I'm going to post later, but I need to get this out of the way. First things first, I'm sorry If I came across as overly blunt Obsidian Gryphon I was on my phone and couldn't really get my point across. Second: Ine thing that we need to watch out for is to controlling other people's characters without permission or "Godmodding". ONLY take control of another characters if you have permission from the person. Since it's the tutorial, I'm going to let it slide but next time please only have your character react to things while adding your own. It's not about "letting it slide," it's about recognizing that people who are new to RP don't understand all the rules. If you have tons of experience with this, then it falls on you to be the teacher here...and if you want people to stick around, then you need to be a patient one. No need to make people delete posts, nor is there any need to go to the other extreme and ignore mistakes. Just let people know what they did wrong and ask them to please edit the mistake from their posts.  |

I seem to have started this kerfuffle with my post, so my most sincere apologies. I assumed that both mages would have staffs, which is evidently wrong. I'm changing my post to reflect one staff. So no trophy stick for Enathaya.

It's considered railroading if you write for someone else's character. An NPC like the tavern keeper is a neutral party and unless there was a specific plan for what they do (which should be mentioned right from the start), others are free to use said NPC for actions as mentioned. Paying for someone else's meal before another person can is not railroading and does not need to be changed. If you're headed to a huge distance away, some discussion can be done to check to make sure of how others will react. Sometimes it can get messy, like for example, if one person doesn't want the group to split up in a haunted mansion, it's awkward when two decide to go off into another room because naturally, the first one would be keeping a sharp eye and would protest their leaving. However, if your characters are acting of their own free will with no reference as to what the others are doing, you're not breaking any rules. *snickers*  |

Thanks for the explanation and the magnanimous answer in letting my error slide but there's not going to be any "godmodding" from my end. I have said I'm relinquishing any claim to the tavern keeper. The char is yours to dictate / destroy. I thank you for this "enriching" lesson and sincerely regret I'm unable to participate. I'm not going to pick or whatever because I honestly have a problem with your post / repy but I'm going to stop the ping pongs here. The matter is ended. I wanted to because I was feeling annoyed / exasperated / put off with the tone in the PMs. Those two PMs were the first thing I saw when I dropped into the forum. The entire railroad line lit the red button, so did the godmodding flag he just waved. I'd more amiable to polite corrections like (if he had used them) ; the post was great but I'd like to point out that chars other than your own cannot be moved or spoken for. Cite example; moving them to a table at the back of the tavern, is a no no. It doesn't matter if the char has just a paragraph, it's vital that actions / reactions / words are focused solely on your char. That is an important point in RP. I'm just answering Opuspace's post btw, to clarify the misconception that I was asked to delete. *end matter* |

If someone does something wrong, just tell them nicely and it can be edited in the post. Usually in any fantasy setting a Staff, a Tome, a Wand, a Ring, a Sword, an Amulet etc. are used as Foci (focus) in order to help a mage/wizard/witch use their magic more effectively. Overall, I'd say that in most settings using a focus is more of an upgrade than an absolute requirement.
The only setting I remember right now where Foci are crucial for the casting of magic is Harry Potter, and even in this setting some characters are known for doing some magic without a wand. (so in short, not impossible)
Yeah, that was basically the point. It's not canon-breaking to not use a staff in DA.
