We've heard about it for years.
Here's what happened to your daddy, Alec Ryder.

Yeah that's seems to be a very major mumbling ! But shouldn't have SAM recorded it ? SAM is definitely intriguing. When ryder is out we have a serie of flashback, i slowed the video to get as much as possible.
All those memories are about his/her mother. We mostly see happier times when they were children and one with someone crying over her body in a hospital. But one is way weirder. We can see the entire family in one memory...the entire family...so whose memory is this ? I'm starting to think it is S.A.M. memory, that S.A.M. took years to be concieved and that ellen died before it was finished. Maybe her way of thinking, her memories were transfered to S.A.M. after all it is supposed to learn from experience and Alec Ryder hid a lot of thing about its "true potential".

I know this is gonna sound super paranoid, but until I see his body, I don't think he's dead.

I mean, to what end would they fake his death? And if they didn't find the body, why would they assume he's dead?

They saw his body and took it back to the ship. But the body disappears. Someone has stolen it. Everyone's like, "Why?" It's because...the Kett took it! For experiments! And they'll bring him back a la Project Lazarus!

That justification is so horrible it may actually be true. Considering Archon's face when he found out what happened, I don't doubt it.

Well, the video is already here so... The "pretty good isn't good enough" set him up as an ass, but the shuttle pep talk and this scene quickly redeemed him. *snip* Daddy loved us! I'll have my revenge! I'll terraform the shirt out of this planet!

What is that energy wave that knocks down both ryders? It seems something kinda forced if there's no explanation. Did someone activate the beacon again? Because in the later part we see the lightning going on again.

Seeing this in the playthrough I watched made me cry. Forums had hyped me up a little that he wouldn't die but alas, false hope. Kinda sad I spoiled it for myself though, welp.

I know this is gonna sound super paranoid, but until I see his body, I don't think he's dead. I agree, because I don't think S.A.M. is simply a computer (we know it isn't, it's a simulated neural network (!) - meaning a real brain, but much more advanced than a human's brain and faster thinking) and I don't think Alec only transfered the Pathfinder status to his son (or daughter), wouldn't be surprised if he transfered himself along with it (that's why Ryder's brain nearly overloads, the physical connection to S.A.M. is needed to get Alec out of Ryder (!)), I mean Alec is probably the only person who knows the full potential of the AI (!) - he and his wife (along with other people we don't know about) developed the thing after all! That would also be something S.A.M. would want to talk to us about, the AI after all wants to talk to us in private later on (when you receive your ship S.A.M. requests that you drop by his central core so you can talk in private!) greetings LAX ps: I think Alec's wife is inside S.A.M., too (!) that's why we see memories of her (Alec's wish to join her manifests them IMHO)

How the hell did he die!! Did the 3-4 minute eta turn into 45 minutes as the restof the team went to grab a pizza?
He is a N7 how long do you think he can hold his breath? The only thing they say is there is not enough oxygen in the air. Not if you take off your helmet you die right away.
Heck you have enough time earlier to fix your helmet. I dont mind him dying to save my Ryder but this was just so... meh. Hey did you get a couple breaths? Ok hold your breath and pass it back over here will ya? No? What a horrible daughter you are!
Now given they both do seem to be wounded in other ways. And maybe SAM is telling him, he is dying, but none of that is shown . He looks wobbly but fine. She looks to be having trouble breathing and that is it.
Just annoys me. And no he isnt dead. And why the heck dont I ask to see him! I need to yell at him for sticking a robot in me!

There's no way we don't see Alec again later in the game. Bioware designed the character creator so it directly affects Alec. This is also probably a big reason why the character creator is so limited. They wouldn't sacrifice some levels of freedom in the Character Creator just to kill off Alec at the very beginning.

Interesting tid bit...had they been using Alliance helmets, INSTEAD of Andromeda Initiative ones, both might have lived. Whoops... Alec seems like a military dad. Been in the service for a long time, his wife proably raised the kids...he might not even know how to operate outside the military...but his last act shows that he DOES love his children. Though I agree, he may have died...or 'died', but his story is NOT over. I'm interested in this mystery that pertains to Ellen and Alec Ryder. Hope its big.

Contrived death. Utterly stupid. Agreed (kind of) - I mean I like that we get a hero (male or female) that's a near blank slate, Ryder's youth makes him/her ideal for starting in an RPG IMHO, especially since the background isn't all that well defined (sure they could have done better (but that's something you can always say!)...I don't like the male's goofyness much and you can't escape that totally it seems, even if you use serious responses (there's the other thing I don't like so far: That they have the symbols, like in Dragon Age, that show you what kind of answer you are giving and of course I still don't like that the dialogue system paraphrases what the character is going to say, I'd like that verbatim so that I can really decide if I do want to say that!))) Sure it's the writers fault, but then again: Those helmets with that much glass in them? Damned, that's a weakness waiting to be exploited, a single shot to that wind screen will probably kill you if your barriers are down, while you'd have to shoot say an N7-Helmet directly into the eye-slit (otherwise there's a high chance that a single shot will not kill you), which is way harder than just hitting the face-area! greetings LAX

Though I agree, he may have died...or 'died', but his story is NOT over. I'm interested in this mystery that pertains to Ellen and Alec Ryder. Hope its big. Indeed, I thought I was the only one thinking that...so much exposed glass is crappy on a space suit (I know that our modern day space suits have that, but then again: We don't have space-pirates (and other criminals), mercenaries and explosions and local wild-life to content with in space, yet! If we did then I'd say NASA would quickly abondon those bulky suits they are currently using (or make them into a suit of powered combat armor!))...the regular Alliance armor makes more sense (same for N7 suits etc.) Yeah, I do hope so, too (I speculate that S.A.M. is modelled on Ellen Ryder's neural pathways (it would be the ultimate act of devotion to give his wife kind of a second life), like the AIs in Halo are, who are either based on dead people's neural pathways or on flash clones (clones that mature very very fast but don't live long - but then again: If all you need is a developed brain for the neural pathways, what do you care if the clone lives? (especially since you can't model an AI after a living genius without that, you can't kill the genius just for his or her neural pathways!)) So yeah, I hope this is important (I love how they explain Ryder's profiles (ok: It doesn't explain biotics if you were never a biotic before, but for all other things it kind of works! Hell, you could be an undiscovered or weak biotic and S.A.M. compensates so that your abilities become useful (!), kind of like a very very very advanced version of those biotic amps with the onboard VI (!)) greetings LAX
