I tend to do all side/dlc first.....it kinda fleshes out the overall storyline and then you can take a deep breath before taking on the main mission....for me it feels a bit anti-climatic to do the main story, then come back around for side runs and dlc.

I was just curious on whether or not people planned to play missions after the main story critical path, and their reasoning why. Personally for me any side missions and any future dlc stories that show up will be played before playing the last mission. I like having definite endings to the story, and I feel most dlc and side missions don't bring a satisfying end to the story. An example would be Mass Effect 2. While the Arrival DLC was more meant to be played after the Suicide Mission I still played it before the Suicide Mission. Arrival as an ending for all of Mass Effect 2 felt underwhelming to me. The Suicide Mission just hit all right notes. It either leaves me satisfied to stop playing or wanting to immediately jump into Mass Effect 3, but never with the feeling of wanting to play more of Mass Effect 2 afterwords. How do you plan to handle side missions and any future DLC missions? Why? I agree with you on the Suicide Mission, it really set the tone for ME3. After beating it tho I stepped away from the game and revisited it after Arrival dropped. I found that Arrival was a great little appetizer to ME3. So I guess I will do what I usually do; as many side quests as I can before the main story and do the DLC as it drops. I'm hoping Andromeda has me wanting to do as many playthroughs as the first 3 did.

As a side note....does anyone remember that giant mechanical serpernt thing in one of trailers like, a year or two ago? I really hope that is something you get to fight.
Part of me hopes it'd be something like the High Dragon fights in the DA series, high level optional bosses or something. That would make for some cool side content if giant enemies are in this and done well.

Depends on what happens after the Path.
If I could have done Sidemissions after the Battle of The Citadel, I'd have done so. I saved the smaller missions, Arrival, LOTSB, Overlord and small hub quests for after the Suicide Mission. Anything after Sanctuary feels weird to do so I go straight to Cereberus when it's done and finally Priority: Earth.

I need to have absolutely nothing else to do before I advance the main story.

I tend to weave my side missions in between main story stuff depending onwhat I feel like doing and what not. The DLC is pretty much the same but usually I do it after the main story is over, if that is an option.

Side missions before the final main quest, DLC missions after the final main quest (unless they must be completed beforehand).

I do everything optional before main story missions. I only do main story missions if I ran out of optional content.

Some DLC just makes more sense to play before the end of the main storyline and some make more sense after. For instance, the Descent DLC, to me, felt urgent enough to do before the "Final Battle." Oh yeah. Hakkon made no sense to just begin during Cory's stuff imo. It was a whole new story with a new baddie. Hmmm not quite for me. I mean, I consider it more of a post-ending DLC for sure. But after Arbor Wilds, his forces are wrecked and you're just waiting for something to happen. You only have to time the Morrigan content. So checking out the Basin isn't the biggest deal to me, except for how long the content is compared to a typical zone, and how little it has to do with the main plot. But as an excursion, its fine timed then.

Side missions before main quest but I like DLCs to take place AFTER the main questline so we are introduced to the immediate consequences for our actions and prepare the setting for the next game.

I like to do all the side quests before the final battle. Most DLC is the same way but there are few exceptions like ME2: The Arrival that I prefer to do after the final battle, and of course some you can only do after the final battle because that is how they were made.

I probably try to get them all done before the main story. But since I can do them after, it might be nice to look forward to after the story is over.

Journals must be almost completely empty before progressing the critical path. Gamers know this

Before. I rarely play the games after the ending, even Skyrim. Just feels wrong.
