(OOC: Located in a forest near Amaranthine. Some music!: Adeline walked in the through the forest clutching her staff: Dreamcatcher. As she walked she listened to the birds singing and observed a deer playing with her young. Adeline smiled at the lush green trees in where the birds are building their nest in preparation for mating and laying their eggs she enjoyed the feeling of the grass tickling her bare feet. It felt good to be free from the Circle Adeline could never experience the tranquility of the forest when she was back at Kaldan Hold. Still while she would rather bask in the forest's beauty, Adeline unfortunately had things to do. She ran out of money and supplies yesterday and she needed to get a job, Amaranthine was near and is a great place to look for work. Still while the Mage-Templar war is over and mages were granted their freedom, not everyone accepted the mages. There were still extremist fringes who would harass or kill mages and villages who would reject them. Adeline was glad that the mages were granted their freedom, but the hard work was just beginning. Adeline heard the crashing of water and began to go to the source of it. She felt thirsty and Amaranthine is about 30 minutes away, all of a sudden she heard a noise a foot stepping on a stick. Gripping Dreamcatcher Adeline cautiously moved to the source of the noise, It was there that she found Templars: About 4 of them presumably walking towards the water source as well. They were sporting the typical Templar armor, but it looked rusted as though they have not been maintained for weeks. Adeline heart was racing, she has been dodging Templars for years and she could tell that these are NOT the Templars sanctioned by the Chantry. They were Rogue Templars. Adeline dashed towards the nearest tree, trying to remain hidden but listening on to their conversation. "How long till the next city?" One of the Templars complained. "In about half an hour" the other replied. "Can't wait to get the brothel. Burning witches can be hard work!" "And hangin mages as well!" The third laughed "Blood mages squeal like little girls when the hang!" "We're doin the Chantries work here!" the fourth nodded "Divine Victoria has taken a soft stance on mages especially those who practice Blood Magic!" "Agreed." The first one said "We goin to join the Templar rebellion at Orlais afterwards, but we're goin to need money, there's a job at Amaranthine that requires people to deal with Pirates!" A job? Well that's one city Adeline will have to avoid. "Yeah Orlais! Didn't the rogue Templar deal with a Templar whose be hangin with the Dalish knife ears?" "So I have heard." The second Templar looked nervous, his dark face was sweaty. "About the Pirates, I heard they had Giant Squid with em a Krakken!" "Sounds like bullshit stories to me, but they pay very well if we can deal them!" A Giant Squid? Adeline raised an eyebrow, sounds like a job for a mage not Templars. All of a sudden the first Templar froze in place as though he saw something horrible. "Hey boys, looks we got ourselves a mage! Let's go and "talk" to her!" The other Templars were confused at first, but eventually saw what he saw and laughed. A mage is in trouble! Adeline began running towards their direction in an effort to protect her. EnathayaCity Elf Apostate Mage bsn.boards.net/post/302581/threadEnathaya crouched absolutely still on the bank of the stream, eyes narrowed as she watched fish moving swiftly with the dancing current. It had been weeks since she'd left Kirkwall to seek out a clan of Dalish that, rumor had it, had lost their First through mysterious circumstances. She should have been more curious about what had happened, but she had given little energy to speculation and instead could focus on only one thing: that clan was short one mage. Well, she was an elven mage. She was sick of running from one alienage to another, constantly putting her family in danger as they fled discovery. Ten years it had been, now, since her magic had manifested...and just a few months since the demon had started whispering to her in her dreams. She needed training, and she needed answers...and she would not get either in Kirkwall's alienage, where despite rumors of recent reforms by the new Divine, prejudice against mages still ran high, and hatred for elves ran even higher. Or so it had felt to her. So she had slipped out of bed one night with pack in hand, bidding goodbye to her sleeping family and trying to memorize what they looked like in case she never saw them again. She slapped her own cheek lightly, trying to keep herself awake. She was exhausted. She'd been travelling nights and sleeping in trees by day, trying to stay out of sight. But she'd grown up in cities all her life, and hunting for food even in broad daylight was a skill that eluded her, to say nothing of hunting at night. She'd finally woken in late morning, only a few hours after going to sleep, feeling so hungry that she decided to risk leaving the tree to find food. She'd looked around at the vegetation first, but the memory of the berries that had made her extremely ill only a few days before turned her stomach. She didn't know what was safe, and getting that sick again would incapacitate her. Fish it would have to be. She would catch one with the help of her magic, and then find somewhere she could start a small fire to cook it. She knew she risked discovery doing so, but she too would risk discovery if she became too weak to keep travelling. And so she found herself with her knees in the mud, her hand hovering over the clear water as she waited for a fish to swim beneath it. She had an ice spell ready--a small one, or so she planned. Her magic was extremely unpredictable, especially when she was distracted by fear or physical discomfort. Or both. When her patience was rewarded by a small silvery fish pausing under the shade of her hand, she let the spell loose. But instead of a small patch of ice encasing the fish for easy recovery, the entire bank froze with a loud snap. The fish was definitely trapped...and now she had no way of retrieving it. She cursed. She couldn't melt the bank herself, not safely. If her ice spells were unpredictable, at least she could produce some when she needed to. But she'd never been able to reliably produce fire. She pounded the dirt with her fist in frustration. She could start a fire the normal way, but she had no way to direct it toward the ice to melt it where she needed to. No, it just wasn't feasible. She would need to look elsewhere for something to eat. She clambered up the tree to grab her pack, and had set one foot back on the riverbank when... Shouts. Human men. They'd found her. She ran. Deeper into the forest, where she hoped she could lose them. She scanned ahead of her, looking for a tree sturdy enough to climb. A tree not situated right beside the evidence of her magic. "Stop your scurrying, wench!" yelled a deep voice. More voices howled with laughter. She whimpered. None of these trees would hide her -- they were too bare -- but there was one up ahead that looked both lush and sturdy. If she could just make it... She reached out and within, to that place where magic seemed to reside both in her and around her, and tugged. Time seemed to slow around her, falling leaves hovering in midair as she sprinted for the tree. She tugged herself onto the first branch she could reach, only to nearly fall as time snapped back to speed. Not long enough. The spell had come -- the spell that helped her escape pickpockets and the same spell that helped her win races against her older brothers -- but it had not lasted long enough. She climbed as fast as she could, but she knew the men had seen her climb this tree. Frantically, she set an ice mine at the base of the trunk, with only a thin hope that it would be strong enough to incapacitate them. It wasn't. The first man to reach the tree triggered her trap and shivered as a chill ran through him. He howled with rage and began to climb the tree after her. She turned and climbed higher, until she could go no further. She doubted she was high enough to hinder them. She pulled one of her knives and began wildly shooting rays of ice at the men with her other hand, but she knew it would never be enough. She was surrounded. ---- tagging smilesja again, until these two join up...right?

