But Asari aren't only limited to the culture they were born into.

Asari are monogendered. Meaning they're not women by biological definition, but rather by personal preference. So it absolutely makes sense and it's great Bioware finally dwelves deeper into their own lore.

Asari have gender preference, not a more fixed gender orientation. And most may still feel comfortable or tolerant of female gender identification. All Bioware has done here is include allowance of bending. 'Trans' even, but in some of the most minor ways (like ex. an asari living largely around humans and maybe taking on some of those understandings more, compared to a spacer asari that just has preference, compared to a Thessian asari that doesn't think about this at all; perhaps). They're not transsexuals because asari are not monosexual and they're at least typically not going to be transgendered because asari culture is monogendered. Codex is only acknowledging how interaction with other species affects a species' understanding of themselves and how they relate to others.

If you're one who insists that gender is not at all a social construct, then I guess you might be triggered.


EDIT: Some are saying 'asari are all female'. Technically, in this crazy Mass Effect setting, they're not. They are a different species by their own rules easily, they do not procreate as females do by our understandings, and they do not even have the vocabulary to be 'female', but 'asari'. The codex calls them female, and the codex is the human knowledge base, but the codex can and has been wrong or biased.
They are practically all-female, yes. They have all the qualities that few human males will have an issue with mating with them beyond their mating practices and the fact that they're aliens (unless the human males are not heterosexual, in which case they'd at least have to be aroused by enough other non-female seeming aspects at least, if anything). They have roles that are translated to sound female, Matriarch, Huntress, etc. They at large, strongly present or are capable of presenting femininity. 'Blue space babes' indeed. But in the lore, they're not female except by way of communication with humans and other gendered sapients. So while we can expect them to be mostly 'female' in most ways most of the time, we should not expect it in by default in all ways all of the time. They're still aliens, even as they're cliche scifi tropy aliens.

That said 'all-female' is exactly what most humans will call them and that's what works for their understanding, but this is more out of ignorance and I'm sure the Matriarchs have a laugh about it over meals.
