example (say it's IGN): IGN's twitter IGN's official twitter The official twitter of IGN Of course context matters too. If the conversation was about IGN, saying the official twitter would mean IGN. From your quote here it looks like you mean someone from Bioware or EA said it. I hope that helps?

He claims to have flirted with Jaal quite a bit. So clearly the option to do so did appear in his game???
Someone needs to ask him for a screenshot of the flirt option or something.

I'm not ignoring it, I'm pointing out that it's a problem. The sexualization of Dormer in marketing is one piece of a larger issue that many of us in the forums have been decrying. It, that being, overt heteronormalization has left many of us feeling isolated I.E. the absence of Gil in marketing. Anthony is also an attractive actor who played a beloved character in a popular series. Why is it that he had absolutely no video interviews promoting his character who is actually a romance option? Perhaps another casualty was the promise to utilize Sara equally in marketing but instead we receive an abundance of Scott 'finding out for himself' with Cora and Peebee while ignoring that most of the main cast is gay or bisexual. Banking in on Dormer's appeal thrice while ignoring Anthony completely enforces the very corrosive idea that hetero male sexuality is 'normal' and everything else must submit to it or be pushed aside. This idea manifests itself in a variety of ways and in different intensities. Like here in the forums where Dormer, an attractive actress, was auto assumed to have a romance role. Sexy Doctor trope anyone? For this reason I am pleased that Bioware decided to go in a different direction and hope that those of you who admire Dormer would come to appreciate her talents and Lexi in a non sexual capacity. Yeah we're not going down this road. Banking on Natalie Dormer's sex appeal has nothing to do with BioWare's shortcomings on the LGBT front. Neither does Gethin Anthony's lack of videos actually. Care to compare his IMDB page to hers? Dormer's clearly the bigger star. I think they both did a fine job in GoT so I'm not comparing acting ability but star power, reach (I had to google him just now, to learn his name) and yes, sex appeal are not even in the same ballpark. So she got videos, he didn't. And looking at his credits he's been branching out into video games more than she has and has already worked with BioWare in the past on DAI. So I'm fairly confident he was a "normal" hire (though telling people you've got two GoT actors in your game is better than one), while Dormer was clearly a high profile, for visibility hire. One of the videos say BioWare approached her, not the other way around. I'd be curious if Anthony says the same for MEA or DAI. Regardless, this isn't something to add to your agenda, such as it may be. Sex sells and it ain't a hetero/homo thing. The lack of marketing for gay people doesn't change that as I'm sure if/when they put out ads for gay people, they don't feature homely motherfuckers. BioWare paid top dollar for a currently very successful symbol of that and failed to maximize their purchase. That is flat out idiotic and irredeemable. And people who were expecting the full treatment, got shafted and are or will be quite annoyed. People who, I'm sure are not made up solely of straight people. As an asari character, there was a reasonable expectation that she'd be bi and I'm sure Dormer has her share of bi or lesbian fans; thus some fraction of those fans got screwed too. Will your rub salt in their wounds as well? I feel for you if you're unhappy with whatever aspect of BioWare's lacking LGBT content affects you the most. I sincerely wish you'd get what you want. I would not say, "you know what, maybe Gil shouldn't be a romance so you can admire Gethin Anthony's talents and Gil in a non sexual capacity". Seems rather cruel, doesn't it? This is wrong. Sexualization and heteronormity are inextricable. That we are now discovering that m/f romances were heavily favored AND m/m content was shafted and lacking are not coincidences.