Still keeping her distance, Adeline chased after the Templars while running Adeline caught a glimpse of the person they were chasing. It was a small scrawny looking elf with short brown hair. Adeline couldn't see her face though, the Elf eventually ran to a tree and climbed as high she could. One of the Templars, went after her, only to be hit with an ice trap she set up. It wasn't very effective and it only enraged the Templar who tried to climb higher. Adeline watched in a mix of horror and anger as icicles came flying out wildly. The Elf surrounded and was seconds away from being murdered. Adeline gripped Dreamcatcher and came out of hiding. "Leave the girl alone!" She shouted. The Templars turned around and saw Adeline who had Dreamcatcher at the ready. "Another mage huh?" The Templar who was chasing the Elf up a tree spat. "We don't need to descend to violence." Adeline said with desperation in her voice "Please leave now leave the girl be. She's frightened." "She's practicing Blood Magic" The second Templar said "You know the magic that attracts demons witch." "Oh come on we both know that's not true." Adeline retorted "We're free, we're no longer have to live in fear any longer! Now I'm giving you this chance to leave now!" The Templars disagreed and began to surround Adeline. "Kill this bitch." One of the said "and after that we'll deal with the knife-ear." Sighing Adeline immediately summoned a Stonefist aiming at the Templar to her left. The fade summoned fist smashed against the Templars breastplate knocking him a good 4 feet back to where he smashed his head against a tree, breaking his neck in the process. Adeline then used Winter's grasp on the Templar to her right, freezeing him right before he was about to her. Adeline then barely had time to block attacks with her staff by the Templar who climbed the tree after the Elf. She blocked and parried every incoming attack from his longsword, until she found an opening and whacked him in the head. As he went down, Adeline summoned a small fireball and hurled it at towards the fourth Templar, he screamed in pain but was not dead. Adeline then whirled around and sliced the Templar she hit with her staff with her blade end. Blood came out of his neck as he bled out and died. Adeline then set her sights on the last Templar. "Please, I surrender! Don't kill me! Let me go! You won't see me again!" He begged. Still angry, Adeline knelt next to the injured. "I'm giving you a chance to live. But if I catch you again, I'll kill you." The crying Templar nodded furiously and got up ran off. Getting up Adeline briefly observed the carnage she caused. Diplomacy was never a good option when it came to fighting Templars or Fanatics in her experience, but for the sake of being a good person she wanted to be merciful. Adeline doesn't like fighting, but sometimes it was necessary. Still at least the Elf is safe. Putting on a warm smile Adeline looked up to the Elf in the tree. "It's all right little one You can come down." She said softly. "You are safe, the Templars will not harm you anymore, are you hurt little one? Do you need food?" (OOC: dragontartare )

EnathayaCity Elf Apostate Mage bsn.boards.net/post/302581/threadThe Templars went down one by one, some by fire, some by ice...but they all went down, save for the last. Enathaya watched in shock as he scurried away faster than anything wearing so much armor had any right to. She looked down to see the mage smiling up at her. "Little one," she called her. Enathaya bristled at being called "little one." Yes, she was small, even for an elf, and her own brothers certainly never let her forget it. But she was most certainly not a child, and her small stature had come in handy more than once. But...now was probably not the best time for her pride to make an appearance. She was still not safe. She was still trapped in this tree, not by Templars this time, but by a woman who could probably kill her with a flick of her fingers if Enathaya made her too angry. She carefully brought up a barrier and could have cried with relief when it held, weak though it was. At least it was something. "I thank you for the rescue, Messere," she called down to the mage. She was surprised by how steady her voice was. "What do you ask of me in return?" smilesja

It was subtle but Adeline could tell that the Elf did not take it well when she called her "little one." She decided to drop it. The Elf struggled to conjure a barrier something that made Adeline raise an eyebrow. This Elf is inexperienced no doubt, she hasn't had someone to train her properly. "I thank you for the rescue, Messere," She called to Adeline "What do you ask of me in return?" Still smiling Adeline said: "I want you to get down, you look exhausted and hungry. Amaranthine is a half hour walk. We can go to the nearest tavern to buy you some food and......" Adeline crossed her arms while still smiling at the Elf. "Your magic....... I've noticed that you frozen an entire riverbank.and that ice trap looked decent, you have a lot talent. But you lack control, judging from you didn't have any training in it did you?" It was that thought that made Adeline feel sorry for the Elf (If it were true) mages were still not truly free and have to live in fear even after a reform was made. "I could help train you in how properly control your magic. I was a Circle mage years ago..... things happened that led to me escaping." Adeline tried to block out bad memories of the events of the escape. ".....and now I'm apostate like you. On the run I've also taught myself some rare magics which you saw on display. I can't abandon a fellow mage especially at the mercy of Rogue Templars, so come with me. There's a job that pays in Amaranthine, we can split the earnings and I could teach the way of the magic arts." Still smiling at the Elf Adeline remembered that she forgot to tell her name! "My name is Adeline. What's yours?" (OOC: dragontartare)

