if the game advertises the protagonist with a unique appearance, I cannot customize it. Well, Mass Effect 1 and 2 advertised some bloke in N7 armour with a default appearance; but since everyone knows that Shepard is a woman, the true protagonist's appearance is completely up to the player

How can you people look at Shepard if s/he isn't default. I used custom Separd once, won't make that mistake again I've never used either default, Sheploo has always looked too much like a supermodel for my tastes. Besides, I like making a character my own. My Male Shepard had the Sheploo face. No matter how many times I made a custom face for him, it didn't work out. The faces never looked right. They were not "Shepard." The voice didn't seem to fit the other faces either, and in my opinion, that goes for every custom male face (Sorry to those who created custom male faces). But now Male Shepard, default or not, is a thing of the past for me. FemShep is the other way around. Almost every custom face works perfectly, and not the default. Picture for the day:

When I first played the series back in 2010, it was with ME2. Most of the videos I've seen was with the default, and I was in a rush when I started the game. That was a long time ago. It's in the past. It's just my FemShep now. Who would have thought that I would have a much better time playing the Trilogy with a FemShep, than with my first Shepard?

Ah well, if you'd already experienced the default then it makes more sense that he's the natural fit for you. I think the only thing I'd ever seen of Sheploo when I started ME1 was this - Not a good start. I understand preferring femshep, many do including me. I love her voice acting and I think they portrayed the 'badass woman soldier' type very very well.

I understand preferring femshep, many do including me. I love her voice acting and I think they portrayed the 'badass woman soldier' type very very well. Story Time! Well, it wasn't easy at first. I created Quorra twice. The first time started out well (even though I didn't start her with ME1 cuz I was too damn lazy), then it all went crashing down. In the panic, I deleted her, because I only want one Shepard (I still do), and like an idiot I kept the first. After switching to the PS3, then back to PC, it was 3 years since I last played Mass Effect with my first Shepard. I really didn't want to go back and do the same thing. So I tried to do some changes, like a different class, and love interest. Then something hit me like a Krogan headbutt! I watched a video for the Citadel DLC involving a romantic moment between FemShep and Garrus (the tango). I wanted that! It made sense. That Romance subplot is so genuine! So, I restarted ME1, recreated Quorra's face (I did this by looking at very low-res pictures of the first Quorra, a MIRACLE!), and continued from there. Then I got rid of the other Shepard, name Quorra my official "Canon," and the rest is what you see now(and was just last year). I've come a long way since 2010.

Picture for the day:For me, the problem starts with the CC in ME1. It's hard to come up with anything that isn't ugly. Therefore, I go with default FemShep. Then in ME2, you're basically trapped by what you did in ME1. At very least, you need to go with the same hair style and hair color. Before you know it, you end up with something strangely close to default. Oh well... DA is better for customization in DAO and DAI. DA2 is like ME; I feel compelled to go with the iconic default.

deadlydwarf Granted, I never created my FemShep in ME1, until last year, and I was using old pictures of her from ME2 and 3 to create her face again, this time in an much older game. At first, I was worried that some of the features (like the nose, mouth, eyes, jaw, etc.) didn't look right, but in the end it turned out better. The Quorra 2.0 look was as close as i could get to the original, and it grew on me somewhat quickly, and I can't find it in my heart to change any features. If I changed her nose, eyes, makeup, mouth, facial structure, etc., it wouldn't really be her face anymore. The only thing I changed was her hair style for ME3. Not only did I do because of the fact that her original hair didn't look right in ME3, but i wanted to give her a hairstyle for story purposes (some characters have a hairstyle change in a series of movies, like Star Wars, or Harry Potter), as if she cut her hair sometime before the events of ME3. Her look is her own, in all three games. I even created that image of her in all three in a previous post, like so: I even went as far as backing up her character profile for each game. She's an Earthborn, War Hero, and a Vanguard. She's mostly Paragon, mostly...

My sole complete trilogy Shepard, Moya (or, as she is more commonly referred to, 'Commander Stupidface'). She started out not half-bad in ME1, probably because I started with some solid sliders as my base. Importing to ME2 was a disaster, though, and nothing I did made it any better. Importing to ME3 was the delicious icing on the ugly cake. *chortle* I am seriously in awe of anyone who can make anything other than a vomit-inducing mess in a Bioware chargen . *genuflects*

The thing about ME3 is that the game's graphics engine seems so different that I think one has to accept that one's Shepard will not look exactly the same. It's just a matter of convincing oneself that "different" does not mean "bad".

My Hawkes are all totally unremarkable, since I always use the default Maria n with very very tiny adjustments. (Better safe than sorry.) And my avatar is one of my Wardens from Dragon Age: Origins, Moira Cousland.

To be fair, Sheploo is a supermodel. Underwear model, even, which is also true of Scott Ryder's face model. Kaidan? Model. Still, it's odd that Ash and Liara got face models but not FemShep. That said, I have always been terrible at character creation. It's one of the major reasons I tend to go with default looks so I always pray they're easy on the eyes. lol

I've never used default faces for any game you can customize your character, but mainly because I love messing around in CCs, even the not so great ones lol I do like the default faces for Shepard (even if femshep didn't get a facemodel). I don't have any pictures of my Shepard from the first two games because I played them on the ps3, but here's a couple from me3 (obviously some modding happened, couldn't resist): I might tweak her some more in future PTs but I do like how she looks.

Spent a couple of hours yesterday trying to re-invent my canon femShep, looking online for inspiration and trying crazy face shapes. I want her to look significantly different to Amy (that I shared in the OP) but sheesh it's difficult.

To be truly different though (and assuming you have the artistic ability to get the most out of CCs), you could always use yourself as a model or perhaps a good friend. And if you use a friend as a model, you should find some way of showing her your femShep and see if she notices the resemblance!

I have several Shepards, but these are my favorites. Two male Shepards and one female.
The first one is right at the start, the second can be seen at 1:18, and the last at 3:16.
Please let me know if you can't see it.
