it's really not. Especially for the games industry. If this were a movie I'd agree. But since it's not... Umm, most games I've played have been way more open about story and mechanics than MEA has been. In fact, I just cited the very game they say they based the marketing strategy on, which, unusually, kept a lid on the game's production until just a few months before release. And Bioware has been even more secretive than they were. Why? Why? Because the nature of marketing for video games is changing. And its not just BioWare who is doing it, and Fall Out 4 was the tent pole for this. Yes, sure, it had 'more' marketing before ME A did but it was the first game that started to set the new trend we are seeing. Whereas two games that are coming out seem to be following this new approach, and one that has already been released, as far as I know, and we are talking major Tripple A productions. A. I read an article awhile back that said the gaming industry, and the consumers there of, are becoming more and more leary of big 'convention' type shows. Because they do not trust that companies are showing us accurate information anymore *coughUbisoftcough*, so people are becoming less and less trusting of things like E3 because game comanies just go out of their way to pretty up the game, and then for one reason or another, the final product does not much what we see in terms of graphical fidelity...gamers feel ripped off...hurt feelings ensue, and the industry as a whole is not trusted. B. That being said everything...everything...about a marketing campaign costs money in fact everything a game company does in relation to any particular video game costs money. And guess what? These shows cost money. Going to them, getting a spot, setting up equipment, producing your trailer, competing with the other companies who are still under the belief that these things are still worth going to. And since these shows are not worth going to it costs a lot less money, and is probably way more effective to just launch internal videos when they are good and ready to launch them. C. The reaction to the Crestwood video has shown, to be blunt, that BioWare can't even neccessarily trust its own 'fan base', because it was very clear that it was not a finished product, very clear that things were changing, and it wasn't even supposed to be public knowledge in the first place. It was a show to show certain industry types and people who care about such things what BioWare was intending to do...people flipped out over it and is showing it like 'shun shun, shame on you BioWare'. Which then just erodes the trust about these big game shows and productions *see point A* further, and has shown BioWare that they better damn well be certain of what they are going to show will actually be in the game or else you will have a figurative lynch mob after your arse, and you better damn well be sure that you actually know, as a dev going to one of these things, what you are talking about to avoid confusion. The only way to do that is to show gameplay video as close to launch as possible. Its not really a lack of confidence in the product, its an acknowledgement that this thing is being tweaked right up until they take it out of their cold dead hands....Ian has said so himself. (Or was it Gamble?) D. The rise of Letsplayers and Youtube personalities and Twitch Streamers who get video game copies from publishers they then play for the audience to market the game is so much more cheaper and a much more effective way to market a game considering I don't think many people will even buy a video game these days until they see it from their favorite youtube celebrity no matter what BioWare shows. And E, now this part is more supposition on my part then fact, but I suspect the games industry might be moving away from a pre order model to a lets just get copies of the game sold when we can get it sold. In short though, threads like this are starting to wear really, really, thin.

Apart from the trailer that gives us a glimpse of the skills setup , EA seems to be gun-shy about spending more money for ads on the more intricate customization mechanics of the game. This leads me to believe those particular systems are still being ironed out. If they are "ready" then we'll likely see a few patches right out of the gate at launch. My guess is that early complaints about the facial features and body proportions of some characters have something to do with this.

Nothing is getting ironed out at this stage, only bug fixing. Game is going gold within 2 weeks. What EA's doing makes me think there's simple very little customization and they're afraid to show it. Prove me wrong.

Prove me wrong. Are you asking me to prove you wrong or was that a statement to the developers? In any case, those bug fixes may very well deal with the features we're discussing and will require patching at launch, which may be why they haven't bothered to release any footage of it. Or you might be right and there just isn't anything to see that differs that greatly from older titles. Good luck getting any real verification on that front though. If EA and BioWare have shown us anything (very little, obviously) in regards to Andromeda it's that they're ultra weary about what and how much they're willing to show us. I simply choose to believe they're doing their utmost to not have to release a truckload of patches. I get it, we all want more game footage, and we want it now, but i'd rather not suffer through another Destiny-like debacle if I can avoid it.

How about a Youtube video? A blog post? Something that tells us what we're getting besides "#SPACE!" Now I get that it was unfortunate that this happened. That looked like a truly amazing part of the game and it's a shame it got cut. But still, that was a side quest. We don't even know the basics of this game. Story or mechanics. Sadly, that time has not yet come. What gets me are developers who no longer have a solid reputation basically saying "Trust us, THIS time it'll be awesome" like we have attention spans of flashbulbs.

In terms of your answer to A and B, they have been doing that. They have been doing it over and over and over again releasing video after video after video and showing interview after interview and interview. In the recent weeks, I covered that already in this thread. I am sorry that you are not personally satisfied and I am sorry you do not like their marketing campaign to this point, but they have been doing it. Now you can disagree with what they are showing, you can dislike it, you can even wish for more, but to pretend that they have not been doing exactly what you are saying when they have been doing it seems a little silly to me. And they are doing it with greater and greater frequency the closer we get to launch to where again it just seems to me the people who are complaining about BioWare not marketing their game just don't seem to be paying attention.

I don't think a video highlighting the hair is likely to be a sensible choice to sell the game.

Bioware isn't as confident with their product as Bethesda was with fallout 4. Hence the lack of gameplay videos. Maybe Bethesda shouldn't have been so confident or fallout 4 wouldn't have been as bad.

34 days until launch (and the 10 hour trial comes out 5 days earlier I think) so I really hope BioWare begins to explain game mechanics in the manner you stated. I'd be satisfied with...
-How crafting works. -An accurate example of how all the dialogue wheel choices can affect a situation. -Scanning/Mining/General Exploration gameplay (we've seen a tiny bit of this). -Character Creator please. -Scott/Sara personalities explained, and how much/if that will impact the game. -How colonies/outposts work (they have promised an AI video on this). -Last squad Bios (We will atleast definitely see these). -An introduction to the support staff on the Tempest (like when they introduced us to Leliana/Cullen/Josephine in DA:3 while also selecting multiple dialogue options in order to show off tones). -One more cinematic trailer (with Sara this preferably).

Bioware wants to market more like Fallout 4. I get it. THis was shown FOUR MONTHS BEFORE RELEASE: Edit; my mistake FIVE MONTHS Off topic but the Bethesda/Zenimax Studios Building is so awesome up in Rockville, MD. They had a life size Vertibird and Brotherhood of Steel Power Armor in their lobby when I stopped by there. One of the employees has a fully decked out Vault Tec green Jeep with the Vault tec Mascot on it.