EnathayaCity Elf Apostate Mage bsn.boards.net/post/302581/threadEnathaya watched the mage with some suspicion. "I am called Enathaya," she said. She considered lying about a clan name -- it was never good to let on that one was alone in the world, that her loved ones had no idea where she was -- but even a human would note her lack of vallaslin. And lying to her might just make the woman angry. The mage had, as yet, made no move to seize her, harm her, or even touch her. Enathaya sighed. She had to be honest with herself: she really was helpless here. If the woman meant her harm, she was obviously powerful enough to do whatever she wanted to do to her. That she hadn't, suggested that she might be sincere about the job, at least, if nothing else. Either that, or she was working with another group of Templars to try to capture apostates. Enathaya had seen Templars fighting each other in Kirkwall and around the Free Marches, after all. News said it happened all over Ferelden, too. Those could have been enemy Templars that the mage killed, just to provide a distraction. And yet...Enathaya was becoming desperate, even if she hoped she did not appear so. She needed a bed...a warm pile of leaves...anything, to sleep in. A hot meal. And then, of course, there was the demon. Each night it whispered to her, a little louder, a little more insistent. She had thought a Dalish Keeper could help her. But...she had found no trace of the clan she sought, and she was running out of leads. Perhaps she would be able to get some information from this human mage, if she asked in the right way. And she did owe the woman her life. Reluctantly, she left her refuge -- or had it become a death trap? -- and faced the woman with her head held high. She thought she still barely reached the woman's chin. "Very well. I will follow you, for now, until I have repaid the debt I owe you for my life. But it is not safe to talk here. There are other men in these woods. Not all Templars, but...all the same, I have been avoiding them for days, and I would rather not risk another encounter." smilesja

The Elf named Eanthaya climbed down and head towards Adeline. "Very well. I will follow you, for now, until I have repaid the debt I owe you for my life." Enathaya said "But it is not safe to talk here. There are other men in these woods. Not all Templars, but...all the same, I have been avoiding them for days, and I would rather not risk another encounter." "Agreed." Adeline said. "I imagine it's just as dangerous for an elf as it is a mage." The two walked to the exit of the forest Adeline still had some questions for the young elven mage. "So Enathaya." She asked "Where are you from initially? What brings an Elven mage all the way to Amaranthine?" After hearing her answer Adeline decided to reveal a little bit about herself "Well as you know after escaping the Circle, I wondered around Ferelden for I'm not sure how long. I stole just so I can eat. Then I one day I reached a village that was attacked by Darkspawn. With the use of my magic I was able to fend them off and heal the wounded. The villagers pretty much elected me as their as their village witch and I watched over them for a few years." Adeline became solemn for a moment and then continued. "Then circumstances forced me to leave the village, It involved blood magic and fanaticism. I'll tell you the story some other time, but what I cans say is that I've made close friendships on my little adventure." Adeline smiled at the fact. What were friends doing now she wondered. "But Elanaya listen, if you are afraid just know that there are still good people in this world who'll accept you for who you are. I've met many great non mages in my life who influenced and helped me. I do believe a day will come when people will no longer fear mages and will accept as brother and sister." As they approached the city gates Adeline stared at Elanaya. "Well let's go to the tavern, we'll get you some food and I need to look at the message board for that Pirate job." dragontartare (OOC: After her will be mousestalker .)

EnathayaCity Elf Apostate Mage bsn.boards.net/post/302581/threadEnathaya was glad to see the forest behind them. For all that the trees had provided shelter and shade to her, they made her feel...oddly exposed. She was relieved to see buildings rising up again, people of all races bustling about, carts of goods and shouting merchants. It was almost normal. 'Looking for work,' she had told the woman simply when Adeline asked what had brought Enathaya so far from home. It was a poor lie. As if even an elf couldn't have found work of some sort in Kirkwall, with all the rebuilding still going on. Maybe not honest work, true, but still work. Enathaya was glad when Adeline had let the lie go. She really didn't want to have to explain herself yet, especially not the reason she ultimately left her family behind. Or maybe not ever. She'd heard that the Chantry's circles killed mages who spoke to demons, and while Adeline had escaped the circle (or so she claimed), there was no telling how much of their doctrine she still believed. The mage had been kind so far, but "kind" and "trustworthy" were two very different things. As Adeline led them through the city, Enathaya felt the tension in her start to ebb. As foreign as this place felt, there was enough in common with the cities of the Free Marches that she felt her confidence bolstered. She shifted her pack so that the opening lay within her peripheral vision and glanced at Adeline to see whether she had a coin purse any place that could be easily snatched, before making eye contact with a boy a few feet away. He pouted back at her. He appeared dirty, helpless, and lost, but too obviously so. Likely, the boy had been planted to distract people so their pockets could be picked. She knew; she had filled a similar role once when her family had become extremely desperate for coin. Adeline finally indicated that the tavern lay ahead, and as they wove their way through the crowd of merchants, shoppers, and guards, the thought of whatever food might be served made Enathaya's already aching stomach rumble loudly. She forced herself to ignore it and not wrap an arm around her middle, instead raising her hand to shield her eyes against the bright sunlight. She squinted at the sign. Free Sp...Spr...Spir...well, Free Sp-something, anyway. Enathaya had never learned to read very well, though she was passable with numbers...useful in order to know that one was not being cheated at the market. Whatever the place was called, it smelled exactly like the Hanged Man, even from outside. The combined smell of sweat, cheap alcohol, and vomit flooded her with sudden homesickness, but it also blunted her hunger. A little bit. The two women stepped inside. mousestalker

Aranka BemotDwarf (Commoner/casteless, now surfacer) Female Meatshield for hire bsn.boards.net/post/303996As the two women staggered into the bar, Aranka started slightly. They were an unusual pair, one you didn't see every day. They both looked the worse for wear and neither of them showed the least amount of fashion sense. The human one looked to be in better shape than the elf, but that really wasn't saying much. One was both clutching a long stick. Battle trophy? Aranka wondered. Maybe the trees really attacked the poor dears. And possibly bushes as well.Suddenly conscious of her Orlesian (the vendor swore blind) finery, Aranka headed to the bar. "Two ales and some soup for the pair that just walked in, please." She said quietly to the human bartender. "And don't tell them who bought it for them, as well". She calculated the appropriate sum, counted out the coins, added a small tip and walked back to her seat, bangles jingling and silks rustling. This is one dwarf that runs contrary to the stereotypes she thought smugly. I'd be quite the shocker to all those idiots who say we don't have colour sense! Many had been the astonished onlooker who reeled back in awe at the first sight of her. Aranka was wearing a diaphanous confection of a blouse made of brightly coloured scarves all in varying shades of red, pink, purple and blue together with a fine Orlesian silk skirt in bright jade. Eighteen bangles, tiny bell earrings with hoops and rings on all but one of her fingers and toes accessorized the outfit. Cerulean leather combat boots completed her outfit. I'll bet the trees really did attack them! she thought suddenly. I always knew the surfacers were kidding me about how safe the forest is! Poor lambsThe Free Spirit was middling busy. The usual riff-raff were hanging about, keeping the chairs and stools anchored to the ground. Aranka was taking a short break from working. With any luck, either the stories of an anti-pirate expedition would materialize or a convoy would be hiring. She didn't need the coin yet, but it never hurt to have some more put aside. Character Name : Oudart Rodin Race : Human Gender : Male Facial / physical features : Short pepper hair, grey eyes, scars on face, withered left leg Skills : proficient with weapons, specialised in sword and shield

Oudart watched the dwarf walked back to her table. Dwarves tend not to draw attention to themselves but this one was shouting aloud to the world with her flamboyant clothing and jingling trappings. Either she knew what she was doing or she was oblivious to the enticement she was putting out. He swept the coppers into his waist pouch. What she had paid was enough for a platter but the two recent arrivals looked tired and starved, especially the elf. Soup was a good choice smilesja will be taking over for tavern keeper.

The road was damp and muddy today, the clouds overcasting the sun in the sky. Janus clutched his travelling cloak close, chilled by the weather he is not used to. Travelling to Ferelden seemed like a good idea, considering all the chaos that just occurred in the past year there is likely work to be had, nobles to meet with. Instead, Janus has been aimless for some time, whats left of his current funds would be gone soon, leaving him a penniless pauper once more. 'Damn southerners' he mused to himself. Unfortunately, his daydreaming and pre-occupation of keeping warm didn't prevent him from colliding with a man on the road, a fleeing man who seemingly lept from nowhere. The two bumped heads for a moment, knocking Janus on his feet. His back was now slick with freshly caked mud, his cloak in need of treatment. Janus slowly rose up from the ground, a bit dazed with a slight gash across his forehead- a tear of blood beginning to swell and drip. He looked to the man, and was shocked to see a templar, red-faced and muddy from his own fall. The man looked panicked, before nearly shouting, "I'm sorry, messere, i'm so sorry but you got to run! Run away! There are witches and knife-ears about!" Janus' eyes widened. "Witches you say?" he said, offering a hand to the templar. "Elven witches at that. How interesting...which way did they go?" "Why down the road, messere." said the templar, as he was helped to his feet. "None about twenty minutes ago me and my men were hunting apostates to bring to justice. Two of 'em got the better hand on us, they killed my friends but spared me." "It always is a mage that is powerful, isen't it?" Janus said, bemused by the notion. "Aye, damn filthy bastards mages are. We got pirates attacking the coast, we got mages killing folks in the hills, and were still trying to recover and keep the peace!" huffed the templar. "Thankfully we got kind folk such as yourself. I do apologize for the run-in, been in a panic since the attack. Is there any way I can make it up to you, messere?" Janus grinned, as he brought his hand to the cut across his brow. He felt the warmth of the blood splash between his fingers, and in his mind he felt it tingle with power. "Oh, I can think of something..." he said to the templar, his bloodied fingers now outstretched to him... ( Reznore )

Jean-Pierre De La Vallée Human/ Ex-Templar Sword and Shield warrior bsn.boards.net/post/306960Jean-Pierre De La Vallée wasn't having a good day. He was in Ferelden, a geographical situation that would put any Orlesian ill at ease, but made worse by the fact that he was now in front of a seedy tavern called The Free Spirit , ready to do something he might regret. Earlier that day he had met a group of templars on the road, they had talked about something he couldn't quite remember and then Jean-Pierre bid them "adieu" and went on his merry way. Half an hour later he could not remember where he was going either, and had walked back to look for the templars to ask if perchance he had mentioned his destination during their conversation. That's when he saw the fatal fight with the mages, hid and then proceeded to follow the women in town. " Blessed are they who stand before The corrupt and the wicked and do not falter. Blessed are the peacekeepers, the champions of the just. " He prayed silently before pushing the door of the tavern open. He quickly took a look around , and grew really worried when he saw the little circus with the dwarf woman and the man with the walking stick. He prayed again silently. If the man was also a mage , things might get really complicated.Maker help him. Nevertheless, Jean-Pierre steeled his resolve and walked straight to the table where the human mage and the small elf were eating. "My lady." He bowed down his head as a sign of salute to the human woman " My name is Jean-Pierre De La Vallée, I am a Holy Knight of the Templar Order and by the power the Maker has given me , I , Jean-Pierre De La Vallée, declare you and the knife-ear are under arrest and shall follow me at once." The ex-templar did not let the women the time to react before starting to speak louder so the crowd of the tavern could hear him. "Ladies and gentlemen , hear me ! I saw this woman ..." he was pointing his finger at Adeline "...kill three templars out in the wood. She did it with magic , probably to defend that knife-ear " he was now pointing his finger at Enathaya. "who also appears to be a mage. They have staves, as you can see. I propose to take them to Orlais where they can be judged and taken back to a proper circle. To do this I will have to ask of the kind people of Ferelden and ..." he turned his gaze to the colorful dwarven woman "... the dwarf dressed like the bad aftertaste of an Orlesian festival gone wrong , some donation. By this I mean : coins , please." Jean-Pierre smiled and opened his arms as a gesture he hoped would make him look like a kind benefactor . ( smilesja , it's your turn.)

(OOC: Tavern music: Adeline raised an eyebrow, when Enathaya answered she was looking for work. It's an answer sure, but Adeline can't shake the feeling that there was more to why Elathaya decided to come Amaranthine. However she been through a lot today so Adeline decided to not press on. The pair walked through the bustling marketplace, Adeline went through the crowd in order to avoid guards or witch hunters. She had heard of Witch Hunters patrolling the lands of Ferelden lately. Adeline was grateful that she hasn't met any yet, but she has read up on them. Witch Hunters were like Templars, except they were more mercenary and were far crueler than Templars. Adeline heard stories of Witch Hunters chopping off mage's hands and sending them to the Circle claiming that they were using blood magic. Their cruelty was also the reason that they were not popular amongst the Chantry to the point where Templars actually attack Witch Hunters sometimes. Still with the mages free, people out of fear turn to Witch Hunters to do their bidding. After about 15 minutes of walking, the pair reached the Tavern: The Free Spirit. They haven't opened the door, but Adeline could already smell the stale piss and vomit which inhabited every Tavern she's been in. She recoiled a bit, repulsed by the stench but entered. The Tavern was very active today, people getting drunk or chatting with their friends having a good time. Adeline scanned the area for any Templars or Witch Hunters, there doesn't seem to be any. She then turned her attention to Enathaya who looked like she was starving. Adeline then reached out and took out her coin pouch. It was the last of her coin, and Adeline was going to use it to feed herself. But the Elf clearly needed the money more than she did. "Here Enathaya." Adeline smiled handing her the pouch. "Go buy yourself some food, you've been through a lot today and you looked starved." Adeline found an empty table and motioned Enathaya to follow her. As soon as the two women sat down, a barmaid came over. "Two ales and some soup on the house!" Adeline was taken aback a bit. "From who?" She asked. "Someone who cares!" The smiling Barmaid "Well tell him or her. That you have our thanks." Adeline smiled "But my friend, may want more food. Enathaya, why don't you buy more." After Enathaya's response, the barmaid left and Adeline, stared at Enathaya. "You still think you owe me huh?" Adeline asked. "Well if you want to repay me then, you'll travel with me. Not with this job, but in our travels, it's obvious you need training with your magic. Did any one teach you?" After hearing the Elf's answer Adeline continued while sipping on her soup. "In any case, you need to be trained. An untrained mage is very dangerous in the world. Please travel with me and I'll teach everything I know about magic, and I'll protect your from demons or Templars. That is how you can repay me." After hearing Enathaya's response. Adeline and Enathaya continued to eat their meal (or meals if Enathaya chooses to order.) The food was pretty good all things considered. Adeline enjoyed listening to the music and watching an unusual Dwarf. "Enjoying yourself? Enathaya?" Adeline asked. After her answer, their conversation was interrupted by an old man. He looked gaunt and confused, but had that look that Adeline recognized. A Templar! Before she could do anything the man spoke: "My lady." He bowed down his head as a sign of salute to the human woman " My name is Jean-Pierre De La Vallée, I am a Holy Knight of the Templar Order and by the power the Maker has given me , I , Jean-Pierre De La Vallée, declare you and the knife-ear are under arrest and shall follow me at once." Adeline reached for Enathaya's hand: "Let's get out of here now!" She whispered, heart beating furiously. Jean-Pierre on the other hand, had different ideas he turned around and spoke loudly: "Ladies and gentlemen , hear me ! To do this I will have to ask of the kind people of Ferelden and ..." "Get out of here you drunk!" One of the patrons yelled and the crowd seemed to agree. Jean-Pierre seemed distracted however uttering out "coins , please." and stretched out his arms. Taking an opportunity, Adeline signaled Enathaya stay in her seat while she came closer to Jean-Pierre. Armed with a sleep spell. "You look tired poor man." Adeline said subtly waving her hand at the man's face and he collapsed within seconds. Adeline sighed and looked at the crowd. They looked pleased. "Well the drink got to him." One of them said as the festivities continued, shaking her head Adeline turned to Enathaya. "Are you okay?" She asked worried about the Elf. "Don't worry he's sleeping, sleep spell as I said I will protect you from Templars or any kind of harm. You don't have to be alone. Come on let's look at the message boards." dragontartare

EnathayaCity Elf Apostate Mage bsn.boards.net/post/302581/threadEnathaya slipped her knives slowly back into their hiding places, but did not let her barrier dissipate. The Orlesian was snoring gently, his clothing already looking dusty from his fall to the filthy floor. "I am not worried, Messere," she told Adeline, "at least, no more worried than the last time I was threatened by a man so drunk he saw double." Staves, the man had said. She did not carry a staff. The only staff in sight was Adeline's.** "I have never had much trouble defending myself from lone drunks." She reached back to stack the empty soup bowl and mug, and handed them to a passing barmaid before getting up to follow Adeline. She wondered who had provided the meal and glanced around the room, but no one seemed to be watching them very closely. She shrugged mentally as Adeline led her back outside. "I still do not understand why you want to train me, or why you will not just tell me what you want in return. Will I be your servant?" She carefully strengthened her barrier as they passed through a rowdy crowd of people. Carefully, because the last time she had tried to strengthen an existing barrier, she had ended up shattering it instead. "I would feel no dishonor in being a servant until I repay my debt. I could even help you protect yourself, if you wanted me to." She lowered her voice and leaned in, "not with magic, of course, but I have lived in cities my whole life, and I have learned how to deal with thieves and common thugs. And with their scams." She said nothing aloud about how often she had been the one pulling the scams. mousestalker **OC: I can change this line if the "staves" part is also changed. Ena does not have a staff and has never had the opportunity to get one.

Aranka BemotDwarf (Commoner/casteless, now surfacer) Female Meatshield for hire bsn.boards.net/post/303996Aranka looked in amazement as the style impaired Orlesian slumped and began to snore. He clearly has been out of touch with the latest fashions! she thought to herself. Madame Liselle assured me herself that I am in the forefront. The poor dear must have been in the wilderness for a very long time. Besides, everyone knows excessive fresh air addles the noodle.Aranka returned to nursing her beer, barely noticing when the traveling pair departed. At some point, someone here would say something that might lead to work. Aranka didn't want to miss any opportunities. She had been on vacation for eighteen hours and the idleness was getting to her. linksocarina

The city of Amartanthine was charming, in a quaint sort of way. The moss-backed gray cobblestones dotted the sides of the castle buildings while a churned dirt road strolled through the square. Sun-bleached banners fly high, a once clear bear now faded into the fabric, marking the cities arling as their territory. Janus was slightly impressed by the sight. Merchants of all kinds hawking wares, peasant farmers in shabby clothes stopping to chat or smoke- taverns bustling with activity, pilgrims flocking to the temples of Maferath;Janus felt his lips curl a bit. 'Even southerners can have a sense of civility.' he mused to himself. Janus was in no shape to complain still, his cloak still fresh with mud splashed along his backside, his forehead protruding a fresh wound. At least his pocketbook was bigger; the faint clinking of fresh silver being the only ringing to his step. Funny what templars carry these days. The cold still was bothersome, but at least he now had a direction, that templar was good at mentioning opportunities in Amaranthine at least, and now all Janus needs do is to seize it for himself. In the square, he noticed something in particular- two women, one an elf, crowding together near a Chantry Board. Janus sized them up; the woman was clearly an apostate of some kind, her staff a give-away to her abilities. Perhaps it's heartwood or ash, he couldn't tell. Considering the chaos that reigned in the south barely a year ago, perhaps the new Divines mandates regarding mages have eased suspicions of them down here. The elven woman, however, seemed more inconspicuous. Short in stature but an air of caution around her, like a cat ready to pounce. Perhaps these are the women the templar spoke of. Janus casually walked closer to the pair. Making his presence known as to not startle them, he feigned glancing at the chantry board, before a full stop, as if to read it's contents. "What do we have here?" He mumbled to himself, as be began to read the board. ( Reznore )

Jean-Pierre De La ValléeHuman/Ex-templar Sword and Shield warriorbsn.boards.net/post/306960Feet. Pretty, pretty feet were the first thought Jean-Pierre had when he woke up.And then he noticed he was on the ground , surrounded by Fereldan giving him the evil eyes. His right hip was now slightly aching, and getting up proved to be a rather humiliating exercise. One of the tavern patrons threw a piece of hard bread at Jean-Pierre's head , muttering "Stupid templar !" and that's when he remembered what he did, but not why he did it. He let a long and tired breathe out , he was no longer a templar and for reasons he could not grasp templars were no longer trusted by the public either. As if the day could not be getting any worse, his stomach started to growl loudly, his hand reached automatically for the small and far too light for his liking leather purse hanging at his belt. The ex-templar scanned the tavern , first for those damned mabari those fereldan fools were so fond of , and second for a friendly face.None were to be found. Except...except for the dwarf woman. She had a vague Orlesian je-ne-sais-quoi, and was therefore the less threatening and more familliar presence in the place. Also short. Putting a firm hand on his purse, and picturing the thousand ways he could knock down the dwarf should problems arise , Jean-Pierre De La Vallée made his way toward the red-haired lady. "Dwa...Madame" he bowed his head in courtesy. "Let me introduce myself, I am Jean-Pierre De La Vallée."He was trying to smile and to look as warm as possible and was achieving a magnificent I-just-hit-my-toe grimace "Let me say you look..." he looked at the woman up and down "...hum lovely Very arlequin.Very orlesian. I will be honest, I'm in a bit of a predicament and as my mother used to say ," Jean-Pierre" she'd say and I would say " Yes, mother" and she would say " Jean-Pierre, you know what dwarves are like ...and I would say " no, mother I do not know" and she would say " Jean-Pierre , dwarves are like brick-shaped magpie. They're small fatties who like the shiny." What I'm trying to say is... I think I made a huge mistake, my lady." Tears were starting to shine at the corner of his eyes and he leaped closer to the dwarven woman. " I need some coins, I want to go home. Help me." (I think it's smilesja 's turn)

Wanting to separate her and Enathaya from the Templar and the rowdy crowd, Adeline began to head towards the message board that is usually located outside the pubs. During the short walk Enathaya still looked confused, the Elf doesn't seem to understand Adeline's offer to train her: "I still do not understand why you want to train me." Enathaya said. "Or why you will not just tell me what you want in return. Will I be your servant?" Smiling at that silly statement of being a "servant" Adeline was about to respond but Enathaya continued speaking: "I would feel no dishonor in being a servant until I repay my debt. I could even help you protect yourself, if you wanted me to." She lowered her voice and leaned in, "not with magic, of course, but I have lived in cities my whole life, and I have learned how to deal with thieves and common thugs. And with their scams." Adeline smiled faded a little. It's a shame that City Elves are treated like second class citizens to the point where they resigned themselves as servants. She has definitely has seen the abuses that Elven servants have endured, especially when they owe debts. Adeline did appreciate Enathaya's kind offer of protection from thugs and pickpockets in the cities. She has experience, but nowhere near the amount that Enathaya has she presumes. Adeline stopped walking and turned towards Enathaya, putting her hand on the Elf's shoulder. "Enathaya" Adeline said gently. "I don't want a servant, I want a friend and..... an apprentice." Adeline never had an apprentice she always wanted to train one back when she was in the Circle. "The reason why I want to train you." Adeline continued "Is because I sense great potential within you. The kind of potential that can help the innocent and the poor. The kind of potential that could help the world be a better place. You are rough around the edges I mean you can barely maintain your barrier." Adeline pointed at the Elf carefully maintaining her spell. "I ask in return" Adeline continued "That you travel with me even after this job. I want to help a fellow mage find their way in the world. I do see greatness within you, I do. But I also sense great fear in you." Adeline expression became much more serious. "I think you and I both know that you are not here for work, but rather that you want answers for your abilities. I can help Enathaya if you just let me." Adeline turned around and headed for the message board. "And I do think we can benefit from each other, afterall I may need some help navigating through the cities!" Adeline chuckled a bit at the statement, but she did mean it cities can be very dangerous places especially for mages and Elves. Arriving at the message board Adeline began looking for the Pirate job. After about a minute of searching Adeline finally found the poster. "Enathaya." Adeline said removing the poster "I found it." Lowering the poster so Enathaya can read it, Adeline scanned the offer: Wanted: Pirate by the name of Julius for theft, murder and harassment of merchant ships. Reward: 2,000 coin for more information see bartender: Oudat Rodin at the Free SpiritAdeline smiled at the Elf, "We can split the reward among us let's get back to the pub my friend!" Just then a mysterious man appeared behind them, reading the message board. From the corner of her eye Adeline could see the man sported black hair and a black beard wearing a mud soaked cloak and had a wound on his forehead. Adeline felt the veil shift a little in his presence there was something definitely off about man. "What do we have here?" He mused speaking loudly enough so that only Adeline and Enathaya could hear. Adeline looked at him with suspicion, she shouldn't make rash judgements but there was something off about him. Adeline walked towards the man, clutching Dreamcatcher just in case. "Hello ser." Adeline said bluntly. "What brings you to the messageboards?" (OOC: dragontartare )

EnathayaCity Elf Apostate Mage bsn.boards.net/post/302581/threadEnathaya had given up trying to read the notice after the first line, but kept her eyes pointed at the parchment until Adeline appeared to be finished reading, too. The mage looked almost giddy, with all the smiling she did. "Let's go back to the pub, my friend!" she exclaimed. As Ena turned around to head back, a large -- large compared to her, at least -- man strode up behind them, seemingly reading the notice board. Ena felt a prickling up her whole body that she knew had nothing to do with the man's size. Enathaya was always alert while walking crowded streets, always aware of the shifting of people around her, aware of who was at her back...so how had this man snuck up behind them so effectively? She took a quick step back, not just due to fear, but to give herself room to maneuver should she need to defend herself and her new...whatever Adeline was. Mistress in some fashion, she supposed, no matter what the mage wanted to call them. Adeline whipped around a split second later, and Ena noticed her entire countenance change. It was more than being startled. Something was off. The mage was worried. And if the mage was worried, then Enathaya was terrified. mousestalker

Ashara, the Clanless Ex WardenHeadshot: [Writing Timed before Adelide and Enathaya go to the Chantry Board.]
It was midday as Ashara strode through the outskirts of Amaranthine. The humans living in this portion of the city were poor, and most either stared at her like an animal at one of the traveling shows...or in outright fear at what the markings of Andruil indicated. She was of Dalish Origin, and she had no interest in hiding that or her ears. They would live with their discomfort, she had no cares for their reaction. She openly carried her weapons as well, the dagger on her hip strapped tightly, but obvious, and the crossbow with it's handle sticking upwards over her left shoulder for a quick draw. Her long bow, carefully wrapped and oiled in it's carrying sack, was slung across her right shoulder. Three weapons, and her hands entirely free. Her armor was even more alien to near all, fitted close to the body, elegant in it's curves and efficiency. It had rich warm colors of the metal, or wood as one could not tell which, gleaming even in the light of the overcast day. If her tattoo, weapons, and armor weren't enough to give you pause, the glint in her eye and countenance just might. She didn't look like a murderous thug- she just looked like she could kill you before you realized you were dead.
As she reached the gates, the clatter of hooves on the cobbles became louder and louder until any onlooker would have guessed she would have been trampled to death. The nobleman baring down the path certainly didn't care about possibly hitting her. Except that she stepped so swiftly to the left that Ashara missed the hooves by moments, even as the horse itself seemed to take issue with the near collision and slow itself down near so quickly as to toss off it's rider.
Ashara tilted her head as she gazed into the horse's fore face, it's eyes wild, from ten feet away. Ashara's ears twitched slightly, the only recognition of hearing the nobleman's curses at her for getting in the way. The horse grew more calm, it's breathing slowing down as it caught it's breath, it's head turned to the side with one eye focused on Ashara. A small smile began to tease at the corner of Ashara's mouth and the horse snorted, shaking it's head and tossing it's hair. The nobleman had stopped yelling full force, perturbed by the lack of the reaction from the odd knife ear before him, oblivious to any perceived danger as not possible in his world. He began to ask for the soldiers at the gate, who'd just been enjoying the show, to deal with her. Before any of the soldiers could react, Ashara calmly turned away and headed further into the city at no great speed. The bay horse, so calm moments before, suddenly reared itself full force, throwing the noisy nobleman to the ground flat to his back, the wind quite knocked out of him. The horse cantered away towards the outskirts of Amaranthine, free of it's annoying rider.
Ahshara's small smile turned into a mischievous, and slightly vicious, grin.
Making a right, she stepped up the stone stairs that would lead to the Chantry's doors. Chantry sisters travelling down it keeping their eyes averted and Ashara paid them no attention. And finally, she was before the Chantry Board. There wasn't much that crossed the line from tame to dangerous- except one.
Wanted: Pirate by the name of Julius for theft, murder and harassment of merchant ships. Reward: 2,000 coin for more information see bartender: Oudat Rodin at the Free Spirit
Tucking the information away, she left as quietly as she had come. A large tavern, the Crown and Lion, was right there, and she pushed in the wooden door. It was midday, so there were not very many people there yet. The jobless who still managed to have coin for drink (some people called them Nobles) and merchants stopping by for their midday meal. Stepping up to the Tavern Keeper, who eyed her up in down in cautious curiosity, she sat down as a sign that she intended to be a customer.
"What'll it be, traveler?" He asked, placing his hands flat on the bar.
"Do you have any rice, perhaps with some cabbage? I'm willing to pay extra to have the cabbage made fresh." Ashara paused. "And what kind of fresh fruit might you have?"
"Indeed, we can handle that. Extra coin always makes things easier. And Fruit? well, we have some apples and pears, very ripe, meant for some pies. Sure you wouldn't want--"
"The fruit alone will be fine. I'll have an apple while I wait for the rice and cabbage."
The Inn Keeper shrugged, walking further back into the kitchen to give instructions to the cook. he came back with an apple and sat it on the bar. Ashara turned her back to him to look into the fire across the room, biting into the apple with relish.
She began to speak quietly and evenly.
"O Falon'Din Another bite from the apple, quite large, chewing thoroughly and moments passed. Lethanavir--Friend to the Dead Another bite from the apple, half done. Guide my feet, calm my soul, She took a couple more bites, nearing the core at this point. She walked across the room, around the tables and chairs, to stand next to the fire. Let it warm her. Lead me to my rest." Tossing the core into the fire, a log collapsed in the fire place sending up sparks, lighting up her amber eyes brightly within her serious face.
It was time to hunt.

Aranka BemotDwarf (Commoner/casteless, now surfacer) Female Meatshield for hire bsn.boards.net/post/303996Meanwhile at the Free Spirit, Aranka heard someone refer to the chanter's board as a good source for casual work. It was early still, so not much would be happening here anyway. There was no way in Dust town she was going to help arrest anyone for free, in any event. Nor was she interested in subsidizing strange men's lyrium habits. It was a filthy vice and weepy men simply hardened her heart. She slipped out and headed for the Chantry. She quickly divined which was the board by the presence of the two travelers and another human. He too, may have won a battle against the trees. She walked up just in time to hear the human female ask "Hello ser, what brings you to the messageboards?" A job, duh! Aranka thought silently, but she waited to hear what the dark haired man would say. Perhaps he was another templar, come to arrest wanderers with sticks? linksocarina

"Hello ser." the mage said bluntly. "What brings you to the messageboards?" "Oh, just reading the boards. Looking for work such as yourself." Janus replied. He could tell the two were uncomfortable, the mage cautiously caressing her staff while the elven girl tenses slightly. "It seems a big job there, this pirate business. Also the type of job with a substantial reward. Perhaps you were looking at it as well?" Janus asked the mage, raising his eyebrow expectantly. He noted the two were staring at his forehead. He smiled at her before exclaiming "Oh! I must look horrible at the moment." he said, pointing to the fresh cut across his brow. "Some fool on the road, templar I believe, rammed into me at full speed, causing that injury. Ran right into me, didn't look back either as he ran off." The two women were still cautious. "I apologize, where are my manners. Janus Quintus Hassilderous, formerly of house Hassilderous, Laetan of Tevinter. A pleasure to meet you madame..." he said, extending his arm for a handshake. No reason to be coy with these folk, they are looking for an excuse to attack, it seems. Maybe he can put their minds at ease by being honest with them. Strength in numbers, especially with mages, is usually a good way to travel. He also noticed the crowd grow larger. A Dwarven woman in fine regalia has now stopped near the board, listening in on the conversation. ( Reznore )

Jean-Pierre De La ValléeHuman/Ex-templar Sword and Shield warriorbsn.boards.net/post/306960The colorful dwarven woman royally ignored his plea and walked out the tavern leaving Jean-Pierre again standing awkwardly in the middle of the tavern. A man, Ferelden judging by his furs, was looking at him and chuckling. A friendly face, the ex-templar thought "Those dwarves" Jean-Pierre spat before rolling his eyes "My mother used to say " Jean-Pierre" she'd..." before he could finish the man turned from him , face distorted in disgust. "Excuse me" Jean-Pierre was now tapping his new best friend on the shoulder "I was talking. I know you Ferelden were never taught proper manners, but..." and then The Ferelden got up, and Jean-Pierre had to look up, and then the ferelden whistled and mabari appeared from under the table and Jean-Pierre eyes went down. "You were saying ?" asked the man. "My good man , I meant no harm ." Jean Pierre lifted his two hands as a sign of peace. "It's obviously not your fault you were never taught proper civility" the mabari started to growl and Jean-Pierre understood he was getting closer to a tragic social faux-pas. Who would have thought those fereldan were so thin-skinned? " Those who bring harm without provocation to the least of His children are hated and accursed by the Maker." he reminded the Ferelden dog-owner. As he was leaving the tavern , Jean-Pierre ears were still ringing with the screams of the Fereldan. But at least he now knew there was a board outside with job offers. This day was finally getting better... ( phoray I think)

Adeline narrowed her eyes on the man, focusing on his wound. It looked recent, but the man didn't seem to care. "Oh, just reading the boards. Looking for work such as yourself." the man replied. Adeline once again felt the veil shift It likely had something to do with this man. The staff he was carrying looked fancy but was generic enough to pass as a regular traveling walking stick. He was a mage but was he blood mage, usually when the veil shifts it's due to the weakened veil caused by death or the man was using blood magic. Adeline still stared at the man's wound, was he using blood magic, she's not sure but being next to the man made her the hairs in the back of her neck stand up and the fact the veil is shifting around his presence. "It seems a big job there, this pirate business. Also the type of job with a substantial reward. Perhaps you were looking at it as well?" the man asked. "My friend and I are interested yes." Adeline answered "It seems that the job pays and at most requires 2 people." Still fixated on the man's wound Adeline decided it's time to ask this man some questions. "Ser, your forehead is bleeding. May I clean it." The man smiled an awkward smile that made Adeline cringe a bit. "Oh! I must look horrible at the moment." he said, pointing to the fresh cut across his brow. "Some fool on the road, templar I believe, rammed into me at full speed, causing that injury. Ran right into me, didn't look back either as he ran off." Adeline's heart stopped she stared at Enathaya with fear in her eyes. "A templar?" She thought "The Templar that I spared when I rescued Enathaya?" Slowly turning back to the mysterious man Adeline looked at him with intensity. What he was he going to say next, would confirm her suspicion. "I apologize, where are my manners. Janus Quintus Hassilderous, formerly of house Hassilderous, Laetan of Tevinter. A pleasure to meet you madame..." Adeline appeared shocked. What was a Tevinter mage doing in a place like Amaranthine? What was his intention. Turning to Enathaya Adelne whispered: "Get behind me now!" Gripping Dreamcatcher he turned to Janus with his hand out in extension. Adeline was confused for a bit but reluctantly shook his hand. The last thing that she wants is conflict right now with all these people. "My name is Adeline" She replied with spite in her voice while letting go of his hand she felt scars on his palm clearly a practiced blood mage, "my friend can introduce herself if she wants to, but don't you dare even stare at her." Adeline warned. The mage had questions for Janus, questions that she hoped he would be truthful for his sake. "What's a Tevinter mage doing here? I hope not to cause harm to the people or to corrupt my friend over here." Adeline said "If you do, then you and me will have big problem." (OOC: dragontartare )

EnathayaCity Elf Apostate Mage bsn.boards.net/post/302581/threadEnathaya ignored Adeline's order to get behind her, instead shifting her weight to more easily flank the man, should defending themselves become necessary. She surreptitiously slid one of her knives from its hiding place and readied a haste spell in her other hand. She had rarely had to fight other mages, but from that limited experience, she knew her best chance was to be faster than they were, since she could not possibly hope to be more powerful. She gritted her teeth at how tenuous her hold on the spell was, but it was better than nothing. A quick stab somewhere distracting on the man's body could help them get away. Still, as uneasy as Adeline clearly was, the Tevinter had made no move to harm them, yet. She thought he was unlikely to try now, as the group was starting to attract a crowd. Her eyes darted quickly from person to person, searching for potential allies -- guards, do-gooders, busybodies -- though the only individuals that stood out were a dwarf dressed in bright clothing and a very drunk old woman yelling profanities at passersby. He held his hand out for Adeline to shake, seemingly ignoring Enathaya completely -- which was how she preferred it -- until Adeline called his attention to her. "My name is Enathaya," she told him. She did not hold out her hand. "I know what is done to elves in Tevinter. You will not find me so easily corrupted or kidnapped, if that is your aim." She was pleased with how strong her voice sounded, and the words were as much for Adeline's benefit as for his. "I have no fight with you, otherwise." She suspected that Adeline felt some moral quandary over the idea of even meeting a supposed blood mage, but Enathaya had far more serious concerns at the moment, and she hoped Adeline would not pick a fight with him. Let the man move on and forget them. mousestalker
